Soccer postgame: Braves sneak by, 1-0
The Baldwin Park boys soccer team improved to 18-1, but it wasn't easy. Northview gave them everything they could handle before losing 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 57th minute converted by Edgar Padilla. The Braves dominated in the second half, but as well as the Vikes played, they didn't deserve to lose on a silly penalty-kick call that normally isn't called in a situation like that. The small bumpy field didn't help the Braves, but they played well in the second half and deserve to be ranked No. 1 when the new rankings come out next week.

I personally have been in this situation many times in the past. Playoff games, All-star games, etc. I have never taken anyone’s word for it. I have always double check and even sometimes triple checked to validate that it is being done correctly. With you coaches track record you would have thought he would have learned his lesson the first time.
It is really hard to believe that this guy is a head coach of a varsity soccer program and didn't know this rule. Do you understand what it sounds like to the general public reading this blog. This coach is either clueless or just got caught cheating again. For a high school varsity program competing for a league championship it doesn't look good.

Wilson Parent...Good try! Not even close! By the way, shouldn't you be at work like all the other parents? I have an exuse, I am waiting for my next class...
Posted by: proud LA alum | February 3, 2009 11:51 AM
Wait,
The player receives two yellows.
The coach should know the rules. They are CIF rules, they are common rules, EVERYBODY who is involved in soccer knows them, he is the coach.... The coach plays the player, therefore breaking the rules....he get caught.....yeah, it is not cheating
Posted by: Wilson Parent | February 3, 2009 11:44 AM
Parent, or is it Hector?
I never said it was not the coaches fault! My point is, he never cheated, like everyone has been claiming! He made bad decisons which is very different. Try reading my post again in English.

La alumn
Your team did not forfeit to Wilson, they lost to Bonita for breaking the rules. As for what players talk about, you should know better....
Posted by: Fact | February 3, 2009 11:22 AM
Fact,
Thanks for the inside information...I also know that all the games we won last year we won on the field! No need to forfeit! By the way, kids from your team are saying that you just lost another goalie to grades? Good luck today!
Posted by: proud LA alum | February 3, 2009 11:13 AM
So we have an LA Alum come on this blog and tell us it isn't his coaches fault. Then you come on here and tell us that the Wilson coach is a jerk. Yes don't worry we beleive you. You have nothing to gain with these comments?
How hard is it to open up the rule book and read it.
Better yet, he should know the rules, he is the head coach.
This is a very basic rule, give me a break.
Posted by: Parent | February 3, 2009 11:11 AM
Proud LA alum,
I think you should ask coach Hess if Recinos didn't go all the way to his sideline to let him know about the rules and to advise him not to break the rules as a favor.
Since you seem to be very close to the team. Also, ask him when Recinos helped Hess to find a way to stop the really good player from Bonita two years ago or when Recinos let Hess know about a red card received by a player who play for the next Los Altos opponent last year.
Posted by: Fact | February 3, 2009 11:04 AM
Fact,
I was in the same game and both teams played with everthing we had. When you get a chance, ask Kevin about those comments. I witness those comments and now know that things are different, not because of Recinos but because of Kevin. Kevin is a cool dude who has been raised to be polite and caring of everyone. Ask anybody who knows him...
Posted by: proud LA alum | February 3, 2009 10:55 AM
I played for Recinos 3 years ago and I remember this game as if it was yesterday. All of us (players) knew Los Altos would forfeit the game for playing an ineligeble player.
Coach Recinos walked across the field to meet with coach Hess and told him not to play the player because he would be breaking the rules. Recinos did this as a favor to Hess since he was not familiar with the rules.
Also, I have seen Recinos and Kevin interact after games and they have the utmost respect for each other. As a matter of fact, Kevin comes and hugs Recinos before every game and I saw Recinos talking to him after the game last week. Recinos has used many times Kevin as an example of a complete player.
You can say whatever you want but the truth is that the majority of Recinos ex players still come back and support him!!!

