Just Tribbin through All-Area

Anything and anyone you want to talk about

Steve and I are finalizing the all-area teams for boys and girls basketball, soccer, girls water polo and wrestling, and should be inviting first-teamers in soon for pictures. Picking players of the year has been extremely difficult, but so is separating the first and second teams. If you have any final input on anyone, go ahead, we're listening.

Fred,

I think you should also cover some track meets Baldwin Park as well as Ganesha has some pretty good distance runners on the rise.

Agree on Cunningham, Johnson, Abernathy all three are Mc Donalds nominess as well. Salley for sure and maybe Serrano and Kos belong too.

Coaches- Lu Duc not this year, Roper or Eckler both did great jobs considering what they started with.

Mountain View is not the best team in the SGV... Just because they won CIF doesn't mean the COY and POY should come out of that school... Several other teams that deserve them as well... B.P. being one of them, they did have a much better record than MV overall... Oh and B.P. did beat MV this season as well... It's going to be tough to choose the POY and COY...

Fred,

What is the schedule for the all-valley announcements? When can we expect to see your picks in the paper?

Wild Bill said:

Bobby Miles Serrano was incredible. Just a very solid player. The point Guard form Glendora also played tremendous for the Tartans. Chris Adams was just sick for Damien. But I'd have to go with Kobe Bryant...opps that the Lakers.. My bad...Fred that's a tough one this year...seeing you get grilled, blasted, praised, congratulated, and admonished will be a hoot!

sorry but you know it's true ..."

BOYS SOCCER,

I WOULD ASSUME THE ALL-VALLEY SOCCER COACH AND PLAYERS OF THE YEAR SHOULD COME FROM THE BEST SCHOOL IN THE SGV. WITH THAT SAID THE BEST SCHOOL HAS TO BE THE ONE THAT BROUGHT HOME THE TITLE! DIEGO RODRIGUEZ, JULIO FERNANDEZ, OMAR RODRIGUEZ... TAKE YOUR PICK! AND HOW ABOUT THAT DEFENSE LED BY ENRIQUE MIRANDA, FABIAN VILLASENOR, AND GOALKEEPER IRAN RODRIGUEZ!? AND CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT FIRST TIME CIF CHAMP COACH FELIPE CORONA!

GREAT JOB VIKINGS!

Chancho said:

Coach of the Year should be Roper from Nogales. Team's accomplishments speaks for itself. Player of the year should be Guerrero from Workman.

sgvfan said:

Greg Eckler should be COY and Nolan Abernathy should be all-area. Bonita returned one starter from last year and was still a top three team all year. They won the glendora tournament, beat chino hills in the SD/glendora championship, won the alhambra tournament, finished third in the covina tourney, second to D Ranch in league, and won 2 CIF games before losing a close road game to Cif champ Harvard Westlake. Other all-area players should be cunningham, johnson, nogales guard, and guerrero.

I think Jordan Salley from La Verne Lutheran is a good pick for player of the year no doubt the kid is one of the best in the area

Tiger,

Do me a favor...click the following link regarding a young lady from Los Altos named Tiffany Lua and then talk to me about the most accomplished athlete in the area.

THIS is a story you should write Fred! She's got a full scholly to UCLA and was captain of the Junior Ryder Cup Team! Yes, THAT Ryder Cup!

Player of the year. all area, and all league will go to which coach has more balls.

I say CJ MVP for sure! So does anyone know why amat was such a big turn around from last years garbage? Did anyone player stand out or what happened over there?

boomer said:

Bobby Miles-Serrano should get first team all area. Fred, you've seem him numerous times and you know damn well he can play at any school in the valley, if not the whole STATE!!!!! CJ should be player of the year, just look at lobo love's post. he explained it well.

SGV Dad,
Great job on your pics, not familiar with all the girls. But interesting that 6 of these girls play for the same club soccer team; "Legends FC Girls 17 Premier": Natalie, Aissa, Emily, Jessica, Jasmine & Daniella(Amanda used to play with them too however she went back to play her own age group last year). Great group of girls and all but one currently committed to playing college.

I don't think you remember me saying this, but a couple months back I called in saying that Bobby Miles was going to get League MVP. Maybe it was the politics, but the kid deserved it. 3 years of work. Almost averaging a double double as a guard is pretty good.

FredJ said:

SGV Dad, that's a pretty good rough draft, a lot of your selections are spot on..

luis said:

Justine Padilla Junior from Los Altos for Goal Keeper.

Once again(led as a freshman, sophmore, and now as a junior) she has led the miramonte league in stats, and has yet to be named to all league anything.

Sometimes it makes you wonder what the people who pick the players are basing it on.

so Freddy, I told u crutch, was over at b.p. he also took 3 of our guys wit em.

Tiger said:

I'll tell you who the most accomplished athlete in the area is. You should do a story on him Fred.

Josh Granger

Maranatha High School golfer.

In 4 years of varsity golf, you could count on one hand the amount of times he didn't finish atop the scoreboard.

He's a great kid, Fred. Do a story about him!

If I had to pick a team to represent our side of the SGV it would look something like this.

The SGV Tribune Area team won't look like this (more teams will be represented) but these are the best players I’ve seen play this year. Most if not all of these players will play at the next level. Actually only one of these players may or may not play in college.

