Bishop Amat is peaking and ready for another title run; All-Valley Top 20 released

| | Comments (48) |

I'm expecting a big crowd at Bishop Amat this afternoon to watch the Lancers wrap up the Del Rey League title with a sweep over St. Paul. Can you believe they won at St. Paul (14-11, 7-2) so easily on Tuesday, 7-1, with the Swordsmen's big ace on the mound? It should be more of the same, the Lancers (20-5, 9-0) are peaking. Nobody combines pitching, defense and hitting as well as the Lancers. Sorry Northview and San Dimas, I'm predicting right now the Lancers will win their third straight CIF title.
Steve's take:I'll be the devil's advocate and go with Northview to beat Bishop Amat for the CIF-SS title. The Vikings have that never-quit attitude, which usually comes into play in the big games. They remind me of the 2004 Cal State Fullerton Titans, who had that same mentality on the collegiate level. And if memory serves me well, the Titans upset No. 1 Texas to win the national title that year.

By the way, I was looking at the Star-News baseball poll, and figured I would do an all encompassing baseball poll between our two area's. A top 20 would look like this based on games through Thursday.

1. Bishop Amat (20-5, Tribune)
2. Northview (18-4, Tribune)
3. Glendora (16-7, Tribune)
4. Arcadia (18-4, Star-News)
5. San Dimas (17-5, Tribune)
6. Damien (18-6, Tribune)
7. Bonita (16-5, Tribune)
8. Monrovia (15-7-1, Star-News)
9. South Hills (16-7, Tribune)
10. Charter Oak (15-7, Tribune)
11. Alhambra (15-7, Star-News)
12. San Marino (15-7, Star-News)
13. La Cañada (15-5, Star-News)
14. Temple City (14-9, Star-News)
15. Nogales (19-7-1, Tribune)
16. Diamond Bar (12-11, Tribune)
17. Maranatha (18-5-1, Star-News)
18. Pasadena (13-10-1, Star-News)
19. St. Francis (15-12, Star-News)
20. Bosco Tech (14-6, Star-News)

He's obviously in your head or why else would you search the blog and respond to his every post. I never noticed how often you did it but seeing his gibberish after your comments kind of exposes you. Never been a fan of his anger but I do see now how you love to annoy him. Thanks for saving the blog and the planet but his gibberish is making an ass out of you.

The CODE is it's cracking me up. I thought maybe it was hacker code trying to get your email address but I asked at work and the IT guy told me it was nothing more than random nonsense.

STICK TO THE CODE said:

Frank C ,
You should stick to the code for your replies. They make more sense then your recent post .We know you can't help yourself and butt in where you feel your vast knowledge and all knowing is needed. In this case you should have left it to Bob to reply but that ego just won't let you. Be true to yourself and stick to your code where only you know what you post and we will all be the better for it.

I agree about the cream but everyone else doesn't "choke" ..maybe they just compete and do their best...and maybe their best isn't good enough. I mena there is only 1 non choker per division based on your comment.

Bonita should know a lot about that given their recent playoff records!

How many CIF Championships have they won since Bobby was playing T- ball?

I'll bet a steak dinner at Ruth Chris and a Cowboy Ribeye that Bonita holds true to form if for no other reason than ..you jinxed them with that comment!

You're on!

D4 amat vs patriot, northview does not have the pitching depth to make the run like last year. They need another Andrade , which they do not have, those 2 games a week against tough comp will get to them. Amat then should be moved up to D2 or D1 in baseball once and for all.

D3 Bonita pitching staff may be tired with all the innings they throw. They will win first game then get knocked out in game 2. Nice season though.

Based on strength of schedule, and a no hitter, my vote for top pitcher goes to Matt Whitehouse.
Next pick let the Amat coach pick between his two studs. Finally Nico Calderaro for his innings pitched and consistency.

