Baseball: Bonita pulling away from the pack
At this point it would take a big stumble for the Bearcats to drop from the top spot. Not only has Jiovanni Mier been on fire, but pitcher Nico Calderaro is putting together another terrific season. As long as they keep playing with something to prove, they will prove their worth when it matters. Bishop Amat climbs back to No. 2 with a four-game win streak, but lets see how they do this afternoon against St. Paul. San Dimas makes the biggest leap to No. 3 after knocking off mentally fragile Northview, who at No. 4 is their lowest ranking in two years. Damien, Diamond Bar and Glendora are bunched together in the middle of the pack, and the more I look at the list, the more I believe the parity is closer than ever with Charter Oak at No. 10.

Big games this week:
Today
St. Paul at Bishop Amat, 3:15 p.m.
Diamond Bar at Damien, 3:15 p.m.
Wednesday
West Covina at Nogales, 3:15 p.m.
Azusa at La Puente, 3:15 p.m.
Thursday
Baldwin Park at San Dimas, 3:15 p.m.
Friday
South El Monte at Gabrielino, 3:15 p.m.
Bishop Amat at La Salle, 3:15 p.m.
South Hills at West Covina, 3:15 p.m.
Baseball top ten rankings
1. Bonita (7-1) - Not world-beaters but developing that repuation with a No. 3 ranking in the Times. Sure they had to rally to beat Charter Oak, but that's what driven senior-laden teams do, they find a ways to win.
2. Bishop Amat (6-3) - Here they come, after a 2-2 start they've won four straight. Once they stop giving up all the unearned runs, the Lancers will be fine. They still have seasoned pitching and are batting well enough to win games.
3. San Dimas (6-2) - Yes, the Saints moved to 3-0 in the Valle Vista with last week's 9-6 win over Northview. When you consider their only losses have come against Bonita and Chino Hills, the Saints deserve to move up the board. They have won three straight and five of six.
4. Northview (6-2) - The Vikings are finding out that you can't lose seniors like Marc Andrade, Aaron Elias and Robert Williams, and pick up where you left off. They have the tools, but the swagger is missing. Not good with the National Classic on deck.
5. Diamond Bar (6-3) - One of the hottest teams at the moment, the Brahmas are the only 3-0 team in the Sierra after beating Glendora, Ayala and Chino.
6. Damien (5-2) - They beat Ayala, lose to Glendora, which is no surprise considering the Sierra League grind. But this is true, the Spartans are playing well and figure to be fighting for a league title at the end.
7. Glendora (6-3) - The Tartans rebound from a league opening loss to Diamond Bar with big wins over Damien and Chino Hills to move to 2-1 in league. If they can take care of Chino and Ayala next, they will be sitting pretty.
8. Nogales (10-3) - The 8-7 loss to Walnut might eventually hurt their chances of knocking off seven-time champion South Hills, but no arguing how much they've improved under legendary coach John Romano.
9. South Hills (5-4) - Forget their record, they've won four of five are and are improving by the week. Whatever off-field distractions they had early in the season are becoming a distant memory.
10. Charter Oak (7-5) - Had won five straight before loss to Bonita and split with Claremont on Saturday. They feel like one of those teams who can beat anyone, but certainly, they're no lock to beat anyone either.

AZUSA good job today! 16-8.
Coach Rigney keep it going!
Matt,
"If you're here, and I'm here, doesn't that make it OUR time?" (Spicoli to Mr. Hand)
Oh, sorry Matt. You're probably not old enough to remember that!
get pizza and beer on your own time you old men.
That was a lecture? Sorry you feel that way. I'll treat because I'm a man of my word. You can drink and eat all the pizza you want. It's too bad you took it that way. Name the time and place...besides I've got a few questions I might want to ask you myself. One other thing you might want to think about, I rarely off base. Like most bloggers, over time, I've proven to be right. Look back and check.
