Baseball top ten poll: Vikings roll again

| | Comments (70) |

GLENDORA UPDATE: Northview followed its 4-3 win over Bonita with a 13-2 win over Murrieta Valley on Tuesday. Now all they probably need is a win over Claremont on Thursday to reach Saturday's championship. RJ Arnold hit his second homer and had three RBI's for Northview. Eddie Pedroza went five innings to get the win. Bonita goes to 1-1 after 10--6 win over Crescenta Valley.

TOP-TEN POLL: Big changes after the season preview. Northview and Bishop Amat will keep the top two sports, despite Bishop Amat's big loss on Monday against Diamond Ranch. Damien and Glendora move up the list along with Diamond Ranch and Diamond Bar. South Hills, starting 1-3, drops from No. 3 to No. 8., and Charter Oak and Azusa drop out of the top ten. Nogales is the biggest surprise addition, opening the season with back-to-back shutouts.

Glendora baseball off to a quick 2-0 start in own tournament, facing 2-0 Diamond Ranch on Thursday with the winner likely playing in Saturday's championship.

Glendora Tournament
Tuesday's results

Northview 13, Murrieta Valley 2
Ayala 6, Claremont 5
Bonita 10, Crescenta Valley 6
Wednesday's games
Alta Loma vs Dysart 3:30 Henderson
Bishop Amat vs Charter Oak 3:15 Glendora H.S.
Diamond Ranch vs Glendora 7:00 Henderson
Thursday's games
Claremont vs Northview 3:30 Henderson
Ayala vs Crescenta Valley 7:00 Henderson
Murrieta Valley vs Bonita 7:00 Azusa Pacific Univ.

Baseball Top Ten Poll
1. Northview (1-0) - Huge opening 4-3 win over No. 3 Bonita. Great pitching by both, but again, the Vikes find ways to pull it out. Facing Murrieta Valley tonight will be an even tougher test.
2. Bishop Amat (1-1) - Okay, so the Lancers lose 12-11 marathon in eight innings against Diamond Ranch. I'm sorry, but this is a small chink in the armor. The problems were supposed to be hitting though, not pitching.
3. Damien (2-0) -- A pair of one-run wins over Palm Springs and Miller to open the Chino tournament. They get Kaiser tomorrow.
4. Glendora (2-0) -- Sort of a surprise, beating two solid teams. The winner of Glendora-Diamond Ranch on Thursday will likely play for the Glendora tourney title on Saturday.
5. Diamond Ranch (2-0) -- They may not have the pitching, but if they keep out-slugging teams like Bishop Amat, they will be fine.
6. Diamond Bar (2-0) -- The biggest surprise so far, following a 12-7 win over Long Beach Wilson with a 3-1 win over Villa Park to start 2-0 in the Loara tournament.
7. Bonita (0-1) -- Played No. 1 Northview tough, second round robin against Crescenta Valley tonight.
8. South Hills (1-3) -- First Shirley declared ineligible, then Huskies lose first three games (Don Lugo, swept by Ayala) before finally beating Arroyo, 11-0. Is this a sign of things to come?
9. San Dimas (1-1) -- 14-2 win over Colony, then a 13-2 loss to Chino Hills. Hmm, maybe we'll know more after the Don Lugo tournament.
10. Nogales (2-0) - How interesting, the open witha pair of wins in the Costa Mesa tournament over Warren and Orange, both shutouts.
Others of note: Charter Oak (1-1), Azusa (0-0)

stop the obsession with me pal. your lancers just got pounded again 11-0!!! just keep your mouth shut your sounding more and more ridiculous. if i were you id go in a cave and hide the way ur team is playing. oh by the way we are ranked #1 in the la times poll. we are 5-0 and just beat another top 5 team, and u lost to diamond ranch and chatsworth(another has been just like amat), lol. ur anecdotes dont mean crap. all that is decades old. you were a great program but u cant compete with us big boys now and u know it. perhaps we may not be winnig titles but we are competitive every year in the toughest division in the nation and u cant argue that. you win div 5 titles we compete for div 1 titles pal. and ultimately what high school sports are about is turning out d1 athletes; and who turns out more mater dei or amat? lol, yeah keep your motuh shut!

Joe Amat said:

trueblue,

I'll make it simple for you and summarize your exchange in bullet points. See if you can follow the logic - if there is any.