Soccerfan,
I would like to set the record straight just for you and for anyone who cares to know. For weeks now you have been making numerous posts without knowing much about what is really going on.
Three years ago, the soccer parents and the coach from Los Altos met with Mr. Roberts about a player's eligibility. After numerous meetings with all powers that be, he made the decision to allow this player to play against Wilson because the grading period had ended...now, if a coach is told by the Principal of the school that a player is now eligible to play, why would he question his decision. During the game, this player was being constantly harassed by Coach Recinos and his assistant coach. To the extent that coach Recinos was yelling at the player, "you are not that good, you suck!" After this player scored his first goal by literally beating Wilson’s entire defense by him self, he walked over to Coach Recinos and told him, "Coach, that one was for you!" and politely walked away. After our game I was walking with this player towards the parking lot and the Coaches from the Wilson side were calling him "ineligible," and started to laugh. By the next morning, the Principals from both schools talked and Mr. Roberts decided not to make a big deal out of this game and made the decision to forfeit since it would be the only other game that we would win during that season and it would not count for anything. That same day Mr. Roberts met with the team to apologize and to tell us that he made a mistake. End of story…nobody was cheating!
In regards to the current situation, the varsity coach was told immediately after the game that the player who was ejected could play the next game. For the record, referees are not allowed to speak to the coaches during or after a game but for some strange reason, he did...He also informed the coach that he was the chief CIF referee. The coach proceeded to look into the matter but failed to look at the CIF blue book. In addition, he waited for the CIF’s referee report which by CIF rules should be done within 24 hours. By Thursday, neither of the referees submitted any report about the expelled player and he assumed that this player was ok to play. I agree that this was a bad decision and once again, this coach trusted another person with authority to make his decision to play the expelled player.
Finally, there is no question about the coach’s integrity here or did he ever try to cheat. Both times he made a bad decision not to check for himself and to trust two individuals who he thought would know what they where talking about. Unfortunately he was wrong and the team will have to pay for his error.

I don't think this is about "who wins league title" I would say that Diamond Ranch is very much in it becasue they only have one loss. The problem is bigger than a league title, it goes deep into the integrity of LA athletics and their attitude that "it is not cheating until you get caught". Well, they have gotten caught twice in soccer in 3 years and I think it is time the coaching staff at Los Altos steps down.
Posted by: SoccerFan | February 3, 2009 8:39 AM
While it is sad that LA will have to forfeit the game, it doesn't really matter for the league standings
Assuming Wilson and LA win out (which they should) the league title will still come down to that final game. LA will have one loss and one tie. Wilson will have one loss. Whoever wins that game will be league champ. Simple as that.
Posted by: LA Conq | February 3, 2009 8:33 AM
I heard they have oficially forfeited the game. It makes you wonder about the integrity of the coaching staff at Los Altos because they have hadhto forfeit two games in the last three years for using ineligeble players.
Posted by: SoccerFan | February 3, 2009 8:15 AM
The headcoach new the rule. He thought he might be able to let this one slip by, just like last year. The headcoach can't be that stupid. This has nothing to do with the kid, it is all about the head coach and what he is willing to do to win a game. He knew it was wrong, and got caught again end of story.
Posted by: Who are we kidding | February 3, 2009 8:09 AM
I do NOT blame the kid. It's not his fault, if your coach tells you to play, you play...
However, the coach should have either known better or made sure or had someone on his staff make sure.
Posted by: Basic | February 3, 2009 7:52 AM
I wouldn't say Wilson is fighting hard on their end. It is very simple: Coach from Wilson was scouting Los Altos after losing to them, saw the infraction and reported it to his AD. Isn't this what he is supposed to do?
Posted by: SoccerFan | February 3, 2009 7:51 AM
CIF Southern Section Rule:
2417.2 - A player who receives a red card or a red card with a yellow card or two yellow cards in
any game (non-league, tournament game, league or playoff game) may not play in the team's next game
played.
That is straight from the rule book. Unless something was changed mid year (in which case CIF would have sent out a memo) that is the rule. I hope LA doesn't forfeit the game. I would love to see the League title come down to the LA/Wilson game next week. I know both LA and Wilson are fighting hard on both ends and I can't blame either one for trying. The truly sad part is that a kid's name is being thrown around and it isn't his fault a mistake was made, he was told to play and he did, it's not fair to him. It's too bad such a good kid is being dragged through this.

This is the major issue with sports programs at LA over the last few years. It is a direct reflection on Gano as AD at LA. Gano runs on the theory that if you don't get caught it isn't cheating. That is how he ran the football program while laughing in other face. Being part of the CIF commission for Gano is like a license to cheat. The person lacks character to be put in a position like that. He has torn apart a great program at LA and is just walking away washing his hands of the mess he has created. Let’s see how long it takes for Gano to destroy Damien’s football program? Don’t get me wrong they will win a few games but at what expense?

