Basball is here...every year a group goes around and tells everyone they are being recruited heavily and apparently no service knows about it. Check into these comments further and you'll see the holes in their stories. Don't wake them up! I hear is bad to wake a sleepwalker for fear they may die from fright!

I had one parent tell me their step son was being recruited by Oregon in two sports, basketball and football....for a Pac 10 school!!!! Yes he had a straight face when he told me. I checked for the glazed over distant gaze and sure enough it was there! Kool aid drinker!

I wonder what excuse he'll come up with when jr. gets cut at Citrus or Chaffey or Rio Hondo.

So "basebal is HERE" take it from someone who knows...this isn't the school to debunk with facts, logic or personal experience. When they say the "powers that be" are holding their kids back...THEY BELIEVE IT!!! My question is ..."why play games?"

If they want to believe in the Tooth Fairy so be it!

It's funnny to read the above posts.....My son is being heavily recruited, the Colleges call our home directly and our son on his cell phone. They don't go to the Coaches any longer they go straight to the players and their family's. Pro Scouts contact the player the same way. Pro Scouts send information through the mail and follow up with a phone call. High School Coaches are cut out completely. Travel ball has changed all of that. Our son went on four official visits this past October he's Coach knew nothing about it! When Colleges are serious they come directly to the player. Just setting the record straight.

Rumor is he is a nice guy, but left Claremont, but who wouldn't?But rumor has it Damien had a chance but missed on a very high profile coach who would have given the immediate credibility with players, the whinny parents, the low informed scouts, college coaches, etc. I hear the head Father and the AD were not really interested in really improving baseball.

Same thing happened this year with Avila and others but then Avila QUIT AGAIN! And he actually got playing time as a freshmen God only knows how. That was another lame Hernandez decision. Quit wrestling too this year. Nice !

Interesting, the takes on the Damien situation, and the exchanges about the quality of coaching in the recent past for the football team.

One point that hasn't been brought up is that on the 2007 League Championship team, there were SEVERAL seniors on that team that didn't play their junior year, but petitioned Morrison to come out for their senior year (8-10 kids at least).

In the few instances I am aware of, it was a definite reflection of the poor coaching on their sophomore team (Bias-HC) that dissuaded some of the lads to forgo their junior seasons. Again, poor coaching and clueless motivational abilities on the coaches part led to this reality.

Unfortunately, no one at the school cared enough to notice.

Don't know Vasquez. Never met Vasquez. Couldn't spot him in a line up. I thought Verdi was the coach. That's how much I know. Only time I ever we t to a Damien baseball game was to see my son's best friend who rarely pitched and last year against Amat. That is 3 games. I admire the Sullivan brothers. One dated Travis' sister and died way too soon so why an I involved this time? My oldest never played football at Damien so not sure you know what you're talking about but did win a Spartan of the Year Award for basketball. My second oldest who you mght be referring to started until the drama started but did win Wrestler of the Year in his first year on the mat. Maybe you think I was responsible for Morrison getting fired but everyone knows it takes more than a blog to fire someone. Just ask CO and Coach Q who won @ Dodger Stadium and silenced his critics. Bloggers don't fire coaches anymore than you peeing standing up makes you a man. Morrison was an aweful coach, a lousy administrator and hired poor coaches after the Sullivans left, in fact the Sullivan freshmen team become the 07 undefeated league champs. So always a big Sullivan fan.
Examine your motives. I don't hear or read any defense for Vasquez or you admonishing anyone for speaking negative about any coach or player unless they pass your litmus test for approval. Saying there is no talent is a cop out. Coaches make players almost without exception. Players make plays and snakes like you crawl on their bellies because you find it difficult to look people in the eye or say anything to their face without crspping yourself.
All my kids have done Damien proud and will continue to do so unlike yours.I'm certain of that!!! I'll be at the game tomorrow and seeing as it's in Baldwin Park we should talk...sure we will.

Nice post, you hit the nail on the head. That is what's going on at Damien. Too many mommies and daddies involved. Corona is the worst, he had a large part in Morrison getting fired, running around getting all the parents riled up, and why?? That takes us right back to square one, his oldest son was not good enough to play. He could not let his son handle his own business, so he got involved and bashed Morrison every chance he got with the parents.

The man was not very intelligent... that is giving him credit. Furthermore, nowhere did I say the kid was not signed based on the scout not being at the game. Chill out buddy! I used that as one of many reasons expressing how caroll is not doing his job and hasn't been for years. Additionally, if a coach does not call back a college coach who has called him expressing interest multiple times what is that telling the college coach? I can make a list of the ways in which vasquez has deliberately chosen to impair the future of kids on the team, ranging from not returning phone calls, emails, or sending questionnaires back. I'm glad to see the great Damien Christian teachings were instilled within him.

