Baseball: South Hills, Charter Oak win

Miramonte League: After crushing Diamond Ranch earlier in the week, Charter Oak made it a sweep with a 7-6 victory at home.

San Antonio League: South Hills held on to defeat Nogales 3-2 to avenge Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to the Nobles. The Huskies took a 3-0 lead into the seventh. After the Nobles trimmed it to 3-2, they had runners on second and third with two outs, but relief pitcher Christian Ibarra got a ground out to end the game.

Today: There are two games we have scheduled to cover. Charter Oak crushed Diamond Ranch 17-4 earlier in the week, and get the Panthers at home again this afternoon. The other game is South Hills and Nogales II. The Nobles won a thriller on Wednesday, 2-1, scoring in the bottom of the seventh. If the Nobles go to South Hills today and get a sweep, the San Antonio is theirs to lose.

Thursday’s results
Valle Vista League

Baldwin Park 13, Covina 2
Northview 15, Pomona 0
Ganesha, San Dimas, no result called in or updated on Maxpreps.
Sierra League
Diamond Bar 9, Glendora 3
Damien 11, Chino Hills 3
Chino 3, Ayala 2

Did you know: That Baldwin Park is now 5-1 and 2-0 after sweeping Covina. Northview is also 5-1 and 2-0. This is what I love about a new season. Last year it was Covina, San Dimas and Northview battling for the title. This year it appears that Baldwin Park is playing as well as anyone.

Sierra League watch: This is going to be such a close race to the end. Getting off to a quick start is important, you do not want to play catch-up, so Damien and Diamond Bar have to feel good about league opening wins. Even more impressive was how easy Damien beat Chino Hills, and how Diamond Bar went to Glendora and won by six runs.

Stop asking, track coverage is back!

Covina High School track coach Kevin Glaspy helped us last year provide weekly track leaders and it was a huge success. He sent an email saying he’s ready to go again, along with a message for track coaches, athletes and fanatics.

I found a way through Epi Sports to easily come up with the area’s top track marks without having to sift through every result. Dyestat as you all know is the track person’s everything resource. They have results from every track invitational in the state as well as top marks throughout the weeks. Please let your readers know the following:

1) All SGV top marks list will only be those marks submitted into the EPIsports or dyestatcal database. Do not send updated marks to the tribune or anyone else. Coaches have the ability to submit their weekly marks themselves.

2) Wind legal/aided marks are listed as indicated, as well as the date and site of the accomplishment and athlete information.

Thanks, Kevin Glaspy

Softball: Los Altos rallies past Bonita, 6-4

Game Update: After Bonita took a 4-0 lead, Los Altos rallied back to tie it 4-4 in the fifth, then Courtney Gano hit a inside the park two-run homer in the fifth to win it, 6-4.

Today’s game: The Tribune’s No. 1 Los Altos is at No. Bonita, and I know that Bonita loves my predictions, because they shoved it in my face after I picked San Dimas to beat them, and we all know what happened with that. Sorry Cats, there is no way I can pick you today either. I know you’re improved, by far the most improved around, but I have a feeling the Conqs make a state this afternoon.

Did you know: That Bishop Amat only beat Arroyo 4-3 in six innings to go to 2-0 in the Arroyo tournament on Wednesday. It’s a win but, isn’t that cutting it kid a close? Amat beat Nogales 7-0 in the opener.

Results: Keep in mind that we have two phone people taking scores for the Whittier Daily News, Star-News and Tribune, so phone lines get busy. You can always call 626-962-8811, Ext. 2233 or 2242, but it might be easier to just email results to scores@sgvn.com. Just send the information you normally would for a boxscore (look at the paper if you’re not sure) and send it in. If we get it by 9 p.m., it usually gets in the next day. Leave a call back number in case we have questions. How hard is that?
