Duarte feeling fallout from Crutchfield firing
By Fred J. Robledo
Duarte High School athletic director Robyn Garcia confirmed on Monday that four varsity football players from the 2008 football season have left school, including highly touted senior-to-be running back Jordan Canada, a first-team Montview League selection as a junior. Canada, a 5-foot-10, 160-pounder, rushed for 1,956 yards and 19 touchdowns, averaging 195 yards for the Falcons during an injury-plagued junior season in which he missed three games. Canada began taking classes at South Hills High School last week along with his younger brother Jamie Canada, a talented running back/wide receiver and defensive back who made the Falcons' varsity team as a freshman. Sophomore linebacker Wardell Crutchfield Jr., the son of former Falcons coach Wardell Crutchfield, and sophomore quarterback Demetrius Jackson left earlier this year for Baldwin Park, Braves athletic director Mike Zimmerman confirmed.

Garcia doesn't know if there are more football players making plans to leave the school, but it appears the departing players were unhappy with the firing of Crutchfield, who was removed as coach by principal Eric Barba in January but remains there as a teacher.
Former Pasadena Star-News coach of the year Tip Sanders, who revived programs at Marshall and Blair high schools, has been hired to take over at Duarte.
There have been rumors that Wardell Crutchfield will become an assistant coach at Baldwin Park, but Zimmerman said he is not on staff at the moment.
"It hasn't reached that point," Zimmerman said of Crutchfield joining coach James Heggins' staff.
The four players are enrolled in new schools, but It will be up to the CIF-Southern Section approval process to determine whether the departing players become eligible to play football this fall. Scout.Com, a popular recruiting Web site, already lists Jordan Canada as a player from South Hills.
"It's very concerning," Garcia said. "I understand when a new coach comes in there are issues, but I don't think they (players leaving) are making a good decision.
"They don't understand what they're getting themselves into. There is no guarantee they will be able to play." Not only are the Canada brothers at South Hills, but former South El Monte junior running back/defensive back Neiko Padilla also is taking classes at South Hills.
Padilla left after longtime Eagles coach Erick Escamilla resigned. Former La Puente coach Ray Hernandez now is coaching at South El Monte. For the players to become eligible, they will have to either apply for a hardship or prove they have a valid change of address.
Duarte could opt to challenge the transfers through CIF by citing the players left for "athletically motivated" reasons, but Garcia said that decision hasn't been made yet.
Zimmerman said Crutchfield and Jackson had 4.0 grade-point averages on their transcripts and is working toward their athletic eligibility. "We're dealing with CIF and Duarte," Zimmerman said. "We want to make sure all the paperwork is handled properly."

Why not allow kids to transfer into successful programs? It gives the kid a chance to see if he can succeed within a successful program. Many kids transfer into good programs but subsequently get cut from or leave the successful program because they are not suited for it. Many other kids transfer and are finally in an environment that allows them to more fully develop. If we do not afford those students the option, then they will never know if they can be successful within a good program.
Are we bound to our employers? We are free to seek greener pastures.

the kid that isn't as strong in the classroom as on the field is at a disadvantage, I agree that if a kid doesn't have the tools to succeed in the classroom then he won't last through college anyway but if the kid's skills can pay for his education why shouldn't we let them, and if a coach/school has better connections to colleges then why not move them--alot of high school administrations only care about this season and the next at their school, not about the Athlete after they are graduated.

Amat 73,
most times the best athletic schools also have the better academics. Especially in SGV discussions. Usually they are better overall environments period.

