This kid is right on the money! the catcher never moved his mitt. whoever edited the footage knows exactly what the scouts want to see. The catcher never moved his glove he hit all his corners and the movement on the ball is outstanding not to mention his velocity. How tall is this kid?
i would switch peaz and pedroza. paez is a bulldog with great stuff and has a future. pedroza is also a great pitcher but can his stuff really get him far? and dont put down leyland and his scholarship. he is playing pac-10 baseball, one of the top conferences in the nation and all the west coast people and people all over the nation want to play in the conference so dont put him down. and when a person says they are getting a full scholarship for baseball, most likely they are lying because colleges cant afford to give out a lot of scholarships
damn you guys talk a lot of sh!t
Is Diamond Bar part of the SGV?
I will give my point of view of those that I have seen personally.
Pedroza- Obviously I think he is the best because I got to see him firsthand every game. Although he may not throw as hard as the others he has filthy stuff and he will lead us to another CIF run. He is only going to continue to get better.
Paez- This was a pleasant surprie for Amat. I saw him pitch in the championship and he was ligths out. I hope we get to face him in the championship of the Glendora Tourney or in CIF.
Zuniga- I have seen this kid pitch since he was 10 playing with Urbina and many of the Northview players. I would take him on our staff in a heartbeat. He is a competitor who usually wins.
Calderaro- This kid is up and down. One game he looks unhittable and other days he looks awful. He pitches to much during the off season.
Ponzo- I thought he was better his Sophomore year. His curveball is one of the best in California. If he returns to form he could eventually be the best.
Plowman- He is ok. I don't think he belongs on this list. He has more potential as a hitter than a pitcher. Go ahead kid and prove me wrong.
Klena- I got to see this kid pitch at Dodger Stadium and was very impressed with his composure. He may not have the best of stuff but he does pump strikes.
Plutko- I saw this kid pitch early in the year against Amat and although he lost I thought he was lights out. He hasn't progressed as much as he should have.
Amrhein- Another great left handed pitcher in this year's Junior class. This kid contiues to get better and better each time I see him. UCLA got a great kid in Nick.
Saucedo- Another one that doesn't belong on this list. I saw him get hammered by El Rancho last season. He plays for a bad coach in Adame.
It's nice to read positive comments about these athletes! I have personally seen several of these boys pitch, a little bias to our Diamond Bar boys...Urban & Mathews are going to be a force to reckon with, a hard throwing righty to a crafty lefty.Urban rocks on that UTUBE clip! he is legit. Good things to come.
All-area next season.

Help please on Charter oak and Damien, who are going to be their top players, they always have a few???? Who will be their pitchers??
I second the motion to lay off the kids, they play their hearts out and do not need to see this negativity from whomever……….
My rankings are in groups:
GROUP 1;;;paez//amat, plowman//bonita, calderaro//bonita, ponzo//san dimas, urban//dia bar
GROUP 2;;zuniga//amat, klena//s hills, mathews//dia bar, amrhein//Damien, pedroza//northview
GROUP 3 juniors to watch for;

ON LEYLAND, there is a reason he was on the brewers elite scout team with jake Hernandez of los osos, he can mash,,,,,,,, and congrats to him for not going to a commuter D1 college,, or a private college that offers half and it still cost the parents a fortune…….. best of luck to all players wherever they choose to go to school…. And how does one know what a kid got offered from anywhere…..
Andrew Melchor (NOGALES HIGH) is BACK #1 Pitcher in the SGV.
On that UTUBE video of Jake Urban, Did you see that leg pump he does before he pitches the ball? never seen that before.Kind of looks like a balk but I don't think it is?
OC,
You are weak to put down a kid who indeed does have a scholarship. You obviously never got one or you would know that they are all partial. Schools have only 11.7 for their entire roster. Who cares if the kid is playing at WSU, East coast or NAIA at least he will be moving on to the next level. Good luck to all the boys this year and most of us are all proud of those that will move on next year and continue playing at a higher level.
the catcher at northview has a scholarship to Loyola Marymount
SD Baseball
Mike Regan is the worst coach in this entire valley. He should head back to LL, because winning the VVL is for the Vikes!
