SGV at its Best: Northview and San Dimas deliver another Classic, Vikings win in nine innings, 4-3

| | Comments (57) |

Northview, getting a solid outing from Ruben Ramirez, above, took a major step
towards a fourth Valle Vista League title with a 4-3 victory over San Dimas on Thursday.

Northview just continues to deliver, and now they are getting the production for the most unlikely of candidates.
Catcher and No. 9 hitter Arman Valenzuela hit Erik Salcido's first pitch for home run with one out in the ninth inning and the Vikings took a major step towards their fourth consecutive Valle Vista League title with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Saints in a battle of two of the top three teams the area on Thursday.
Northview, getting a solid 3 1/3 innings of relief from Eddie Pedroza, improved to 15-4 overall and took over first place with a 9-1 league record. San Dimas, which got a two-run home run from Matt Thrall to tie it at 3 in the sixth, slipped to 15-5, 9-2.
Northview closes the regular season with home-and-home series against Ganesha and Covina and a home game against Pomona.
Northview coach Darren Murphy: "You don't really expect your (No. 9) hitter to hit the walk-off homerun to win it, but we like storybook endings. I'm not much an author. I'll take it whatever way it happens.
"Sometimes, it's better to be the team (that does the catching), because when you do, you have all that momentum going. But I feel like we let a three-run lead go. I think for the most part, they had the momentum for about three or four innings. We were on our heels. We had to make some big plays, Eddie made some big pitches. But we escaped and got out of here, got out of here with a win. That's a heckuva team. They are going to make a run in the playoffs, too."
San Dimas coach Mike Regan (on his coach's interference in the eighth): "I don't have anything to say. I made a mistake. The kids played great and I screwed up."
Northview's Arman Valenzuela: I knew he was going to throw that fastball. I didn't think he was going to leave it up, because he got me with it the last (at-bat). But he came back with that same pitch, I put a good swing on it and let it go. I was trying to get a gap hit, but I got it up and got a (homerun)."

I have been telling YOU for years to YOUR FACE YOU SUCK!!!
Now I have to write it???????

SGVFAN said:

Wow,
These SD parents are brutal. If SD was to win then you would be loving Regan right now. But no, you are true front running parents who have to blame someone for losing a game. Last time I checked it was a team sport. Regan got caught up in the heat of the game and made a mistake as well, so what???? If you are truly not happy with him, then transfer before your kid starts playing there. I have been involved with SD for a few years now and the parents baby there kids and always make excuses. I didn't read anything bad when they were winning. PATHETIC, take the good with the bad and encourage the team to look forward to CIF and make a great run. Keep up the hard work Regan. The kids need it.

In an attempt to help mediate a bit.. in all fairness it appears that it was "zip code" that made the comment about "...THAT part of Covina-or Irwindale" in response to MapQuest writing about following the "...choke..." signs to San Dimas.

All I know is I wouldn't want to face Leyland from 60'6" or get in a close game with NV. You have to hand it to them they have battled back and won close games the past couple years against a bunch of teams.

To throw some props San Dimas way - "old school" style check out your alum Chris Pettit for the Angels AAA team in Salt Lake. Hitting over .400 with a ton of extra base hits. Good to see the valley movin' on up!

oh so now you want us to be good sports and say something good about both teams, well the games were something else, a true display of high school athletes giving it their all and fighting until the last out. Whether your actions are warranted or not, or those of the nv fans as well, you my friend were still out of place in many of the comments left below. Bringing up the demographics of where people live in the "other side of covina-irwindale" who gives you the right to judge the lives of others? Are you a higher power my friend? Because last time I checked this is a high school sports blog and not a blog about who lives where and what their financial or living situation might consist of. So get off the nv fans' backs for being a supportive community and reflect on your last few posts. Remember after the first game of the series where SD fans were doing the same exact thing, if you plan to talk smack be prepared to back it up and that is what NV did, they returned the favor. Hope your fun was worth it.

OMG, Northview, get over yourselves!
If you can't have some fun here than get out! Say something funny, learn how to react without becoming a baby.
I can only offer a free chance to laugh at yourself for so long.
Stop watching Dr. Phil.
Congratulations to the, soon to be Valle Vista League Champion, Northview baseball team.
Congratulation To the Saints for never giving up and Giving everything they had.
I think both teams will represent our league well in CIF.
Now, Anonymously, you can have the last word but show some class, like your team does, and say something positive about the teams. (both of them). I hope your up to that challenge.