nokidleftbehind,
Just where does the quality of high school education fall into your theory .Is it second to the quality of the sports program and coach or futher down the list. What good is the scholarship going to be if the kid dosen't have the tools to succeed in the classroom unless you plan for them to play the 1 or 2 years in college then on to the pros. I will give you a clue to a great connection to any college. High SAT and GPA will open the door to any college and also to a ton of money out there thru grants and scholarships. If that student is also a top athlete well that opens the door even more . Maybe I am wrong about you but after reading your post about even moving to improve the situation I don't think I am.
Posted by: AMAT 73 | April 9, 2009 9:13 AM
tell ya what--when there is a top notch athlete and no monetary means for the family to put the kid through college, my kid will go to the best school with the best program to get him to college. So if Coach A leaves a program and I'm not comfortable with Coach B doing what's best for my athlete that needs the connections to get into college, he's going to another school. Bottom line. You say college scouts will find stellar athletes no matter where they play--you're dead wrong. Stellar athletes play for stellar coaches that have great programs and the connections. If my kid wants to change schools we will move or do whatever-- his skills are his ticket. Widowed Mom that didn't plan ahead for college will sell her soul if her kid gets an opportunity ---CIF shouldn't take that away unless they want to fork over tuition..you say rules are rules...no one knows the whole truth any story unless it's your own --you can keep guessing ... all you want.

Man you guys underestimate parents and players savvy. There are so many reasons you can declare a hardship. It could stem from childcare to safety. Also if that does not work claim religion and go private. I not saying that should be done, but it gets done. In addition, if you have the means to move or hire a good attorney they can find a way. I saw a recent case, where the attorney got a kids cleared by the judge. On a personal note, I say let kids transfer as long as it is not in the same league. This would get rid of some of the advantages the private schools have now.
I wish Coach Crutchfield the best. He is a little over the top, but he got results. He won games and helped kids get scholarships (not just Duarte kids either).

Hello everyone. I just wanted to pass this note along to all underclassman football players.
Nike is hosting two football combines the next two weeks. The first one is this Saturday at LA Southwestern College and we are scheduled to begin at 9:00 A.M.
If players can't make it this Saturday, the other Nike combine for area players to go to is next Saturday at Veterans Stadium on the campus on Long Beach City College. Again, we are scheduled to start at 9:00 A.M.
Players will be asked to run the 40 yard dash, the 20 yard shuttle, do the vertical jump and do a powerball throw.
The combine is free to all underclassman and all the player has to do is sign up online on the football recruiting page at espn.com.
If you sign up online, your card will be ready at registration and you'll be able to go early. If you sign up at the event, you'll be asked to wait until the end of the day.
I hope to see many of you from the area this Saturday or next Saturday.

Its definitely sad listening to all the adults cry and moan when the only ones who are suffering are the children. I wonder why i never read any blogs from the ones that are being spoken about. The only ones that need investigating are the adults. Everyone wants to b heard but knowone is listening. No matter how educated you are about the facts, does that seem to matter? I only feel bad for these young ones trying to figure things out when there parents and mentors are just as confused. When it comes to our children dont make it personal!!

double standard
How many schools have your kids been to? 3, right? Are you trying to find a baseball program where they could get some playing time or looking for a quality education? get real.. and use spell check! "Educated" speaks the truth.

Educated..
Get off the bottle. Most kids involved in sports come from educated back ground.,or familys that are doers. If your ashamed to live in SGV don't let the door hit you in the @ss.,your free to go.Your pseudo belief that all transfers pertain to athletic gain.,reflect your ignorance to the subject.,Its better to stay quit, and be thought fool.,than to speak and remove all doubt..!!

bravo educated...you said it perfectly!

This is ridiculous that public education has come down to this. I am ashamed of the parents who move their kids to other schools only to focus on athletics. Start teaching your kids some life skills, how to deal with adversity, how to overcome challenges. Don't just walk away from a problem, be a part of the solution. Perhaps your children will be better off in this world if they learn some science, math, and physics, so that they can get a well paying job of the future. Our future is doomed because of lazy parents, who cannot set boundaries, and think that there kids are going to get a scholarship if they play somewhere else. If your kids are as good as you think, then they would be successful in any program that they play in. I am saddened to be from the San Gabriel valley, as the community members (high school parents) are losing sight of what is truly important.

