Boys Soccer All-Area
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Diego Rodriguez, Junior, Midfielder
School: Mountain View
Grade: Junior
Position: Midfielder
Notable: Vikings coach Felipe Corona describes his 5-foot-1 field general as the "heart and soul" of the CIF-Southern Section Division VI champions, who finished 21-5-4. After earning Mission Valley League first-team honors, Rodriguez scored the lone goal in a 1-0 semifinal victory over Viewpoint, then set-up the dramatics in the championship. With the game tied 1-1 in the first sudden-death overtime against undefeated Victorville Silverado, Rodriguez's incredible run down the left side ended with him slicing a pass toward the middle for Julio Fernandez, who scored the game-winning goal to lift the Vikings to a 2-1 victory and their second divisional title since 1995. Rodriguez only had three goals and eight assists, but he was named the Division VI player of the year for how well he manages all parts of the game, and makes everyone around him better.

Coach of the year
Name: Ricardo Mira
Notable:This season: Not only did Baldwin Park win the Valle Vista League title and advance to the CIF-Southern Section Division VI championships for the first time in school history, but they built a following that captured the heart of the school and community, which is a credit to Mira and his coaching staff. The Braves finished with the area's best record, going 23-2-2, which included their sudden-death 2-1 loss in the Division VI finals to three-time champion Salesian. The Braves got to the finals in dramatic fashion, beating La Canada in the quarterfinals on the road in penalty kicks, then defeating Animo Leadership in the semifinals on penalty kicks in front of more than 1,000 people. The Braves also proved to be the area's best team, beating Division VI champion Mountain View 1-0 in a nonleague game in January, and beating Montview league champion Sierra Vista, 3-1.
