Baseball/Softball coach of the year?

| | Comments (63) |

The playoffs change everything don't they? Some coaches I had in mind have been eliminated while others I wasn't thinking about are now in contention. Why don't you help sort this out, who are your leading contenders in baseball and softball?

Are You High? said:

4-20,

You must be high and it's not even close to 4:20, Nieto has not help any of the Amat boys obtain a partial, full or any other ride to a major college. Like has been said in this forum before Maverick, Reyes and Fox would have been given the rides they all recieved wether or not Nieto or Joe Blo was the coach as a matter of fact what happened to Mistone and what exactly did Nieto do for him? Mistone had to walk on at UCR and this after the kid put up great numbers and was a 3 year varsity starter?

Do you happen to remember Christopher Eusebio? Chris went 11-0 as a senior for Nieto in 2007 and was going to have to walk-on at of all places Cal-Poly Pomona where he had already attended the incoming freshmen orientation. Chris was lucky enough to make the allstar team for the SGV Babe Ruth team that won the National Title with a coach named Phil Torres (Crescenta Valley High School), Phil Torres made a call to the LMU coaches on Chris' behalf and zippo zappo Chris gets his ride, now once again with no help from Nieto, so go ahead and praise Nieto and all his contacts but answer this question. Who has Nieto help get a ride? WHO?

Remember, answer the question before you get high if that's at all possible.

Nieto is the best coach in the valley. Those college coaches you mention are just a phone call away. Nieto is the best networker in the area lobbying for Amat players, that's a fact.

Get Real,

Dude seriously you need to get off the Andy Man Juice, exactly how many of those kids you mentioned were signed to any school not name UCI - GET IT!!! Thats right not one, you understanding yet - here let me help you "GILLESPIE" the UCI coach and Andy's only connection. Now, go back to the A.D. studies and get ready for the summer coaching job that BTW you're really good at!!! Oh, and don't for get to gargle only this time try Listerine or Scope.

Get Real said:

You wanted proof here it is. I seen Gillespie a few times go look at Grijalva. Not only at practice but also at a fall ball game at Arcaida High. When Amat played Lakewood this year Frank Cruz (USC) was there to look at Rio. When Amat played St. Paul Eric Valenzuela (USD) was looking at Paez, McClanahan, and the group of sophomores. Last season John Savage (UCLA) was at practice looking at Reyes. Gillespie was there last season looking at Reyes and Fox. Last season Sean Kenney (Pepperdine) was at a fall ball game to look at Mistone. Last Season Matt Curtis (Fresno St.) went to a fall ball game to look at Mistone. 2 summers ago Andy Stankiewicz (ASU) went to look at Fox, Mistone, Reyes, Bergara, Zuniga, Paez and McClanahan at the Junior Olympics. Nieto's first fall Sergio Brown (UC Irvine/Fulelrton) went to fall ball games to look at Fox, Mistone, and Reyes. So, yes coaches have been by. If players didn't get an offer it is because they didn't perform.

Players on the team say they only saw Gillespie show one time at practice. All the rest you mention is BS.

I WANT COACH CARLSON FOR COACH OF THE YEAR!!

Get Real said:

He got the scholarship because he performed when others were watching not because he played for Amat or the Arsenal. Not every player on the Arsenal get scholarships.

Really said:

The one who received his scholarship this year was not because of Nieto, it because he played on the SGV ARSENAL. Thats where he earned that ride!

Get Real said:

There is no high school coach who can get any of his players scholarships. It is up to each individual athlete to perform when college coaches come by to take a look. Coach Nieto does indeed have contacts. He has had coaches from USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Loyola Marymount, UC Riverside, Pepperdine, Fresno St., Oregon, UNLV, and Cal State LA attend practices and games. This year's senior class was very weak in their talent level that's why only one of them got a scholarship. Expect two players possibly three to get scholarships next season. The sophomore class should get three scholarships. Coach Nieto for coach of the year.