_You proclaim your undying support for the Dodgers, hence the nickname
-You ragged on someone, guessing they support the Angels and referenced their lone championship in 2002
-Your Dodgers haven't won a title since 1988
-You find out your nemesis is really a Yankee fan and their 26 titles
-You mention the Yankees hadn't won a World Series in a while
-Your Dodgers haven't won a World Series since 1988
-You speak of celebrating only the Yankees recent divisional championships (5 this decade, 9 in the past 15 yrs) After all - it's only about championships
-Your Dodgers have one this decade and three in the last 15 years.
-Oh, but now you're a Mater Dei grad
-But Mater Dei hasn't won a baseball title since 1980
-Now you say MD plays in Division 1 and that's the reason
-Amat won a D1 title in 1996
-But what about Mater Dei football, you proclaim
-the last time the Lancers played the Monarchs - the Lancers won
-but Mater Dei has championships
-the Monarchs haven't won a title since 1996 and since '92 the Monarchs are up 3 wins to 2
-but now Amat plays in a lower division in baseball, that's why they win
-the last time Amat was in Mater Deis' baseball league (before the Orange County Nepotism Act of 2006) the Lancers were League Champions and won the season series against the butterflies.

-stick to the Mater Dei basketball argument - you've got that one... although as far as the SGV is concerned, the Lancers still have the last upper division boys CIF title of all schools in the SGV (2002) - but that was under a different regime and seems like forever ago.

i ignored your post because your argument makes no sense. come on dont compare mater dei to amat. its a joke and u make urself look like a fool when u do that. its like comparing the lakers to the clippers. come on u know that if mater dei played in the divisions that amat plays they would never lose a championship. u comepete in div 4 baseball, and u saw what happened to u in div1 football; and u guys actually had a great football season, lol. losing a close one to poly was an accomplishments, thats pathetic. so u criticize me about speaking on championships? u and ur program are pathetic, take care pops

You seemed to bypass a post that you could probably comment on.

I also find it interesting that , as a "trueblue" dodger fan and a mater dei alum, you had the nerve to rag on the angels and the yankees about championships!

Your Monarch butterflies haven't won a CIF baseball title since Bob Ickes was the coach in 1980 (football hasn't win outright since '98-you got the Lancers by 2 years on that one) and we've been waiting on our trolley Dodgers since '88. Ickes and Kurt Gibson are LONG gone... yet you're actually on someone else about the teams they support? Or that they have to settle for division titles instead of World Championships?

Pick a better argument.

How can South Hills be ranked number 8? They should be out of the top 10 for sure? A 1-3 start justifies the 8th best team in the valley? How is that possible. Oh, I know. Smitty forgot to mow his field for the sixth time in one day. The grass was too long for them too win. Pathetic!!!

National Classic said:

The SGV can hang in the National Classic. Charter Oak played in it in 2006 & Amat played in it last year & both local teams went 2-2. So NV has a chance to compete this year as well.
Besides with the cost of ttraveling now, most of the teams are from CA. 11 of 16 are CA & only 3 are from the east coast. I think NV will represent.

Oc worker,

The boys from Diamond bar's baseball team want to win!
Urban had enough rest and is a work horse, he needs the innings before league, and he would of made the difference in yesterdays game. The boys are confident and playing well together! let's go for every win possible.

El Toro is tough that's for sure should be a great game. Hope Shibley picks his pitcher smart for tomorrow. Coach shibley is thinking only of league at this point.....but the boys want the WINS!

Servite is a very good team! tight infield, and they can HIT. Diamond Bar can play with the best of them! Good luck DBHS!

oc workr said:

Tournament champs is nice, but there is only one winner, but you do not make cif playoffs based on that, it is standings in league. A coach trying to get another starter ready for primetime is looking ahead to the big picture: 1. making cif and 2. winning league. What happens if a starter goes down for whatever reasons???? What then?? Better that their first prime start was in a tournament rather than league.

If diamond bar wins against el toro watch out sierra league DB is back “with a vengeance” . El toro is legit with primetime pitching, D1 players and possible mlb draft picks. Enjoy that game and the talent on the field. Should have tons of electricity. Great opportunity for kids to make a name for themselves early on. Good luck against the OC.

