Baseball: Sierra Vista's Huerta throws a no-hitter; Damien pounded by Chino Hills

Maybe we don't pay enough attention to the Montview League. Check this out, Sierra Vista High School's Christian Huerta has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the area the past few weeks. Thursday, he showed how dominant, throwing the school's first no-hitter in more than a decade in a 7-0 victory over Workman. Huerta, who just missed throwing a no-hitter lat week against Duarte, also STRUCK OUT 18 to improve to 4-2. He walked two batters. Sierra Vista improved to 10-4 and 5-1. Huerta becomes the first Dons pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Pete Flores in 1995. Flores threw five consecutive shutouts that season. "He should have two in a row," Dons coach Brett Stevens said of Huerta. "He had one going last week when they bunted with us leading 24-0. He had 10 strikeouts in that game." Question: At 10-4, should Sierra Vista crack the top ten rankings.
Correspondent John Honell called to thank me (sarcastically) for sending him to Thursday's Chino Hills-Damien marathon. Chino Hills won 16-8 as Damien walked 11 in the first three innings alone.

Bonita back in action today hoping to rebound from Wednesday's loss to Charter Oak.

Diamond Bar's defense needs to improve greatly before they can move in a good direction. A week ago Thursday I went to Chino Hills High School I thought the Varsity game was there (It was at Diamond Bar) my mistake. I watched 2.5 innings of J.V. play, it was so pathetic! the defense was so bad. Diamond Bar's shortstop on J.V. was a mess in the two innings he made 4 errors. The loose infield was painful to watch. If D.B. doesn't pull their defense together on Varsity and J.V. soon it will be all over for D.B.and Coach Shibley. The defense looks worse for the next year if thats possible. Back to basics Coach take some ground balls work on the boys foot work.In the outfield scratch them all and start over. Good luck Diamond Bar.

AZUSA and Gladstone played a great game yesterday! They both played their hearts off, but Gladstone came back in the 8th inning to win. The Final score was 8-7. The series is split and all four teams have a chance to win the league.

The team that doesn't lose anymore games should take the league. Yesterday also, the AZUSA track and field team completed dominated nearly all the events.

Their track team hasn't lost a match and should be a good meet against La Puente. I believe they have a sprinter who runs the 100 m in 10.85. That's pretty fast.

Great Job to all the teams of AZUSA yesterday including the girls softball teams.

Bonita 10 Los Altos 1 Nico Calderon pitched great! Go bearcats!

Gladstone split the two game series with sierra vista and Azusa. It is going to be a good league race for the montview league title. Weak league or not there is talent in the montview league

the best team in a horrible league can beat a top ten team. That's why they have C.I.F. playoffs

Sierra Vista plays in a horrible league where they think pounding on a helpless Duarte team will take them to CIF. There an average team on a horrible league. no top 10 for them

Gladstone just missed sweeping sierra vista last week. They should be in the top 10

After seeing the first 5 game in the sierra league there is no clear cut favorite for the title.
As of now I would rate Glendora and Chino as the favorites. The only team out of the race is Ayala who lost to Chino twice this week. Last year they did make the playoffs by getting hot the last 5 weeks of the season.
3rd place will be a battle between Damien,Diamond Bar and Chino Hills. Damien and Chino Hills have one good starter in Matt Whitehouse(DHS) and Ryan Dunn(CHHS). Diamond Bar has 2 good starters and shaky defense. You just cannot win cifss playoff games with bad defense.
As for the D2 rankings the top 2 teams are deep in pitching, have good hitting, and good defense. Yucaipa lost their first game this week losing to a good Rancho Buena Vista team. They did finish the tournament going 3-1 beating El Capitan 4-1. El Toro has a good chance of winning the National Classic with deep pitching staff. Speaking about umpires strike zone I went to a REV-Redlands game last week and the umpire had a Eric Gregg stike zone calling pitches 1-2 feet outside strikes. The REV ace Jeremy Perez was effective keeping everything outside and won 1-0. In the entire 7 innings he threw no more than 5-6 pitches for strikes. The Redlands ace(Charles Lutz)who now has lost 2 games in a row by 1-0 made only 2 mistakes by throwing pitches in the strike zone which were hit in the gaps for doubles.
