Northview moves on, Masters next

This could be a tough weekend for the Northview High School wrestling team, which leads a list of 13 area schools who have competitors at this weekend's CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet. But coach David Ochoa has always taught his athletes that positives can be born from negatives, and it will be the same this weekend for the Vikings. Northview learned Wednesday that the Northern Division title it won this past Saturday was taken away and awarded to Sultana due to errors in scoring, which came about when bout scores were incorrectly imputed into the computer.

Northview hopes it can turn that heartbreak into success when they send eight competitors to the CIF-SS Masters Meet, scheduled for today and Saturday at Temecula Valley High School. The top nine finishers in each weight class advance to next weekend's CIF State championships in Bakersfield.
"It's been a rough week," Ochoa said. "(CIF-SS) told me of the change. I brought my guys in and talked to them as a group and told them, that to no fault of anyone with our school, scoring mistakes were made and that Sultana was declared champs. I apologized to them. It was the toughest thing I've had to do as coach.
"I've been telling them that sometimes life doesn't go your way, and you just have to put your best foot forward. I feel they can give that extra effort and try to use this to motivate it us."
That could mean trouble for their competitors. Northview, which finished third to Temecula Valley last season, brings a solid group to the tournament this weekend.
The Vikings are led by junior Frank Martinez, who was lower weight MVP last week after cruising to the 130-pound title with three falls and one technical fall, and senior Steven Salinas, who had four falls before winning at 119 with a 5-3 decision. Northview also features divisional champion Matt Lopez (215) and qualifiers Nick Jacobo (103), Jacob Delgado (112), Anthony Jarmillo (125), Marty Le Gaspe (145) and Royce Roque (189). Jarmillo and Le Gaspe were runner-ups at divisionals last weekend.
"Masters gets tougher every year" Ochoa said. "But our guys are healthy. The big question is how we handle the next few days. We're prepared."
The tournament will also feature one of the Valley's strongest contingents, with Northview, South Hills, West Covina, Bishop Amat, Glendora, Arroyo and Gladstone sending multiple competitors.
The Huskies, who finished second last week and won a dual championship two weeks ago, rank with Northview in numbers with seven entries. They are led by sophomore Dakota Behr, who won at 171 pounds at the Southern Divisional meet last week. South Hills' entries also feature Daniel Flores (103), Vincent Herrera (112), Thomas Morales (119), Mitch Chatfield (145), Mike Ramos (152) and Ty Olson (215). Olson and Flores were divisional finalists last week.
Glendora, Bishop Amat, West Covina will send four each. The Tartans are led by senior heavyweight Justin Mathews, who had a solid showing during the 5 Counties Invitational in January. Glendora will also feature Jim Wilkins (119), Haydn Schabro (145) and Jake Hoxey (152).
Bishop Amat, which finished second last week, is led by senior Steven Espindola, who won at 112 pounds. The Lancers also feature Rodger Rodriguez (103), Eric Cano (135) and Marcos Almaraz (145).
West Covina sends Jacob Depraect (125), Anthony Caudillo (130), Nicky Valdez (135) and Brian Gonzalez (14).
Arroyo will send three wrestlers, including two divisional champions - Robert Collazo (112) and Noel Blanco (145). Christian Betencourt (103) is also competing.
Gladstone will have two competitors with Hector Lopez (130) and Jeffrey Villa (160).
Other area competitors are Rosemead's Matt Fregoso (119), El Monte's Alfonso Pinedo (189), Walnut's Carl Stokes (215), Sierra Vista's Justin Flores (135), La Puente's Jesus Vargas (215) and Azusa's Bernardo Delgado (heavyweight).

I hear it was a great day for all wrestlers. And to take a look at the bracket and to see Northview and Sultana so close. But i do see that Sultana did get some points because their opponent default in 2 separate matches. And really glad to see Santa Fe having so many placed even though their one wrestler seemd robbed of the championship title. But hey, thats why we have to refs.
Santa Fe is sending the most with six!
Luke,
Yes, there were some words missing. I pushed "post" without proofreading. It doesn't matter what I was trying to say, it was a rant, that's all. You're 100% right, time to move on. Good luck to all the local wrestlers who qualified for state.
Wishbone, I'm not sure what you are trying to say. It looks like there are some words missing from your post.
Enough of the speculation, if you can prove to a degree of moral certainty, like the law states, that the scores were intentionally changed to help Northview, then send it to Fred or Steve; otherwise, just move on, like they have.
