Charter Oak-Bishop Amat might happen

| | Comments (52) |

Since Charter Oak and Bishop Amat have week one games still available, the two schools have finally had "actual" conversations about meeting up next fall. If it happens it would likely be at Bishop Amat, so stay tuned, my gut feeling is that it's going to happen. Finally.

Also: Word over at South El Monte is that former La Puente coach Ray Hernandez is interested in the position. Stay tuned for more news on that front.

Below: Another cool Amat video. This time you get a rare glimpse of coach Steve Hagerty firing up his troops in the locker room.

Maybe we can get back some of those young football players that were bullied out of the football program by another coach on campus? Why is it ok for some guys to play two sports but not others?

Which sophomores, (next year Junior class) can we expect to step up and play a big roll? I remember the Acuna kid as a big time hitter.

From what I hear, Jerry McClanahan is absolutely coming back. Anderson is and will be a stud, like you said Lancer Parent. I wonder about Darien Johnson and Davis Cazares. Does the coaching staff plan to keep Johnson on the defensive side of the ball exclusively and will Cacares stay at safety, or move up to linebacker where we lose the most? Interesting questions I think. Johnson is an absolute stud and Cazares is a bonafide hitter. A name I don't hear too much that deserves recognition is the big noseguard Daniel Kane. This kid is a monster and will be even more dominant next season!

Lancer Parent said:

Domiguez 2-8 last season. Talent level not the same as last year losing the likes of Seals, Maffie, Prieto,Gasie,Gener,Price,Teter,Creager,Bowens amongst others, but This coaching staff prepares their team very well. That alone will win you games. Talents is necessary but coaching playa big part as well. Is Jerry McClanahan returning>? Jay Anderson will be a stud of a running back, this only being his Junior season.

Compton Dominguez??? said:

Compton Dominguez would be a step up from from Charter Oak.

This is not a slam on the Chargers. The Dominguez program simply has TONS of more experience playing the likes of Loyola, Carson, Corona Centennial, Redlands East Valley, Long Beach Poly, Notre Dame, etc. during its recent past.

Charter Oak's highest stab at the Big Boys was against Bishop Amat 3 years ago. And that's it...Just BA.

I do hope BA plays Dominguez or an equivalent...

Pardon the reference Stud, it is overused anyway. The team hopefully will grow, but remember "they said that last year" but the team had more talented seniors to work with. Not to say these kids are not, but more of the seniors started as juniors. Yep, there are pieces there but a lot more needs to fall in place this year. On the Freshman level I know Coach Parker well and he and his staff do a great job. Some years development of kids is easier than others it depends on who comes out and how ready they are to play. Just sayin...

AMAT 73 said:

This is what was being said about this years team. Rebuilding year , not enough talent , no offensive or defensive lines and so forth and look what the team accomplished . Coaching is in position all is fine and we will field an excellent team next year just like we did this past year. O ye of little faith. Just watch # 4 carry the rock next season. We will be in for quite a show.

Networker said:

Remember, I said,"traditionally". One off year does not a program make. Coach Parker and his coaches have "traditionally" done well in league. True, they could do more to develop more of the players on the team, but I'm sure even coach Parker is open to new ideas. I think AMAT will be just fine. I heard that several of those kids were contemplating AMAT as a choice for HS. And I would not be so quick to label a kid a "stud" because he excelled in a game of flag football? I hope it's because you were watching the drills and looking at foot speed, lateral movement, size/strength potential, short burst speed and a grasp of basic techniques....right?

amat mom said:

Truth be known and my kid was a starter and played it is true what "time will tell" says. The team faltered in league. People who are objective know there will not be a huge impact at the varsity level as in the past. Not to say they will not make varsity but play a huge role. I belive the Senior class this year was the last time Sophmores made a big impact at the varsity level right from the start. Again, it may happen but not as quickly. Also at the camp and 2 studs are not going to AMAT. Hopefully we all understand it will be a rebuilding year.

time will tell said:

Networker,

Depends on one's POV in regards to 'done well'.

The 2008 season started off 'well'.

Down the stretch against other teams actually getting better, were able to finish off the Frosh team.

WAY too much talent, BUT it was NOT developed nearly as well as it could have been. Depended too much on a few good players, which is fine IF winning is the ONLY goal.

Once the few good players were stopped, few backups were ready to step in because they had NOT been prepared to step in.

Networker said:

If I remember correctly, the Freshmen squad has traditionally done well at AMAT. Coaching appears to be pretty good at the lower levels?

Bishop Amat vs. Dominguez Week 1 @ Amat.

time will tell said:

Networker,

The players may be there, but will the coaching be there for them?

Coaching should not focus on the few who will win games at the lower levels, but must teach fundamentals so the players will get better as the season goes on.

Networker said:

AMAT will have a very good Freshmen Class this year. I was at the Football Camp and there were a few athletes out there that were planning on calling AMAT home for the next four years.

Bishop Amat #1 Networker said:

Personally, I am a Bishop Amat fan and really recruiter but have asked around some of my contacts and this is what is being said about the Chargers.

