Breaking News: Rohrer takes over at L.P.

| | Comments (25) |

"That's a good spot for him to begin his head coaching career, we'll miss him," said Glendora high football coach Mark Pasquarella said. "He's young, he has a bright mind, and the kids are going to love playing for him. He's got the kind of mind that works with new trend stuff, like the spread. He see's the big picture and knows football is not the end all, he will do well."

La Puente high school named Glendora high assistant Brandon Rohrer to take over its football program after Ray Hernandez resigned and took over at South El Monte High School. Rohrer, who already was a math teacher at La Puente, has been an assistant at Glendora for six years, and most recently has been the wide receivers coach. He also played at Glendora and attended Cal State Fullerton. It's his first head coaching job, but after working for Mark Pasquarella, this sounds like a great hire.
For tomorrow's story, click thread

Brandon Rohrer was at the right place at the right time.
Rohrer, a Glendora High school wide receivers coach the past six years under Tartans coach Mark Pasquarella, has been named La Puente High School's head football coach following the resignation of Ray Hernandez, who is now at South El Monte.
Rohrer, who began teaching at La Puente last fall, also played at Glendora and graduated at Cal State Fullerton, bringing a wealth of experience for a first-year head coach.
"That's a good spot for him to begin his head coaching career, we'll miss him," Pasquarella said. "He's young, he has a bright mind, and the kids are going to love playing for him.
"He's got the kind of mind that works with new trend stuff, like the spread. He see's the big picture and knows football is not the end all, he will do well."
Rohrer, also an assistant basketball coach under Glendora's Mike LeDuc, said he's ready to get off to a fresh start, and knows things didn't end well for the program with Hernandez leaving over philosophical differences with the school's administration.
"The great thing about being at the school already is I got to see what type of kids we have, and there is still a lot of pride in La Puente, they care about their football," Rohrer said. "I've met the kids and they're excited about a new beginning. They're already asking me about the offense."
Rohrer, who called plays occasionally in Glendora's spread offense, will also serve as the Warriors offensive coordinator and bring the spread offense to the Montview League.
"Coaching under (Pasquarella) and (LeDuc) has really prepared me to take over a program." Rohrer said. "Coach P is so good at X's and O's, and executing the details. I feel very fortunate to have coached with him and will miss Glendora. But I'm looking forward to going on my own and building something at La Puente."
La Puente fell to 1-9 last year after winning the Montview league title in 2008.
"The biggest challenge is getting guys to buy into your system," Rohrer said. "I feel good about the type of offense and defense we want to run, but the players have to buy in and compete."
Warriors athletic director Jose Espinoza was glad he didn't have to look far to find the right fit.
"He an up-and-coming coach and it's in his blood," Espinoza said. "We're excited to have him, we think he's got a bright mind and is excited about the challenge. Anytime you work under someone like Pasquarella, you're going to learn a few things, so we think this is a great place for him to start."

I would just like to provide a little bit of info regarding LP's track record. Although the #'s may not be too impressive for certain events, we still are able to send our student athletes onto the show. I graduated in 86 and I would have to say that we won league titles and had CIF finalists and Champions.

LP,
bro your a dumba** really do u think old burnsie developed these kids.He never stressed the fundamentals of football, the only thing he did was yell in your face like he was a drill sgt and tried to fire u up. As for sgv_player i agree with u once again, burns is a freshmen coach and thats all, has he ever assisted on the varsity level. like i said before about track its a joke, and so what about the nfl players being in it, they could have trained by them selves in the offseason,As a proven fact 78% of nfl players never did track in high school or college. they stayed in offseason training. the sport only determines how fast or how far you throw then the next competitor. As for parent support, come on lets be serious, you think the parents wanna see a sport with no action. As for the present freshmen coaches yeah your probably right they are old school and i love old school they teach fundamentals and hard hitting the way football should really be played. and wow you named reggie bush in track in high school, name some other off the top of your head.

To LP,

Son, you should never post a note on this blog again. It gave me a headache trying to read what you wrote. The use of punctuation and complete sentences is something that you should have been taught while you were in school. I see you either missed that lesson or you didn't pay attention during your last 9 years of school.

As for Burns, McMillon didn't get rid of him, Hernandez did. I will say this, Ward, Koffler, and McMillon all wanted to get rid of him, but they could never find a freshman coach who would be committed. Secondly, Burns didn't develop those kids into varsity football players...........the varsity coaches did. The majority of kids who played for Burns never ever started on a varsity field. However, the last couple of years, many freshman have came up to the varsity level and have made an impact. These freshman were actually developed by the current freshman staff.

Get your facts straight and stop trying to make Donnie Burns into the second coming of Vince Lombardi!

look sgv_player the time don was coaching the fresmen team LP didnt need a varsity caoch they had a good one rick ward untill he got srewed by the LP principle that was there then mcmillion aka mcmuffin came in and hes the one that didnt want burns in the first place so when bunrs was coaching the fresmen team he deleope those players that why the varsity football was successfull there at LP and they had a three peat there the only time that even been done in the schools history as for the track if they got more support from parents and stuff they would be better as far as u say track is a joke look all the nfl players they had history of being in track reggie bush is an example and others as well

Well Brandon, way to move up. If i remember right, he was JV Head Coach at Glendora for a time and in 3 years they went 26-4 and 3 League Championships A 10-0 Season , and a 9-1 Season. Pretty good for a kid that Graduated from Glendora in 01. He lettered in Basketball and Football, so they guy is a competitive guy. A smart guy, kind of a players coach. His youth will help him with the boys and it will hopefully turn out ok for the man. With LeDuc and Pasqy as Mentors he's doing pretty well in Head Coach 101 so he just needs the players and the staff to work with him.

But as for Rohrer keep going you skinny blonde 26 year old.