I think it was a great meet by Northview. Unless you didn't notice the area's only winner from Steven Salinas from Northview and Northview had more state qualifiers than any other school in the San Gabriel Valley - five total, three who went to the finals, with Salinas winning.
Good job Northview, you are again the Valley's best!
Masters scores posted on-line say Sultana beat NV by 1 point for first place. How much you wanna bet the result would be different it the bout sheets were handled NV boosters?
Espindola lost his next match in wreslte backs, sorry to say but he's out.
I believe that was his only loss,so he's still in.
It will be changing all day today and tomorrow.. Hey, so Espindola/Amat is still in it? I thought he was out. Thanks for the update. Keep it coming.
The lead is gonna change just every round, you have cc,cor cen.,lh,nv,sul and tv in the hunt.
sultana had a few byes in the first round, so if they win in the next round they should get bonus points to put them back in the hunt.
Espindola should be fine in the consols,he should qualifies for state
Remember that as soon as some wreslters qualify for state they will default their next match.
Announcer just said that Laguna Hills is in 1st and that Northview is in 2nd
After 1st round at Masters: Northview is in 1st place with Laguna Hills in 2nd. It says Sultana is like 38th. But that is for now. Lets try to update as rounds go by. Things do change through out the day.
yes mistakes were made and they were not just all northviews but also other schools had inconsistancies the two that were working the sheets one was from the high desert and the other was lisa there will still need to be solid proof that someone actually cheated until there is and if there is northview high school are the champions and sultana are runner ups, so dont go acting like you are cif worthy because who knows what there decision will be. so remember RULES ARE RULES
rules are rules - the CIF stripped Artesia Boys basketball of CIF Titles years after the fact when they determined rules were violated. They have actually left the championship vacant - rather than granting it to the runner-up.
It is apparent that this was done - not because "mistakes were made" but that in CIF's determination the 10 other matches with scoring inconsistencies that just so happened to swing Northview's way was enough cause to feel it was an intentional "violation" - not simply an honest mistake-10 times over.
rules are rules for all of you people who dont know squat about wrestling CIF states in order for a change in hands for a championship sultana needed to protest 30 minutes after completion of finals not 2 days later therefore sultana cannot change a thing and northview would still be champions no matter what. RULES ARE RULES
For those of you who are at leats mildly interested thanks to Temecula Valley High School and Vootage.com the will be providing live coverage of the wrestling finals today and tomorrow. You can watch it on vootage.com or the cifss.org home page.
Steven Espindola, just wrestled and was defeated in the quarterfinals 5-2 after being up 2-0 in the final 1:30.
Real exciting action with an announcer. Certainly worth watching.
best of luck to all SGV wrestlers
Fredj
What needs to be answered,
was the errors just with the Northview's bouts, or were there others? if other bouts were input wrong then that should clear this up. It seems that no one will answers that question!
Only in the blogs would you ever hear these calls for an investigation. An investigation? Are you serious, errors were made, it was reported, an apology was issued, and the proper team received the trophy. There is no way, no way to ever know if anyone did this on purpose, all you can do is spectulate. What should we do, ask they take a lie-detector test? Everyone seems to have moved on, Sultana, Northview, the wrestlers, and the coaches. Steve and I are moving on, as we should, focusing on the athletes and teams that are in the playoffs.
First thing you people should is learn about wrestling is how the scores are calculated-then you wouldn't make ignorant comments. There is a differnece between individual wrestler and team scores and how one advances in the post-season.
sultana is nowhere near being in our area-it's quite a few miles away. Maybe south Hills or Bishop Amat should have been put as the team leading the area into masters-it would make you folks happy.
Has someone tried to find how she was put in charge of the bout room? And why no one double checked her work, especially other coaches, from some these comments someone should have been doing that. Doesn't justify what she did eitherway.
Those that are eager to get some answers-go over to the school and talk tyo the coach-I'm sure he's not hiding behind closed doors.
Leave the kids alone and let them wrestle.
Good luck to all San Gabriel Valley wrestlers.
It's a shame there is so much hate in this area.
The winners after the matches are the winners. No one said that they did not win their matches. It is when it was inputed that the points were wrong. But that does not change the outcome of who the winner of the match was. Coaches and all others saw who won. The winners were not changed, just errors were made with the points in the computer.
