You are just an upset dad because Dunn and Phillips told you the truth about your son: that he sucks at basketball. Let it go!

Because...Damien is a good school, no a great school with far more positive going on than you'll find here on a HIGH SCHOOL FREAKING SPORTS BLOG! This parent feels wronged, maybe rightfully so. And this is his therapy. I do get that. And I'm glad it's now put to bed.

"THIS" is not Damien. Damien is so much more than "THIS" in here. Like this Dad said, his kid has a great life, probably entered USC very well prepared. Like he said, people will come to great schools ESPECIALLY in this economy, because if the public school system wasn't sketchy enough, not they're cutting big-time. People want to make sure they do the right thing for the kids. And Damien is a great place to enroll your son.

With all the turmoil with Damien basketball team, why should I take my son there? There's lots of other schools with good basketball programs in the area.

Why do think Dunn treated your son like crap. Do you think it had anything to do with your constant meddling or undermining of the program and trying to be the voice of the parents of damien who thought they were being short changed.

Thanks I can respect and live with that. I was torn between writing "Let it go" and "Leave it at that" and it came out ...Let it at that"....no one's perfect...maybe "I" should remember that as well.

Hopefully now I can just blog about sports and leave the other stuff where it belongs....in the past.

Damien will survive this and anything else that comes it's way. Next year should be extremely exciting and fun to watch. My youngest will be a Varsity Debater next year and hopefully get to travel across the country in debate Tournaments represneting the school he loves.

Coach Dunn is terrible and Damien went to the semi-finals and came within 24.7 seconds of defeating the top ranked team in the division!

Spartan of the year, couldn't have said it better myself. In the times I've seen it awarded teh coaches usually say something along the lines..."if" this kid....I'd never lose a game or "kids like these are why people get into coaching"..it's a tremendous honor for the simple fact that it takes place when no one is watching...day in and day out...having a positive attitude and working your butt off...:for the team".

Like I said before..."It's never been about playing time" playing for your school is a privildge and an honor...just like coaching.

Actually Spartan of the Year is exactly that, a Senior Award.

However on teams the award is given to a player on a team that exemplifies the Spartan Spirit and shows leadership, determination and effort. These are Coach's Award specific to that sport.

Actually Scott Morrison was a Spartan of the Year when he graduated.

Usually, the Spartan of the year award goes to a kid who works his tail off but is just not as gifted as the other players. Not knocking anyone, that is a awsome award to win in my opinion, however, it usually goes to a kid that shows heart, not so much skillor talent.

Things have sure changed since my days at Damien. I thought "Spartan of the Year" was a Senior award.

Go to a baseball practice and hear the buzz. This guy knows what he's doing! This guy is running practices like we've never seen at Damien. We finally have a coach! We finally have a program! He cares about the kids and treats them like men. Yet no one ever complained and went along with Vasquez didn't they? BURP!

