That’s more like it Los Altos, but don’t sleep on South Hills .. Bonita mercies Diamond Ranch, 10-0

Game Update: Any concern over losing and tying a doubleheader against South Hills over the weekend was put to rest by the Bonita High School softball team. Amber Bachman smacked her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to center that ended the game because of the mercy rule, giving the Bearcats a 10-0 victory over visiting Diamond Ranch in six innings on Thursday. Leadoff hitter Breanna Sandoval had a big afternoon, going 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI. Sandoval’s two-out single in the second inning scored Vanessa Romero, giving the Bearcats a 3-0 lead, which was more than enough for pitcher Chloe Wurst, who allowed just two hits in earning the complete-game shutout.

At Wednesday’s Los Altos-South Hills softball game, I got what I expected, a 12-0 Conquerors victory which sounds more lopsided than it actually was. First, South Hills is on its way. Not this year, but the next three years for sure. They’re so young and talented, and I can understand how they can knock off a team like Bonita, then get hammered the next game. They’re inexperienced, but freshmen Britney Rodriguez (a total stud), Kristen Stewart, Sydney La Folette and sophomore’s Sam Nieves, Taylor Fisch and junior pitcher Victoria Bernard (who was much better than I thought), will grow into a dangerous bunch. Now, Los Altos, I have to tip my hat, you finally showed some zing. It took coach Lydell McCullough to challenge them to show more hunger after the third inning (heck the whole park heard him dig into them), and that’s what they did, come out swinging with a purpose. When this team is zeroed in and focused, they’re the best team in the area, hands down. With catcher Roxy Avalos hitting a two-run homer, and double, her hot bat adds to a lineup that features Washington State bound Courtney Gano, Latisha Dedeaux, Victoria Contreas (also a homer and double) and Diana-lynn Patterson, still the area’s most complete player. Los Altos’ biggest opponent is themselves, but if they can rise and meet the energy of their opponent like they did on Wednesday, there is not a team in the Valley that can hang with them, including Glendora.
