Could a 16-game season be next?

Could there be a 16-game football season? Yes, and sooner than you think. Read what the Orange County Register's Steve Fryer has to say.

Unfortunately this is more about "the budget" than anything. The CIF's budget. As in most of their decisions... follow the money. Looks at playoff games as their "cash cow" - as THAT is when they make their money. The split is phenomenal and they take 60% of the sectional playoffs and maybe even more of the "bowl games". Now, in reality, if the CIF makes more money to cover operating expenses then that is less money they have to charge the schools for membership - so in a roundabout way it helps the schools too. But adding that many WEEKS is outrageous. It's not like the basketball playoffs where you can play 4 or 5 games and get through the entire regional in 1 week.

Multi-sports athletes are going to have to make some hard decisions about what sport to emphasize with conflicts between football and others as schedules start to really overlap. May have an impact on budgets, too.

I love football and I have seen what a state playoff system can mean in Ohio and Texas, but 16 games is a bit of a stretch. With divisions based on size and ability it works well. Some schools routinely dominate from time to time, but that happens now anyway. Won't make much difference for most schools except those that mount championship seasons, but will make for some interesting chat.

while CA is trying to get a 16 game season, this school's getting a 0 game season http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=932536 check out the link. Times are are getting tough and it's pretty sad.

I like it the better we can get at having an entire state playoff the better, although it's hard it will be great for the fans, and I'm the sure the players would love it.

Five years too late...

That's a great idea, and I have mentioned that it is something that we need. Perhaps you and anyone else can email our management and share your concerns.

Too many games for the kids. I don't like it. What I did like was the disclaimer at the bottom of the article. Here: "From the editor: Many of you have expressed concerns about some of the harsh anonymous comments from readers. To remedy that, we are introducing new features. . . Once you fill out a simple form and leave a verifiable e-mail address, you can set up your profile page. It will display all of your contributions and allow you to track issues and easily connect with others. We want our site to be a place where people discuss and debate ideas that foster stronger communities. We built this for you. Please take care of it. Tolerate broad thinking, but take action against obscene or hateful material. Make it a credible and safe place worth preserving and sharing."

Is this something you can do here Fred? Seems like a good way to go.
