Southern California Shootout

| | Comments (29) |

I just arrived at Azusa Pacific for today's SoCal Shootout. I'm covering the Rowland-Diamond Ranch, Damien-Northivew and Ontario Christian-Glendora games.
Here are the early scores:
Flintridge Prep 67, Walnut 55
Bishop Amat girls 56, Sonora 28
Ayala 54, West Covina 21

Final: Diamond Ranch 47, Rowland 46
Garrett Johnson buried an 18-footer near the top of the key with 20 seconds left to win it for Diamond Ranch, which rallied from 10 points down in the second half.
Brandon Stansell drove the late with six seconds left, but Chris Cunningham blocked his effort and grabbed it with 0.6 ticks left to win it. Johnson had 18 points to lead Diamond Ranch, which improved to 16-4. Stansell had 11 for Rowland
Final: Damien 76, Northview 73Zach Ward's 3-pointer at the buzzer was short and the Spartans survived for the win. Jacob and Justin Latham scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, to lead Damien. Rigel Skinner had 18 for Northview, which came up short after using a 23-13 surge over the final six minutes.
Final: Glendora 51, Ontario Christian 33Koz Russell had 23 points for the Tartans.

FJones,

Who is crying? I gave an evaluation of a game I saw. My honest opinion about a team that I have no malice towards nor any affection. And what I saw was a poorly coached team that played horrible defense and didn't know how to attack a simple zone.

If anybody is crying it's the people who are too caught up in their own school/kids to take an honest evaluation. You can disagree with me all you want, that's fine. You can say it was an off-game and that's fine.

I just don't think number #1 teams should have an "off-game" in areas like playing defense and running an offense.

Rob, come on, stop crying! A "W" is a "W" no matter how you get it!!! Whether it's a on night or a off night!!! one thing for sure, you don't get to be number #1 unless you earn it! Right Rob?

Damien will still get in, even if it goes on to finish fifth. They are 14-7, so even if they lost their last six games, they would still be one game over .500 and still be eligible for an at-large entry.

basketball is only worth watching the last 5 minutes. id rather watch a warrior sport, damn i miss football

DhsBB,

Well Good luck to Spartans.
The Brahmas have appeared to pick up some steam after Ayala loss, they followed with a BIG win over Chino Hills on friday then a good win over a solid Brea team on saturday.Should be a great game!

DHSBB said:

Damien has a BIG do or die game this week against Diamond Bar. If Damien loses their playoff hopes are Dunn. Glendora on Friday wil be another tough test after getting spanked by 20 followed by Chino Hills another blow out game the Spartans tanker by 17!

All that talent and they are in 5th Place?

Time for a major gut check for Damien and Coach Dunn. Win out and control your own destiny which with this talent pool is extremely doable.

Best of luck Spartans !

It's not "hater-aide" FJ. It's watching basketball in this area since 1983. I don't have a "school" since I'm a basketball fan and not affiliated with any of the SGV programs.

Your number one team in the valley was out-played for 3 and a half quarters by a team that is 9-13. And again, if it was just DR missing open shots that would be one thing. Rowland got ANY SHOT they wanted for most the game before they pulled the UCLA and stopped running an offense and tried just isolation plays. Rowland's mistake was forcing DR to play defense only the last 10 seconds of the shot clock because when they made them defend for the full time? Rowland burned them.

DR played horrible defense, their bigs got outworked by Rowland's bigs, the guards can't (or couldn't that day) shoot with one exception, they didn't know how to respond to a simple packed in zone defense.

I know you love your team, but please watch the games.

Bishop Amat boys elected not to play this year. Game last night was in playa del rey, where they beat St. Bernards.

jcaz said:

It's a shame that Bishop Amats boys team did'nt get an invite to play.

In fact, it's somewhat of an irony that the girls team got to play in this thing, but not the boys.

Just another one of those Haters. Blog about your school. Leave DR from your thoughts and fingers.

fj said:

response for "rob" did you have your hater-ade with or without ice? DR is the #1 team in the valley because they earned it. They earned it by playing "beast!" Defense is what they are known for. And even professional teams have "off nights"! don't hate rob...

SportsFan, dont waste your time on that appeal. Whatever it is people on this board have against Diamond Bar must be pretty deep. One thing i noticed though, granted we didnt have the access to message board like we do now, but that is when DB was winning and kickin butt back in the late 80's and mid 90's you didnt see Db folk up on message boards rubbing it in and talking about kids who do nothing but play hard (win or lose) and ALSO excell in the classroom!, something i dont hear a whole lot about in the message boards from many other schools who like to trash talk.

sports fan said:

DB won by 3 points. it was like 63-60. and it was a huge upset!!! o but wait i forgot you guys dont cover DB in the paper because they are in the ..?.. league. o yeah i remember the Sierra league. so why the heck wont you cover anything!? you knew this would come agian because you did this against DB in football when they came back in the 4th and almost beat Chino hills. come on now. treat all SGV teams the same.

What up with the west covina score?
What went wrong?

rob said:

Wow. Not impressed at all with D Ranch. Even if they had an "off night" shooting, the things that good teams do (play defense, run set offenses, move their feet) they don't do at all.

And this is the #1 team in the valley?