Actually I do know Jake very well. It's always a pleasure to speak with any Cannon, especially Jake. I made mention of Jake to illustrate a point that has gone off into his playing ability, or lack thereof. That has never been at issue, but somehow that's the soundest of footing for this discussion. At Damien it has been a tactic of sorts by Damien bloggers to attack dads with overblown and distorted views of their sons abilities, or at least that always been the claim. That has never been the case then and now and in some very insidious fashion really speaks to the cowardice that ignores the issue at hand. The lack of accountability and decency when discussing parent and coaching dynamics at Damien. It isn't about playing time, and never will be with me or most parents at Damien. As the saying goes at Damien, if we wanted to go to Bishop Amat we'd BE AT BISHOP AMAT! (no offense Lancers but you get the point) Jake's situation, as it has been told to me personally, wasn't playing time or an assessment of Jake's talent. Anyone who claims to know him or his family knows better. That's a bastardization of facts and a distortion of epic proportions to even introduce those issues and an insult to Jake's family, and "you" should have known better. Jake just wanted to be part of the team and did so without any expectation of playing time, that would never come from any Cannon . His Dad just wanted to be treated decently and professionally, nothing more. In fact, Jake's dad coached most the Damien players in Travel Ball "thru" high school! His mom just wanted it to all go away, she's the sweetest. Read Jake yearbook comments and maybe you can read between the lines, Jake was treated poorly, to put it mildly, by Dunn in every facet imaginable. Yes everyone knows Jake hustled and gave his all, all the Cannons do, but my point is if a kid as well rounded and decent as Jake Cannon is can be reduced to making comments about his Dad and his "marginal" playing ability than we have lost our way at Damien if thats what it takes to defend Dunn's tactics. I once told Dunn that Coach Phillips called the team's effort F@@ and my son's shot Q888r. Did it several times during practices and games. In those days the gym practices were closed but several players said it happened. When I heard him at a San Dimas Tournament call their effort 2ag and ##er so loud it could be heard in hall I went to Dunn. Prior to this, me and Dunn were always on speaking terms, got the emails to prove it.. In fact when Coach Roy was ejected at the Claremont Tournament he asked me what happened and things were cool. After I told Dunn what happened he said something I'll never forget, "You know..I know it's true because I heard him myself...but for the life of me...I hate to say it...but I didn't somehow think it was wrong." Tough to argue why Coach Phillips is still coaching at Damien. Once when my oldest was playing for Dunn the seniors went on a trip, maybe even San Diego and my son decided to skip the trip in hopes of getting some playing time seeing as only Derek Bruce and my son were not going on the trip. My son is similar to Jake in his hustle and heart and some would say in his ability, anyway we're beating the tar out of an over matched La Puente team by 35 or 40 in Summer League! My son hasn't played all summer, whatever. Suddenly with less than a minute or so Dunn puts my son in. Great! We're shooting free throws and up by 30 or 40 in the 4th with less than a minute to play...the ball in inbounded and the ball goes out of bounds ,,,BALL DAMIEN!! Great!!! ...guess what? ...Dunn pulls him after standing for a free throw and La Puente committing a turn over. 10 seconds max! My son is going into his senior year...that was as low as anything I've ever witnessed. The famous Dunn Walk of Shame back to the bench. Me and Dunn talked after the game for the first time since I told him about Phillips 8 months prior. No apology for Phillips, no Phillips apology to the team, nothing about zero tolerance, Nothing. To this day. I told Dunn what I'll tell you..."There is no reason to embarrass a player like that. No matter how much you think the dad deserves it or whatever." The last time I spoke with Coach Phillips he was asking me to "take it outside" at LA FITNESS in La verne in front of my sons for comments he viewed as "cancerous"! Guess he reads the blog as well. He might have wanted to "thump" for my blog comments but I think it had more to do with what I asked him first..."Coach did you think it was okay to call players q###rs and *ags?" He's quite the showman that Phillips is. Did it in front of at least 15 players waiting to play. As the dust settles a current Bonita player asks me..."Did he really say that to his players?"

Sometimes the "truth" isn't what you believe or want to believe..don't you know that by now my friend? The war, the church, the stock markets..sooner or later the truth comes out.

Now tell me is that a "personal grudge" I have or should I have gone out to the parking lot and "continued our conversation" ? Better yet how would you have handled it? Don't speak about my kids or my beef until you walked in my shoes my friend.

