BASEBALL UPDATE: Happy Rock wins own tourney, Northview 2-2 in National Classic, South Hills, Bishop Amat, Southlands (who?) all lose

Update: Northview wins its final game in the National Classic, 7-5, to go 2-2 in the presigious tournament, matching the 2-2 record that Bishop Amat had in the Classic last year.

Did you know: That Southlands Christian is in Walnut. Shame on us for not including them more. This is Sounthlands pitcher Andrew King letting one go in the first inning on Wednesday.

WITH TOURNAMENTS WINDING DOWN, LETS UPDATE …

Gladstone tournament: You have to hand it to Gladstone, who has one of the best and most unappreciated coaches around in Rich Remkus. Gladstone beat Wilson, 3-2 in the championship on Wednesday, which is the same Wilson team that knocked off Bonita a couple weeks ago. The Gladiators are now 11-3, and knocking on the door of a top ten ranking. said Remkus: “We don’t swing the bats real well, but this team has shown a remarkable ability to come back. This was the fourth straight game where we won a game in our last at-bat. I applaud the kids. They showed tremendous character.”

National Classic: Northview fell to 1-2 in the National Classic after losing to Norco, 7-4 on Wednesday. The best thing you can say about the Vikes is that they have competed in every game against some of the best teams in the state and country. They’re an extra-inning game from being 2-1, and they have led in every game they played going into the sixth inning, not bad. Today Northview finishes with either Jesuit (CA) or Concord De La Salle (the result has not been posted) at Esperanza High School at 1 p.m. For confidence reasons, this game is important. Going 2-2 feels so much better than going 1-3.

Anaheim Lions tournament: Doesn’t it always happen. After giving Bishop Amat its props for going on a 12-game winning streak and starting 4-0 in the 46-team Lions tournament, they dropped a 3-2 decision to Reno, NV (17-3) in Wednesday’s third-place game. The Lancers had their chances with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, but couldn’t push the tying or winning runs across.

Don Lugo tournament: I don’t have the results of our locals since they’re not being reported on Maxpreps or called into the paper (hint, hint). This happens when you lose sometimes, it’s easy to forget. I don’t know the final scores, but South Hills crushed Baldwin Park to open the tournament, then got beat by Chino Hills on Wednesday.

Bosco Tech tournament: Southlands Christian, and that’s Walnut Southlands Christian, reached the championship of the Bosco Tech tournament and lost 16-6 to the host Tigers. The greatest things about this, we gave some love to Southlands and covered the game. With photos I might add.

Today’s Big Sierra League game: Diamond Bar at Glendora, 3:15 p.m.