It isn't that Damien hasn't had good players. The problem is that their coaches haven't been able to put a good team together that reflects the talent that they had. They've had some assistant coaches from the outside of the school that were pretty good but Carroll ran them off becasue they had club ball affiliations.

obviously you havent been in touch with damien athletics for quite some time. Carroll is not even close to in touch with scouts or colleges, they tried to communicate directly to vasquez. Dont even pretend to know what you are talking bout, i have talked to various pro scouts who have deliberately said that carroll needs to go. One such example was a pro scout who was not informed that a game date was changed, and if he knew the scouts as well as you say he does, i would think he would mention something so simple as a change in the date of a game. Furthermore, i know with 100 percent confidence that a college called vasquez more than once for a player and he chose to not call them back. That's awesome that he wanted to mess with a kid's future

You don't know Gano very well; most of his work is done during the off season at Denny's at about 9:00 p.m. If you don't know what I am talking about you will figure it out real quick. Don't get upset when your son's job is taken by a kid that didn't pass the entrance exam, and is playing for free. O yea and most likely not even attending school, and he drops out at the end of football season. I still see a few of Gano's D1 prospects mowing lawns and cutting down tree's in the Heights. Well he got what he wanted out of them, now we all know where they are going to end up.

ESKY is the right fit !He will get that program where it should be and help out Gano on friday nights those two guys will boost the enrollment

George Barnes would be a much better hire than any young coaches mentioned. He is also a better choice than someone who has been fired for money isues. He is a local guy who has prepared well. I think he went to APU a while back when they were pretty good and played with Coach Reagan from San Dimas and Coach Knott from Bonita...two good coaches.

All of those were coached by Sullivan(s) but he/they (I believe) were hired by Morrison.

The young man that should get the damien job is Chris Beck or George Barnes both great young coaches that are loyal and know their stuff /out with the old in with the new

I've got a good idea who you are and in some ways are a good example of what's been wrong at Damien recently. When you talk to old timers or Parents who went to Catholic schools years ago for the most part they loved their time in high school. Very rarely wll you hear them talk about politics ruining their team, their school or their personal experience. It was all about the school.

So let's cut to the chase. 130 kids! Wow that's enough for two separte teams, with two separate sets of coaches, like Damien used to from what some Alumni have told me. Yet some Dads petition for their sons to "bleed over" into the "Green" team...but only on Saturdays. No need to be thought pf as a Green player mind you...just to help the team...win...right?

Elitism is what's ruining Damien sports. Same thing happened on the Freshmen basjetball team where a player who was 4th string became the 1st team starter and ebvery player and parent on the team wa sleft shaking their head and asking "Where did he come from?"

130 kids! that's 4 teams for most schools. Yet at Damien we have Dad's asking their defensive starters to ask the coach if they can play offense as well...with 130 kids on the team and at least 70 kids on the sidelines of any game??? You need to start on both sides of the ball??

Don't give me the best player plays excuse. This is Damien. Figue that out. If you're not going to "cut" kids then you better hire enough coaches to handle the mess you're making.

Ah the famous Gold , of course, this year was pretty good. You're right they are very talented by Mo got fired and I'm referencing "body of work". Check out the six year record. Congratulations on winning league and especially on your son making the Gold team. You must be very proud. Just remember at Damien, unlike others schools, players play positions to win games rather than positions they will play at varsity. Starting former pop warner players at undersized positions to make coaching easier. That's why you'll see the 5'4" QB and 5'5" guard while 6'1" 210 on players ride the pine.

Better yet check the freshmen record or Damien bs Amat four years ago. Damien won 7-6. So that worked out!

Ritchie Fuentes at 5'3" 165 lbs. was the starting Right Guard while four players over six ft and over 220 stood on the sidelines.

That was STUPID! And maybe that's why this year's team was the worst in 20 years.

Since you're such an insider you shoukld know that the DHS freshmen were League Champs and inspite of having 130 plus kids every year the coaches manage to win not inpite of but because of the practices.

As far as no Div 1 players, again you are so mistaken. Miller went to Nevada and found out he was terribly unprepared and came home after one brutalizing season. Same for Malady and just about any Damien lineman with size has found out. They were poorly coached. Technique is everything. Some programs live off that alone. Wait on the Rabe, Smitty and Turner trains and actually talk with them instead of making blanket comments.