Great comment. There is no doubt Jake is a great kid. He is smart, hard-working, and kind. I know that Jake was upset because he was not getting the playing time or the credit that he (or his dad) thought he deserved. Unfortunately, he is a 6'0 big man with marginal basketball skills. Jake always was praised for his hard-work and teamwork during practice but he was just not good enough to ever get playing time. Unfortunately, sometimes great kids don't get what they deserve due to limitations in athletic ability. Sure, Dunn could have started Jake every game and lost every league game. Damocles' sword, my friend. Play Jake, lose league, get fired. Play better basketball players, win games, build a program, keep your job. How would you handle the situation? Are we the one's to judge Dunn's decisions for his program? Oh, and by the way, Jake's dad was a coach at Chino and always thought that Jake was a great basketball player. Dads have a tendency to exaggerate the skill levels of their sons. If Jake's dad really thought Jake should be playing he could have transferred to Chino and been a starter there. Hopefully, we can stop using Jake as an example but the bottom line is there are "Jakes" every year, at every level, in every program throughout the country. Some great kids don't get what they deserve. By the way, I am not a teacher nor do I coach at Damien.

Sure you know what you're talking about? Chris Adams and Chris Reyes are Fr /Jr and both started. Last year lost 4 starters. people a mad when a Championship was mentioned earlier and just what? One game away!

That's not the Cannon story. Dunn hated the Dad, no one knows why and Jake who would be the first to agree with was marginalized by Dunn until he finally had enough. Whrlen you're a senior and you're not invited to San Diego tournament that's bad. Dunn should have cut him instead of marginalizing him until it was painful to watch.

To answer someone's question about the Cannon's. Great family. Great kids...jake is an amazing kid. Should he have played varsity basketball? NO. Dunn only kept him on the roster because of the family. Not an athlete, that's all. He will be extremely succesful in life for sure. But why would someone bring this up? Kid was not good.

Lathams numbers? ummm...the thought "get a life" crossed my mind. I can't even assume their parents are pushing this. Even parents who love their kids would be more subtle. Let's say this. Some kids screw up off the court and it hurts the team. i think that's what happened here. From what I hear, they were relatively lucky to still be on thwe team at all. But nobody gives anyone credit for compassion...you people make me laugh.

We are supposed to believe that NEXT YEAR, replacing 4 starters, that DAMIEN should win CIF in a league where 3 teams made the final four in their divisions? Fred first thanks for the recent article LET THEM PLAY, better late then ever i hope you can do a follow up piece on our BB program ,being that for the second straight yr we are the only local school SGV area to represent in the CIF finals in boys basketball as you know no one including you has given us a chance against the heavy favorite WINDWARD to even compete in the final , may i remind you last yr when we played a very good Pac Hills team defending champion with three frosh,1 soph,1 senoir we were able to pull off the upset this yr, with still 3 underclassman two jrs, we feel that with our solid coaching we will give Windward a solid challenge in the final we hope we can get the same support from our local paper the same way Cams got from there local paper LNG BCH TELEGRAM, refer to article on saturday 2-28 after semi final game ,thanks in advance fred for your support1

You clearly have no idea what went on with the Damien program this year. Suffice to say that there were very good reasons why the twins saw no playing time in some games and diminished playing times in others. And your assumption that Dunn was somehow being arbitrary or worse only shows your bias towards Dunn. Get the facts before you jump to conclusions. You know what they say about when you assume things. If you knew the facts, it would make Damien's run in the playoffs all the more remarkable and you might give Dunn a fraction of the credit he really deserves.

little birdie, knowing dunn and playing for dunn are two different things. like playing for bobby knight is different than playing for bobby knight. I expect more and believe in the john wooden type who are the same on and off the court. gracious, demanding, stern and exceptional role models and believe character is honed and respected. is that too much to ask? let me know.because i know dunn personally as well and did and do have sons who play for him. we love damien but no coach on damien soil is tougher to understand or tolerate.

i think if I went thru the trouble of actually double checking what my eyes already seen once maybe you can take the time to not insult people when the facts don't support your position.