SD will be lucky to finish 3rd this year. Two players that it and after that NADA!
Any other UTUBE videos from local athletes? post them here that was cool to watch. Keep them comming. Fred you should have a blog just on local UTUBE athletes.
Can EVERYONE refrain from putting these boys down to pump up your own. This will all come out in the wash. The word "great" keeps geeting thrown around here on this blog.
Let there play speak for itself. There are several names that have never been discussed on these blogs that will be big time players at the next level. Wish all the boys success.
Sorry SD baseball but the Catcher at Northview is much better than Leyland. Leyland is a big kid but his arm and feet are garbage. ie: Northview last year threw the game away.
The only reason they kid has a scholarship (partial mind you to WSU which who cares) is due to his size. He would be nothing in OC.
If he was worth anything he would have taken a partial to a So Cal Team, but no offers. Good luck freezing your butt off in Pullman.
The northview kid might not have a scholarship but he is a great high school baseball player
Of course I am bias to the Saints but I will try to be objective. Here are my picks for who will make All-area next season.
Player of the year: Kevin Ponzo (SD)
Coach of the Year: Mike Regan
P- Paul Paez (BA)
P- Brady Zuniga (BA)
C- Josh Leyland (SD)
INF- Richie Pedroza (NV)
INF- Jiovanni Mier (BO)
INF- Christian Ibarra (SH)
INF- Ryan Arnold (BA)
OF- Jeff Gelalich (BO)
OF- Kevin Jones (NV)
OF- Tim Brookes (SD)
UT- Mark Garcia (DA)
Hey OK, your comment about Urbans name popping up in this conversation, of course his name should of been on the list he's throwing in the 90's has scouts all over him, and he doesn't make the list? My son is a Junior at DBar it's really cool to watch all the excitment surrounding him. I don't understand not enjoying in others success. Jake derserves all of this he has big talent and were happy for him. Should be a exciting year for Diamond Bar we are all going to enjoy the ride. Go DBHS!
WINGKING, ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS YOU JUST LIKE TO ARGUE FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUING. I NEVER SAID THIS GUY IS A GOD, JUST THAT HES A NEW COACH AND A ALUM OF B.P.. HIS NAME IS JACOB BARENDREGT. HE DOES HAVE HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE AT SOME SCHOOL IN SAN BERNARDINO. HE SHOULD BREATHE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR INTO THAT BASEBALL PROGRAM. AND YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT ONE THING, "ZIMMERMAN" WAS A GREAT COACH. NOW PRICE ON THE OTHER HAND, MIGHT TALK A GREAT GAME, BUT HARDLY KNEW HOW TO RELATE TO THESE YOUNGMAN. AND SAYING THESE KIDS HAD GRADE PROBLEMS FROM TIME TO TIME IS A UNDERSTATEMENT. BTW, THESE ARE TALENTED KIDS, JUST NOT GETTING IT ALL OUT OF THEM. THESE KIDS WILL WORK THERE BUTTS OFF, AND ARE BLUE COLLAR KIDS. YOU CANT COMPETE IF YOUR NOT TALENTED ...
GO BRAVES !!!!
Plutko is meat. Can't wait to rack his straight FB again this year.
Way OVERRATED
Ok.... after watching the utube video Jake Urban deserves to be on that list don't hate appreciate.
I've been waiting for Jacob Cage's name to show up on one of these lists. He's ready to have a big year for Glendora.
I will give this list my 2 cents. That's probably all its worth anyway.
1. Paul Paez
2. Brady Zuniga
3. Kevin Ponzo
4. Eddie Pedroza
5. Adam Plutko
6. Jake Urban
7. Nick Amrhein
8. Nico Calderaro
9. Jason Plowman
10.Jacob Cage
How did we know the Urban kid was going to pop up in this conversation? the Utube Post.
Listthis, are you going to tell who the sophomore is? and you list of pitchers?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcOQ9fnaZHQ
Found this on RBI's website says the kids from Diamond Bar.