I like Petrllo's but it's your call. Besides I like to go see people where they are comfortable. You know the alligator and the bear analogy I often use...there is one aside to that...depends on the bear and the alligator.
My point is as always Randy...if you have a point make it...if you have an agenda make it...if you're just a sh7t talker...I can't respect that. Only you know what you are.
Explain it to me...I like to hear a good yarn.
Your Pizza & Beer Man,
Frank
* by the way my schedule is wide open. I'll take my medication and won't get teh blog shakes for at least 4 hours....is that enough time?
Franky, Franky, Franky,....take your sermon, and shove it up your but.......how dare you, with your 50 different poser names YOU hide under, come on here lecturing me......we're kool, me and you, but don't try to shake your little stick at me....I haven't said anything crazy in awhile, although you being an obessive compulsive blogger might have turned and twisted something I said around....if you got so upset earlier by some baseball rants i threw in here you shoulda said something earlier....email Fred, get my address from him, and we can talk anytime, and like i said earlier, i thought we were cool, besides---you still owe me pizza and beer......
I used to coach T-ball. I know I know I know I know...anyway...like I was saying I used to coach T-ball and then whatever goes after that. I know clueless as I was...but I love my kids and unfortunately no one else volunteered. So I was a coach.
My brother in law used to coach at Valeydale Park and since I always wanted my kids to see both sides of the street we trekked out to lovely Valleydale in Azusa.
Anyway after a few memorable "incidents" with Little League "dynamics" we left the sport to stronger minds and bodies although my brother in law continued to coach with his brother and eventually coached some of the current Northview players. The Beltrans are pretty special coaches who coach for the love of the game. If any of thsoe NV players read this Coach Richard is so prove of ypu guys!
Anyway, sorry long winded as usual...I'm at the Ayala and Damien freshmen baseball game and as luck would have it I'm standing next to two pretty successful baseball coaches who have kids on each team.
As I stood there listening and laughing and carrying on I heard them talk about the strenghts and weaknesses and great potential of several players, it was fascinating actually. Besides I love to hear any coach that's passionate about their sport.
During the game a funnier thing happened. One coach's son was picked off at first! Wow the Dad handled it really well. I loved teasing him even though I'd never meet him before...he took it well. The other coach/dad just tried to look for a rational for the "mistake", call it a "professional courtesy"...either way I was laughing inside. We all laughed and the coach teased his son when he took the field and the son smiled and it was cool seeing the dad and the son exchange glances.
Baseball is a cruel game with a wicked sense of humor....the "very"next inning the "other" coach's son gets run down after missing a sign or whatever happened going to third....it was incredible!!!! The coach/dad yells.."WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!"...I think he thought he was saying it to himelf (inside his head) but it came out..LOUD! That was something..hey I've done it...you never really stop coaching I guess.
Now both Dad's are red as tomatoes and I say..."Jesus WHO COACHED THOSE KIDS BEFORE HIGH SCHOOL!!!"...we all laughed. Ironically both player wore the same number! LOL Like I said "baseball is a cruel game with a wicked sense of humor!"
Finally as we settled witnessed an exact father/son replay with the second coach and son I said..."You know guys...it's really NOT their fault...I "heard" their previous coaches SUCKED!!!"
We were roaring!!!!
That's what sports is suppose to be about. That's why it's called a "game" and the knuckleheads call it a "war". Ayala and Damien. like Glendora and Charter Oak, and DB and Dr and many many other SGV schools are made up of friends and former team mates and classmates who really do get along. Teams on both sides have former dad/coaches who wish them nothing but the best. We've all been there.
Let's be honest Dads...it's still pretty cool when a player from another school takes the time to walk over before a game to say..."Hi Coach!" and shake your hand...I know I still get chills.
Hopefully baseball bloggers, who probably have the most school meltings going on, would set an example to the blog by acknowledging the mutual respect that can be expressed and shared. It never ever stops being a "game" unless we lose our minds.