He worked for the public parks at 1 time for the city before he taught. He's a giver toward the community.

Ex LP Player and Lp,

what the hell do u guys know about cif? really? maybe 2 athletes have gone to cif and won mothing, does he send anyone that involves running event? i dont think so. by the way track and field is a joke, its a individual sport not a team sport. sgv_player i agree completely about your comments of burns and footall. if burns was a such a great coach why hasnt he won a cif title for the school? the only thing he wins is a league title, that just says your better then 6 other team in your league, and im talking about the terrible montview league these days.

sgv_player said:

Don Burns is the biggest piece of donkey crap you will ever meet! I tip my hat off to the LP track athletes because Don Burns doesn't know the difference between a stride and a sprint. A track coaches goal should be to get as many kids as possible to C.I.F. I think in the last 8 years, Burns maybe has 16 athletes to C.I.F from track. That is 2 a year! That is pathetic.

As for him being the freshman coach, just because you are a good freshman coach doesn't mean you can be a quality varsity coach. If he was such a great football coach, then he would have been coaching on the varsity level years ago. The dude spent so much time designing freshman league champ shirts, that he could never improve on his coaching. No matter, the one smart thing Hernandez did was fire Burns butt from coaching freshman football.

Finally, he is a liar. The man talks about UCLA constantly and swears up and down he got his degree from their and that he played football for them. I had someone do some digging years ago and there is no record of a Don/Donnie Burns playing football or even attending UCLA!!

La Puentay check ur fact bro before the start talking and saying wat u are saying LP track had some bright stars through it years even though their team is big but there are some years where they were small like in 2001 they had a small team but they were good and like LP alumni said if they had the athlete they would be really good. trust me on that and if you dont find some kids and send them to LP for track and see wat they can do and become

Ex LP Player said:

Coach Burns is a good coach, whether it be in track & field or in football, his freshmen teams dominated. What happened in varsity i do not know.

As for Track athletes in CIF, there have been one or two bright spots, Louis Rodriguez in the Discus two Two Years Ago. Edward Bonilla in triple jump last year made it to CIF finals at 44'1"t, he can only improve this year.

La Puentay said:

2000 LP Alum,
the only reason the track coach wins is because he has like 50 track people, while other schools have about 20 and of course hes gonna rack up more points because the other schools athletes dont comepete in every event and they didnt even win league last year, they choked and they are not gonna win it this year either, and his athletes do nothing in cif by the way.

To all of those hard working coaches who also work hard teaching. I hope the districts realize how important you are and that you keep your jobs in this rough economy. I know of a couple of young teacher/coaches who are receiving "pink slips." Good luck gentlemen and keep up the faith.

Billy Preston said:

"right place right time" ..not sure you know much about football or sports for that matter but what two football coache were in the Super Bowl thsi year? Did you know neither one of them had "Heach Coaching" experience and it worke dout for them?

"I was in the right room...... but it must have been the wrong time!!!!

2000 LP Alum said:

The most successful and win ingest coach LP has had is their Track coach all that guy does is win whatever type of kids come out for Track that staff turns them into winners I ran in that program they do more with little talent than most do with more talent, both men & women 11 league championships in 14 years, so there’s proof if the right coach is in place any program can win at LP.

"right place at the right time" said:

"Brandon Rohrer was at the right place at the right time."

Lets all understand the situation at LP. They had to fill the position from within LP, the district wasn't going to allow them to hire another teacher. That is why the job was never posted, no funding. Nothing against this guy but going from a wide receiver coach to a head coach of a PROGRAM. Very similar situation at LA, Coach A a quarterback coach takes over a big PROGRAM with zero head coach experience at any level. Look what happened to the program over at LA.

I'm shutting down the snack bar! said:

Now, hopefully all of the cry baby parents and booster club president (whos son has no dicipline or leadership qualities) will be gone also and the program can move forward.

sgv_player said:

They need to dump his sorry behind now. Ken Cassidy has to hate what this idiot has done to the athletic department at LP since he turned it over to Espi_Knows_Nothing!

He couldn't coach baseball (his teams never could get the local talent and if he did, he didn't know what to do with it). and horrible teacher(find me one student who has ever learned a thing in his Spanish classes), so why in the heck did they think this idiot would make a good AD! Then again this is LP!!

lpfootballfan said:

FYI
Espinosa will step down as AD at the end of the school year. good luck to his replacement.

PATIENCE IS A VERTUE said:

Once they finally get rid of Espinosa, the last of the dead weight will be gone. All the pieces are falling into place, stick around to see the difference.

mrman1 said:

The Hernandez era if officially over. I am quite sure the new HC knows that Ava Smalley and Jose Espinosa are 2 of the stupidest people in the history LP, HLPUSD, and education in general. He will find a way to do well in spite of those 2 idiots.

Two football players miss practice. Team rule "you do not play on game day if you miss practice." Principal tells head coach that "He has to play them." Head coach tell principal NO. My team, my rules , how are these kids going to learn?? HEAD COACH FIRED. GOOD LUCK COACH Brandon Rohrer, Your going to need it.

playallday said:

congrats coach rohrer,

we are going to miss you at ghs, which glendora assistance are you taking with you? hopefully lawrence, but i doubt it.
you did a great job calling plays for the freshman a couple of years ago, i always thought you should have been calling more plays on varsity, good luck, i am a lp alum and i know you are going to deal with alot of issues, keep your head on a swivel

La Puentay said:

this is not breaking news its actually old news my brother plays on the team and they hired him like 2 weeks ago. We'll it sucks how hernandez was forced to resign. we'll good luck to coach Rohrer and hopefully he doesnt have to go through what Rick Ward and Ray Hernandez had to go through with that terrible administration @ lp. Good luck coach Rohrer and Lp.