Bravetown, who is this god:) Lawerence Phillips is breaking out of jail and is coaching baseball? Awesome. I can't wait to go to some of the games. Always had talent? Come on? The last coach was a good one and Zimmerman was a good one too. Don't give me that they have talent. They have blue collar, hard working, tough ass kids. (who have grade issues from time to time)
WINGKING,
JUST SO YOU KNOW, B.P. HAS ALWAYS HAD TALENT, THIS NEW COACH WAS PART OF THE TEAMS IN THE EARLY 90'S. THE TEAMS THAT WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL. UNFORTUNATELY, NONE OF THESE KIDS WANTED TO PLAY FOR THE OLD COACH. IT SHOULD BE A REFRESHING START FOR A PROGRAM THAT HAS TALENT, AND FINALLY WILL PUT ALL THAT TALENT ON THE FIELD FOR THE NEW COACH.
GO BRAVES !!!!
Bravetown, Oh no, not a Baldwin Park Alum. :) that is funny.
Who cares. You guys just play everyone tough and I credit you that. Keep doing that and all will be well.
Does anyone have any utube videos of these boys pitching so I can judge for myself?
LOL....lol....
Mike,
Could you give us a detailed report on all of the picthers in your program.
Eddie Pedroza was 83-84 at the Az. Fall Classic this past October and couple weeeks ago was lights out at tournament at Cal State Fullerton. His offspeed pitches are outstanding. Paul Paez outing at the USD camp he was 87-88 touching 90. During the Cory Lidle tournament he was at 86-88.
Any other players committed in the area?
A bunch of Dad's going back and forth. Talk to some College & Pro scouts they will tell you who the best of the best is that's for sure.
Wrong,
I mean no disrespect to any of these young men, this is just my opinion for what it's worth.
I agree that Paez is a bulldog (AKA Animal)and he would be #1 on my list if not for the fact the Ponzo has just as good a fastball but better breaking pitches. As far as Zuniga, like I have said I'm just not sure he is as good as advertised from what I have seen. Pedroza is very good and like I also said has a decent low 80's fastball as long as he keeps it down otherwise he gets in trouble, also Paez does not throw in the high 80's though I think he is very capable of it, but I have not seen it the last few time I have had the pleasure of watching him pitch.
BALDWIN PARK HAS A KID NAMED ANDY SAUCEDO, I BELIEVE HE WAS THE VARSITY QB AS WELL. HE HAS A GREAT ARM. LOOK OUT ALSO, AS THEY HAVE BROUGHT IN A NEW HEAD COACH WHO IS A B.P. ALUM.
GO BRAVES !!!!
To notsuchabaseballguru
You obviously have not seen that much of these guys. Plutko has the best fastball. Zuniga's outpitch is his slider. Paez fastball is in the upper 80's and he is a bulldog. You are correct that Ponzo has the best breaking pitches. Pedroza just grinds it out and does a great job.
Yesireebob it'll be hard to even find a decent game for those hollenbeck honed horsehiders from Northview.
Go on out now and size this batch of minivikes for a new set of rings because the championship is a lock.
Talked to a few Black and Golder's Monday and they assured me their Boyz can and will knock the socks off all comers.
Northview has another kid too. I don't know his name but he throws hard.
All I know is they have a ton of pitchers and will cruz through the Valley Vista, no disrepect to San Dimas, but Northview is on another level with talent and all the coaches know it. Northview has the hardest working kids in the Valley Vista.
BLOGGERS
I KNOW THE ID OF DON #1. WILL SELL THIS INFO FOR NO LESS THEN $250,000. A HINT SHEZ REALLY COOL.
The list is pretty good though I think that Ponzo is probably the best on the list.
Ponzo - prety good fastball mid 80's, but his breaking pithches are very good.
Paez - again pretty good fastball mid 80's, good breaking pitch and devestating straight change.
Pedroza - ok fastball low 80's but keeps the ball down, good breaking pitches. I saw this Pedroza play at Hollenbeck for the Giants, but there was another tall lanky kid on that team that I personally thought was better a righty that threw hard with very good breaking pitches don't know his name or what school he attends.
Zuniga - I was never really impressed with this kid, he has an awkward throwing motion with an ok fastball and not much else.
Plutko - Throws hard?
Just my 2 cents on the young men I have personally seen.