Forwards: Victoria Camaj (SL), Natalie Maxey (SH), Ariel Shore (SD), Aissa Sanchez (G)

Midfielders: Emily Wood (G), Krissy Slusser (W), April Juarez (BA), Jessica Smetherman (G)

Defenders: Lynsey Browne (SL), Jasmine Roth (BA), Danielle Perez (SL), Marrisa Woods (W)

Goal Keepers: Amanda Robles (DR), Justine Padilla (LA)

Coach: Ruben Gonzalez (BA)

There was a super group of Freshman this year that includes: Mayra Almazan (SH), April Juarez (BA) and Victoria Camaj (SL) This group of freshman players are some of the most technically gifted players we have in the area, should be fun to watch for the next couple of years.

FredJ said:

Here's a little something to chew on, the Montview League MVP went to Bobby Miles-Serrano, Guerrero was on the first team. That's Montview league politics at its best

Carlos said:

I agree with Lobo Love, Cezar Guerrero should be player of the year. He had a huge impact on his team's success this season. Similar to what Jerry Santos did for South Hills when he played there or Tiger Cortes at Glendora.

Jeremy said:

Albert Cid at Mt Crack.

Lobo Love said:

Fred,

I do understand that Diamond Ranch, Nogales, and Glendora all had good years but if anyone can say that there was a player that had as good of a year as Cezar Guerrero and as much of an impact, they are flat out crazy!!! CJ put up 28 a game and along with the rest of the Lobos placed Workman ON THE MAP!!! They came across a tough Cathedral team in what turned out to be a really tough division. But again, let's not forget that we are talking about a SOPHOMORE that put up crazy numbers and brought the Workman Program to light. No disrespect to the other players or programs, but CJ was lights out this year!

Amatfan said:

Fred
Any news about Albert Cid?

Breal said:

ANY FIRST TEAM SHOULD INCLUDE WALNUT HIGH MARISSA WOODS, HAVE YOU SEEN HER PLAY DEFENSE, YOU CAN SEE HER PLAY AT U C RIVERSIDE THE NEXT FOUR YEARS.

SGV-SoccerFan said:

for Girls Soccer:

1/Natalie Maxie - South Hills - she has been playing extraordinary for the past few years & she is only a Junior, I am sure the best is yet to come.
2/Ariel Shore - San Dimas - Ariel is an extremely talented athlete. Look for her in the softball circuit as well!
and 3/Krissy Slusser - Walnut HS - Krissy has been a huge positive to the crippling WHS dynasty. Due to her efforts, WHS narrowly won league this year.

Boys Basketball Coach of The Year: Rick Roper, Nogales High School. Destroyed San Antonio League competition (8-0) CIFSS semi-finalist. Incredible feat considering the trouble the team got into prior to the season.

I've always thought it was good to see what kids were all league selections. Nobody knows better who the good players are than the coaches of the leagues. If you can find a way to get your hands on those lists before choosing that would help you a lot I am sure

sgvtribunefan said:

Fred,
Just wanted to make sure that you go through all of the stats now that teams have put their stats in. I know there were a lot of good basketball teams both boys and girls who didn't put stats in during the year. I know as someone who covers sports it might be frustrating for you that the stats weren't in during the year making those teams harder to cover but remember that was the coaches decision and not the boy or girl athlete that decided to do that so they should not be punished. My only other opinion is there might be some kids that put up big stats against lesser competition in weaker leagues. However, I believe kids that played in strong leagues like the Sierra league, Miramonte league, etc. should be rewarded for having to play tough teams night in and night out.

I DON'T KNOW IF DIEGO RODRIGUEZ FROM MV HIGH SCHOOL WILL BE THE MVP THIS YEAR BUT HE PLAYS FOR HIS TEAM WITH THE HART BECAUSE HIS A SOCCER WARIOR THAT SUPORTS HIS TEAM MATES ALL THE TIME. THEY ALL ARE WINNERS,KEEP GOING VIKINGS ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP,DON'T NEVER GIVE UP.

Hope the "Whittierfan" is still in school learning grammer.

A great argument could be made for Jordan Salley and his 17pt/11 reb for Player of the Year. Love to see him today match up against big Chris from DR.

And regarding Cunningham and Johnson. Both excellent players who are getting a chance to play at the next level, but really...what did they both accomplish on the basketball floor in this past year in basketball that no one else did in the SGV? I saw them play each of the last three years and I felt like they were short changed in coaching and the team could have progressed even further. I loved the talent on that team (including Green and Adames - to a certain extent, although in the last two years he hasn't developed as maybe he could have) Again - not a knock on the kids at all... I think they needed a bit more guidance.

he should make all area, he averaged 22 a game in the valle vista

Chris Cunningham & Garrett JOhnson, Co-players of the year. Fred, If you look at what they truly accomplished throughout the entire year it all speaks for itself. Eventhough they didn't get past the 3rd round CIF it was their game that got them there. Those two young men have been really overlooked and underrated! They sacraficed a lot to get DR on the map!!! And they were consistent one or the other!! They both accomplished things in this past year in Basketball that no one else did in the SGV! GO DRRRRRRRRR

sgvpride said:

Coach of the year: either Roper from nogales or Leduc. Its a lock on those two

Player of the Year: this is a tough one but I would have to say either a player from nogales or glendora. Possibly one of the two from dranch. Not one guy made that big of a case. Maybe CJ Guerrero, but they didn't get past the 2nd round. So he is a no.

Fred,

When do the all league and all CIF teams come out???

Did Albert Cid from West Covina receive any scholarship offers to play football next year.