If anyone had any doubts about the opinion I posted I think Fisch has proved everything correct. I have no desire to address any of the childish rhetoric Fisch posted as I have better things to do with my time than argue with this imbecile. Although I must admit the "Maybe you wake up at night saying my name and you confuse your lover" was quite entertaining. To think that he would honestly confirm everything I have been saying about him in that manner and in such a public venue is quite validating.
Oh and just for the record for everyone who thinks that I am just another disgruntled parent who had a bone to pick with Fisch ...my child never attended South Hills!

Chill out. I bet that wasn't really Coach Fisch. You can call yourself whatever you want here. Probably a troll.

Besides, all coaches dream of a team of talented orphans to coach. Parents are the worst. And, as a parent, I know what I'm talking about!

leanimale said:

nieto for coach of the year, had a young team, with outstanding one, two punch pitchers - kudos to coach beck. Both coaches know how to manage a game. Rest assure if you can play you'll be in the line up...it's a competitive program.

Nieto Cronie said:

Coach Nieto, and I use that term very loosely is a salesman not a coach, make no mistake about it his winning record as the coach at Amat is due in large part to the fact that he is the beneficiary of a lot of talent, playing in a weak league, and a lot of luck. His in game decisions make his own brother scratch his head. He does not have the college or pro contacts that some on this blog would have you believe as a matter of fact the only true contact he has is Gillespie at UCI

When Nieto first came to the program he made a lot of promises and has not kept a single one, such as:

"I do not believe in having more than 16 to 18 boys on any single team"

"I have a plan for you"

"If you play in my program at the end of your senior year I will make sure you will be playing in college somewhere, it may not be UCI, UCR, CSF, or Texas but it will be somewhere"

To this day he has always had at any one time 22 to 25 boys on each team and the only plan he has for you is to sit the bench, oh and this years senior class aside from his godson has had to get themselves into a college program and some as walk-ons.

Now, these are just some to the promise made and not kept.

Coach of the year, I think not.

Salesman of the year, quite possibly.

Go ahead wannabe A.D. (AKA Summer Coach), lets all hear how great Nieto is!

Scott. Bad place to respond. You would have been better off telling angel to contact you to talk about this in private not in this public forum. You also might want to proof read your comments before posting because a few of things you said did come across as very cocky. Might wake up at night mistaking you for their lover? That was pretty bad Scott.

I understand many coaches get raked thru the coals on this blog and many of things you said about your job being thankless are true but you should have taken the high road on this topic. I also disagree about parents. Parents are VITAL to how a kid turns out. The problem many parents have is that they are very overbearing and can act like they know more than the coach as you stated. Also many of them are frustrated at their own HS experiences and want to try to ensure their kids have a better one. They also do think that their kids are the next Jenny Finch (any relation to fisch? ha ha).

One of the other bloggers hit the nail on the head when he stated you need to lay down the groundrules at the beginning of year to avoid any situations like this. You are right in the fact you can't make every happy so don't even try. I guess the good part about your post is that it makes mine look tame!!

Coach Fisch,

I see what Angelbaby was steering us too with her post.
I don’t think you’d be much of a coach without your continued recruitment of the young ladies outside of your school boundaries within West Covina. I know this first hand from talking to some of the better talented young ladies that have chosen to play and not play for you, that I’ve coached in the past. Parents are an important part of the player’s lives during their high school career, granted some take it to the extreme, but sometimes those ones will never be satisfied.
I’m surprised that you’d respond in the manner you did……seems POMPOUS to me!

Nice to see Andy back on pumping himself up again. Oh yeah, it's getting close to recruiting season, so here come "Pro Nieto" posts. Problem is, no one promotes him positively here on the blog besides himself. He's egotistical, immature, and limps. As far as I'm concered, he can go f*** himself. Wonder if he will hear all the kids trying to call other schools like they did last summer. Sorry Andy, but kids want to leave.

Completely Out Of Line said:

Fischie WTF was that!!!