There are several names left off this list. I remember a couple of years ago when Gary Brown from Diamond Bar was barely talked about on here, that year he went to CSF on a scholarship and kicked a** all of a sudden he became the STUD from the SGV, I find it all funny.
Love a breakdown of each position. Pitchers arent the only players on the field...
Plutko has given a verbal to UCLA
Lets try to stop ragging on teenage kids. Plutko is a talent. Maybe you don't like him but the fact is his velocity is up there. With the right coaching he will do fine at the next level.
Sorry about the Rosanna Roseannadanna moment.
I'm usually a little snide about any claim to “guruness” so I mistakenly took your comment the wrong way. My bad.
The purple socks thing? Better to just not go there. Thanks for the kind words.
Don
What purple sock thing? I was giving you a compliment Don your a wealth of information. Did you piss someone off with purple socks?
So your still mad about the purple socks thing, eh?
"It's Don #1 blogger was wondering when you would pop up. Don the baseball GURU.
Posted by: guru fan | January 20, 2009 4:00 PM"
thats exactly why plutko shouldn't even be mentioned on this list. big deal he can throw fast i'd rather have someone like amrhein who can actually win a game
When you have a fastball straight down the middle your gonna get rocked everytime. Fastball with no movement= getting rocked.
It's Don #1 blogger was wondering when you would pop up. Don the baseball GURU.
Could list this be, . . . , the GURU?
that is a claim and a half plutko doesn't throw 92; and if he does it certainly doesn't work because he gets rocked by everyone
Plutko is on the list because he can run it up to 92 mph. He hasn't had much success during his high school career so far.
Amrhein should be way higher on this list especially above plutko. plutko is the most overrated player in the valley
Amrhein should be way higher on this list especially above plutko. plutko is the most overrated player in the valley
Sierra League, The only two teams Fred considers to be in the SGV from the Sierra League is Damien and Glendora.
Only 1 pitcher from the Sierra League on the list!
List this, who are the players? Who is the sophomore committed to UCLA?
who is the soph. who's given his verbal to UCLA?
What about the Melchor kid out of Nogales HS?
Hmmmm.....There are a few names not on the list that will be a surprise to everyone on here because they clearly aren't familier with these pitchers. One is a sophmore that has given a verbal to UCLA, another has Pro scouts asking for full physical reports. It's no big deal Fred's just not aware of these pitchers. Enjoy your list.
list this,
This is a list of the area's top pitchers not who will be drafted in June. How many outstanding high school athletes make it to the pros afterall. These are high school kids having the times of their lives. When Fred puts out a list of pithcers most likely to be drafted in June then you can have your say. You are the one who is a joke. Also if you disagree with the list post yours now so we know your not a bandwagon jumper either when that draft day comes around.
Let's add where they are going or committed to:
1. Eddie Pedroza, Northview, Junior
2. Paul Paez, Bishop Amat, Junior USD
3. Brady Zuniga, Bishop Amat, Senior UNLV
4. Nico Calderaro, Bonita, Senor
5. Kevin Ponzo, San Dimas, Senior Utah
6. Jason Plowman, Bonita, Senior APU
7. Derek Klena, South Hills, Senior
8. Adam Plutko, Glendora, Junior
9. Nick Amrhein, Damien, Junior UCLA
10. Jimmy Saucedo, South El Monte, Senior
Let me guess "this list". I can only imagine what name you will bring up. What are the pitchers we will hear about?
I like the list. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
Eddie and Paul are different types of pitchers but equally effective. Pedroza is 83-87 and Paez is 87-90. The both have nasty hooks and very competitive on the mound. Paez is committed to USD and Pedroza is getting a lot of interest.
This list is a joke! Just wait until June on draft day.....Doubt will hear one of those names listed above....I bet we hear a few names NOT mentioned on that big draft day. Fred, dont jump on the band wagon when that happens!
I have seen all of the above pitch. This would be my top ten:
1. Paul Paez
2. Brady Zuniga
3. Adam Plutko
4. Kevin Ponzo
5. Eddie Pedroza
6. Mark Garcia
7. Nico Calderaro
8. Jason Plowman
9. Derek Klena
10.Calvin Chambers
If I'm not mistaken, Eddie Pedroza is a sophomore. Not a senior as you have him listed.