justin and jacob started the year on fire until the rialto game when neither played. In the next 11 games 7 times one or the other either DNP or DNS. 6 of the 11 games were loses after starting the season 9-1. In 5 out of the 8 first games J&J averaged over 37% of the scoring and twice accounted for at least 50% of the scoring and once 41%. Tough to argue they had it going and the team knew they were on to something special with chris adams and chris reyes coming along and big mike waiting to pop out like he eventually did down the stretch. By this time the wheels were starting to come off and the team was searching for answers. Dunn found them in going to Johnson and Maxwell who were neither good defenders or competent scorers and really pale in comparison to two 6'3" athletic leapers with speed and proven scoring ability. Throw in 6'3" leaper/shooter Josh Dominguez and you'll agree Damien really did have better options than a hard working but slow 6 footed defender in Maxwell and a 5'7" point guard with suspect dribbling skills in Johnson who was given ample time to develop during his first two seasons when he rarely came out of games and Dunn flirted with moving him up to varsity his soph year only to sit his entire junior season. That's not even discussing Malcolm Irving who also an athletic 6'3" banger and slasher who can be TO prone but that's usually because he's trying to do too much or trying not to sit the next 3 games.

The point I'm making is Damien always had the talent to win a Championship this year even when people said differently. Why is that picking on Dunn? Dunn's a big boy and can handle criticism because it comes with the territory, even at Damien. Next year, like a said Damien will be an even deeper more talented MONSTER...mark my works. The Freshmen class coming in will have 3 Varsity players and maybe two will start given their AAU history.

Dunn is the luckiest man on the planet! How many other schools can lay claim to the wealth of size and depth that comes in thru Damien's doors...annually with a less than marginal 6 year record.. When I saw Brian at the Mayfair game with his Dad talking to Dunn I thought... how did Mater Dei blow that one...he's that good and that well scouted. Been trained by the best personal trainers, shooting and dribbling coaches in So. Cal for years...and his kid sister is something else. She used to work with Craig Hodges at NJB and can really put on a show. Both played on my son's travel ball team for a couple of years.

Count this! Damien will be in the Championship Game next year with Brian and his other AAU "friends" ...is that hating Damien or hating Dunn to say that? Watch for Brian V....and you thought Tiger Cortes could shot! You ain't seen nothing yet!

Nuff Said, from what I have seen on here, the way the "Damien community" tears down their coaches and even their "own house" I am really glad I am not a part of it. It seems like Damien is the house on the street that is always having problems, we all have that house on our street, the rental that everyone knows is just going to give us one headache after another. Again, the Damien community is really funny, they act like nothing but a championship is acceptable in Basketball, football, or baseball yet they have something like 1 C.I.F. championship in all 3 of those sports combined over the last 20 some odd years. The Damien community is really "Amazing".

All I know is that, as I asked, what's the deal with Latham? From the minute I saw him play against Ike he looked long, athletic, could absorb contact and score, rebound, and handle ike's pressure. He did all of that in a minute. I thought he might be an underclassmen - but now I find out-no. It seems in a game you have to win - you pull out all the stops.

"dunn's treatment of the lathams": what??? well, let's see, justin started just about every game. and when damien absolutely needed a basket, who was the play run for? justin latham (for the record, he missed, but that happens). justin played a great game friday. he would've played more but he came out because he kept cramping up. jesse maxwell played for him because he's a much better defender than jacob. look, the simple fact is, you shorten your bench in the playoffs, and your best players, like chris adams, have to be out there. there just wasn't anywhere for jacob to play.

as for "more iMcredible," get your facts straight. no damien assistant coach teaches photography. one damien assistant did go to stanford. he teaches history. so clearly you have no clue what you're talking about, regarding dunn or the program.

dunn routinely talks on his cell during class and even has been known to leave the classroom unattended and come back without teaching one single minute...sometimes waving the students out without so much as the next day's assignment.

his assistant coach's photography class is a joke. typical assignment...take 10 pictures and submit them. random pictures taken on the way to class....for a grade! is that waht they taught him at stanford?

dunn learned that trick from morrison who never wears damien green any more. what a sore loser. love the pacific university sweatshirts, nice touch. try smiling some time.