Either way you're entitled to your opinion just try and base it on actually seeing and knowing the particulars involved in the discussion. Go see a Freshmen practice in Football or Basketball and then tell me what you think. Good and Great only matters if you know the difference, same goes for coaches.

I believe that's thee point being made. These kids of the DNA of potentially good athletes and have not developed into recruitable players. Quality coaching does that. A 6'10 senior or 295lb lineman should be making a splash!

I spoke with Sheridan this afternoon and he wont be coming to damien. He was interested in what the school was doing and what direction the school was going with baseball because he cares alot about the damien program that at one time he had built into cif champs in 1997 and division 2 number 1 seed in 1999 also 8 playoff WINS in a 3 yr span. But he informed me today that he will not be coming to damien again as rumored, that he is done with hs coaching, and that he wishes the school luck with their choice (apparently 3 options damien is deciding on.) I truly hope the kids are thought of with this decision and it's not just a "football school" if you know what I mean. Damien needs a BASEBALL coach in the worst way to bring the program back to late 90's status and to keep the kids from transferring out (top 3 freshmen all left program from a yr ago.) I say they either go with an older coach maybe with travel connections or a younger coach looking for his first hs job that may develop into a bright future coach. We'll see.

So what you are also saying is that all the Division 1 football programs missed the boat with these kids. Also, most of these kids come from the 07 team that won a league title!! I guess Morrison was a great coach “that year”!! It’s amazing, he has talent one year and wins the league title and goes deep into the playoffs and the rest of those years he has average talent “at best” and he is horrible.
We will see how great Gano is this upcoming season with what he has. Good luck Spartan parents, you’re gonna need it. Or you can just blame Gano and his coaching staff when they win 2 or 3 games next season.
As far as basketball, you have some tall kids, that’s great!!! But, they can’t play basketball, they are good kids just not basketball players. I mean come on the football team is not good, the basketball team is not good, and the baseball team is not good, but you guys are loaded with talent!!!! Yha right!!!!

I'll belive Damien Has No Talent when you can tell me honestly that Damien has competent coaches at all levels.

Start with that.

Starting D Linemen for Bishop Amat is this former spartan named Alberico. Maybe 5'11" 195 lbs with a bookend D End in Jessie Prieto. Seen them against OLu, DHS, DR, Loyola, DR, ND and LB Poly.

They were never manhandled. They were never out coached, out worked, out hustled or out anything else.

What would their careers looked like being coached at Damien. Better yet ask Shaun Cody and Brigham Harwell if either one of those players would have made it without great high school coaching. Both would have had similar success at Amat but not Damien.

Hate the kids all you want and bag on Mrs. herrera all you want and bag on Taylor all you want and it won't change the truth. Damien nevr had a WR coach in six Morriosn years. No TE coach in six long years and no quality school can claim that. Don't even get me started on the lack of a QB coach while running a passs first offense.

From the stands it looks one ay but from the practice field it's a totally different animal.

Yes I am serious, the level of athletes at Damien is not what it used to be, that is the plain simple truth. However, you parents refuse to see the truth staring you in the face everyday and would rather blame coaches for your childrens lack of talent. The young men at Damien are wonderful young men, that do the best that they can. The real problem with the Damien athletic program are you parents who think just because you pay 6k a year your son should be the next superstar, not gonna happen. Look at Taylor Herrera, terrific track star, below average football player. Mom could not accept that so, she ranted and raved about how bad the coaching was. She could never accept the fact that her son did the best he could but he could just not catch a football. Again not her sons fault, the coaches fault. The problem at Damien is you parents, don't fight your kids battles for them and it's ok if they are not the best athlete in the world, let them be them. Take a look at the football team, Phillip Sainz is a terrific young man who works as hard as he can, however, if he is the starting tailback for your football team then there is a lack of talent. If there were true talent at Damien they would have been loaded at the running back position since Ian Johnson left. Who have they had since he left? No one, kids doing the best they can without the talent.

1.)Have you ever watched any Damien High School sporting event?.........obvioulsly not,anyone with some knowledge of sports...could see that there is as much or even more talent at Damien High School than any other high school in the SGV

Damien is the only school who's excuse for poor coaching is "no talent"...as usual it's blame it on the kids.

Here's one for you. Most San Gabriel Valley Basketball, Football and Baseball players know each other growing up....which kids come out the most developed after high school.

Especially in the Glendora, La Verne, San Dimas and Chino Hills achool who shared athletes. No school blames the lack of success of their programs on the kids.

