Awesome blog post . Interesting concidence... I recently went over this exact subject matter in my lecture last evening . :)

Krissy,

Way to go Girl we are so proud of you! Your team loves and supports you! Go kick some butt at CSUF!!!!!!!!!

I agree with saints fan, Ariel Shore is not only an amazing athlete, but an amazing person. Even if she is going to college on a scholorship for softball, im sure she will still be into soccer. Ariel is a great leader and has been a team captain for 2 years now. Way to go ariel, maybe someone will give at least an ounce of credit to a san dimas player, considering fred doesnt.

Walnut Insider said:

daddys girl,
Think about it for a second, if Krissy's club coach is also CSUF's coach (which he is) does it matter? Obviously, he knows how good she is and has seen her for years now. Why would he use a scholarship on someone that isn't good? He knows what she can do.

And having his sister, Tanya, there makes it better. He knows the family and knows what kind of character they have. To me it's a no brainer for the head coach.

As for the level of competition, all Krissy and the rest of the girls team can do is go out and win. The have won the San Antonio League title for many years striaght now. They schedule hard teams in the preseason. They have always started off slow, this year was worse because they had to move around some people before they found their "fit", for example moving Dana Catone.

Best female athelete in the area - Ariel Shore - and the nicest most selfless person you will ever meet.

Daddy's girl....I doubt your daughter recieved a scholarship.... Because if she did you wouldn't bother hating on other girls SUCCESS!
....Now go drink your Powerade....aka............
HATERADE......Krissy for Player Of The Year!

daddys girl said:

Drink your haterade,
Sorry, we prefer POWERADE in the Sierra League (that's why our league is more competitive). Glad to hear it wasn't dad who kicked in the goal, although the pics/headlines would have been VERY entertaining in the paper. Nothing jealous here, my daughter is taken care of at a Pac-10 school!....who's really the jealous hater?!?

drink your haterade said:

Daddy's Girl,
Oh you jealous little haters....Krissy has a D-1 ride!!!! good for her. Daddy didn't kick the winning goal against S.H......Krissy did :)

RecruitingReality said:

Don't know what college games you have been watching but there are no slow defender's at major D1 college's!!
The majority of players have size (both height and weight), speed as well as skill!
Now she may do okay at other than D1 school, but will still stuggle physically and mentally after 2 year break from it all. And her priorities have probably changed (or at least they should).. she's become a mom.

??? said:

If nadia returns to soccer again in the near future, shell be just fine... Though shes small she has a hell of a touch, and is mighty quick, and a speedster... Small or not im sure she'd blow by those bigger more slower college defenders...

daddys girl said:

Club coach is going to be her head coach, daddy was the team admin of her club team and older sister played for CSUF...sounds like a Rod Blagojevich "deal"!

CSUF said:

Congrats to KS for signing with CSUF. But isn't her club coach the head coach at CSUF. I would have been more impressed if she had gone on to a more competitive school. Demain is no Ali so don't even go there CSUF fans...

Nadia is a very skilled player but the pregancy and her size have hurt her chances of returing to a D1 school to play soccer.

Maybe the babies daddy can play mommy while nadia plays soccer... Like i said she seemed very excited about playing college soccer, I would never imagine her getting pregnant... Especially since she seemed so nice and respectful... Kinda sad if u ask me... Hope everything turns out well for her and the baby, but I can tell she really LOVED soccer and it be ashame if she couldn't continue to play in college...

Yeah right said:

Being off soccer 2 years is BIG...I would "highly doubt" she will be playing for any D1 schools let alone with a scholarship. Besides raising a baby, going to college full time and playing soccer...who are you trying to kid!?!

Walnut High Schools Kristina Slusser signs national letter of intent to a D1 School CSUF congrats Krissy!

??? said:

Pregnant? U sure? I seen her late July in Hawaii... I talked to her and she had every intention in going to UCI or Cal Poly possibly, and playing soccer... Seemed super excited about her future in soccer too...

