Breaking News: Former Baldwin Park legend Tony Zane to join Bassett High School's coaching staff

| | Comments (15) |

I get this anonymous call from person at Bassett asking if I want to write about its new weight room, then he casually drops a bomb saying that former Baldwin Park coaching legend and and one of the Valley's greatest ever, Tony Zane, has agreed to become an assistant football coach at Bassett with head coach Leon Ward. I immediately called Ward, who confirmed it. "I believe I landed a nugget," Ward said laughing. "Tony and I have been good friends for a long time, I coached with him in some all-star games back in the day and we became really good friends. We stayed in touch and were out with the wives one night when one of the wives suggested that Tony should join me. Tony said he would, which I thought was him just being funny. But a couple days later I approached him about, he was serious and I was serious so here we are. What an incredible person to add to our staff. I'm thrilled."
Zane Bio: He spent 31 years at Baldwin Park, the last 13 as a head coach when he retired in 2002. During his tenure as an assistand and hea coach he won two CIF-SS championships, won 47 playoffs games, and 16 league titles. Welcome back coach.

I do enjoy the manner in which you have presented this particular problem plus it does indeed give me a lot of fodder for thought. Nonetheless, from what precisely I have experienced, I really trust as the actual feedback pile on that men and women continue to be on point and not start upon a tirade regarding the news of the day. Still, thank you for this superb piece and whilst I do not necessarily agree with the idea in totality, I value your viewpoint.

Just about all of whatever you say happens to be astonishingly legitimate and that makes me ponder why I hadn't looked at this in this light before. This particular article truly did switch the light on for me personally as far as this topic goes. However at this time there is one factor I am not really too cozy with so whilst I attempt to reconcile that with the central theme of your position, allow me see what the rest of the visitors have to say.Very well done.

Thank you Father Travers!!!!!! said:

No one made out better than Damien in this realignment. Father Travers has engineered the greatest comeback since Neil Diamond and Neil Sedaka! You might ask...who? EXACTLY !!!!

Okay no Leduc and no Pasquerrella? Wow...I can't believe Big lou and Bogan are too happy. Well Damein finally figured out a way to stop Pasy from going for the 3-peat !

Diamond Bar and Diamond Ranch will have to play each other...heck that's huge! Overall all the moves were perfect...for Damien at least!

Money talks and BS walks! this was a clear case of the Golden Rule:

He who has the Gold MAKES the rules!!!

Didn't Bassett put together a good team a few years ago? I coached across from them at the time at SLF and they did have athletes, a good coaching staff and a lot of discipline.

Every once in a while I would have my players sit and watch Bassett practice. I would tell them that coaching matters and believing in your coach requires two things: discipline and respect....and that's a two way street.

Both are earned. I also told them to look at all the players. Look at their actions after plays, after they finish their drills and after a coach talks to them. "Does the player buy in?" Are players giving their all and cheering on their team mates? Some times during drills a coach would single out a player for lack of effort....that's when things got interesting.

Most of the time, at least on that team...the player and coach were on the same page and practices intensified.

One day I asked the players..."How many of you are ready for that? How many of you will be on high school fields next year?"

Only one from my team played high school football for four years. He played at Bishop Amat and was a real special individual. The rest looked at those practices and wanted no part of that violence. In a way it made our team better because for 99% of these players this was the end of the football road...and they played that way and were eventual League Champions!

I've talked to Ward and asked a few friends to see if they were interested in helping out at Bassett. Most felt like some of these b;loggers. That's unfortunate. Good luck Coach Zane...at least I'll be pulling for Bassett knowing it can be done! The key for Basset is getting the parents involved....not on the field but helping out with getting their kids to go out.

I might be wrong but didn't that coach move on to Cantwell?

Bassett can have Pete Carroll and the Staff Coaching there and at best, lacing up their cleats will be all that they can do. Bassett will never win! Why? Well the AD is a young Guy who has no Athletic Power at the School. Poor Guy, all he does is schedule Busses and Coach Cross Country. My heart goes out to him. It's not his fault. He's a good Guy! However the problem is with the Admin Team. The Principal has appointed and Asst. Principal there to oversee Athletics. I believe Ronquillo is his name. An ex Hoops Coach there. He couldn't Coach Hoop. What does he know about overseeing Football? And with him overseeing Athletics, what does the AD do? Then you have this short Superintendent who sticks his nose into the Football program when he should let his Coaches just Coach. Administrators doing bad things there. Bassett could be good if they knew how to keep kids in the District. However they lose Kids to Bishop Amat, LP, Nogales, West Covina, Covina, Los Altos, Sierra Vista, and BP. How are they supposed to compete when they can't keep their kids in the District? The facilities are improving. But that alone isn't going to keep the kids. And how is this? There's a good Football Coach who Teaches PE on Campus and Coaches all the way out @ Long Beach Poly. He's an Offensive Guy and they can't even keep him on Campus. So good luck Bassett. You're getting an Old School Coach. But nothing will change.

Zane is certainly a big name. Hopefully has he still have the zest to compete? He won big during the 70's and early 80's at BP. The game has changed so much, has he kept up with all the changes? And most importantly, can he attract players to come to play for a school not well endowed in football prowess?

WOW! said:

This is awesome for Bassett. Good for them. Too bad Heggins didn't get him 1st. Bassett will at least be able to tie their shoes now.
