Championship Week: Charter Oak 6, Bonita 3

| | Comments (13) |

There was a time when Jake Bailey had solidified his spot in the Charter Oak High School baseball team's starting line-up do his ability behind the plate.
But Wednesday the senior catcher showed he can be quite effective either behind the dish, or beside it.
Bailey hit two home runs and went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and the Chargers took over first place in the Miramonte League with a 6-3 victory over visiting Bonita in a battle of two of the top teams in the area.
Charter Oak, also getting a complete game from freshman Travis Santiago, improved to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in league play. Bonita, which will get a second, and final shot at the Chargers on Friday, slipped to 14-5 and 6-3.

Charter Oak catcher Jake Bailey: "I just had a lucky day. We had a freshman pitcher going today and I was just trying to give him some support. I wouldn't say they were (mistake pitches). They were pretty good pitches. I got some good swings on them. (Bonita's Jason Plowman) is one of their aces, so I wouldn't say they were mistakes. They were pretty good pitches. I just got lucky."
Charter Oak coach Tom Quinley: "We've put (freshman pitcher Travis Santiago) in some tough situations this year. I said (earlier) that he grew up. Well, today, he really grew up. He threw one heckuva game today.
Bonita coach John Knott:
"You have to give (Bailey) all the credit. He had two quality at-bats when they needed them. Their entire line-up hit the ball off Plowman really well, and obviously Bailey had two big hits.
"Friday's going to determine our fate, our involvment in this league here. We're just going to have to hit the ball better and ultimately play a better game, and come out with a little better energy and fire."

Who won the Wilson vs Los Altos baseball game yesterday?

baseball spectator, have you been saying this all along? during the early part of the season everyone was talking about bonita as if they were giant killers and now you come on here and say that?

not saying you're wrong mind you, i know absolutely nothing about baseball, but it just seems to me odd that such a strong comment came out of a pretty united bearcat fan. are you a parent or just a baseball guy?

i was thinking, is there a trend with bonita's big three boys sports of fading down the stretch? not a slam, just a question. i know podley does an outstanding job with what he has, and so does the basketball coach, overall...do the teams fade down the stretch in league?

maybe bloggers who really have followed bonita over the years could answer the question without bagging on the kids or coaches...it just seems odd.

is there something in the water?

Gio is a great player, he has great instincts he will go far. There are other good players on the team who don't have those instincts and are just under coached. Bonita coaches need to take some responsibility, the boys are just not coached, the pitching coach has no idea what he is doing. All three just because you played "college" ball doesn't mean you know how to coach.

How about "the crack of the bat" when you get some good wood on a fastball.... Oh, those were the days !:?)

I was not there to hear or not hear on the hits... but, the new shock resistent bats don't make much if any noise. I miss the clean ping sound of the bat hitting the ball too!

It is because of the composite bats, once they are fully broken in they do not make any sound. They have a great solid feel but do not make the aluminum ping we all love and cherish.

Did anyone hear any noise coming from the bat of the catcher, (especially the second HR). It didn't make any noise, kind of interesting

Another example of how overrated Bonita is. they play in a joke of a league. Gio is the only "player" they have. CO is not much better.

We do have some of the best photographers in the business. Keith Birmingham does most sports, he's an award winner who regularly covers Major League Baseball and the NBA. Leo Jarzomb is an sports photographer from the Herald Examiner days and others like Raul Roa, our video camera man, gets some amazing shots too. Check out our galleries, I think they're keeping us in business.

Fred...you guys are on some kind of roll!

What a great picture. I'm sure most of us have been one of the three in the picture ate some time in our lives. All are tough. That is what makes sports such a great life learning experience.

How about all the imaginary "captions" that picture conjures up?

Your photo guys deserves a hand!

Great job!

Comments about "Thursday's other Big results" Pencil in wins when you play Ayala, That coach has successfully run the program into the ground. Win early in the season on talent win or loss late in the season depends on coaching.

Should be a good 2 games, but don't count out Wilson. Even if Bonita were to split, Wilson could split with them and spoil the party.
