Baseball: Amat cements No. 1 ranking

Above: After a slow start, Amat's Paul Paez is finding his groove again.
Baseball top ten rankings
1. Bishop Amat (13-3) - It's amazing that some folks on this blog still want to talk about what happened in the Glendora tournament. How about what's happened lately, like an 11-game winning streak, the pitching and hitting in balance, and top notch wins over Servite, Lutheran and Santa Margarita. Don't argue with our No. 1, we know what we're talking about.
2. Glendora (11-4) - How impressive was their run to the Arcadia tournament title, beating host Arcadia and No. 1 pitcher Rutherford in the championship, 3-0. They also beat St. Francis, Nogales and San Dimas, and deserve this big bump to No. 2
3. Northview (9-3) - With the Vikings losing to Arch Bishop Mitty 8-7 in nine innings today, they move into the loser's bracket of the National Classic. Since the competition they're facing is so unique, I'm only dropping them one spot for now.
4. Bonita (12-3) - Do you move Charter Oak ahead after beating Bonita in the championship of the Northview tournament? Not so quick, they are 1-1 against each other, and the Bearcats own a tournament title too, winning Glendora to start the year.
5. San Dimas (10-3) - - The Saints' only loss in the Arcadia tournament came in extra innings against tournament champ Glendora. They're looking like the real deal and can't wait until their home-and-home against Northview later down the road.
6. Charter Oak (12-5) - The Chargers are improving week to week and gaining confidence along the way. The way they battled back against Diamond Bar before knocking off Bonita 3-0 in the Northview tournament was impressive. Now let's see if they can keep it up.
7. South Hills (10-5) - A very impressive 6-3 win over a 13-3 Beckman team in the Beach Pit Classic. They lost to Newport Harbor, then came back and beat Corona del Mar. Today they face Baldwin Park at 12:30 at Baldwin Park as part of the Don Lugo tournament.
8. Damien (10-4) - Spliting with Chino Hills is nothing to feel bad about, but the runs the Spartans allow must be a concern. They lost 16-8 to the Huskies after winning 8-7 earlier in the week.
9. Nogales (13-5) - They lose to San Dimas and Glendora in the Arcadia tournament, but still go 2-2. Now they finish up the Don Lugo tournament against Duarte and Diamond Ranch
10. Wilson (8-4) - The Wildcats crack the top ten for the first time this season after an impressive 4-3 win over Bonita and a staggering five game winning streak under first-year coach Gary Libby. If you said you saw this coming, you're just not telling the truth.

glendora rep,
How in the heck can you still be crying about our pre-season or early season ranking. We knew we were a very young team and it would take a little time to gel .As you can see NOW we are living up to that billing. Just be thankful we went to the OC to rep the SGV and taking care of business. What do you think that does for the valley considering some local teams beat us early on.I think it helps shed some good light on our SGV teams. Someone has to be number 1 in the rankings but really if you had a tournament with the top teams, who knows who would come out on top. All very good and well coached teams. Now that would be a hell of a tournament.

"All the amat fans that want to pump sunshine, remember, the Lions tournament starts Saturday and we shall see how good this YOUNG Amat team actually is."
"Let’s wait and see when they start playing some real teams. We’ll revisit this on 4/26, after their tournament run."
"The Times posted on 4/6 these three SGV teams on their top 25.
5. BONITA
11. ARCADIA (east of the 605)
20. NORTHVIEW
No BA, and I'm not BS'ing"
Do you guys still want to pop off? Amat is definitely the best team in the SGV. Amat went into to the OC and spanked everyone.

It is time to stop talking about what happen at Glendora tournament. Amat this Amat that. It is about right now. They are winning and winning and winning. So please just get over it. There record speaks for its self. Go AMAT Go.................

Amat is doing well now, but was HORRIBLE in the Glendora tournament and they shouldn't have been ranked as high as they were, they only NOW are climbing but when fred had them ranked too high all along - not far to fall. Amat sucked at the beginning of their season.

AMAT -8 Cypress -5

Error's again kill Diamond Bar! Weak 1st base and outfield. What a shame. 4 errors....in reality at least 6 error's! Diamond Bar has great pitching it's their defense.

Joe Amat,
Your insight once again is always so meaningful. What would this blog do without your contribution everyday especially when no one asks your opinion but instead you just give us your words of wisdom anyways.

