Gonzalez pops up at Montebello
By Roger Murray
Montebello High School has a new football coach, and the Oilers didn't have to go far to find him. Pete Gonzalez, well-known in the city where he grew up and graduated from Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High School, has been named to replace Nishil Shah, who resigned after the 2008 season.

Gonzalez was recently fired from St. Paul, where he led the Swordsmen to a 22-15 record overall and to a 6-1 mark in the CIF playoffs in three years at the helm. His team went 5-5 in 2008.
He took St. Paul to the CIF-SS Western Conference semifinals in his first season, then led it one step farther the next year when the Swordsmen won the championship.
When he was terminated at St. Paul, he said the only reason given was that the administration "wants to take the program in a different direction."
Montebello athletics director Tim Murphy said Wednesday afternoon that the search for a new coach received 18 applications.
Murphy said Gonzalez has indicated he will bring most of his staff with him from St. Paul. But offensive line coach Casey Morales will remain at St. Paul, where he is also the head baseball coach, and defensive coordinator Gilbert Jimenez has applied for coaching positions at several area schools.

I used ro coach popwarner teams & I take offense to your comment!
I also watch local high school rival games during football season but I have to say Coach Gonzalez & staff made history in 2007 and I followed it in the paper up until the championship game at Saint Paul against Palmdale but I made it a point to be there in person & it was exciting.
I met coach Pete that night and let me tell you he most definately has class on a night like that he made time to speak with me & thanked me for my support! GO OILERS you are lucky!!! Good luck coach Pete.
I got to see St. Paul play two seasons ago against Servite. Servite made St. Paul look like a PopWarner team. The SP coach Gpnzales had no class.
You know, to tell you the truth, we never really know what actually happened over there at St Paul.
In fact, we rarely ever really know the inside stuff that happens unless someone spills the beans in here.
However, what I do know is that, this is without a doubt, the best move that this football program could have made.
Gonzalez is a proven winner and he is a winner that comes from a wonderful institution, regardless of the fact that that they are still, the slim to so may Lancers(sorry, had to do that you know).
All kidding aside, congratulations coach, and good luck !