Football fan what fact was misleading? Were eses coming to the school looking for individual blacks? And wasnt all those individual blacks on the team? I have 2 nephews at DHS, 1 at Northview and I have had to go to the school on numerous occassions so miss me with your the administration made it safe bullshit. They just put the campus on lockdown about a month ago on a friday because I picked my nephew up from Northview and was told why it happened. lol @ the colored card there may be 10-15 black males at DHS total wheres the card? The students talk about not liking to go to the bathrooms alone. A couple that are at Monrovia now just had a conversation with a group of adults about the safety and scholastic differences between the 2.
I dont work for CIF I didnt say these kids should be declared eligible because of the ongoing violence in and around the school, I said it is also one of the reasons "besides" Crutchfield that students are transferring (Its not just athletes and it didnt start this year) I never stated students should be declared eligible anywhere because of whatever, I have personal first hand experience as to why some are tranferring and thats what I was saying. It's not just a mass exodus due to Crutchfield. Duarte players transferring or going other places has gone on long before Crutchfield came around.
And to Bravetown it isnt an ese issue its a Duarte issue.

Rules,
I'm not sayiing it's right - just telling you how it is at the office. As I said before - when it comes to a decision... follow the money. Do they want to be liable if something were to happen? If CIF gets a hardship claiming a kid is unsafe it is passed through rather quickly for the reasons written before.
And your examples from the City Section prove it even more so. Transfers in the city is possibly even more rampant. That hardship waiver is all over the place - which is what has allowed Taft and Westchester (deemed to be in "safer" areas) to clean up in the transfer pool with athletes coming from other areas. There are times when the schools will encourage (or even force) a kid to transfer and the CIF -LA section is required to grant eligibility. Remember - all the City Section schools are in the same school district - so it is an "intra-district transfer" ... no different than going from Northview to South Hills or vice-versa within CVUSD.
And your question earlier about renting is an interesting one that everyone knows about South Hills, specifically. They have possibly the best demographic mix of home ownership/rental units and a mix of very wealthy families than any school in the area. Because of the high density of rental units East of Citrus from the 10 Fwy (and 1 block south) to San Bernardino Rd. that are in the SHHS attendance area a lot of renters find it pretty easy to find a very affordable place to move into.
The transfer rules that require a change of address really benefit the very wealthy that can buy another place and move or the month-to-month renter that can up and move without much difficulty. Unfortunately, the middle class family is really strapped by that restriction.
That's just the way it is.

Theres ball players @ Wesco that can't play do to CIF so called rules. One is a senior with 3.5 gpa but who cares. We keep hearing the same old bulls#!+..you should of thougth about your move., #@!~you rules.,.The damage is done for my boys.and cif trys to put it on parents looking out for there kids. I have no personel promblems with these kids moving from Duarte HS to were ever. But rules are rules and if they let these guys play var.. CIF should over turn there ruling on the Diaz bros. The Shirly kid and any other kid that that had there dreams yanked out from under them., Hail the mighty rules..To all you rule keepers kiss my @ss.,.,.,!!!

So What Joe Amat and SGV Pride are saying here is open enrollment to all that live in unsafe neighnorhoods. East L.A / Hawaiian Gardens/ So. Central L.A. pack your bags you can now enroll at SHHS for football with no ramifications coming from CIF If you moved to the SH neighborhood. It would open a swinging door for all areas in L.A.including city kids coming to CIF schools and claiming there is a gang infestation at there school so they need to transfer to a safer place to play. What does that say about the kids from Jordan or Crenshaw or Fairfax?. Joe of all people you know better then that.
Posted by: Rules | April 7, 2009 4:07 PM
sgvpride - you're right... *documented* safety concerns may be the simplest recognized hardship approved by the CIF office. It's "almost" an automatic... IF it's documented and there is some verifiable paper trail. They don't want to be caught in the backlash if they refuse a hardship transfer and ultimately (God forbid) something were to occur if the student/athlete stayed.