Are you convinced high school sports would be better off without parents? Are you freaking serious? Get a Fkn clue and get your house in order. Tell the parents what they can and can not do, what they should and should not do. Make it cleat and firm why you feel it's necessary. Have it spelled out for everyone. Tell them how you're going to handle situations when they occur. You don't have to come on here and make comments about mistaking you for their lover? WTF was that? I'm surprised someone got under your skin that way.

I lost a lot of respect for you with those comments. Parents, like kids, need boundaries. So who sets the boundaries for coaches when they cross the line. Scott you're not perfect, no one is. Get a hold of yourself, you're better than that. Did you think everyone or anyone was going to love you or appreciate what you do for their kids all the time?

When any coach says high school sports would be better off without parents..it's time to hang up your whistle. The truth is all coaches have to do is talk openly with players and parents and squash things before they get out of line, which in your case, it clearly has.

wookie21 said:

I agree Nieto is tops in the valley. He has college head coaches show up at practices to get a look at kids. After that it up to the athlete to prove he is worthy athletically and academically of a college offer not a liability. Gillespie and Savage were at Amat for practices and games. Ask yourself a question: did your kid shine that day, did he do something that would allow one to take notice? They can see who has talent, all Nieto has to do is make a phone call...that's credibility the rest is up to your kid so direct your frustration in another direction.

Fisch Fan said:

Here's the truth. Softball players do not get scholarships from what they did in high school ball. It's all about travel ball and the big tourneys they play in during the summer. That's where the college coaches go to see them play against the best players in the nation. For most of the girls HS ball is for fun and school pride and a tune-up for the summer schedule. At best you get some JC coaches at the games hoping to get some players who haven't signed and maybe you'll see a few D1 coaches at the finals. So, don't blame the HS coach if your girl didn't get a scholarship. If you really want that get her hooked up with a top notch travel ball team.

Scott Fisch said:

Angelbaby,
I am deeply hurt you feel this way about me. I try to make everyone happy all the time and I can't please everyone. You obviously know me too well and therefore want to hide behind an anonymous name. Pompous?? Over what? Have we spoken? Have you spoken to the girls that have played for me over the years? Texas, Temple, Point Loma, APU, Oregon State, others? I know you don't care. Ask my second baseman what she thinks about me? I kicked her off last year and gave her another chance this year. Oh, you don't care about that. You must have been abused, always looking for the negative. I bet you she will tell you she made a huge mistake last year and am glad I stepped in when I did. It's not all about x'x and o's. It's dealing with the teenagers in the best way possible. Maybe you have a teenager? Let me guess? Travel ball player? Local travel ball? Made the allstars at 10 and 12? Still don't know how to throw or bunt and now it's my fault. Get in line buddy. Here's another story for and I will try to use small words so you can follow. I used pitcher most of her senior year. Pitched quite a bit, stuck with her through thick and thin. Average at best, always was and always will be. Of course was D1 prospect. Her parents knew it, her grandparents knew it and she knew it. Long story short, when she didn't get that D1 offer, guess whos fault it was? You're right. Maybe you are a little smart. Me! The reason??? I pitched her too much and hurt her arm!. Are you kidding?? High school softball would be great if it were played without parents. They honestly believe their daughters want them there hanging behind home plate. They honestly believe that when daddy says "Watch the change", that their D1 daughter is actually going to look for a change. Instead, the pitcher throws her an inside fastball and before she can get her wanna be Olympic Coach dad out of her head, she looks at another pitch and strikes out for the umpteeth time. On the way back to the dugoput she says, "I can't hit slow pitching." So in a nutshell dimwit, think what you want. This is fun for me. Maybe you wake up at night saying my name and you confuse your lover. Anyway, it's too bad this is how you choose to handle things. That's fine. Yopu probably don't have amirror in your house either. Maybe we'll talk soon but I doubt it.I will be busy planning for next year, organizing the softball all star game and figuring out ways to make my team better, both athletically and academically.