There needs to be more facts. Has CIF put out a comment anywhere? I have read about she and a high desert person where at the table. Sometimes he read the bout sheet to her to input. that after she would print brackets out and then he would double check it. and that all this and other things can be verified. so i think we need a CIF response.
Here is something to chew on. If the Northview team was caught cheating then how does that affect the wrestlers who lost ?
In other words, if a wrestler should have won, and didnt because of the score, then has the error been corrected to allow him, the true winner, to compete in this match ?
If not, then is there still more explaing to do ?
Look people, you guys are all talking about inuendo. All of this is just internet chatter; there's no hard evidence that the Northview booster did this intentionally, unless you can all read her mind. This is not "The Verdict," where Paul Newman's characther proved that the admittance slip had been altered. All we have are what was typed in on the bracket sheet and the bout sheet. There's no link of malace, and without malace, you have no case
what a joke of an article . Yes it is true that none of the people invloved were admistrators. But I think the person involved runs the grappler program , runs the Northview summer tournaments , is involved in most Northview wrstling functions. The paper makes no mention of this? What about all the other years ? Clearly one should ask , Did she act alone ? Did any of the admistration know of this ? This shows corruption in its ugliest form , our educational system. Sad day for Northview if CIF and Northview sweeps this under the rug.
Now the comment from Ken, that was just so uncalled for. No class what so ever.
The way this article and all all articles written about Northview makes me believe that Steve Ramirez is another one of Coach Ochoa's illegitimate children.
Steve Ramirez of the SGV Tribune. You have it right. Something positive can come out of something negative. The postive is that Northview was handed a trophy as winners of CIF, the negative was that Northviews Representatives altered the bout sheets 10 separate times, all in favor of Northview.
More positives, CIF took back the title, the trophy and cif patches and gave them to the WINNERS, SULTANA, the negative, Lisa Padilla and Northview Coache continue to lie to the team and claim they weren't involved. When Lisa Padilla admitted in this newspaper two days ago, that she made the errors. Just wondering if you are part of the cover up. Wait, we already know!
Ok NV WRESTLERS.. We are all so behind you 100%! The Northview Viking Family has its head held up high and is so strong and bonded together. Nothing can ever change that! We will rise above this! We have and will always have AN OUTSTANDING AND REMARKABLE WRESTLING PROGRAM .
Coachs and Wrestlers, Good Luck at Masters and we will see you there!
Mr. Newspaper Reporter: NORTHVIEW doesn't lead our schools to Masters,
S U L T A N A does, I know it a hard concept for you to get, but SULTANA WON CIF, they are the team that leads the schools to Masters. Northview fell short just like the rest of the local schools.
I agree that was a joke of an article. Where are the questions asking how this happened? Steve did you look at past tournaments that this person has worked and seen if these mistakes were made before? I mean come on you are a journalist first and don't journalist investigate things. I mean, I already know that you have never laced up a pair of athlethic shoes in your life so why should I expect so much.
LISA PADILLA was the one who made the 10 errors, she IS a part of NORTHVIEW WRESTLING and has been for years. Did the "smartest Man" forget the many years she has been by his side, doing who know what for him, recording bouts sheets for years, at EVERY tournament. The wrestlers know Lisa Padilla, and they know she represents Northview, and they should be told the truth. LISA PADILLA CHEATED, 10 TIMES, not a few minor mistakes. Coach Ochoa you lied to your team and to your wrestling family, and there is written proof, written in this newspaper, by your suck up buddy. Not only are you cheaters, you WIN the title of Biggest Liers. Shame on you, you are covering up and for whom? YOURSELF? booo
Bulldog, other than on the blogs, no where was it stated that the school, coaches or wrestlers were cheating. Go to the other blog where this all started. There is now comments on their that state they were not at fault. There is even a comment that Sultana coach put on the calwrestling forum. that is also on the blog to be read. I know there are haters out there, but you need facts.
Steve R ,
You are so far up Ochoa *** this is funny . You make no reference as to who actually made the mistakes ,essentailly handing them a championship that was not EARNED. What a farce of an article . Get a clue ! Do a little investigation first.
Take your titles Vikings. We are all standing behind you as our Viking family continues to stand stong.
Good Luck at Masters!!
Go get em Ochoa and Vikings. Show them that there is no discrepency in winning masters titles and sending guys to state like usual. Vikings will rise above this.
