Colleges: PCC goes for CCCAA title

I just arrived at Selland Arena for the final day of the California Community College Athletic Association state basketball championships.
The Pasadena City College women’s team, which rolled to a 106-93 victory over top-ranked Ventura in Saturday’s semifinals, goes for its first state championship when it faces San Joaquin Delta of Stockton at 3:30 p.m.. The Mustangs are here after ending Mt. San Antonio’s three-year reign with a convincing 70-55 victory over the Mounties.
This is PCC’s third appearance in the championship game, losing to Mt. SAC in 2004 and Cypress in 2005.
I will provide updates throughout the PCC game.

First up is the men’s championship game, featuring Saddleback and Riverside. I can’t but help think that if Citrus, which won the state title last season, was here this weekend, they would be playing today. But if Riverside wins today, the Owls can say their regional loss was to the eventual champion.
2:38 Update: Are seedings overated? It’s beginning to look that way. Riverside, which began the state playoffs seeded No. 7 in the South Region, is less than five minutes away from state title. The Tigers lead Saddleback, the No. 1 seed from the South, 54-46 with 3:51 left.
2:40 Update: Saddleback is making its final push. The lead is down to 58-55 with a minute left…..OH MY! David Norris misses from 15, Saddleback grabs the rebound and Aaron Woods drains a 3-pointer to tie it at 58 with 20.8 seconds to go. RCC’s Daniel Redmon throws the in-bounds pass out of bounds, and now Saddleback has it under the RCC basket with a chance to win. We are going overtime. Kevin Menner got the ball inside the lane with six seconds left, but his shot was blocked as time ran out.
2:53 Update: RCC, getting a putback by Robbie Robinson, is up, 62-58 with 1:57 to play. Let’s see if the Tigers can hold…..And Riverside wins it, 69-60. It’s RCC’s first state men’s basketball title since our good ‘ol buddy Jerry Tarkanian took the Tigers to three in a row in 1964, ’65 and ’66.
3:41 Update: PCC and Delta just took the court, and we are about 15 minutes away from the opening tap.
4:00 Update: And we are about to tip off. The tap goes to Delta. But Easter Faafiti gets the first points, a layup and a PCC 2-0 lead.
4:04 Update: It doesn’t take long, Allegra Kohley gets a putback, which is followed by a 3-point bomb by Melia Basavand and another layup by Kohley and the Lancers lead 9-0 with 17:33 to play.
4:11 Update: Delta, behind some shots from Jessica De La Cruz, gets back into it, and trails just 16-10 with 13:14 left.
4:17 Update: Cherisa Sellers and Kohley get layups and PCC pushes the advantage back up to 20-10, forcing a time out with 10:23 left.
4:24 Update: Delta gets within four, but Kinyada Johnson nails a 14 footer and then comes back with a 3-pointer, and its 29-19 with 6:14 to play.
4:36 Update: De La Cruz is single-handedly keeping Delta in it. She geta a fast-break layup and follows it with a 3-pointer at 2:40 to keep the Mustangs with six at 36-30. But PCC, behind a Faafiti layup and a Johnson 3-pointer pushes it back to nine at 41-32. But another 3 -pointer by De La Cruz, and a layup Lanaija Ernest makes its 43-37 PCC at the half.
4:43 Update And here our your half-time leaders – PCC: Johnson 16 points; Faafiti 10; Kohley 8. Delta: De La Cruz 23 points…The next highest for Delta is Ernest with 4 points.
4:55 Update: Natalie Montes gets a putback and Ernest follows with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Delta pulls within 3 points at 45-42 with 17:21 to play.
4:59 Update: Montes gets a 6-foot turnaround to put Delta within two at 45-44 with 16:08 to play. Then the Mustangs have a chance at the lead, but an ill-advised pass inside results in a turnover, which in turn is followed by a Faafiti putback for a 47-44 lead for PCC.
5:05 Update: Melissa Fudge gets a 3-point play, then Johnson hits a jumper from 12 before Smith follows with a steal and layup to get it back to 10 points at 54-44 with 13:28 left. But Delta won’t go away. Keisha Leggs gets a layup and Sylvonya Moore follows with 5-footer and its back down to six at 54-48 with 12:36 left.
5:14 Update: Delta pulls within 1 following fast-break layups by Earnest and Vintea Georges. But PCC counters and layup and a foul from Faafiti. She missed the free throw, but Kohley follows with a putback and converts the 3-point play for a 59-53 lead with 9:02 left. Johnson then gets a driving layup before Fudge hits from 14 and its 64-55 with 7:12 to go.
5:28 Update: Delta tries to make another push, getting hoops from Montes and Leggs and two free throws from Ernest to pull within 64-61. But Johnson hits one of two foul shots and Basavand fires from 3….it’s good, and the lead is 68-61 with 2:51 left.
5:32 Update:It’s looking good for the Lancers. Delta gets two fastbreaks, but Ernest is called for an offensive foul with 2:02 to play, then after a steal Leggs misses inside and Kohley gets the key rebound. Faafiti then gets a key putback to make it 70-61 with 1:03 left.
5:40 Update:: And the Pasadena City College Lancers are your CCCAA state champs, 74-64.
