Softball: Los Altos back on top

Let’s face it, the San Dimas tournament organizers messed it up by having the two best teams, Etiwanda and Los Altos, play in the first game. Although the Conqs lost, they shutout everyone else in their next three games and deserve to be No. 1 again. Glendorar hasn’t fired on all cylinders yet, and Bonita is the best early story of the year. Other surprises have been the starts for West Covina, South Hills and Walnut. Maybe the San Antonio will be interesting. Disappointments so far include South El Monte, Charter Oak and even San Dimas, but the season is long.

Games to watch this week:
Today: St. Lucy’s at San Dimas, 3:15 p.m., doubleheader; Walnut at Diamond Bar, 3:15 p.m.
Thursday: Los Altos at Bonita, 3:15 p.m.
Friday: West Covina at Walnut, 3:15 p.m.

Girls Softball top ten
1. Los Altos (3-1) – With respect to Glendora, the Conqs were the most impressive team in the San Dimas tournament. After losing to eventual champion Etiwanda 2-0 in the first game, they shutout three straight opponents, including San Dimas 5-0 in the consolation final.
2. Glendora (5-2) – A good start for the Tartans, not a great start. Big win over Bonita without Waldusky. It seems to me they’ve still got a CIF championship game hangover. When they start swinging the bats, they will be fine.
3. Bonita (7-1) — Without a doubt the most improved and most surprising team in the area. Los Altos, Charter Oak, Diamond Ranch, get ready for the ‘Cats.
4. Bishop Amat (2-2) – Went .500 in the tough Brea tournament, losses to Redlands, La Habra, wins over Villa Park and La Serna. My guess is they will win the Arroyo tournament this week.
5. San Dimas (2-2) — The Saints off to another notoriously slow start. But in all fairness, their only losses are to Bonita and Los Altos. I’m going to predict right now they go undefeated in the Valle Vista.
6. St. Lucy’s (4-4) — After a slow start, the Regents bounced back in the Brea Olinda tournament to beat Capistrano Valley, 2-0, in a consolation final.
7. Charter Oak (3-3) — The problem last year continues. They have scored 31 runs, but allowed 27. That won’t get it done with any kind of consistency in softball.
8. Northview (3-3) — After getting to the semfinals and facing some real heavyweights in the San Dimas tournament, Vikes got beat 14-0 and 7-4 by Etiwanda and Bonita respectively.
9. Azusa (4-1) — Off to a good start against opponents they should beat, however their only loss was a 10-2 pounding against Claremont.
10. Sierra Vista (2-0) – Don’t know if they have played more games, was one win was against a decent Colony squad, 9-0.
Others to watch: South Hills (3-1), West Covina (3-1), Walnut (2-1), South El Monte (2-3), Diamond Bar hasn’t updated any games, so don’t know.