Oh, Matt, by the way, the students think you are ridiculous. For months, you would hide and not really be seen outside your classroom. Even when you came out you were dressed normally. But the last 2 weeks you were strolling the halls with all your Damien basketball gear. You were smiling and had your chest puffed out...and we still think you are a joke. The team goes to the Final Four for the first time since 1985 and you say Dunn has control issues. Damien holds heavily favored Eisenhower, a team that averages 82 points a game, to 48 points and comes within 30 seconds of going to the championship game and you say that Dunn has control issues. Damien wins more games (61) in the last three years than in any other 3 year period in the history of the school and you say Dunn has control issues. Too funny! Too bad for you and the rest of the Dunn haters, Dunn will be at Damien as long as he wants to be and Damien basketball will continue to win basketball games and enjoy the success it has not seen since LeDuc was there as long as Dunn sticks around.

You Damien people are really something!! I would never want to coach ANYTHING at Damien. Dunn takes his team deep into the playoffs and all you people can do is talk about how bad of a coach he is?? This on the heals of the football and baseball coaches getting fired in large part because of parents starting letters of no confidence. Why would anyone in their right mind want to coach there?? I have talked with a couple of former coaches from Morrisons staff and they say that they are glad to be gone, one saying he was not coming back regardless if Morrison got fired or not. Why don't you people try and support your coaches for a change? Your new baseball and football coaches could use the support.

Whats the deal-The Lathams were seniors and jacob was in dunn's dog house along with josh dominguez who was the teams second best shooter. Dunn has control issues and if he doesnt "like" you he will tell you its your job to get him to like you and he will sit you even if your the best player because he says that it his way and it works

Was at the Nogales-Canyon game last night. Good game. Canyon is disciplined as hell on offense and probably is best screening and cutting team I've seen all year. Nogales played well and Canyon didn't really give them trouble on the defensive end, the Nobles just didn't hit the shots they normally would.

Well coached team on Canyon, although their coach does look like the kinda guy who would slip GHB in a girls' drink at a club (although he is a helluva coach, he just has that look)

damien...ummm...did EHS hit two "5 pointers"?..."we were ahead by 10 points almost the whole game"...now tell me honestly former player...any reaosn dunn didn't take out jake and go with the lathams instead of johnson and veith in stretches that would have put the game away. could your class have beat this team or for that matter when you "lost' your playoff game should "you" have lost?

next year damien is scheduled to get a 6'2" guard, named brian velasquez, with increidble range and slick handles. if he comes he'll bring two more state ranked players with him. damien will be a monster next year. talk is that sean rooks son cameron rooks is thinking about coming if sean helps coach. when this happens dunn will have the keys to a bugatti when you wreck those it makes national news...stay tune...props for backing your former coach...like all damien students you're a credit to your school...hope college basketball is working out...learn alllot there didn't you?

i dont get why all these people are hating on coach dunn. i played for him and he's a good coach. we were up by 10 points almost the whole game against EHS. what killed us was the last two offensive sequences for damien. the missed layup by justin latham, who played a hell of a game, and missed free throws. it wasn't dunn's fault, it wasn't the players fault. the ball just didnt bounce our way at the end. dunn called the right plays, we just couldnt finish it. good job spartans. watch out for chris adams next year. he's gonna be killing kids. and if his friend kevin atillo can actually train hard this summer and get back on the team watch out

EHS had no player taller than 6'1" and couldn't hit any outside shots and continually drove to the basket and beat johnson and veith to the basket yet no twins on top at 6'3" and athletic. no irving ? dunn mismaged the game and should have beaten EHS by at least 15 yet snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again! karma is a real

get job dunn. you out gunned the sgv in preseason to save your job, got out coached during league to put your job at risk and some how entered the playoffs an under dog in every game except baldwin park with the most talent team in your division yet were outcoached and out performed again in a close game. any think damein was not the better team last night? playoff rankings are based on season performance and noT ability or talent or damien is the # 1 seed going away. well at least the jake veith era is mercifully over, loo late for the lathams though. where will the lathams play next year after dunn's treatment of them?

dunn's wisdom-what's the deal with Latham? I saw Damien for the first time last night and saw #3 come in at the end of the 3rd quarter handle the press and make a drive, scored and got fouled.
The 4th quarter started and he was not on the floor. He came back in and got a 3 pt play-only to be removed again. I thought maybe he was an underclassman (he is rather slender) and was "earning his stripes", so to speak. Then someone said he's a senior?

