Baseball: Start thinking about All-Area teams

| | Comments (30) |

Since I asked the question in softball, I'm asking in baseball too. Start thinking of player of the year and first-team all area honorees. In all my years doing this, this could be the toughest of all. There are so many deserving players to choose from. You could come up with a solid first team all area's just from the Sierra League alone. Of course the CIF playoffs will have a lot to do with it, but who are your leading candidates to this point. Go ahead and fill in the blanks, and make your arguments.
Player of the year: ?
First team
Pitcher: (2); Catcher: (1); Infielders: (4); Outfielder: (3); Utility: (1)

For those of you who leave SS Thomas Jenson (San Dimas) off the list because you haven't seen him play. ok. But if you leave him off the list because you think the teams in the in the Valle Vista are weak, here are his combined stats (you can look it up) against the following teams;
Chino Hills, Los Altos, Bonita, Northview (3 games-including the two not entered so far), Nogalas, Glendora, St. Frances, and Beverly Hills.

B.A. = .488
AB's = 41
Hits = 20
2B = 8
Runs = 10
Rbi's= 8

He might be quiet and humble but he is good!

SS/ J. Mier you can teach people how to bat, but you can't teach arm strength.

In football we have an all star game or two during the off season. So it begg's the question. Is there an all star game for the baseball players as well ?

If so, where is the game played, and who would be the contestants ? Is it an East vs West type of a game, like the basketball game is, or is it a combination of best players from area schools ?

For what it's worth, I don't seem to recall that type of game being played last year, but maybe I missed it.

baseball savey said:

i believe leyland is the biggest impact in the area but .......Jiovanni Mier? the so called #1 shortstop prospect in baseball america might as well throw steven baltierra 's name in there the kid from wilson who made mier look silly in three at bats against him

SD Fan said:

Quality players with quality stats said to check out Tim Brookes' stats against quality teams. Looks like he is 3-3 with 1 RBI and 1 2B in the first game against Northview.

Either you are calling Northview a non quality team or your argument doesn't hold water.

Fun to watch said:

Anyone who leaves San Dimas Shortstop Thomas Jenson off the all area team isn't paying attention. He's a quite little guy who plays with the fire and heart of a giant. If your measured against a good team, how about a 5 for 5 outing against Northview?
Check out his rbi's as a lead off hitter. This kid is the real deal!

Pitchers ought to be easier than the position guys: First break them down by the W-L and then compare who they have beaten. You are going to have a handful of guys with nine or ten wins going into the playoffs. From there you simply see who beat the most competitive teams.

Catchers: We have a whole bunch of good ones locally. Anyone remember Jake Bailey? He has two years of All-League under his belt already and his offensive numbers look every bit as good as McClanahan's although pale a bit when compared to Mr. Leyland's figures. But then most player's do too.

IF: The year of the Shortstop? Mier, Pedroza, Jensen? We shall see.

OF: Smigelski is the only guy I see as a lock right now. Gelalich was hurt early so his O #'s seem soft but he is as good defensively as there is in the valley.

UT: Since this is gonna just be another Pitcher or maybe one of the Catchers rather than a real multi-position-multi-skilled player, go ahead and put your local fave on in here.

quality players with quality stats said:

Valle Vista league is not competitive at all! Yeah BP will make the playoffs, and that’s only because the other 3 schools are batting practice teams. The 3 teams have a combined winning total of 5…FIVE! BP is 6-4
San Dimas’ victory over Covina was like big brother beating up on little brother. Brookes’ 18 RBI’s…9 from Covina and 4 from Ganesha = 13 RBI’s from two very sub-par teams. Take a look at his stats against quality teams. I’m not picking at Brookes at all.
Select quality players with quality stats. Quality teams does not = Covina/Ganesha

I like list #2. I just can't believe we can have an all-area team and not include the following players:
McClanahan from Bishop Amat
Arnold from Northview
Calderaro from Bonita
Whitehouse from Damien

hey Chuck S - I don't know Tim Brookes, but do you actually have to call him a joke. you can disagree, but, really, does it make you feel all big and powerful to criticize a high school student. Grow up and be positive!!

Spartan Fan said:

List #2 looks decent, but any list that does not have Matt Whitehouse as pitcher or player of the year is flawed. He pithches in the toughest league in the SGV and is the best in the league.

GO Damien!!

skewed stats said:

The players on these lists that play in the Sierra League have it much tougher than anyone else. While other schools beat up on pitchers from Covina, Baldwin Park, Ganesha, and others, the Sierra League hitters are stuck facing Taylor Jimenez from Chino, Ryan Dunn from Chino Hills, Whitehouse at Damien, Plutko at Glendora, and Mathews at Diamond Bar. Even the #2 starters at these schools are very good. Therefore, we have to be careful when comparing the stats of area players.

chuck S said:

Tim Brooks? Is this a joke? 2 grand slams against Covina?? Covina people, isn't that like hitting BP? What else has Brooks done?

rf said:

Leyland..first team catcher.....NOT!
Yes, he can hit but the constant errors he makes behind the plate are not worthy of first team honors.

my recomendation said:

I like this most recent list but I would make Mathews the UT and replace Ponzo with Zuniga at P.

Will Jones said:

Matt Whitehouse player of the area. Has Matt lost a game and was a dropped strike from a perfect game.. Whenever Damien has their back against the wall, its Whitehouse to the rescue... Definite player of the area...

POST YOUR STATS said:

This would be much easier if all the coaches....cough cough...Coach Murphy...would post stats on maxpreps. I know...he thinks he is protecting top secret information. He's probably not the only one...they all should post stats!!

Nice Try (LOL) said:

Hey GO Saints

Production of Brookes and Gelalich doesn't warrant this list and with Ponzo's ERA over 4.00, he might be a second teamer.. Next level he's in big trouble

Get a clue!
