If you took all the politics out and let me do it, realignment wouldn't be hard at all

| | Comments (28) |

Principals are no different than politicians, they vote along party lines. That is why this process was more difficult than it should be. If the principals left the realignment in the hands of your favorite sportswriter, you would get rid of all the politics and it would like this, which makes sense from a competitive, geographical, financial, and common-sense standpoint. It's very simple really, move Chino Hills to the Baseline. Glendora and Diamond Ranch go to the Sierra. This makes the Miramonte and Sierra a six-team league. Send Claremont to the Mt. Baldy, which like the Montview, would be a competitive eight-team league. You tell me, how does this not make the most sense?

Baseline League - Alta Loma, Etiwanda, Chino Hills, Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland
Sierra League - Ayala, Charter Oak, Glendora, Diamond Ranch, Damien/St. Lucy's, South Hills
Miramonte/San Antonio League - Bonita, Diamond Bar, Los Altos, Rowland, Walnut, West Covina
Mt. Baldy League - Chaffey, Chino, Colony, Don Lugo, Garey, Montclair, Ontario, Claremont
Valle Vista League - Baldwin Park, Covina, Nogales, Northview, Pomona, San Dimas, Wilson
Montview League - Azusa, Bassett, Duarte, Ganesha, Gladstone, La Puente, Sierra Vista, Workman

Clueless.

I think most schools would be good if they kept the athletes that were in their district. I dont honestly beleive their is anything special about Damien's academic and athletic staff that makes the kids anymore special than the fact that Damien does advertise open enrollment, which i beleive is baiting! I think Taylor Herrera would have been just as fast whether he was at Damien or Bonita Hs.

Damien and St. Lucy belong in the Catholic Athletic Association. Bottom line they should be in the same league with Amat for all sports.

You really are a wonder. Go run along and tell big daddy Fred that the other posters won't play nice with you. Fact is you are the first to bash and bring people down. Yet one word of criticism toward your 'informed' opinion and you email to Fred for protection. You are a coward and an embarrassment to the Damien community.

Frank C said:

What was negative about my post? The original one?

Be specific and back it up with substance and then maybe the posts won't degenerate so quickly?

Matter of fact which paragragh has anything but glowing comments about Aram, Gano, our Freshmen, the assistant coaches, Bubba and Damien overall appeal to parents based on academics and safety.

My comments about Tom Jr?John are well documented by his record, my comments about Chavez I've actually talked to him when he came over to tell me and I congratulated him. Like I said I wished him well. He nutted up and wanted the job, talked to Gano, was interviewed.. has a resume of Varsity level experience but lacked HC time! These are precarious times for Spartan Football after last year. What's wrong with saying that if I already told Chavez myself. Ask him! He said..."I KNOW I'm ready!"...hey how is that telling tales out of school?

As far as Tom Sr. After a player almost broke his back and had to spend time in an Emergency room after hitting that cart and had to have his parents meet him at the Hospital...after what happened to Kenny G...well that didn't sit well with me or anyone else! It was an AVOIDABLE accident that should not have happened. Again..maybe it's time for Tom Sr to start thinking about helping the lower levels where his help would do wonders in helping the transition to Gano's system. Besides didn'r he help hire the last two coaches? I mean how many staffs to you get to stay on?

So exactly where did I cross the mythical Damien ...opps...TRUE DAMEIN LINE ?

always attacking without substance.

Frank Jr. said:

Thanks for clearing that up Frank. I was mistaken. I jumped to the conclusion that it meant your were an idiot who talks with 'authority' about topics that you know nothing about. My bad.

Now hurry along and get Fred to fight your battles for you.

p.s. I hope you're able to bandage your relationship with Canales. I'm sure he'll forgive you for outing him.

p.p.s. Fred, why not take down all the posts in this exchange? Frank started this thread down its sour path, yet his post stands. I guess you've got your reasons.

AHSFBfan,
I like your proposal the best, except I would switch San Dimas & Bonita to the Miramonte and Damien Glendora to the Sierra so it would be,
Sierra = Ayala, Chino Hills,D-Ranch, Glendora,& Damien.
Miamonte = Bonita, San Dimas, Charter Oak, South Hills, West Covina.
Competition wise I think it would be more even
as Glendora & Damien would fare better in the Sierra & Bonita & San Dimas would fare better in the Miramonte. Geographically it would be okay too.

Hey Fred,

How is this for a league??

Bonita, San Dimas, Northview, Glendora, Charter Oak, Damien/St. Lucys

Competitive in almost every sport
plus they are all close

woww said:

such a shame that the one consistent sport for chino has to be punished by being dropped to a lower league, which is baseball. no help from football and everyone knows basketball will never be good.

AHSFBfan said:

Below is what I believe would create more parity while maintaining competitive equity in most sports. It is also geographically sound. I don't understand why everyone wants Chino Hills in the Baseline. That is a bigger hardship on CH than it would be for Glendora. If it came down to one of the two, Glendora would be the most sensible choice considering their recent domination in the major sports and their easy drive down the 210.

Lets talk releaguing. My thoughts
Baseline: Los Osos, R.C, Upland, Colony, Etiwanda, Alta loma

Mt. Baldy: Don Lugo, Montclair, Claremont, Ontario, Chaffey, Chino
San Antonio: D Bar, Rowland, Walnut, Nogales, Wilson, Los Altos
Valle Vista: Covina, Pomona, Baldwin Park, Ganesha, Garey, Northview

Aram, you always were the smartest guy in the room. Congrats on the Fox gig...I've always said .."It's about production and you did produce while here". Best of luck.

