Girls Soccer: St. Lucy's pulling away
Just like last year, the Miramonte League title is a four-team race that will come down to the final week. The same goes for Bishop Amat in the Del Rey League. It's a situation where you're still in the hunt for league title, but you can also miss the playoffs entirely.

St. Lucy's defender Lynsey Browne is a big reason why the Regents are No. 1

Rob: You did mention many great points and hopefully some of the points drive home to some who can take a more active role in being part of the solution than the problem.
However, in the Bonita case, this isn't about a missed call, an oversight, not being able to handle 22 players on the field. This is about common sense, ethical conduct and virtue. This wasn't a player who went down for a few minutes and will get back up to play the rest of the game. This was a young woman screaming on the field, paramedics coming to the field to pick her up and the ref issuing idle threats to the parents and coaches stating if parents come on the field they would card the coach. That is just egotistical and having some God like complex.
This family and kid deserved better. The family has been active participants (including the Dad is a referee) in the soccer community for years. However, they can't ref their own kids game. I think the #1 rule in any sport is the kids safety and health. Everything and I mean everything should come second. Any opposing view point to this should be removed from any sport that involves any kid 18 and under.
So about the whole ref thing....
Here are the problems:
1. Not enough quality referees to go around and too many games spreading them out. Which also goes into why we have the diagonal system(2 man) that sucks because most of the time one ref doesnt call anything so the other overcompensates. Plus technically the referee closest to the ball is actually watching for offside. Then there is always the ref who sees something and chooses not to mention it to the other referee so not to step on anyone's toes. You don't see most high school teams with two head coaches, the 3 man system is much more efficient but again....not enough bodies to go around to make that practical.
2. CIF Referee Course does have to be renewed annually, but its only 1/3 of the time of the USSF Basic Referee course. When I took the course a few years ago it was a one day deal. Most of the time was spent on learning the system to get assigned games and not on the rules or how to interpret them.
3. Not enough soccer players becoming referees.
4. Not enough people know about the courses and when they come up, and there are only a limited amount of them because of the lack of interest.
5. Also coaches need to take a more active role by sending reports to their area assignors and to CIF about officials making sure to report officials that are poor. Also many high school coaches don't know the differences between FIFA Laws(Club soccer's rules) and the NFHS Rule Book and there are several differences. Sometimes the officials don't know the differences. Especially when you get USSF officials that haven't really looked over their NFHS Rule Book.
6. CIF needs to take over the responsibility of hosting the course from the referee associations and do something similiar to the mandatory Coaches Class that all high school coaches are now required to have completed. This way they can ensure the proper content is being taught.
7. Players, coaches and fans also contribute to the lack of quality officials because many people who would make decent referees are too scared or just don't want to have to deal with all the unwanted attention they would recieve during a match. Everyone needs to remember that these people are human, are probably attempting(not saying they do it successfully at all times)to be unbiased and do the best they can. We cannot expect them to be perfect and often times their perspective of what is happening is very different than what others around can see. Remember...often as parents/coaches/fans we are looking at a small view of the field and aren't moving at the same time. Referees are trying to watch 22 players that are constantly moving and crossing in front of their view. We can't expect them to see everything and I hope that many people that get upset with an official during a match actually have an opporitunity to referee on their own. It is definetly an eye opening experience and a very humbling one at that.
That is so aweful about the Bonita Soccer Player. We know the injured player and I think she is one of the toughest players out there. We'll prayer for her and when she is better make sure she does physical therapy and plyos. It really helps.
For the ref, I hope he develops a conscience and a ref handbook.
I am a ref-
Thank you for the info. My husband has coached/refereed the better part of his adult life, so I know ref's take a lot of complaints and drama from parents. However, there is a line that needs to be drawn, and keeping me from my child in this situation is what I consider WAY over the line! I realize there are rules, but in this instance I feel it was a total control issue. Anyway, thanks again.
Wow. Very sorry to hear about your daughter. I know there are some refs out there that can be jerks. Fifa law states that noone is allowed on the field. But These are still kids and I am sure Most refs would have let the parents on the field. Write your complaint to these people. They assign the games

