CIF messed up “Soccer Saturday”

“We tried (to move the game) but CIF had nothing to do with it. We proposed a neutral site and Salesian agreed that we should play at Sierra Vista for all of our fans, but CIF said, ‘no, you’re playing at 11:30 a.m. in Mission Viejo.’ I don’t know why they’re doing that to us, they’ve made exceptions in the past. It just doesn’t seem right.” — Baldwin Park coach Ricardo Mira

Saturday’s CIF Championship games
Division V

Baldwin Park vs. Salesian, 11:30 a.m., at Mission Viejo High School
Division VI
Mountain View vs. Silverado, 11:30 a.m., Warren High School, Downey

The CIF-Southern Section sure didn’t do the San Gabriel Valley any favors with Saturday’s soccer schedule. I’ve already received several emails complaining about this. Why in the world would they send Baldwin Park and Los Angeles Salesian all the way to Mission Viejo instead of nearby Warren High in Downey makes no sense at all. I’ve heard the schools agreed to play closer, even at Sierra Vista, but CIF said, no. It doesn’t make geogrpahic sense to go Mission Viejo, it doesn’t make sense from a money-making point a view, and now fewer fans will likely attend. How great would it have been for the Baldwin Park and Mountain View games to have been back-to-back at Downey far all to witness. I’m upset because now I can’t see both, but that’s life. On the plus side, CIF split up the venues because for the first time, there will be no co-champions. There will be sudden death and penalty kicks if needed to decide champions.