And (sorry literay purits) "we all been there as well"
Here's my personal shout out to Baseball "people"...you're incredible!!!!! And I wouldn't want it any other way...have fun...see you at the game!!!
Looks like our team is starting to gel. It took a little time but they now are getting it done . Great job LANCERS. How about that little ball all the haters were crying about. It got us the win yesterday. Sure we would prefer rallies and big hits but sometimes execution of the little things gets you those wins in close tough games. Great job by Paez on the mound .
It's just a game,
Your right! Let's keep these blogs positive. Good luck to Damien.
Just being honest,
You're right, it is the truth. But, sometimes the truth hurts. Errors hurt most of the time but they happen. Bad games happen. It's just better when it does not seem like the "fans" (parents?) are putting a spotlight on them. Having been there myself I know those kids (let's remember they are STILL kids) feel bad enough about what happened. There's no need for anyone to keep bringing it up. Don't be fooled into thinking they don't read these blogs (I'm sure some even contribute to them). When they're playing in the pros or D-1 college they'll have to answer to the fans/media, let's give them at least until then to have to deal with it.
Remember, it's just a game.... one game.
Standing Ovation, Show some class. May the good Lord bless you and keep you.
It's just a game,
Nobody is taking anything away from Whitehouse. Diamond Bar's defense took a hit. When bloggers are saying 8 runs were scored off the starting pitcher just be clear errors hurt Diamond Bar that's all I'm saying. If Diamond bar doesn't pull it together in the field its going to be a very long season that's all. Diamond Bar & Damien will meet up again two more times we'll see how it goes. Stating the facts about many errors by Diamond Bar isn't bashing the team it's the truth, errors were a big factor in this game.
Frank C,
Very well said. I have been debating whether to respond to the outrageuos claims made by the many (or maybe just one) D.B. fans just to rub it in. I wanted to say something "snarky" to the large person in purple that was screamimg after every Damien strike-out early in the game yesterday, but just like the large purple people eater after her team fell apart, I will stay quiet because you said what many people here on this blog wanted to. I don't think there was anyone other than a D.B. parent who was cheering for them to win. The antics and comments here on this blog have created an animosity toward DB that you will have a hard time recovering from. It's too bad because it's about the players not you. Good luck to you, and congratulations to the Damien Spartans on a very convincing victory.
Fungo
Facts,
Since we're quoting the paper...
"When we want to play, we can play," Diamond Bar coach Eric Shibley said. "That's kind of our (modus operandi). We're hot and cold."
That's called taking the "high road". Not slamming the team for having a bad game. I guess what you hear when reading that is they just didn't want to play yesterday?
I see you ignored this part too...
"Diamond Bar native Matt Whitehouse pitched a gem for Damien (7-3, 3-1) and allowed two runs on three hits in five innings. The senior left-hander settled down after walking the first two batters and allowing two run-scoring singles in the first inning."
The "facts" are it was a "L" for DB and a "W" for Damien. Move on, start thinking about Chino Hills tomorrow.
You all get that these threads are all very boring unless it has somehting to do with Amat, RIGHT!!!
Amat must be hated by all, just check the thread count......JEALOUSY!!!!!!
You have to be kidding me that Amat is #2. This team gets clubbed around in the Glendora Tournament and loses to a crappy Diamond Ranch team and should've lost to Charter Oak too. How do they answer those two games, they get beat by Ayala and than blasted 11-0 by Chatsworth. A win over Milikan and a way overrated St. Paul team gets them back in Fred's back pocket? Come on Fred, hits are important, but this is ridiculous.
A three-base error then allowed two more Damien runners to score.
Following a costly Diamond Bar error, Damien center fielder Mark Garcia, who was 2-for-3, increased the lead to 8-2 with a score
**It's better to let the newspaper report the errors!**
“fonzie cool board rankings”.
1. Bonita
2. all the rest, northview, amat, san dimas, Damien, diamond bar, Glendora, nogales, charter oak, anyone can beat anyone on any given day.