Huth, not to be confused with Ruth,
I've seen Bonita many times and I'll say it's been disappointing year because of the losses and who they're against (Wilson, Los Altos, Charter Oak-not once, but twice). Now, they can win the whole thing and that would be nice, but don't go making full of yourself acting like they're dominating. SS is a fine player, not unbelievable by any means and #1 pitcher has good stuff. Besides that, who is a real talent on the team? Don't mention the guy going to another big college (not naming names-trying to be classy) because he's just a good high school player. Huth, lose the bias and be real here.

bonita has the number 1 pro rated player in the state, at his position..went from div. 4 to div. 3
team era is under 2.12
dont be a hater ,come watch them play
then make your decision, they didnt win the cif last year.northveiw did .n.v. stays down, bonita gose up..17and 5 not to bad , the year will be wasted if they dont finish the job..any body wants to lay a steak dinner on whos team gose farther.in platoffs put your team out there..the joker out

Jcaz,

Finals are at Angel Stadium, probably at 10 a.m. on that Saturday. If the rankings hold up - and there's no reason to think they won't - until pairings day, both would be seeded Nos. 1 and 2, so they could only meet in the finals

NV is the sure bet said:

I'll say it again and again - we NV fans love when Freddy bets against us. He did it last year in a few of the bigs and he did it after NV lost the first game against SD. I believe big Freddy was wrong again when they met for 2 in one week. NV-2 games, SD-1 game. - so keep betting against us.

It sounds as if the playoffs are going to be very intersting this year, especially if both Amat and Northview get into that final game against one another.

Now, I wonder, if Amat is the home team again this year, will Nieto once again have the game played at East LA College ? Or will he try to give the valley a bit of a break and have that game played localy instead ?

BTW, just got back from seeing that new Star Trek movie. Just awsome !

Fred,
Thanks for putting this list together. You always do a great job.
As a private school parant I can say that you are very missed out here as you seemed to always give us a fair look among the many public schools in the area. Today the Star-News gives very little coverage to private schools. Clearly in baseball this year, the Rio Hondo League gets about 90% of the coverage.
Miguel has not even been to one of our games so our being in the Top 10 and where we land is purely a guess.
We miss you Freddy and we miss Scott too!

Another Joey Classic!!!!

Joey what do you think about a Fundraiser Game to help the Little Girl al The Ortega Family?

Sierra league Vs. Bishop Amat..seeing as the Sierra League is the toughest league around.

Is it possible?

i agree said:

I agree completely when the game is on they will get after it. It would be fun to see and they would want to get the best of thier buddies. I could see the game getting heated with action and when it was over they will give each the mutual respect. I agree thier is no hate but wanting the win.

.... ,

read your posts - read my posts... now tell me who's running whose mouth?

I'm not sure I've made one prediction, said one time all season who would beat who, or compared teams. You?

I was just *shocked* that you seriously thought a couple kids in Northview hats at a game would "intimidate" anybody?

(nice handle by the way - are you *sure* that's how you spell that?)

umm said:

i think that "...." was talking bout the crowd but yeah that is very true one of the kids that was there related to grijalva?! those kids have friends on the team but they both kno wen "play ball" is called its all buisness between those lines! then the friendship is still there after the game how it should be! but screaming and getting the dugouts into the game is how its supposed to be thats y the 1st amat northview game was so great...but the cousins n friends still had that laugh wen shaking hands!both teams have great sportsmanship i think its just some of the bloggers n fans that make it seem that there is hate between the players...its not hate its being hungry for a "W" n playing the game?

ok said:

Let's get real. Nobody even noticed when the Northview players were there. .....Have you been to every Amat game this year? You should see how St. Paul is at home. How can say Amat players were intimidated by the Northview players being there. Do you realize that Northview and Amat have players that are friends and play together outside of their HS teams? They talk all the time with each other. Amat #1 and Northview #1 will play Connie Mack together this summer. Does Northview really have to be screaming into someones ear in order to win game or can they just play baseball?

Frank C said:

Fred and Joey...there was a thread about that little girl who needed money for her medical bills....any chance we can put up a game between Damien and Bishop Amat and have the proceeds of teh game go to the little girl?