Walnut Insider said:

Intheknow is correct. I wasn't going to say anything because I thought it was a little personal. She is at Mt. Sac and has every intention of returning to the soccer field next year. As for her scholarship, I have heard that it is still good, but I haven't been able to confirm that yet.

Intheknow said:

From what I understand, Nadia Link got pregnant, and is sitting out a year

??? said:

I remember now, Nadia Link! Did she go anywhere Fred?

??? said:

Fred,

Where did the 2 time player of the year from Walnut go to college? Did she go anywhere? I remember meeting her in Hawaii this past summer, where she was playing regional championships with her club... Very nice girl, must of been very good if she was playing in the regional championships, especially in club since its much harder than high school soccer... What was her name FRED???

Sir Alex,
Unless you have met ALL the soccer players in the valley, doubt your Walnut girl is the MOST unselfish hs player. I am sure she IS unselfish and IS a very nice girl however we have many talented players in valley that are just as if not more deserving. Especially if you compare assist & goal stats. (You actually have another player on your team that is probably more deserving based on assist stats).
I think that consistency (meaning players that every year have made a major impact on their team through leadership, skill level and of course actual stats) during their hs career should be the deciding factor. That's not to say a Freshman, Sophomore or Junior is not deserving of this honor either.
The player of the year last year(same player 2 yrs in a row)was also from walnut and I don't think she even went on to play in college!
Not to pick on Walnut but it's time to look at some of the other schools and recognize players not just for their school winning their league.

The terrific job Coach Gonzo is doing with the Bishop Amat soccer girls is just phenomenal. They are about to win the very difficult Del Ray league in only his 2nd year.

culicagado said:

come on all the good players are playing academy. you cant say that these guys are the best in so. cal!!

Walnut Insider said:

I am going to have to agree with Sir Alex on this one. Krissy is a very unselfish player, that's why her departure will hurt Walnut more than Martin & Ramos did. She has that ability to make the players around her better.

When I asked her at the beginning of the season how they would do, she said she thought they were better this year than last. Last year, she told me that there was a lot of talent, but that they needed to work together to be successful. And obviously, they hit their stride at the right time last season.

BRAVETOWN said:

#10 FROM BALDWIN PARK EDGAR PADILLA. THIS KIDS IS THE REAL DEAL. HE MAKES B.P. GO. UNBELIEVABLE BALL CONTROL, GOOD SPEED, AND JUST A SMART PLAYER. DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BETTER PLAYERS IN THE VALLEY AND SOCAL. HE'S ONLY A JUNIOR AND HAS STARTED ON THE VARSITY SINCE HIS FRESHMAN YEAR.

GO BRAVES !!!!

Sir Alex said:

On the girls side it has to be Krissy Slusser Wanut H.S. she is the most unselfish player I have seen in H.S. most of the time kids are going for the scoring title but she will always look to setup players around her she is a true team player & deserves player of the year!

There is a forward from Bishop Amat. I'm not to sure what his name is but he is a short, quick athlete. He has had a pretty good year and I believe is also in double digit goals.

SoccerFAn said:

These two players are completely different. Mira is low to the ground and has brazilian moves and a left foot that just you don't see anymore. Kevin is a good player but a flopper. Watch him and notice how he always goes down with not contact. Hey you got to give him credit on getting those calls. I think both players are deserving but Mira is flashier and therefore gets more attention.

SoccerCoach said:

Lets not start again with the put down of the kids that play the beautiful game of soccer. It is not the players fault when the coach does not seem to understand the rules of the game. I've had the priviledge of coaching most of the players at Wilson and LA. Both teams have great role players and talent. the styles of Kevin and Mira are very similar. In watching them play, I think Kevin has slight edge over Mira. There is several all around key players at both school that don't get the attention they deserve. Come watch these players in the Spring when they play together on the same team.