Anonymously said:

SI;

What the h*ll is your problem? Are you the type of person who has to have the last word? Here you are still hanging around this old article trying to input your IQ. Do us all favor and quit checking our spelling, because it looks ridiculous. Hey genius why don't you look up the word swept, choked. Si i believe JOE AMAT, was referring to your comment about spelling.

Si and what does that suppose to mean"But your still a Northview fan" Oh yes like San Dimas high is all that better. Get out here with that silly little jingle.

Si said:

To "Very proud of Northview",

Why does every northview fan come on and resort to name calling?
And you call yourself an adult?

I am not bitter about loosing (it's a baseball game), they were great games by great players, and I didn't see any losers. The teams both teams will face in CIF should be worried.
If you can't see the humor in some, (SOME), of the comments being written then your missing something in your life.

Very proud of Northview said:

SI,
Take your bitter pill and choke on it. I am a Northview mom and could not be more proud. I wouldn't mind matching my house up with your house. Most of us, here in Covina, have very little shame about anything in Covina. Wouldn't you say we all have our good and bad? Stop the hate, you are one bitter fool. I am hoping just a dumb kid that doesn't know any better - but Lord help you if you are adult on here acting this way.

Si said:

To Mapquest,

Murphy, is that you?
Not a bad take, did your mom help you write it?
To all readers,(that leaves out Anonymously),
Mapquest's true colors came out in the last line,
Class act.
Like I said before, your team may have won, and they are great, but your still a Northview fan.

zip code said:

The jokes on you. At the end of the day when you follow those signs, we'll still live be San Dimas and you'll be in THAT part of Covina-or Irwindale.

Mapquest said:

Si,
First, kudos to you for coming on here after getting broomed last week. "Broomed" means swept if it's not in your glossary of blogging terms. Second, we don't seem to have trouble over at Northview getting to you. We just follow the "Caution: San Dimas Baseball Team about to Choke Again" signs along cypress and covina blvd. and leads right to your field. Can't say much when we've come to your place two years in a row with the league title on the line and you guys winning late in the game and we've won. Take a tip, go f*** yourself.

To Anonymously,
Notice in my comment to you I didn't have to resort to name calling? And the San Dimas fans have no class?
(by the way, the "are" in your comment should be "our", and I'm the moron?), It's easy to tell a Northview grad. That's why you live in Covina. If your going to come in against me, you better have some good takes or I'm going to embarrass you.
I'd tell you where to find me but from your writing I can tell you wouldn't be able to follow the directions.
Hey...You guy's think Murphy is so smart, maybe he could drive you. Oh wait...Murphy?...Drive?...a car?...maybe that's not a good idea after all. Oh well, bring it on!

Wow!!! What a great week of local baseball. I was privileged to be at both Northview vs San Dimas games this week.
The outstanding play and competitiveness of both teams really showed in both games. The fact that during both games when one team took a lead the other always came back. Both games going into extra innings just shows how close these two programs are.
My hat is off to both teams.

keep hitting the slabs of meat that someone referred to earlier from albertos.

Lets be honest here -- NV and SD is a heated well-deserved rivalry. Heated being the key word, let's count the one run, last minute, edge of your seat games and that is a tribute to both teams, their coaches, and their fans! I have been to enough of both teams games and both sets of fans get into it. There are loud, obnoxious fans on both sides. That is baseball - what can you do? Very few sports allow such close proximty to the game and players. Keep it real and in perspective, it's a game and these fans are passionate and support their team. It's a good thing right?
GOOD LUCK VIKINGS -- PLAY HARD AND DO WHAT YOU DO BEST.

chill out... Damien knows they got lucky today but there were two games this year where they had the same thing happen to them... just like last week vs Glendora.... They took the loss well and finally got one to go their way... so they got theirs back.. they know they have a lot of work ahead of them to win league and they arent celebrating anything till the last game of the year.

Frank C said:

Coaching matters...Damien is playing inspired ball and the players "know the difference"! Maybe things are coming around! Talked to a few Damien Baseball Dads and everyone loves this guy plus feel lucky to have Gross.

