Northview bounces back, beats New York

Update: I don't know all the details, but Northview lost 7-4 today to Norco and will play in a consolation game Thursday at 1 p.m. at Esperanza High School

Thank goodness, and great for the San Gabriel Valley. The scary thing about going to a tournament like this is getting humbled so much that it messes with your confidence the rest of the way. I thought Bishop Amat going 2-2 last year was huge, and if the Vikings can get another win over the next two days, that's huge too. Between Amat and Northview if we can go .500 in the National Classic over the last two years, it will prove once again that the SGV can hang with anyone.

It wasn't exactly the type of game the Northview High School baseball team has been known for. But there are no ugly wins in the Anderson Bat National Classic, which the Vikings will attest to after scoring a 7-3 victory over Mamaroneck (N.Y.) in a consolation quarterfinal at Esperanza on Tuesday. Northview, getting a steady pitching performance from Ruben Ramirez and multiple-hit efforts from seniors Richy Pedroza and R.J. Arnold, improved to 10-3 and will face either Norco in today's consolation semifinals at 4 p.m. at Esperanza.

worried about our identity.

"This team is known for our pitching and defense. We're kind of getting away from that right now. We just have to start making plays. If we want to win tomorrow, we have to make plays."

Northview got away with its shabby fielding on Tuesday mainly because of Ramirez, who gave up eight hits and struck out five to get the complete-game win.

The senior also pitched out of a couple of jams to improve to 1-1.

Mamaroneck, trailing 5-3, loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth following back-to-back infield singles and a fielding error. But Ramirez ended the threat by striking out Luke Glaser.

The Tigers, trailing 7-3, put runners on first and second with no outs in the seven following a single and fielding error. But Ramirez secured the win after inducing a popup, fly out and groundout.

"He was incredible," Murphy said. "He was not 100 percent, and we were really skeptical about letting him play, but his parents and Ruben ensured us he was OK.

"He really wanted to play, and to come out with an effort like that, not being 100 percent, is the shot in the arm we needed."

The Vikings set the tone early with five consecutive hits, including a two-run triple by Arnold Banuelos, to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

"We sent eight kids to the plate, and we hit seven balls hard and five hits," Murphy said. "Two of three outs were line outs. We definitely had a better approach this game."

Northview seems to pad it's record with wins over powerhouses like Diamond Ranch, Ganesha and Pomona. Their record against actual teams isn't so good this year is it? Should play real competition more often.

Congrats to Northview... over at the Chino Tournament, Damien's Matt Whitehouse threw a no-hitter vs. St. Joseph Santa Maria. He struck out 17 of the first 19 batters to face him (and ended up with 17 Ks). The only runner reached on a K-passed ball. Senior OF Mark Garcia hit 2 home runs, and Damien won 13-0.