Thank the lord that scouts and colleges do not read these blogs.
Amat still takes Damien on the Diamond in a real game (not a two game scrimmage). Just too much talent at Amat. One man's opinion.
Randy...Randy...Randy....once again you have to eat your words. You come on here and argue on behalf of a team by putting other schools down. Not just the players mind you, but the whole school, staffs, league and titles and anything else you can think of. Then you have a hard one for DR that borders on "left at the altar" hate. Get over it! You're not arguing for fairness or adequate coaching or back door deals where you see kids being hurt or treated unfairly...no you just go stupid on people. When I talked to you at the DR/DHS Freshmen game I thought ..."hey there's a Salesian connection" based on your family ties to the Medina's. I played football and soccer with Eddie actually. He wasn't very good as a football player or soccer player for that matter but he had genuine love for our school and his team mates. He was a classy guy who was like a "Rudy" before there was a Rudy. Coach Rollinson would close his eyes every time we practiced kickoffs. Eddie was a true Kamikazee! Reckless, wild and absolutely fearless....I think he had more head injuries than tackles. No kidding!
This year Salesian came on this blog and wished Baldwin Park well. "We" suffered 4/5 injuries to starters in that game but never said a bad word about anything from the Mustangs. When Salesian won vs BP "our" HC came on here and congratulated the Baldwin Park community and assured them they would soon be Champions as well someday soon. Class act that coach and that school for that matter. I went to the State playoff games and Salesian was nothing but class. Allot has been written about my dislike of some Damien coaches but never have I ever, ever, never said anything about a school or opponent anywhere near what you think is fun and games. STFU. Your stupidness goes all the way back to picking on Blue Orca...just for kicks. Never understood that. I'm not saying you're a punk because you risk your life everyday to help people so kudos to you...much respect and thanks for the 911 direct line number but seriously dude. Let all bygones be bygones...let it go. I did. And I feel so much better and I'll tell you why.
My son is at USC and in the year and a half he's been there 3 students have died ( OD, Stabbing, and the recent hit and run that killed one and injured another) ...my son uses that cross walk everyday. Several students have attempted suicide for whatever personal reasons. Yesterday an old lady almost ran me over with her car as I was using a cross walk, luckily I always look inside. before I step off ..old football habit...and I dodged her in time to have her almost kill my wife! In her haste to get away after my incident she put my wife on her hood and almost trampled her to death. God gave us both another chance.
Randy,. today is a new day. Talking smack is whatever but talking s(hit* is just stupid and I think you're better than that. Hope you take this the right way.
Your friend
Frank Corona
Baseball Fan, and all you other DBar commenters,
Just remember what you're saying to the team and about some of your own players when you say things like "many many errors" and "defense gets real shaky". Be "TEAM" players yourselves. Don't place blame on others, take responsibility as a TEAM..... no excuses.
What's the biggest upset of the day is having Amat ranked #2
Lauagble givin the fact of their weak league and making no impact when playing SGV teams.
But I guess Fred needs to try and get more hits..
The Sierra League is really a one horse race. It's Damiens to lose. It's like I said, it's about the pitching. Look at points against and points for. The Gledora game was a fluke that won't happen again. Amrhien had his worst game of his young career vs Glendora, everyone has a bad one. The Yucaipa loss was to the #2 team in Div II. Damien will be good for a few years. They are young and have most of there pitching staff back next year. Amrhien (11th), Gonzales(10th), Martin(11th), Guillen (11th), plus they have bats coming back Lewis(11th),Oatman(11th) and Ortega (11th). Without a doubt, the Sierra league is the toughest league in the valley. Damien will have to be at the top of its game every Tues. & Thurs to win it, but they are truly capable of doing so. Congrats to the boys, Leyva and Gross. You have represented Sparta well. Stay healthy and God Bless.
GO Damien!
P.S. Patrick - Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Peace brother.