Maybe another Sierra League team could step to the plate ...so to speak.

I'll have T shirts made for any fans willing to contribute $4.00.

I have a feeling it would be standing room only. I hear allot of talk about the Sieera League "being the toughest league around" and I hear allot of talk about Bishop Amat playing in a weak league so maybe we can settle it and help that little girl out in the process.

Trojan Man...I know you have daughters? What do you think? Anyone else?

Might even bring a new appreciation for our own "blessings".

Fred, Joey, Sparta????? What do you think...is it possible?

SGV Hope said:

I went to both St. Paul vs. Amat games this week. They have the best starting pitchers in the division. They are like fire and ice. Paez is the emotional pitcher who wears his heart on his sleeve. Zuniga has ice running thru his veins. They both look unbeatable in the playoffs. I'm hoping for an all SGV final. I was more impressed with the way they both shook of homeruns and beared down and got the job done. In talking to an Amat parent after the game he said that they did the same thing against Orange Lutheran and Servite.

..... said:

yes i really did say intimidated with a straight face cause ill take northview throwing there #1 vs amat's #1 ANYDAY! northview players talk it up and get there dugout jumping, amat hasnt been in a game where they have the dugout (19-20) players screaming in there ear.....like i said intimidated!! joe amat stop running ur mouth, and talking like no1 can hold a candle to amat?! not trying to be rude its just that you do a bit more talking than you should be? and if anderson is called out at second when he got thrown out by the catcher (on his knee's) its a very diffrent game!
i dnt think amat can handle a teams whole bench in the game talking it up in there ear?

Joe Amat Author Profile Page said:

Did you *really* say "intimidated? Seriously? I mean typed with a straight face and everything? No "smiley" !:?)

I'm sure you were kidding. So let's just hope for an all SGV CIF Final!

i was at the st.paul, bishop game today...and a few kids from northview were there, and they walked through the crowd everybody's heads turned, n those kids were probably loving it and everybody had a look on there face like if they wanted to make it to the finals they had to go through that team and that they are the team to beat in the playoffs!? it seemed like they wre itiminated by them! should be another good run for them in the playoffs too. they are still looking for that "NORTHVIEW VS AMAT #2" look out amat.... playoffs will be fun!

Hurting Ayala Fan said:

Lance R,

Amat should be proud of what they have done so far this season, in fact I wish Ayala was in the same place. I just disagree with the number one ranking when Amat beats up on weak teams in a weak league. Good Luck in the playoffs while all of parents and fans of the two Chino Hills teams lick our wounds.

Lance R. said:

Ayala fan,

It is not how you start but how you finish a season. Amat was a work in progress team at the beginning and now they are putting the finishing touches on what is turning out to be another title run. They would beat Ayala, Diamond Ranch, Diamond Bar hands down right now. True they got beat in the early stages but this is one heck of a baseball team as it stands right now. The Success of this Amat team will continue and altho anything can happen, come playoff time Amat will be in the hunt for another CIF title.

Hurting Ayala Fan said:

If Amat was in the Sierra league they would not even make the playoffs. Ayala is bad and they beat Amat with a sophomore pitcher who gets rocked every week when he faces Sierra league hitters. In fact Diamond Ranch beat Amat and they have only one league win. Amat plays nobody and get all the hype. There is no way they can hang with teams in the IE.

SGV Baseball Fan said:

Glendora might be able to beat Ayala but how are they going to win in the playoffs without scoring runs? Have you seen the scores of their games this year? Nobody is knocking in runs. Somebody needs to step up offensively for that team to go anywhere.

Tartan Fan said:

Prediction:

Glendora sweeps Ayala next week.
Chino vs. Damien results in a split.
Glendora wins league title.

Daily Bulletin said:

How about matching them up against those teams just east of them in the IE representing Daily Bulletin? I would like to see how Amat would do against those teams now that they are hot.