Isn't Gano part of the CIF commission? The Los Altos coach put them in a bad situation and I am sure the whole leauge will be cheated if they don't forfeit the game. What are we telling our kids? It is ok to cheat so you can win at all cost?
Posted by: Fan | February 2, 2009 8:58 AM
Fan,
What is the coach going to say, I can't read the rules so I took the refs word for it.
I will tell you this much the parents over at LA aren't very happy about this situation the coach put them in. This isn't the first time he has done this.
What I don't understand is the one advantage to HC's being teachers is that they are educated and we would expect them to read the rules. Their knowledge of the game maybe lacking.
Posted by: Heights Parent | February 2, 2009 8:48 AM
I heard Los Altos is going all the way to the top with CIF so they don't have to forfeit. Funny how rules do not apply to Los Altos.
Posted by: Fan | February 2, 2009 8:11 AM
Can we can call it the "Copa de Seniors"? and what would the break down be? North/South?
Thanks for the update on the Bonita girl injury.
And does ANYONE have a status on the issue of the diuble yellow, possible forfeit???
Posted by: Basic | February 2, 2009 7:44 AM
So what was the final outcome on that player from the LA/Wilson game. Is two yellow cards aka a soft red card a one game suspension?
Posted by: Parent | February 2, 2009 6:59 AM
This was posted by a Los Altos fan after the game again Wilson: "FAn,
Wishful thinking...our best player got a double yellow! If you know anything at all about High school soccer, then you know that he gets to play the next game! Nice try...mabe next time. If you were at the game you would have noticed that we ended the game with 11 players. Good luck figuring this out!"
You all need to learn the rules....

The All Star game for locals players is a tremendous idea. It should happen at the end of this season.
Posted by: All Star Fan | January 31, 2009 1:42 PM
Fred,
Great idea my friend! We need to make this All-Star game happen! What would be the criteria for choosing players? I imagine since you said "Senior" game you couldn't just pit the all-area teams because those have underclassmen.
Posted by: LA Conq | January 31, 2009 8:14 AM
The Miramonte league girls soccer standings are closer than ever with four teams in the hunt still: Los Altos (3-1-1), Bonita (3-2-0), Diamond Ranch (3-2-0) and Charter Oak (2-2-1). Sure reminds me of last year where it all came down to the last game to decide it. This is what makes this league so exciting!
FRED - Great idea about an all-star game, it would be a nice way to end the season!
The injured Bonita girl is doing okay, initially thought it was a severe strain/ligament tears but today ortho found possible hairline fracture.
Posted by: Bonitafan | January 30, 2009 8:10 PM
LA Alum,
I don't know a single head coach in any sport that would take the refs. word for it. To top it off, as the head coach he should know the rules. That is just a crazy comment. How hard is it to check the rule book? Give me a break.
Posted by: Heights Parent | January 30, 2009 2:06 PM
If a senior ref told a coach something, I would think the coach more often then not would believe them. Aren't they more trained to understand the rules than the coaches? All Wilson fans need to realize this is another way for Recinos to manipulate himself into screwing Los Altos. I don't think the coach would have played a player knowing he would have to forfeit a game. No coach would do that.
Posted by: LA Alum | January 30, 2009 1:33 PM
Fred,
Another one of your great ideas... really though, anything to give our kids a little more exposure is great so I am in. However, this needs to get going soon so teams can be contacted and all the details worked out.
It would be great way to give the seniors a good bye.
Changing topic, do you have any info on this LA/Bonita (boys) issue?
Also, do you have any info on the Girl who got injured for Bonita?
Posted by: Basic | January 30, 2009 11:27 AM
I have a comment that I will probably open to more discussion next week. Should we have a senior all-star boys and girls soccer game for area players only. I know that La Puente has offered to use their field-turf surface, but I think it would be a greay way to showcase our players. I know there is an all-star game the Sunday following Saturday championships, but that doesn't include all our players. Any thoughts??? Heck, I could even referee both games for free, which could be a fun twist.
Posted by: FredJ | January 30, 2009 11:06 AM
A soft red still constitutes a one game sit down, I think the confusion comes in that you can sub a soft red, but it is still a red as far as suspensions are concerned. Unfortunate if LA has to forfeit but that is something that should have been checked a head of time to leave no question. Kevin is a great player but he is not the team and there is more than enough talent to win in case of his absence.
Posted by: LASoccer Alum | January 30, 2009 10:44 AM
If this is true, totally unacceptable, no coach is going to take a ref. word for it. As a head coach he needs to validate the rule, you don’t take someone else’s word for it. I am sure he must have a rule book; I can't believe that he would put his team in this position again.
Posted by: Heights Parent | January 30, 2009 10:07 AM
FRED, I WOULD AGREE THAT THE BRAVES WERENT AT THEIR BEST YESTERDAY. WHEN THEY PLAY AT HOME, ITS A DIFFERENT TEAM. THEY THOROUGHLY DOMINATED MT VIEW AT BP. MAYBE IN A COUPLE WEEKS U CAN SEE THEM AT HOME AGAINST A VERY GOOD POMONA TEAM. EVEN I WAS SHOCKED AT HOW BAD THEY LOOKED YESTERDAY.
GO BRAVES !!!!

