Baseball: Baldwin Park mercies Covina, 10-0

Baldwin Park scored eight unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped by a grand slam by Gerardo Arias to give the Braves a 10-0 victory in their Valle Vista league opener against Covina to go to 4-1. Braves pitcher Andy Salcido allowed just two hits and had five strikeouts.

“It was kind of a statement game. We want to let other teams know that we’re not just going to roll over. Obviously when we get to San Dimas, Northview, they’re very good, don’t get me wrong. But we’re coming to compete and we want to win, there’s no doubt about it.” Baldwin Park coach Jake Barendregt on his teams 4-1 start.

“It’s just frustrating. I know it’s my job not to be frustrated, it just is. I told myself before the season we would go through this (learning curve) because we’re so young. Everybody wants to win and put out a good product. But it’s tough when you make mistakes that come back and bite you. But that’s part of learning.”— Covina coach Pete Loaiza on losing and giving up eight unearned runs in the fourth inning.