Ok Fred,
It is a long way to drive or get dropped off for school every morning coming from the Duarte area because you know they are not moving from Duarte to South Hills. To:SGV Pride, It has become a safety issue. Those kids and their families that are transfering to the SH area (aledgedly)Chose to live in Duarte and will continue to live there. If they own their property. 1) Very tough to Sell right now and 2) If they do sell what makes you think they can afford a home in So. Hills..big Differance in property Values. This is all Athletically Motivated and you play the safety card.? Now lets go to the Rent Card.Same thing as the sell card. It is all BS, sure the players did not like the coach firing or the coach that will take over but to go from Duarte to SH? whats wrong with Arcadia, St. Francis, Rosemead, Temple City???? SH? someone was promised something.????CIF should block this,,, SH has been doing this for too many years now because they cannot win with their own homegrown kids.
Posted by: Rules | April 7, 2009 2:53 PM
sgvpride get your facts straight! You are out of your mind! Black students are safe at Duarte HIgh. Duarte High is very safe...try again. Hardship for black students, that isn't going to fly. There is no issue at Duarte High School what so ever and the new administration is the reason for it, they have made the campus safe. Stop pointing the finger at the administartion and stop playing the colored card. If the players transfers to SH, of course it is athletically motivated. Don't fool yourself, CIF knows whats up and are keeping an eye on certain schools. Get your facts straight and by the way I asked my facts person, there has not been a lock down but one this year and it wasn't because of a gun.

Someone tell me if i am right.. I was told that the soon to be senior will be able to play because it is it will be his senior year. But that the 2 sophmores that transferred to baldwin park will be able to play their first year. is that true?
Posted by: a fan | April 7, 2009 1:49 PM
SGVPRIDE, SO THE ANSWER IS TO MOVE TO BALDWIN PARK, A AREA WITH ALOT OF "ESAYS" AT THAT SCHOOL. HMMM SOUNDS FISHY TO ME.

Amat is not in the same recruiting league as South Hills and Charter Oak. 99% home grown. Two Transfers in whole program. None at Semester.
Posted by: Don't Fred | April 7, 2009 1:20 PM
The transfer issue is an interesting one because of all the factors involved. I agree that safety should be the number one reason for any kid to transfer but doesn't kids transfering open up a lot of problems? What's to stop other talented kids from other schools from just going to CO,SH, or Amat just because they don't like a coach or they arent playing for a winning program? I for one have a lot more respect for any kid who sticks with a program that isnt winning and I would be willing to bet he learns better life lessons than a kid who transfers. What are we teaching kids to just bail when things don't go your way? I understand the flip side of looking out for your children but allowing a lot of transfers is a bad idea.
I for one do like the college rule of making a kid sit out one year if he or she transfers. This will make parents look long and hard before making the decision. Also before a kid gets into HS or even college it's the parents that should be doing the homework on what best school to send their kid. This way many of these problems can be avoided.
Posted by: King Stud | April 7, 2009 1:17 PM
Exactly Fred. And Demetrius Jackson lives with Crutchfield, has for over a year. Both he and Crutchs son have 4.0's. The transfer situation also relates to the ongoing violence on and around the campus. It isnt really safe for the handful of male black students who have to deal with the eses from Mt. Olive continuation coming down daily with nothing done by the administration. Ask how many times the campus has been put on lockdown in the last few months due to students/non-students with guns.
And the school is definately going to try and get everyone who transferred deemed ineligible because they have already sent letters and made phone calls declaring them trouble makers etc, regardless of their behavior or lack of troublemaking record. The administration has dropped the ball all the way around on this issue, from the firing (which obviously was to get the Principals friend on board, even though that backfired because of the hoopla) to the way they are now handling the transfers. When all is said and done, I had a family member transfer who plays move more for safety reasons than anything else. If you're a black male at DHS you have a hardship I would never let my son attend and I am a graduate.
Posted by: sgvpride | April 7, 2009 12:00 PM
You're reading too much into it, every school with a winning tradition will get there share of transfers. Other schools get transfers too, you just don't hear about them because the players aren't as high profile, so the impact isn't as big.
Posted by: FredJ | April 7, 2009 11:32 AM
Fred there are other well played football schools over by that part of town or even west of there that they can transfer to. It just seems odd that SH and CO keep getting these players from that side of town. There has to be some pipeline going on there. I understand CO and SH have done well in their football programs but they upgrade every year from that area??? Bishop Amat is a private so I would not include them in here.
Posted by: Rules are Rules | April 7, 2009 11:23 AM
Rules are rules, there is no tampering that I can see. These players left because of the coaching situation with their coach being fired. Players' families will then look for good situations, it happens all the time. If you're going to move your kid, you're going to look for the best situation, it's as simple as that. It's easy to call out Bishop Amat, Charter Oak and South Hills, but these are winning traditions with great coaching staff's, that's why players flock to those schools when they're unhappy where they're at. Why is that so hard to understand?
Posted by: FredJ | April 7, 2009 10:21 AM
I would stick by the Jacob Shirley ruling and not let these kids play until they have sat a year. We know that it is athletically Motivated and I would not doubt the connection that exisits with Bogan or some of his Goonba's talking to these kids knowing there were problems going on over at Duarte and SEM. CIF blocked Shirley's move so now I think it is important to block these transfers to play ball. CIF started a precedents with Shirley now stay consistant. Sure all cases are different and have their own twists to them but in this case, SHHS? We seen how they munipulated the Dorian Wells case from Monrovia and now this? Principal North and Bogan should be investigated by CIF for tampering. I say they sit one year.
Posted by: Rules are Rules | April 7, 2009 9:33 AM
If the kids have physically moved, there is nothing anyone can say. Happens all the time, so CIF is not going to fight a battle over 2 small schools in the SGV.
As for Crutch's kid who went to Baldwin Park, he can easily claim a hardship due to the situation with that is going on with his dad at Duarte.
Posted by: mrman1 | April 7, 2009 9:18 AM
There is no Football Program at Duarte. There were problems with Coach Crutchfield, but the current issues have to do with the adminsitration, and their choice of Tip Saunders as the Head Football Coach.
They had 28 players on the roster at the end of the 2008 Season. They had NO FRESHMAN TEAM, thus what they have for the roster is what they have, unless the new coach can go back into the campus and self recruit from the athletes who chose not to play.
Posted by: Cougar | April 7, 2009 9:16 AM
Kids transfer because of sports all the time and become eligible. Remember all those Bishop Amat kids who left two years ago. They were eligible at their new schools. This isn't a case of "undue influence," these kids are leaving because they're unhappy about the firing of their coach. I have no problem with what they're doing, and if I'm being honest, if their families move and can prove it, I say let them play.
Posted by: FredJ | April 7, 2009 9:16 AM
Hey Fred you know that these kids are not going to be eligible. It is obvious that they have transfered because of sports and that is a no-no. Fred you said that kids should be allowed to transfer to any school they want to, okay if that is the case then CIF should follow the ncaa rule with a player having to sit for a year no matter if you move or not.