What IS up with the refs these days. They do not even seem to know the rules. For example, one set of refs would not let a coach sub for a "soft" red this week. Even the parents from the opposing team were yelling that they needed to let the coach sub. And the calls for fouls are so inconsistent that the players become confused as to what even constitutes a foul. Don't even get me started on off-sides. Whoever are the powers at be, please make these refs go through some type of review training each year so that at least they are all on the same page.
Bonita Soccer Mom,
Yes, that was the same ref who called the goal on us that never happened. You remember, the ball that hit the cross bar, bounced down, hit the side upright bar and never crossed the line. He was a dick.
I just wanted to comment on the referee's who officialed the Bonita/ Los Altos girls soccer game last Thursday at Bonita. I am the parent of the injured player who was taken away by ambulance. My husband and I are not over the top parents who run to our kids at every scratch/bruise they receive playing sports. However, when my daughter went down she was screaming in pain in a way I have never heard her before. I knew it was bad. I waited a minute or so and when she continued, I walked down onto the field. My husband followed shortly after. We were then told by this control freak referee that we had to exit the field immediately or our coach would be yellow carded. To make a long story short, my daughter is screaming in pain while even trainers and paramedics can't get her to calm down, all the while she is calling out for us and we are being told to wait on the sidelines. It finally took the AD of our school telling this ref he needed us to be allowed on the field, for the guy to finally consent! WHAT IS THAT ABOUT??? I would love to know who hired this jerk and write a huge complaint letter to them! I would also like to thank the administration at Bonita for handling our situation with respect and professionalism. My daughter's season is over, but it has been great with our new coach and we will continue to support the team till the end!
Actually like Gano. Feel he is a good coach and a good man. Turf stories re Gano heard loud and often anytime LA field condition is discussed. Stadium seating and lighting could use a little touch up, too. But not in this economy. Maybe in our next life.
How about those Saints - 7-0 in league and ranked 7 in the CIF polls this week.
FYI - Ariel Shore is going to Riverside to play Softball but could have easily signed to play soccer. She is one amazing athlete and one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Here are the other four St. Lucy's players continuing their careers at the college level.
Chelsea Broghamer - Sonoma
Denni Jo Berger - Chico
Lynsey Browne -UC-Riverside
Paige Pennington - LMU

Can any other school beat that. Ok D Ranch is good too.
What is it about Greg Gano that brings out the haters and the liars? Let's get this straight people...Greg never turned down any offer from the HLPUSD to install turf. That's just ridiculous!
The district wasted all of the bond money on the La Puente stadium after they had plumbing problems!
Quit making up lies about the man. Why do you hate him so much? Greg's a nice guy.
D-RANCH whooped up on Bonita today and now its Los Altos turn! We got the league title in our sights!!!
Fred, LA Parent is right, go to Los Altos so you can write a story about how we kick thier butts!
Fred!
Gotta get a reporter out to Sierra Vista on Thursday for a huge game for La Puente High Girls Soccer game as they go for 1st place the game is at 5pm
Predicted rain for Thursday may dampen spirits as well as the fields for crucial girls Miramonte soccer games. All but Bonita are natural grass and not in good shape at this time of year. Makes you wonder why Greg Gano supposedly denied the HLPUSD offer to install turf at Los Altos when he had the chance. Too many injuries on turf according to him, it is said.
Seeing as it's NLI signing day tomorrow how about we recognize some of the players that will sign and go on to play soccer in college next year...
Aissa Sanchez - Glendora\Arizona State
Emily Wood - Glendora\APU
Talia Hourany - St Lucys\Occidental ?
Ariel Shore - San Dimas\UC Riverside
Haley Cain - Diamond Ranch\Kansas Wesleyan
And to those that have verbally committed for next year.
Natalie Maxey - South Hills\UC Santa Barbara
Jasmine Roth - Bishop Amat\Arizona State
I am sure there are others; feel free to add to this list. Hopefully I didn't make any mistakes.
Fred!
Gotta get a reporter out to Los Altos on Thursday for a huge game against Diamond Ranch! This would could decide the league title!