But then again, none of those school can lay claim to the worst coaching staffs top to bottom that Dunn and Morrison hired. I'm not a baseball guy and actually hate the sport but maybe someone who knows the SGV Basketball Travel Ball scene or the Pop Warner and JAA scene can offer an opinion.

Anyone coach or have kids in those programs who would argue that Damien made their former players or former team mates better in those two sports?

Is Escalera the guy? Havent heard much of anything in the past 2 days except for on here. Good luck damien. You guys are going to need it! I feel they should probably just let the asst take it the rest of this season and bring someone new after this season. Must my 2 cents.

I was at Mauch working out on the field, and I saw some kid in Damien shorts working out with his dad, WTF!! Please don't insult my stadium like that! I'm sure if you can make the drive past LA to Damien, then you can go work out in La Verne or Claremont somewhere. And, since you can afford Damien you can foot the bill at Velocity or SK. No need to to trek your preppy cleat marks on the field you can't win on.

Rich Escalera is the man! I wish LA would hire him. He could be part of the staff on the football team, and revamp the baseball program, which in turn would be good for the football team. "you scratch mine, I scratch yours", which seems to work for Amat. BTW, he could also influence some would-be Amat kids. Then there is the camp.

Figures are salary only and that was for Pasquerella and that was 6 years ago and did not include the car and help with his down payment on his house. Plus his teaching salary. No idea what Mo and Dunn get. Anyone know how that compares to local salaries ?

Martinez would do well, but can he afford to leave an administrative position at Charter Oak - or will Damien open the checkbook again? How about trying to lure Kenny Kendrena back into coaching baseball. While they're at it, if they are really cleaning house, they could also try to bribe Ray Lokar back to coaching and take over for Dunn as teh DHS basketball coach.
If they're willing to pay-having Gano/Lokar/Kendrena just might give them the best trio of major sport coaches in the valley. Is there a better trio now? That'd be a good blog topic.

I heard that former Amat Baseball & Football coach G. Martinez is interested in the position and is friends with Gano. Also beleive that one of Damiens current assistant coaches is a former player of martinez's.

Just curious, is Merrills kid going to Damien to coach quarterbacks with his father and Gano? Doesn't he coach baseball?

It is good that you are editing some of the comments on this blog. Some people have decided that this "their" forum to air dirty laundry about others. I think that you learned that the hard way concerning some of the past comments regarding coaches in the SGV.
It is one thing to write personal opinions about others but when "unsubstantiated" and "false rumors" are posted for nothing but effect then this goes from being an interactive sports blog to "Page Six" sensationalism!! Too many "coaches and players" are getting hosed by "wanna be" gossip columnist!! Keep up the good work maintaining the integrity of this blog and the Trib!!

I appreciate the effort you are making to NOT allow bloggers to make false accusations, defame character and harm hard working players and coaches. Let people have opinions but editing is a must. Keep up the good work...

and those kids that were chewing tobacco were 18 from what ive heard... and besides, who cares... every school has kids that do that especially in baseball program....

in my opinion this team cant afford to wait till the season actually starts. Your gonna have to find someone who goes in there and doesnt really change much. The kids also have to accept him... it could be just a coah for they year or whatever but from what i see.. they cant find someone this quick and expect change in the coaching scheme.

Escalara, are you kidding me. Wanna talk about favortism and sneaky. Dude was ousted not once but twice, Once for taking $$ from what has been said in the past. Bad call IMO.

I would try and get an older coach that is looking to move on and make him an offer asap if I was Damien!

I hear there is a chance Rich Escalera who is currently Coaching at MT SAC. Is being pursued for the position. He would be a great guy to take over the Damien program and get it back to the days of a winning tradition. And also hear he is going to coach football since he is friends with Gano. HOPE ITS TRUE GO SPARTANS !!!

I hear you, I know I've been far from perfect, but I'm trying to improve in the area of what I'm allowing people to comment. I've deleted more comments in the last month than I have the entire time I've been here.

DHS parent, the first part of what you wrote is fine, but I had to delete the rest -- way to many accusations. Again, until Damien decides to return a call or write a press release, this is all speculation. I don't doubt that something is happening, but the school isn't talking.

Vasquez was asked to resign. He refused. He was fired. The baseball parents were notified first by the assistant coach who also resigned to take a Scouting postion with the Phillies. Then the official announcement was made yesterday to the baseball parents because rumors were flying as you say.

"We want to go in a different direction"...

Count on this as one of the catch phrases they'll use to explain.