Walnut said:

Walnut has been playing Pasadena, Rosemend, and other teams in that area. Holf has been moving kids all around. 3 pitchers a game. Still haven't use all thier pitchers. Cruz is looking good at ss. 2nd baseman is gone from last year thank god. Lee and Garcia is killing the ball.
Only lost two player from last year team. I didn't count 2nd baseman as a player.

My turn and even more fun,

Half pint, not bad, agree on the coach 100%, he contributed greatly to the 4 hr plus game on a school night. By the way why was the time limit in the program not enforced??? It says no new inning after 2 hr 45 min.????

Trueblue, Regardless of how they get their key players, NORTHVIEW, is flat out an elite team. Their defense is one of the best in socal D1 on down. It all starts up the middle and from MIF TO CF TO C they are strong. Defense, pitching (throwing located strikes), speed, and great unsung players (bottom of order won the game against Bonita) they will compete in the National. If anything they might not have enough starting pitchers to do real well, probably need 3, but they might have something up their sleeve. But Northview manages a 3 man staff better than anyone (2 starters and a closer).

Finally, I am not for transfers after soph yr, especially when the players are elite and have played varsity. BUT, I sure do not mind that a public school is able to attract talent and keep it when competing with the likes of the privates that recruit with camps and all. Oops a double standard, oh well not perfect.

This is fun.

These kids play for the love of the game and for you to come on here with your bs and knocking them on their accomplishments ,well it's just not needed. You state a div 4 title doesn't warrant an invite but our div 5 title did last year. They should be commended for getting invited to the classic not belittled. Do you think them beating us in last years Glendora tourney had anything to do with getting the invite. If you are trueblue then start acting like it and give credit where credit is due and quit acting like all the haters out there because you're giving us a bad rap with your posts. NV is the best team in the SGV as of this point and deservedly so. Northview (to much outstanding defense, speed, and transfer pitching)

Diamond Ranch (kudos on beating Amat, won’t last but poll came out today not Thursday)

Charter oak (still know how to win)

Just my thoughts said:

Fred,
So you don't see the need for wholesale changes because your perception of how a team may be before they play 1 game overrides how they play on the field. I'm not saying Amat should drop out of the top 10 but they don't DESERVE to be ahead of Diamond Ranch since DR is undefeated & BEAT Amat (however close the game was). Just like last year when NV beat Amat, NV deserved to be ahead of them. There is plenty of time left in the season for the highly ranked teams to make up ground & that is why it is not right to hold down teams at the beginning of the season based on your perceptions. SH has plenty of time to make up ground but at 1-3 they are NOT the #8 best team in the 2nd week of the season.
Baseball is a sport where even the best of the best usually don't go undefeated. Anything can happen. SH will probably be very good at the end but my point is make them earn it on the field & give teams who actually played well their time in the spotlight.

i wonder where northview will rank after they lose tonight?

Check out the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball rankings, which don't have knee-jerk reactions after a few games. You might have a little movement, but remember, unlike football and to some extent basketball, even the best of teams in baseball are going to lose a few games. The key to baseball rankings, at least early in the season, are a balance of what happens on the field and how good a team, based on talent, is suppose to be, just like Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball do with their rankings.

FredJ said:

You answered your own question, basically teams only have played one or two games, I didn't see the need for wholesale changes. The Amat-DRanch game could have gone either way, and in my opinion, Amat is still deserving based on what it has back and where it's ranked in their own Division, No. 2. Same with South Hills, they're probably even better than No. 8, but are off to a bad start.

Just my thoughts said:

Fred,

This poll is brutal. Not that most of the teams don't deserve to be in it; it has to do with how you come to your conclusions. Basically each team has only played 1 or 2 games yet your boys at Amat stay at #2 after Diamond Ranch beat them & are undefeated & are only at #5. South Hills is 1-3 after losing to Don Lugo & Ayala which are not powerhouses & you only move them to #8 while moving Charter Oak to #11 when they lose to a very good Glendora team & then shut out Arizona 11-0.
The poll should be how teams play, not your subjective potential on how good a team may be.

Damien has the arms, but the bats need to come alive. Their pitching has been superb and they haven't gotten through their whole rotation yet. This is going to be an exciting season for Leyva and the boys.

GO Damien!
