Duarte football nearing decision

I'm hearing that Duarte will hire either former La Puente coach Ray Hernandez or former Blair and Marshall coach Tip Sanders. An announcement could come as early as Monday.

have they hired a new football coach at Lp or durock yet? im getting tired of mrs. manless thinking he knows whats best for those schools football programs. now one knows how your gonna be as a coach doesnt matter what area u coach at whester its a public or private school. only time will tell for them.

Cougar said:

My understanding is that they are waiting to hear from the district regarding the availability of a teaching position. If none they will hire within.

By the way...with all of the discussion over former LP coaches, When is LP going to hire a new Head Coach? Heck, Hernandez resigned about 4 months ago...what's the hold up?!!!!

BP Tradition? said:

That is almost as funny as people who still talk about Damien Tradition.

BP Tradition? said:

Yes that would. I would be amazed to see how everyone's 'truth' would change if they had to put a name by the comment. BTW- I know a guy who coaches at REV. He coached with Ward at LP and BP. We have had conversations in the past about his coaching stops, etc. I have overheard him say that the entire problem with the BP situation was the former principal. Not just for the football team but the entire school. All of the LP staff that went to BP with Ward left after the first year and did not coach there the second year because they could not stand her. She did not do anything to help the football program and evne cancelled one of their away games because of the fires. As for Hernandez - Why wouldn't he do a good job at Duarte? Why is it such a big deal? Sometimes people take this stuff way too seriously. I think much of it is frustration that they aren't the ones getting the attention so they talk crap just to try to stir the pot. BTW - BP tradition? what have they had about 3 winning seasons in the last 15 years. I don't know if I would call it tradition.

In the Know said:

Ok anyone who said Ward was a Porsche, has A never seen a Porsche and B you missed the Ward era at BP... He had the exact same staff, and just couldn't deal with the school, staff, and students. Never assume that just because the kids look the same that they are the same. BP is and always will be different than LP... Tradition and expectations are different at every school and a coach must know, understand and respect all of those to be successful. Whoever gets the Duarte job, has big shoes to fill as Crutchfield has had great success. I wish who ever gets that job the best of luck

I am speaking on the LP situation because I have friends who have coached there, currently teach there, and I have a high school friend who has a son who played for Hernandez. Hell I played against Calvillo, Jones, and Traylor. I also married a 1990 graduate of LP who still lives in the area (over by Sparks middle school). So I guess that answers the question on how/or why I can comment or know about the LP situation/history.

I'm not talking trash about LP. I think LP football could be a good football program, but it won't be until the administration at LP stops driving off HC's. In the last 9 years, there have been 4 HC's and now their working on #5. How can you establish any type of continuity if you change HC/staff ever 2 to 3 years.

Finally, I am busy at my current school teaching and coaching. However, I can still comment on anything I want. I think this is still a free country and there is such a thing as freedom of speech.

mrs. man,

why do u even care bout Lp u said u coach at some school in the I.E. u dont see me talking trash bout your school u supposedly coach at? imma admit i did graduate from lp, i actually played for coach ward.

A Real Insider... said:

Let me start by saying…I grew up in LP, I played sports at LPHS and graduated from there in the 70’s. I have coached sports at a couple of the LP area high schools. I have been involved as a youth coach in the SGV for over 25 years. As a matter of fact I am currently associated with LPHS to this day. With that being said, both LP hater and Mrman1 make some good and pretty accurate points on this matter. Both of them seem to have some inside knowledge of the LPHS football program over the last few years but I think Mr man1’s comments are right on the money. I think coach Hernandez is an excellent coach but coach Ward was the best coach I’ve ever witnessed at LPHS. Not only was he a great coach but he surrounded himself with an outstanding coaching staff. Now before some one butts in and asks what happened when he went to BP? Well I can’t say for sure but I do know that he had a completely different coaching staff at BP than he did at LP. Getting back to Hernandez…if he gets the head coaching nod at Duarte, I believe he could do a great job there but I think he would need to start by picking up a couple of Crutchfields assistants (by the way Crutch had a couple of good ones himself). This way it would make an easier transition.

Best of luck to whoever gets the job!

Redlands also made it to the Inland Semis but that was 2006. Anthony White coaches there doesn't he?

Good Programs said:

Well if it was 2 years ago that would be either Chapparal, Corona Centennial, Santiago, or REV. Why would you even care so much about LP if coaching at those schools? Seems there would be plenty to occupy your thoughts/ time with those programs.

mrman1 said:

I meant the team I coached on went to the Inland Division semi's 2 years ago. Sorry for the grammar errors..............it's early and I'm replying to someone who is obviously not that smart.

mrman1 said:

LP gets the undersized kids who live in the community. Their some scrappy and hardworking kids, but they do not get the type of athletes that go to West Covina, CO, SH, etc, etc, etc. In addition since the school is 95% Hispanic (which there is nothing wrong with, you don't see that many Black, Samoan, or white athletes on the team. I have not coached at LP, but I have lived around the area and I have coached against them. Now, if anything I have just said, is wrong you let me know. The last Samoans you had there were in the early to mid 2000's and the last real black athletes LP had was during the late 80's when Calvillo played (Dwayne Jones and Michael Traylor). You sound like a student or recent graduate, so please stop trying to question a grown man about stuff he knows about.