FRED, CAN U OR SOMEONE WHO KNOWS, PLEASE ELABORATE THE INCOMING FRESHMAN TRANSFER RULE AND A REGULAR TRANSFER RULE. THANKS...

What strikes me about this story is that Crutchfield's son has a 4.0 GPA. That means as a father he's doing something right. Maybe the new principal didn't like his tough love methods, but hasn't he got other kids into four year colleges. You may not like his style or his arrogance, but the kids loved him, and he loved those kids. Given the outside distractions, you need tough love in this area. This principal made a horrible decision, and I don't blame the players for leaving. Not because they do not like Tip, but because they can't support a principal who makes this knee-jerk reaction and for what?
Posted by: Falconfollower | April 7, 2009 7:49 AM
Next years football season is going to be explosive all the way around.
We have a couple of great match ups here in the San Gabriel valley with St Bonnie coming to Kiefer stadium, and with South Hills hosting Tesoro.
However, I have to say that for me, the most intriguing thing will be how well Baldwin Park does this upcoming season if both of these two transfers are deemed eligible to play for them.
Last years Braves team had allot of issues with the quarterback position and as a result, their offense sputtered and fell apart especial if the opponent had a halfway decent defense out on the field.
Perhaps next years edition will be a little bit better, given the fact that there may be at least three new faces (including the coach) over on their sidelines next year.
We’ll see.
Posted by: jcaz | April 6, 2009 11:55 PM
Did they think anything less would happen? Did they not think the flood of football players would leave as soon as Crutch was fired? Well this new principal will either be considered a genius for the firing or he will be fired himself in less than 2 years for messing up a good football program that brought pride to the community and also one that got kids into college on scholarships.
You might hate Crutch's on the field antics and his sometimes foolish mouth, but you can not question is love for those kids and all the help he given out since he started coaching way back at Pomona. DuRock lost a valuable part of their community when Crutch got fired. He will be missed by everyone in the Duarte area