SaintsR4real ,
Archbishop Mitty is a traditional NoCal power and is tearing it up this year like no other. 16-3 with a legit schedule makes them as good as last year - so NV's performance was legit too. Easy does it... Freddy gave you some props in his comments as well. What did you see as a "cheap shot"?
Read back on what I wrote about "Karma". You don't want to get on her list now - do you?
Posted by: Joe Amt | April 14, 2009 3:58 PM
Freddy, Freddy, Freddy...
That was the biggest cheap shot I've seen to date.
Did you actually see the last Northview game to ASSUME the other team was legit.
The reason Northview is in the tournament is because they took CIF, right?
Then why can't it be possible that the team they played is not as good as they we're last year, just like Northview?
San Dimas is still the better team, until you compare them to teams YOU ACTUALLY KNOW!
I'm I wrong? PLEASE EXPLAIN, PLEASE!
Posted by: SaintsR4real | April 14, 2009 3:52 PM
No matter how you look at it, it's still early.
However, at this point, I don't think anyone here is about ready to question the chances of the Lancers becoming CIF Champions once again.
They will...
Joe Amat said it best recienly when he called out all those nay-sayers.
I guess winning has a tendency to shut down the bashers, but I do so miss those fools sometimes.
Anyway, I suppose that somehow it makes blogging less "colorfull" when you know your the best, and when they know it too.

I guess I have a convenient memory. I remember a lot of BA bashing last year but I don't recall all that coming from NV. I think under the circumstances being ranked 3rd is very fair. My problem last season was being ranked 2nd after beating almost all the schools in the top 10. Shoe- I think you have some latitant Viking anger you need to deal. with.
Posted by: anothervikingfan | April 14, 2009 2:04 PM
Vikingfan,
My post was only in jest.It has been so quiet on the blog I thought something of that nature would awaken the bloggers out there. If you recall most of the AMAT faithfull did agree with the pre-season ranking of NV at number one based on both of us winning CIF titles and the only measuring stick being your win against us in the Glendora Tournament. By the way I believe Fred does give very good coverage to the schools in our area but with a 2 man team it's a tough job, so maybe the top teams do get a little more than others but NV does get their fair share.
Posted by: AMAT 73 | April 14, 2009 12:28 PM
No, - what was actually said was -
1)"Fred saying he would NOT drop or punish BISHOP AMAT last year with their play during the National tournament. (He dropped us 1 spot)
2)"that same respect does not go NV's way. (it did)
3)Keep up the inconsistency, (it was 100% consistent)
Now what was said a year ago from the Viking faithful is that
1) the National was just another tournament
2) how much credit can Amat get for the teams they play - you don't choose the teams just the tournament
3) how good are those teams from out of the area/state anyway?
4) a loss is loss
5) Amat only went 2-2 in the tournament
6) etc, etc, etc
that being said;
Hanging with any team in the tourney into extra innings is an accomplishment. All of those teams are great programs. A blowout is one thing but 1 or 2 run loss, especially in extra inning loss could go either way and, really, probably could have been a win with a bounce or a call either way.
Unfortunately we all get lumped together and need to be accountable for our brethren. What one NV knucklehead says effects the perception of the rest of the fans. Just like some of the overzealous "Lancer Nation" fans cast a shadow on the rest of the followers.
Props to NV for the effort game 1 and good luck in the next 3.

It seems sarcasm is lost on the NV faithful!

Shoe On The Other Foot!
"well NV is now saying don't punish us for losing at the classic. Which is it?"
"Since you take care of us so well don't worry Fred we have your back. After all we do consider you an honorary LANCER."
NV is not saying anything. We lost an extra inning game. All the schools in the area should get equal respect from the Tribune.

Wilson beat CO last year and did nothing after that...this year they beat Bonito and will do nothing after that!

I didn't want to say anything, but .....

c.o.f.,
Funny I remember vividly how the NV poeple were saying just the opposite last year when Amat lost a couple of games at the classic, but now the shoe is on the other foot and with NV losing, well NV is now saying don't punish us for losing at the classic. Which is it?
Keep up the inconsistency NV, KEEP US ON OUR TOES.
Posted by: Shoe On The Other Foot! | April 14, 2009 11:06 AM
come on fred,
You must not remember TOO vividly. Fred is actually 100% consistent - right down to almost the exact wording...
"**Bishop Amat drops only one spot.** Going 2-2 in the National Classic is impressive for a Division V school. ..."