FYI to all concerned:
Blue Book Rule 2417.2 "A player who receives a red card, red card with a yellow card or two yellow cards in any game (non-league, tournament, league, or playoff) may NOT play in team's next game played."
Bonita should call CIF and request a forfeit if this occurred. The ref's are not well informed and constantly make stuff up on the fly in soccer-coaches must follow the rules even if Mommy says different.
Posted by: GHigh | January 30, 2009 9:14 AM
Coach Recinos fan,
You said, "Who cares about the kids, we must win all the time at all cost! Great job!" Is this what Los Altos did by playing an ineligeble player? Aren't you trying to win at all cost by not respectin the rules????
Posted by: FACT | January 30, 2009 8:55 AM
Bravetown, I don't think I got to see the Braves at their best. Playing on that matchbox field at Northview doesn't help them, but they obviously have a lot of quality players, they just had trouble finishing. If I threw all records aside, Mountain View might be the most complete team I've seen, followed by Wilson and Baldwin Park. I still haven't seen Los Altos or West Covina, but with a lot of our good teams in Div. V and VI, I'm expecting some locals to compete for CIF championships or at least make deep playoff runs.
Posted by: FredJ | January 30, 2009 8:43 AM
I recalled someone saying that "ref, cards, bad calls" are just part of the game. Wasn't this your argument about the goal taken away from Wilson? Same applies for this game. You have to follow rules and yellow cards, red cards are part of the game...
Posted by: SoccerFan | January 30, 2009 8:41 AM
Does anyone have an update on who got hurt at the Bonita game and the how they are doing?
Posted by: Basic | January 30, 2009 8:26 AM
Stop,
Kevin Martinez from Los Altos got two yellow cards which equals one soft red card is he suspended the next game or not.

Coach Recinos,
We love you! Thanks for sending someone to the LA Bonita game yesterday to video tape the game to prove that the kid who was kicked out of the game played! It was a great idea! Since we couldn't beat LA on the field we might as well do everything we could and use all our resources to beat them some how! Who cares about the kids, we must win all the time at all cost! Great job!

This is not about the kids name. It is about Los Altos breaking the rules again (It just happens to be with the same kid). Rules do not allow him to play. Someone has a CIF book?

According to my research if a player gets a soft red card he is out the rest of that game only. This was a recent rule change. A red card would include the additional game. A soft red card is two yellow cards.

This is for Wilson parent, soccer fan and fact: The LA coach checked with the senior referee who worked the game between LA and Wilson right after the game and was told that because it was a "soft" red Kevin was eligible to play the next game. No cheating. Now stop hating.
Posted by: Conqueror Parent | January 30, 2009 2:13 AM
If Los Altos played an ineligeble player then they should forfeit the game immediately. There's no room for cheating and one must ask: Was this done deliberately or are they so clueless that they don't know the simple rules of soccer???

Great game that ended in a tie after overtime.. Some questionable non calls by the refs, that then turned into them blowing the whistle on alomost everything towards the end..
I must say this was my first soccer game that i've attended this yr for Ganesha and the boys need to be more agressive!! To much fancy play and not enough finish! Some spectacular saves by sophmore goalie Felix Arambula.. And #12 from Pomona has tremendous speed, I believe he recorded 2 of the 3 goals for Pomona..

No report on the score from Los Altos or parents on the blog? I wonder why? Could it be that they are keeping quiet about playing a player who got two yellow cards and a red card at the Wilson game on Tuesday? I think this sounds like a forfeit!! Anyone from Los Altos wants to elaborate on why they play a kid that is suspended?

Kevin Martinez from Los Altos received two yellow cards at the Wilson game and was kicked out of the game. Many of you have seen post about this. Why was he playing today in the game between Los Altos and Bonita? CIF rules does not allow him to play. Is this Los Altos cheating again????