As for where I coach at now, I will give you a hint, the coach went to the Inland Division semi-finals 2 years ago. I will let you do the research on this.

mr man have u ever coached @ lp? u dont know what type of students lp gets, trust me. exactly what schools did or do caoch at?

LP Hater,

1. I have coached varsity football for over 10 years and been fortunate to be associated with 2 very successful programs. 1 in the SGV and 1 in the IE (whom I still coach for).

2. I never said, Hernandez was a bad coach. Heck, he is a good coach, but I don't think he is the right person to lead Duarte. Those kids are way tougher than the LP kids and have more problems than the LP kids. If he couldn't keep those LP kids under control, how in the heck can he keep the Duarte kids under control?

3. Yeah, I called Ward a Porsche, but only in comparsion to Hernandez. Since Ward has been a head man longer and was successful at LP and at BP, that is why I give him the nod. Maybe I should have called him a Tahoe instead. Ward's only downfall has been his temper and mouth.

4. Instead of all you LP fans getting upset at what someone says on this blog, you need to get mad at the LP administration and HLPUSD. They are the reasons why good coaches don't stay at LP. No quality or experienced coach wants to come there because it is has a bad reputation when comes to how it treats it's coaches!! If you think I'm lying, ask any veteran HC or any veteran position coach (I doubt you know any, so this is why you make stupid statements). Until the LP administration figures out that they need to leave their coaches alone unless their doing something wrong...they will continue to either get (1). guys who are getting their 1st HC job or former HC's who messed up at other schools and are trying to redeem themselves. Anyway, both types end up leaving LP because of all the insanity that goes on there. In the end the only people who suffer are the kids. HC's will always find new jobs, but kids only have 4 years of athletics.

Did someone really just call Rick Ward a Porsche? LMAO!!!! Wow! That might be the post of the year!

Ray Hernandez WAS NOT released. Actually no offense to Tip but Ray would be a score for Duarte. He is an all around football guy, who KNOWS the game ! Best of luck to him & Duarte.

crutch is coaching at dr next year, you talk about a perfect fit !!!

Cougar said:

I think that the administration needs to take a hard look at themselves, the decisions that they have made during and after they released Coach Crutchfield.

How do they allow a football program, and at one point it was a program, to get to 38 athletes, and no Freshman Football Team?
No athlete interest in a football team.

They had 10 interviews and the best they can come up with is a coach who was released, for whatever reason, after going 1-9, and a man who is not even a certificated teacher?

This school is in need of a football program, not a football team.

mrman1 said:

Boomer,

I totally agree you, but I doubt if that happens. Crutchfield's son will not play a down at Duarte next year. I bet money on this.......he ends up at Bishop Amat and Duarte has given him a perfect excuse to get a hardship waiver granted.

Well the sorry behind Montview League will have a new champ next year.

boomer said:

it might be a big risk to hire hernandez considering he was at a school in the same league as duarte. i'm not sure if he can put up with the atmosphere at a school like duarte. not only that, whats gonna happen to wardell cruthfield III?? will he stay and play for another coach after his father is fired? if he stays, he probably will have no respect for the new coach, especially if its hernandez(once again, he came from a school in the same league), and that can be a cancer to the team.

mrman1 said:

Hernandez is a good coach, but he would be the wrong fit for Duarte. He has never coached, dealt with, or been around the type of athlete that Crutchfield was able to coach/motivate/inspire/and relate to over the last 4 years. Hernandez might have coached a few of these types of athletes at Rosemead, but Duarte is totally different (like comparing LP to Pasadena).

Before anyone goes crazy on what I just wrote, sit back and think about it. It might be harsh, but it's the truth. Those kids are going to look at him like he's stupid and then bolt for either Monrovia, Muir or even Pasadena (once they find a coach). Hell, it won't help either that he was the ex head man for the enemy as well. Hopelly the princpal at Duarte makes the smart choice.

Oh yeah and for the kid who compared Hernandez to Rick Ward, let me give you a piece of advice: that's like comparing a Porsche (ward) to a Honda (Hernandez).........there is no comparison. Ward would coach circles around Hernandez.

wassup lp haters said:

to all u guys u hated on hernandez from lp, like a teacher i dont wanna name and the president football booster who complained just cuz he had his kid on the team and he was getting cut, your just pieces of s*** to me, hernandez did a good job so what if he had a bad year, doesnt every good coach have a bad season here and there all i gotta say is if he gets the durock job hes gonna dominate the montview league cuz he gots that rosemead type defense. hes just like the wards a good coach but admistation dont back him up.

Fred have you seen this?...I heard about this guy on Jim Rome, and then saw it on the NFL network. HAHA this is pretty crazy!

Hey SGVFBFan, We know Ray and trust me theres no need to bash the guy. he couldnt hold his players at LaPuente together, what makes anyone think he can do it at Duarte? Not me.

SGVFootballFan said:

Gee, I just can't wait till all the idiots who don't even know Coach Hernandez get in here and start bashing the guy!

New York said:

Tip has turned two different "losers" (Marshall and Blair) into winning teams. Duarte has a real opportunity with Tip. I hope they make the right choice. Of course, any new coach will need the full support of the administration and community in order to be successful.

Cougar said:

Who ever gets the job has his hands full.
No freshman team and 38 boys in the program means there is lots of work to do.