Big ups to Mark Garcia. Great kid, very unassuming but what a complete competitor! Best of luck down the stretch...can they still maybe win league?

Diamond Bar comes to Damien next week so that's going to be crazy!!!!!

Damien Wins!!

Damien 6 vs Ayala 5

It wasn't pretty but we will take it. Down 4-5 at the top of the seventh Damien never gave up and came up big with two runs to seal the deal. Ayala ran out of gas in the bottom of the seventh and that was it. Garcia (4 innings)and Guillen (3 innings) shared the mound and came away with a big win. Leyva coached a helluva game. Two more tough weeks to go. Looks like we finally got a little love from CIF, Div 2-#8. Great job boys! Stay healthy and God Bless.

GO Damien!!

PS-Someone please post the Glendora score. I know Dbar lost to Chino this afternoon, but I don't have a score.

What a game! All respect in the world to the players on both teams. Congratulations to the Northview Vikings and San Dimas for showing the San Gabriel Valley some of the best ballgames any fan could every hope to see.

There were very few mistakes made and I'm hard pressed to even see any serious weakness on either team from the pitching to the defense to the batting.

These two team match up very well and we're all lucky to get the chance to watch them play.

After spending the last 2 weeks in europe nice to return home and watch some high school baseball. Today I went to the CBL game REV vs #2 ranked Yucaipa in Division 2. Yucaipa decided to start p-3b Matt Davidson(USC) who this year was the closer after starting for 3 years. REV had lhp Jeremy Perez. With the wind blowing out Yucaipa #3 hitter Matt Marnati hit a 2 run home run giving Yucaipa a 2 run lead. Later in the game REV clean up hitter cf Ryan Boeger tied the game with a 2 run hr. With the score tied at 5-5 Yucaipa came up in the bottom of the sixth and scored 4 unearned runs with REV dropping throws at 1b,2b,3b in the inning. Big hit was Manarti's and Tyjuan Walker doubles. Lhp Frankie Martin (CSF) closed out the win for Yucaipa.
The last 2 years the sierra league has been matched with the CBL. 2 years ago REV beat Redlands 4-1,and last year Yucaipa beat Ayala.

Good luck today though. I know it is going to be a good battle.

You go boy. It's unfortunate that it was not mentioned by the staff but one of the nice things about the blog is input on very important meets , games and so forth can be posted by faithful fans of events at these schools. All SGV teams are just as important as any other inspite of what some knuckleheads think out there. It seems brawler and jcaz subscribe to the same school of thought.

Frank C said:

Kudos to AZTEC PRIDE....YOU DO YOUR SCREEN NAME PROUD.

Good luck in today's meet. The best high school events are the ones with long histories of competition. When a Championship is involved it's always worth mentioning. Winning a Championship is forever! There are no Championship with a small "C"...i hope you understand that you did your community and this blog a favor by sharing this with all of us.

It is unfortunate that budget cuts and maybe a little "star gazing' has keep some schools from the forefront...all athletes should be given their due for the mere fact that they are willing to put themselves out there.

What a great gesture on your part to schedule a day off to cheer on your team...I hope you enjoy a wonderful meet and everyone has a blast!

And may the best team win!!!!!

So let me tell YOU son, (I CARE!!!) and I would like to use better words than that, but i'm going to keep it clean.

AZTEC PRIDE said:

Fred;

Not to barge in on this page, but I thought you should know that AZUSA & La Puente have a track meet, and the LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP is on the line. Both track teams are undefeated, and today the winner of the meet will win the league. I heard La Puente has a very fast sprinter in the 100m so this should be a great meet.

Last year it also came down to the wire, and AZUSA only won by several points and won the league title, so i'm sure La Puente wants a little payback!

Just saw Murphy leaving Albertos. He is 8-0 when he eats there for lunch this year.

Word is Regan is sticking with T-Bell. Record is 4-4. But that's all they got in San Dimas. I feel bad for the poor guy. Good luck with that Regan.

Murphy had his boys at the back of Albertos beating the crap out of sides of beef. His assistant, the short guy that can't keep his mouth shut (AKA Poly) looked on with a burrito in his mouth. Definetly going to be a Rocky vs. Drago rematch.

Murphy, Cut me Mick. :)