There's nothing wrong with "fire in the belly". Just remember there's ALWAYS someone watching.
Sierra League
Henley, GET A PITCHING COACH! AND NOT STEVIE!
Hey Urban, I don't see anything wrong with fire in the belly!
It's just a game,
Urban is talented that's for sure, DBAR's defense gets really shaky when Urban leaves shortstop he's a very intense player, he needs to play his game and roll with the punches. DBAR is young they will bounce back.
Let's not start making excuses now, remember baseball is a TEAM sport. Games and League Championships are won and lost as a TEAM. It's also a sport of failure. It's not that you make mistakes (errors) and lose a few games, it's how you come back after those losses, what you learn from the losses and how you handle yourself during those losses. Urban seems like a talented kid. The advice I'd give him would be to hold his head up and leave the field with class. Those "scouts" want to see character as well as talent. This should be a very exciting chase for the Sierra League title. Good luck to all the teams.
Mathew,
You really should use Dial soap it kills the butt hole order :) and your Shi* breath too :)
Matt T,
Grow up punk!
excuses are like buttholes everyone has one and they all stink like poo
Come on boys there were 2 runs scored off Urban the rest were errors! Please after that they brought in the 5 & 6 string pitchers Congrats Damien you got the win let's see how you do next time! God bless!
DHS,
Jake Urban pitched a great game lots of scouts too. The scouts see all the errors! many many errors! you cant blame the pitcher for that! btw they got 2 runs off Urban all the rest were unearned! When Urban is on the mound Shortstop is wide open for errors. The outfield is young with no experience, like he scouts were saying these kids can't read a ball off the bat.
Chino 3
Glendora 0
Plutko goes 5 innings and gets the loss.
Tartans only get 4 hits in the game.
Patrick,
What does Catholicism and being put in an "All Catholic" league have to do with the score of the game today? I don't recall many Damien fans boasting about how good we are, at least not nearly as many as the DB fans who want to argue about how good they are because they lost to a good team like El Toro. How about we just let the teams play and we'll see who is the best at the end of the season. I'm pretty sure that's why we play the games! What exactly is it we should be ashamed of? Winning the game by 13?
Furthermore, i suppose you and the funky bunch think you sewed up the crown already as usual. Well i will tell you this....Since you guys boast so much about how good you guys are, why the hell are you folks so pissy about getting put in a "ALL" Catholic league???...and dont give me the damn traveling too far excuse either, there are many public school that have to travel even further than you do now!
Some Catholic school you guys represent..LMAO!!
ALl you , parents and students alike should be ashamed in the name of Catholicism....
DHS, why dont you try repenting ...Sinner!!
patrick get your facts straight Jake Urban started the game and got rocked for like 8 runs. So get your facts straight before you open your big mouth
Damien scored 8 runs off Urban.
Yes Damien is winning, but look who Shipley is pitching!! Its not Urban or Matthews, calm down Damien fans, calm down!!
Damien is destroying Diamond Bar 16-3 now.. amazing how well Damien can play.
On a side note I want to congratulate Chase Sipple from Damien, the All- Area offensive Lineman. My son came home today and told me he was accepted at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, and Stanford today for academics. Its nice to see good athletes excelling in the classroom. Congrats kid
dbar 3 Damien 16
sorry dbar now u can calm down. damien a good squad
dbar wow
Bishop Amat 1 St. Paul 0
I haven't seen them play this year but Chatsworth has been a helluva team and program over the years, one that can rival some of the top SS schools. Remember guys, LAUSD extends out to the SFValley where you have other schools like Notre Dame and Crespi that are tearing it up. There is a lot of baseball talent out there.
I know this a baseball thread, but could not help throwing in my two cents, specially when it comes to city schools and all the that is being said, I hope you were only refearing to baseball as in Basketball CIF school, including big bad Mater Dei, can't compare... Fairfax (where I attended) Westchester, Taft, Cleaveland, Chatsworth, up and coming Manual Arts, and good ole Chrenshaw....
just had to defend my city schools...