??? said:

SH has a couple players also that could probably be selected... Center midfielder, not quite sure of his full name, first name Fernando tall dark kid with great touch and very physical... Also there 2 starting fowards, both excellent players with great speed and touch...

??? said:

Baldwin Park #10 Edgar Padilla... Has 29 goals so far, 13 goals in league with 1 game left... As well as the center midfielder and there sweeper both great players that have a great impact on the BRAVES record...

Sierra Vista #2 Luis Fuentes... Has 29 goals also, but with 16 goals in his league... His league contains more teams also...

Mountain View Omar Rodriguez and Julio Fernandez...

Do you have any names from South Hill? Thanks

Fact said:

Can we leave coaches out of this conversation? This is about the best players in the valley. My vote is for Mira but I am sure Sierra Vista and also Baldwin Park have some talented players. BraveTown, do you want to provide us some names?

??? said:

I'm pretty positive he took out several of his starters, i didnt say all... Just several that would weaken the team a bit, S.H. starting fowards dont end the game either that kinda makes a difference... Obviously that would let Mira roam a bit more freely, but yea they r both ok players... FACT there is atleast 5 other players from other schools that would be named before those 2... Also 1 on Los Altos, center midfielder that transfered from Crespi I'd take him over Mira and Kevin...

Football Parent said:

I know very little about the game but from what I read on this blog I would go with the kid from Wilson. This kevin kid has been involved in two LA forfiets. Meaning he was playing in two games that he was suspended from. According to the LA fans Wilson has no talent except this kid but they still have the best record and are ranked higher which says alot about this kid. Based on the LA and Wilson comments the kid from Wilson gets my vote.

Soccer Fan said:

Los Altos has way better talent but Wilson is well coach and has one of the best players in the valley in Mira...

Does stuff like this really go on ???? said:

Coach Hess;

Can you explain to me how one of your varsity soccer kids is getting a "D" in your AP Algebra II class at the beginning of the year and his final grade is a "A". The real interesting part of this is he still is asking other students for help during class. I guess having your head coach as your algebra teacher must include benefits. I wish it was that easy for my child, but then again he doesn't have a coach and a teacher that cheats. Great lesson you are teaching these kids.

Fact said:

I was at that game and the SH coach did not take his starters out. In fact, he had his starting players in the whole game. Actually, this is what he said: "they started bombing us in the last 20 minutes and they almost beat us". Kevin pretends to get hurt and goes down too much without any contact. Both are great players..but my vote goes to Mira...

??? said:

Well then between the 2 players I think id go with Kevin, if they were the only 2 to choose from... Reason being Mira put in those 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game when S.H. head coach made several subs thinking he had the game won already, taking out most of his starters... Kevin on the other hand had a good game against S.H. that ended in a 1-1 tie... Where Los Altos ended the game dominating S.H. I dont understand why Wilson is ranked so high in C.I.F. when Los Altos has a much better team, and current rankings dont show Los Altos there at all... S.H. dominated the Wilson game, if the starters would've ended the game Mira would've never had the chance to put in those last 2 goals... Mira is an OK player just like Kevin is, but in this case i'd have to give my vote to Kevin...

Fact said:

Mira scored both goals agains SH. Including that beautiful direct kick with 5 minutes left to tie the game.

??? said:

Did Mira play when Wilson played S.H.?

Fact said:

I agree with that vote. THe only difference is that Kevin Martinez takes too many dives and Mira plays with heart and never goes down. He plays hard, teams put 3 or 4 players on him and he still finds a way. He doesn't need to pretend to get hurt everytime someone marks him. Both players are great but Mira playing hurt and leading his team makes him very deserving.

SoccerFan said:

My vote goes to Mira Valdez. It is amazing what Wilson is doing with virtually no athletes at that school. Funny they have 2000 students but out of those, maybe 300 are athletes and they have to be shared. Kevin Martinez from Los Altos is also a great player.