Went to Damien's track met and Damien has some stud freshmen who have got major speed. The Herrera's told me that two of them actually are running faster times than Taylor did at that age.

Gano is a stud coach. Everyone seems to love the guy and the kids are energized. He's a people person and has a staff that gets things done...as evidenced by his stud players at Los Altos...Cody, Harwell, Rodriguez and others.

I hear the same thing from coaches I know and respect. Everyone wants IN at Damien. Damien has always had talent...just look at what Leyva has doen with the baseball team. Kids and parents are energized and players say they've learned more in a month than they did in their previous time at DHS. Coaching matters.

I hear they kept Tom Jr. which in my mind is great for Tom Jr. He''s a very nice guy who works hard but always needed to be lead rather than be the keader as evidenced by the lack of stud linebackers in forever at Damien. Also they gave the JV job to Coach Chavez who used to work with Coach Pasquerella. I think he might be in over his head but time will tell. On the other hand Coach P is a stud so maybe Chavez learned alot from him.

Not sure about anyone else. Hopefully Tom Sr. let's Gano run the show. Even Ton Landry and Don Shula had to retire sometime. I've seen Tom Sr. Coach and the days of kicking the crap out of someone and that's it have long gone by..everything is technique and maybe Tom Sr. should help at the lower levels were his stature and presence would do wonders for Damien. Hey he demands respect just by his size and tone. If he's on the sidelines again then things aren't changing fast enough for me.

Sorry to see Bubba go but I hear he ended up at a good place with a great guy as a HC so there's that. The most interesting thing at Damien will be how many of the lower level coaches they keep. In my mind it's time to flush them all out and start fresh. Gano hopefully has that kind or power and Travers has that kind of commitment to him. There has to be a sense that a Division 2 school shouldn't have Dads, Uncles and Brothers as coaches UNLESS they have the credentials to do so. It can't always be about saving pennies...Damein is as always "the prettiest girl at teh dance""..and coaches want IN....trust me on that!

Damien will be the powerhouse they should have been all along...especially with this realignment. Damien has talent, great kids and an education system in place that tends to every students needs. Add in a safe campus and the pretty cool relationship with St. Lucy's and Pomona Catholic and well it's money well spent. Especially in these tough competitive college admission times. Colleges RECRUIT DAMIEN STUDENTS BECASE THEY KNOW THEY GET OUT IN FOUR YEARS...THAT'S A GREAT REP TO HAVE AND A GREAT PARENT DRAW.

Mark my words ARAM, and I'm rarely wrong about this, The freshmen class is pretty special. Just wait...Sparta is back !

INTERESTED IN BEING PART OF A SPORTWRITERS ROUDTABLE SOME TIME?

Hey Freddie,

I'd love to know the impact Coach Gano has had at Damien. Any new arrivals? Who exactly ended up on his staff? I've heard there were lots of interested parties trying to get on that staff. So is it only the LA boys taking their act north to La Verne? Was anybody from Morrison's crew retained? Are five D-1 kids walking around on campus now? Gimme the info, Freddie!

Fred - good job. I don't understand everything that goes into this, but why wouldn't BHS and SDHS be in the same league. THey are natural rivals and have similar school populations....can't understand why.

common Sense said:

Chino Hills farther than Glendora.(23 miles as opposed to 18) Why is everyone so scared of them? Leave them in the Sierra. For competitive equity and geography Colony needs to go to the Baseline League. I don't think it is fair for people to worry about Chino and Claremont getting relief and Colony being able to continue to be successful and on the same token making it even harder for those other three to do well. Ontario Garey and Montclair won't go to the playoffs in a single major sport if you leave Colony in the league and add Claremont and Chino.

Fred - Your proposal is short sighted and only looks at things from the west side of the 57/210 interchange.

R2D2 I like how this post is fine from Fred but my post which has the same number of teams per league makes me a moron. You're a total clown!

FredJ said:

I think I will take my proposal to the May 6 meeting, explaining that the newspaper industry is also in a financial crunch, and that we need to keep Valley teams close together so we can save money too :)

rgd2626 said:

Fred,
as far as the rival situations everyone has been talking about. in my opinion its better not to be in the same league.you still play the other just in non league, that way win or lose you have to wait a full year to play again, i think there is more build-up and talk then, playing 3 times in a season sorta takes away from the (we can get em back) (wait till next time)if you have to wait a ful year much more antisipation then.i know football is only once a year anyway but all the other sports.
just my opinion having played and coached in those once a year situations.

FredJ said:

That's a small sacrifice, most sports other than football only play twice, baseball could do the same, 14 league games is plenty, and would allow teams to play more nonleague and tournaments. Plus, those eight teams leagues would benefit with four playoffs teams. This doesn't just make sense in football, but would fit with most sports. However, when it comes to football, what I like about my proposal is other than Amat, you have the best traditional teams in the Valley in the Sierra, followed by the second-tier in the Miramonte/San Antonio, followed by the Valle Vista and Montview.

rgd2626 said:

Fred,
that looks real good, i agree with you, but the major problem is 8 team league, that makes 21 league games for baseball, softball, basketball and etc,the only way to solve that is only play each other two times in league, i dought teams wil want to give up that many non-league games, they would have to give up tournament games, but it looks great, competitive and geographical.

Well Fred, it just doesn't, okay?

I am sure you will get a few people that see soemthing wrong with this, but like you said, if you take the politics and emotions out of it, this looks damn good...

But until this gets out to EVERYONE and starts getting some support from all areas, no one will listen. Maybe getting this out to all Principals and ADs and seeing what type of response you get and letting us know might get us going. From there maybe bombarding them with emails and phone calls might push them over...