If Charter Oak can get a few Offensive Linemen to block and protect arguably the best Running Back in the area and future star in the making Quarterback regardless of which QB is chosen to be under Center this team should be poised to make another run at the title and possibly will absolutely be better on both sides of the ball than last year. I heard that Charter Oak's current juniors next year's seniors are being recruited heavily by many schools throughout the country.

Never underestimate the power of heart and character though and regardless of if you have better talent than us we will have more mental and physical toughness than you proven by our level of competition and tradition.

I'm ready to start tailgating now just as soon as I get finished recruiting some more of the best 8th grade student athletes in the Valley. Mighty are the Men who wear blue and gold! Go Lancers...

This year is an ideal year for CO to play AMAT. Bishop Amat, while still a formidable opponent, will be going through somewhat of a re-building year. That being said, I still believe AMAT will reign victorious come the fall. The timing will only give CO more of a chance than it would have had, say two season from now.

Are we not Pac5,?

Real Simple.

Amat plays 3 SGV teams,I agree, true, they need more preparation for League, but beating your surrounding neighbors shows where the best team plays out of in SGV and guess what, those players start coming to play for you and future players in middle school come to play for your program. Hagerty knows how to manipulate the surrounding schools. Should Amat lose to these schools. It does not matter they get players reguardless because they are Amat which is the only D1 team in SGV. It is a win win situation for Hagerty to play these teams in terms of getting players for the future of Amats football program.

here's a tip....get the old lady drunk and tell her you love her...maybe in her drunken state...she'll make you feel like a man instead of what you think you're doing here

So FC you are now giving perspectives from the CO point of view. I could understand if it was Damien or DR since you are the king of nitwits for those schools and so far up Roddy's a_ _ you just might know what he is thinking but CO come on now. I don't think the people of CO want you jumping on their bandwagon or giving your perspective on anything involving them. You should nothing to fear but yourself and your endless ramblings.

Esperanza? Mater Dei? Lakewood? Are we not Pac-5??? said:

Amat has already scheduled 3 SGV teams and St. Bonaventure.

3 SGV TEAMS IN ONE SEASON IS ENOUGH!

WE NEED TO SCHEDULE A RANKED PAC-5 OPPONENT!!!

I understand Amat's need to prove that it is still the SGV's premier football program. BUT, if fans want to see a CO vs. BA or an LA vs. BA game, THEN DO IT IN 2010 WHEN ALL CURRENT SGV SCHEDULE CONTRACTS ARE UP!!!

AMAT CAN THEN SCHEDULE 3 NEW SGV OPPONENTS IF NEED BE.

Check this out...

This past season (2008):

Loyola scheduled Concord De La Salle, St. John Bosco, and Hart.

Crespi scheduled St. Bonaventure, Servite, and Birmingham.

Notre Dame scheduled Servite, Moorepark (barely won 17-14), and Birmingham.

For those of you that do not know, Birmingham defeated LB Poly, Notre Dame, Valencia, and Carson in 2007 and won the City Section Championship.

So...given that info...

Someone please explain to me how scheduling 4 SGV schools is going to help Amat prepare for Notre Dame, Loyola, and Crespi???

Fear Nothing

I like you're enthusiasm, however, keep in mind that if anyone gets the tar beaten out of them, it won't be Amat.

Still, a game such as this would be the "ideal opportunity" for a possible upset on the part of Charter Oak.

First of all, as you just said, CO has some outstanding football players coming back next year.

Second, Amat has lost some quality people to graduation, and believe it or not, the first game of the year, has not been to kind to Amat over the last few seasons.

Some of you may recall that Amat could have won that Los Osos home game, a couple of years back, and perhaps even last years game as well. But of course, they didn’t.

In fact, Amat has only defeated one opening game opponent over the past 5 years, and that was, St Paul.

So yes of course, an upset could very well happen if the lancers come out of the gate against what would be an inspired Charter Oak football team.

We shall see…

Bring it on CO.

Fear Nothing! said:

Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best..."WE HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR...BUT FEAR ITSELF!!!!!"

I've gone back and forth on this and made many an excuse about anyone playing Bishop Amat but I must have forgotten what my coaches always believed and taught me....or there is still some residual "medication" in my system from the back in the day that made me lose my mind for a second!

Charter Oak should step up and knock the crap out of Bishop Amat. Beat on them and man up! Seriously...are we men or are we mice! Heck the "fun" is in trying!

What's happened to this country when people side step challenges like Paris Hilton kicks out X rated videos?

Bishop Amat is the best in the Valley. Play the best! What is there to fear but fear itself.

Do I think CO can beat the crap out of Bishop Amat????...last year maybe after seeing the DR game but certainly not after seeing the Loyola game and absolutely NOT after what they did against OLu and LB Poly.

So what's the issue here?

Butt heads, strap up the chin starps nice and tight and let's do this already!

I mean..what's the worst that can happen? This isn't the Mayan or Azrec Empire where they enslave or killed the loser is it?

Paul Cerda said:

Perfect Season For CO to Play Amat. CO has the best RB in the SGV returning, they have won a championship and have a ex-Amat QB there as well (Thropay). Amat made the playoffs last year, lost a close one to eventual champ LB Poly and has some talented returnees coming back. SH hooked up D1 Tesoro, why not have CO come out and play D1 Amat. Kiefer will be jam packed for that one. Lets get this gamed booked.
