Steve Ramirez: Say it ain't so, Brigham Harwell signs with the hated Washington Redskins

Above: Former Area Player of the Year Brigham Harwell
signed with the Washington Redskins.

There was good news and bad news over the weekend, at least for this reporter, who is a fan of our former area stars. The good was that after failing to be picked in the seven rounds of the NFL Draft, 2003 Area Player of the Year Brigham Harwell of Los Altos signed a free-agent contract. The bad news, at least for this reporter, who is fan of the Dallas Cowboys, was that he inked with the hated Washington Redskins, and will turn his blue and gold in for cardinal and gold. Here's the rest of my post on the Prep Stars: Where are you now? blog.
Also I have news on Damien's Freddie Brown and Ian Johnson, Charter Oak's Aaron Perez and Bret Lockett. All will get their shot in the NFL.

@ Frank C:

His brother's name is "Brent" not "Trent". You really shouldn't be lying and say you know someone when you don't. That's really not cool! Anyway, that is all I have to say.

P.S. I really do know both of them, so, don't try to BS me and tell me otherwise.

Brigham was my first Tribune Player of the Year. He's the best HS defensive player I've ever seen. And he was a great guy. He gave me the scoop on his choosing UCLA over Arizona St. and I still have the signed mini-helmets Brigham, Daniel Drayton and Travis Brown gave me.

I remember Brigham told me he was a little fat boy his freshman year of HS but decided to go out for track and according to him he ran a very, very fast 100 ... weight notwithstanding. And you know what? I believe it because in fact he's naturally fast.

I continue to believe UCLA misused him as an interior defensive lineman. He should have been a speed-rushing DE. Hopefully the 'Skins see that and Brigham has a great career ahead of him.

mrlippy,

I sometimes think it's better to be undrafted than to be drafted in the last couple rounds. Then you at least get to choose what might be the best situation for the player.

That worked out for Will Robinson, Amat '03. He was undrafted out of San Diego State and signed with Seattle. Players like Will have gone to the NFL Combine and hope to be at the end of the draft, but realize they may go undrafted. They are usually prepared with legal representation, either an agent or attorney.

However, once they sign it comes with no guarantee for a roster spot or a place on the practice squad. They have to earn that in mini-camps or pre-season. Once they have that, then they cash the checks. The first year Will was placed on the practice squad, the second year he was in position to make the roster before he got injured, and is presently #2 on the Seahawks depth chart at Left Tackle, a good place to be.

Let's hope it works out well for the other SGV-ites in this years draft. Best of luck to them.

Here's an interesting first round stat. First Round Draft Picks by state: New Jersey led with 7 players picked, Texas had 6, Cali had 3 (all SoCal... and Clay Matthews can be an honorary SGV - dad played at Arcadia), and surprisingly Florida had 0.

Fun facts to know and tell.

here is another local for you fred.... west SG has 2 drafted so far....

Freddie Brown (WR)
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 215
College: Utah
Conference: Mountain West
Hometown: La Verne, CA
High School: Damien
Pick Analysis: Brown lacks experience but has some upside going into Cincinnati with the unstable wide receiver situation there. He is a tall possession receiver who's not afraid to go over the middle. He can go up and get it, but he doesn't have top-flight speed. He really broke out and became the go-to guy in his senior season.
Overview
NFL fans might not be familiar with his name, but Alabama fans know all too well who Freddie Brown is after he closed his career with 12 catches for 125 yards in the Utes' upset of the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl.

Brown contributed for three years as a reserve in Utah's prolific offense (38 catches, 458 yards from 2005-2007) before becoming the possession receiver safety valve for quarterback Brian Johnson as a senior. Brown led the Utes with 77 catches for 900 yards and seven touchdowns in 2008.

He redshirted in his only season at Citrus College before going to Utah.

While Brown can play multiple receiver positions and is strong after the catch, he lacks great speed and must catch the ball more securely to make an NFL roster.

Junior College
Redshirted at Citrus College in 2004.

High School
At Damien High (Calif.), he was first-team all-league in both football and basketball ... lettered three times in both sports ... 45 catches for 685 yards and 5 touchdowns as a senior in 2003 ... set the school record for longest reception (97 yards) ... career numbers were 61 receptions, 895 yards and 6 touchdowns ... Damien High won back-to-back league titles (2002-03) ... honor roll student all four years.

congats to our local atheletes for making it to the big dance. can someone explain the "unsigned, free agent" status? do these guys hire agents? are they gauranteed anything? money, roster spot? practice squad? do they do the leg work? or, do they have an agent to court potential teams for them? how do they get the attention of a team. just curious as to how the procedure works. thanks

Congratulations to Brigham. His brother Trent is a friend of the family. Great individual. I have BH's high school hightlight tape Trent gave me...maybe Fred could down load it sometime. He was an amazing athlete and an even more incredible person from everything I hear.

BH has ROTC with my son's girlfriend at UCLA and she says he's an extremely humble and caring person with absolutely no ego.

The Redskins got a great person who should find a place in that organization in some capacity!

Also Freddie Brown from Damein was picked in teh 7th round by the Bengals. Amother quality persoan from an outstanding Damien family.

Best wishes to both...follow your dream!!!! WE ARE ALL PULLING FOR YOU GUYS!!!!!