Nieto is not a very good coach. Tons of talent in a crappy league this year. Does things backwards and is the luckiest coach around. The little leprechaun should have lost the last cif game. Oh ya, he has done nothing for any of his players in the past when it comes to sending them to college.

Andy Nieto??? Coach of the year? What a joke!

UkLa pride said:

Get real, andy nieto's incompetence has been covered up by his players all year. That guy makes coaching mistakes in every game. The talent of his players has saved his butt many times over. If he has such pull with the college coaches then why has he not gotten more looks for his players? IF, he was so talented and so good a coach he would surely be coaching on a higher level than High School. Damiens coach Leyva has done a way better job with less, coach of the year - Leyva! Hands down!

good luck next year to your kids

As for softball coaches of the year....I definitely know of one coach that SHOULD NOT even be remotely considered, and that is the coach from South Hills "Fisch". He is such a disgrace to the game. A pathetic excuse of a man that is so ignorant.
I am surprised that the school would employ such a person to "coach" (and I use that term lightly) young girls. WoW!

His grandiose demeanor is what makes him such a joke. I know of many other parents and coaches that have interacted with this pompous idiot and are reading this post will wholeheartedly agree.

Meant to say most responsible for their time at "Claremont" in previous post. Whose most responsible at Damien? That's still to be determined. We'll see if Leyva sticks around and puts in the time toward next years season or if Gross bails him out by putting in all the coaching and teaching. Like I said previously, I just dont understand Gross' involvement anymore? Why?Could understand previously because he had a kid in the program at Clare. BTW anybody have any info on how his son is doing? Last I heard maybe at Cuesta College?

GRI said:

Don't know the LA baseball coach very well, but I do know the kids and their parents. Most of the kids and their parents don't like or RESPECT Coach Fermano. This team has some great young talent and some great seniors, terrible job of coaching. Totally agree with LA Fan, this guy is going to be lucky if he has a job next year.

cocoaches said:

Al Leyva "our offense and defense has carried us all year" Just another tactic to take away credit from Kevin Gross, the team's pitching coach. Leyva is jealous that people always lump in Kevin with him because he's always coached with Leyva both at Claremont and now at Damien. Gross is most responsible for the program at Damien due to his work in the summer when Leyva when routinely go coach rookie ball. My vote would not be for Leyva/Gross for coaches of the year. They finished 3rd, dropping 3 in a row in league and have 1 upset in the playoffs. That hardly is coaches (plural) of the year status.

LA fan said:

WOW Fermano!!! Are you kidding me!!
This LA team decided to take this in their own hands and band together. This has nothing to do with the coaching staff. If you have been to any of the LA games you will know exactly what I am talking about. The kids know more baseball than the coaches do at LA. Just because they won 3 games in CIF doesn't mean the coaching is doing something right.

I have to agree that Bishop Amat Head Coach Andy Nieto deserves coach of the year consideration. He has taken a very young team, a freshman and sophomore at the corners, youth in left and right field, and strong up the center with seniors, shortstop, 2nd base, center field, and returning starting catcher from last year's champs. Refined his and Coach Gillespie's version of small ball and led the Amat squad to the round of sixteen. He has gone undefeated in league for three straight years now and the future looks really bright given the talent that will be returning. Love him or hate him, he get's the job done over and over and gets my vote for Coach of the Year.

Rememeber this award is for coach of the year not humanitarian of the year. Whether you like him or not Andy Nieto deserves to be coach of the year. No one expected Amat to do as well as they have this past season. They lost the big 3 of Fox, Mistone, and Reyes. They also loss another 39 rbi's in Murakami. After starting out 2-3 Nieto got his players to beleive in his system and since that bad start they have gone 23-2 to be at 25-5. No one works the umpires better than Nieto. I know as a fan it might be frustrating but Nieto is a master at slowing down an opposing pitcher's rhythm and getting in not only umpires heads but also opposing coaches.