Charter Oak moving to the Sierra? CO can compete in football but not in all the other sports. Would they replace Chino? It would be great to see a Glendora/CO football game. I say do it.

i think we should congradulate damien. they set a prime example of not quiting no matter how rough things get. i mean come on now, to enter the playoffs after finishing 5th, and going on a losing streak, and watching your team break down would have been like punishing the kids and embarrasing them for another game. but they went out there and busted ass into the semi finals. great job spartans.

Why so much hate for Damien? They made a great run, played an amazing game, could have won but didn't. All you parents who's sons don't play, transferred and then got cut by a 3-20+ team, and dads who's sons weren't good enough to play on freshmen should shut up and get over yourselves. Damien played a great game and should be proud of their run.The defensive strategy was amazing and held eisenhower to a season low in points. The offense was a joke. the spartans looked lost with the ball and had 28 turnovers. there was seemingly no sense of direction when damien had the ball. and damien's best scorer jacob latham played 45 seconds and had 5 of damiens 45 points

Damien had this game tonight..unfortunatly, eisenhower snatched this game away from them in the 4th quarter. Damien was up by 6 i believe at the half but eisenhower cut that lead within the first 2 mins of the second half. costly turnovers and some few bad shots by damien's guards, and personally believe they didn't go to their big man enough. Also didn't rebound as strong as they should have against a much smaller team. I guess thats how the game goes..congratulations damien on a great run in the playoff

Glendora you have nothing to be ashamed of. You played above yourselves the entire year and just were beat by a more athletic team tonight.

Mater Dei by 10. Etiwanda is pretty hard nosed and has good guard play. However that matched MD's strength tonight as their point guard and Tyler (coulda been a Lancer) Lamb both had good games.

DUmb mistakes with a minute left cost them the game... along with 28 turnovers.... They could have easily had it but Eisenhower, as good as a team they are, squeaked by with a W and possibly the championship

Hey Fred, that school you refer to as "something named California Academy of Math and Science" boasts a point guard named Evan Azzam who is the son of legendary Westchester coach Ed Azzam. They also have a 6-5 senior forward named Ifeyani Ume who had a 29 point, 27 rebound, 9 block game. Thay aren't any pushover team. Hopefully LVL gets by them then you won't have any excuse to miss their next game since no other SGV team will have a game next Thursday.

Clarification for all that didn't get that...the transfers went from Renaissance Academy to Windward...not LVL. LVL has 4-5 seniors who have been playing for the program since their frosh year.

Criticizing someone for a lack of Christian values, for what....reading the gossip on this column and then judging those who you do not even know.

Funny that a school gets the top two players from RA via transfer from a team that went to state finals,Windward becomes the best team in the state in small schools and a top 25 La Times poll by the way they are with there 4 D1 players no hate there but a lot of hate to little school like Lutheran next yr with the complete returning five starters they should be one of the top teams in the SGV. so get a life all the haters and deal with it.

The trojans are a passionate group of good students, players, and coaches. LVL has had talent in the past, but they finally have the coaching to support their talent. Personally I don't know much about high school basketball, but you have all these blogger taking crap about LVL but all their local high school coaches are afraid to play LVL. Until your school is willing to play LVL I personally think you need to keep your negative comments to yourself.

California Math and Science? True Challenge? Really? Granted, it's a step up from the league games against the Indian school, the prison school, and California School for the Deaf-but a challenge? Will they have to answer questions in order for baskets to count? THEN it might be a challenge!