I always go by pitching and than hitting to rank a team. When Chatsworths pitching is average compared to El Toro's beast's on the mound it isn't hard to see the difference in the teams. I agree with mountain lion & house cat comment. Just my take on all this, it means nothing.
coaches poll/updated last week:
http://www.baseballresource.com/forums/read.php?f=1&t=19173&t_page=1
Don,
Yes! House cats I have seen both teams play. Can't compare at all! I have seen two games by Chatworth and three by El Toro.
Thompson and Wirsch are great and this may be ET's year but I think that anyone would agree that a top 25 ranking of the combined Southern-City sections of the CIF is going to be WAAAAAYYY subjective and open to a whole world of disagreements.
The rankings, anyone's rankings, are fun to talk about, but they mean nothing. That's why they make them play the games.
BTW, Chatsworth house cats? I think not.
Yeah Fred,
It is too bad you can't get away from the "Amat" connection. They win a couple of games in a lower division against lower division schools and you still give them cred?? Must be the "napolean" factor at Amat. The little man is a basketcase on the field and givin' his team props only gives him cause to continue his antics!!
A 4 hr 15 min 8 inning game in HS is ridiculous!! He should have gotten "tossed" but obviously the umps were intimidated. Look beyond Freddy, and see what the rest see. Bonita is legit but the Sierra is day to day the toughest league to play in around the valley and you still hang with DIII, IV & V schools.
Oh well, it is only one man's opinion!!
Listen up,
Everyone knows a "City Section" school is not at the same caliber of play as "Southern Section" stop splitting hairs and realize the "Huge" difference. Cut bait and run.
City Section and Southern section is night and day. "Just saying" There again their the best among "City" schools. Trust me El Toro would spit them between their teeth.
How about them Brahmas!
Go DBHS!
Brahma Baseaball!
Work hard boys.
listen up- Yes, Chatsworth is in the C.I.F. (which stands for California Interscholastic Federation) and the are in the CITY SECTION not the Sothern Section - but C.I.F. nonetheless. As Don says - the Times has them at #2 in the entire region (El Toro is at #6)
Hey Don,
Nope can't get that City school ranking past me. What it does is water down the whole process. And it makes people like "Just saying" think Chatsworth is a stronger team than El Toro which is just not true at all. Comparing El Toro to Chatsworth is like comparing a mountain lion to a house cat.
P.S. : Can't get anything by you guys, can I? Yep, the Los Angeles Times has included two City Section schools in this week's rankings, Chatsworth at # 2 and Cleveland at # 23.
Inexplicably, they also manage to show 10 schools from the OC and some from Ventura County too. Go figure.
Not that anyone's rankings matter of course.
Just saying,
Amat got clubbed by Chatsworth who is way tougher than any "competition" on DB's schedule.
Can you say El Toro!
P.S. Isn't Chatsworth a city school? they don't even play in C.I.F.
Not that it matters, but, The LA Times rankings this week keeps Bonita at # 3 behind Mater Dei and Chatsworth. The Vikes oozed down to 21 from last weeks # 17.
They are the sole D3 and D4 teams on the Time's list.
Not that it counts for anything, I'm just sayin'.
Same record. Amat beat Millikan who shut out LB Wilson. Aren't they DB's "signature win"? Amat got clubbed by Chatsworth who is way tougher than any "competition" on DB's schedule. Really anyone on the top ten can probably beat each other on any given day depending on the matchups - so the order could change daily
Fred,
Diamond Bar #5 Really? They have the same record as Amat, and Amat hasn't played near the competition. They lost to Diamond Ranch come on Freddy! Diamond Bar should be in the #2 spot no doubt about it. Diamond Bar's pitching and hitting has put them in a possible win every game. Fred you have never given Diamond Bar the respect they deserve. Shame on you Fred!
