Another Nailbiter: Bonita holds on, wins 5-4 to assume control in the Miramonte League

| | Comments (55) |

The most unlikely hero, junior outfielder Anthony Ramos, hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning that stretched a 3-2 lead into a 5-2 cushion that gave the Bearcats the breathing room they needed to close the door on Charter Oak. With the scored tied 2-2 in the fourth, Bonita's Jiovanni Mier was on third with two outs when Evan Highly appeared to hit a routine ground out to third to end the inning. With the Chargers running back to the dugout, it was appealed, and the home plate umpire ruled that Chargers first baseman Kenny Kissell came off the bag on a throw in the dirt, allowing Mier to score for a 3-2 lead. Two pitches later, Ramos hit the big homer, a devastating blow to the Chargers. Bonita pitcher Nico Calderaro was great. After giving up a two-run homer to Chris Allen, he led 5-4 when he got Allen to strikeout with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, then got a ground out to end the game with the tying runner on second in the seventh. Bonita is now 15-5 and 7-3 to take a half game lead over Charter Oak, 14-7, 6-3. More importantly, Bonita holds the 2-1 series advantage should they finish in a tie.

FOB, I shouldn't be surprised that you don't own a dictionary so I'll help you out on the definition of "perspective." It is "the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance." It is probably asking too much for you to actually have any perspective...your problem, not mine.

Ken, kudos for your comments. I want to add that in addition to being one of the best baseball players in the SGV, Jio should also be admired for having the grades and test scores to be admitted to USC. The problem with a lot of kids that wind up signing for a few grand is that they lack the grades to go to a 4 year college so their only option is JUCO. If he stays healthy, Jio is going to be drafted again in two years and at that point he has a lot of leverage in demanding a bigger signing bonus or just staying in school for another year of a $40K education. A baseball career is short lived but a college degree lasts a lifetime.

people should stop trying to worry about the s.s. at bonita, saying he needs work on hitting.needs to do this, needs to do that, my god, he just one of gods childred playing a kids game ,leave it at that ..and at 18 years old, who dosent need extra help hitting.. but iwill tell you one thing from experience..theres no helping kids at the next level of pro ball. coaches are just like the players trying to move up the ladder, if and when hes a high rounder all the coaches will take a little extra time with him ,so they can say ,,i was a part of the kid going up the ladder..if it was me and i could do it all over again ,theres no doubt i would go to u.s.c. learn more so later you will have a better way of handling things in a more muture out look..plus it helps you with the minor leagues traveling. and if you go to the big time college you go straight to the higher single a clubs,in a half season you can be brough up too AA. next season AA to AAA to the show.. if you sign out of high school, players go to extened spring training for 2 seasons.. maybe three season to get to high A ball. see it takes the same time to get to AA ball out of college or h.s. plus in college you get to play for a college world series ring three times .pro ball is over rated ..its a job, the fun gone..acouple games you go o for 14 on the road at 18 years old with no friends or family to come home too. it sucks..easy to find bad habbits to get into. over sleeping, bad eating, drinking it gose on and on ..nobody watches you. your on your own..see you tomorrow at the park. like the late, Al Canpanis of the dodger, told my boy one night at the angel staduim,he signed a ball for k.c. it said on it K.C. go to college, we still have the ball i was the last person al signed after the dodgers fired him for a comment he made about some races that play the game. he took a job for the palm spring sun ind. team. he signed me to his last ever contract,,so we will repect his wishes and K.C.. will go to college thats it for now...and kevin donald dont ever call my son a daughter again.ken go bombcats where starting to flex are muscles.

FOB, for the record, CO and Bonita played 4 times this year with each winning twice...so its a push so far. And, they didn't kick my butt as I do not play on the team nor do I have any need to live vicariously through it. I'm just a fan of good, clean baseball and ALL the young men that are playing...including two of the Bonita players that you are bagging on which I have had the privilage to watch or coach when they were growing up. Maybe I'm just stupid because I just can't understand why some people have a need to verbally attack the abilities of young athletes who practice long and hard and then go out and play the game to the best of their God given abilities. In my mind, even these as you would say LOSER kids and teams are still winners in the big picture of life. You need some perspective pal.

Let’s try and put Jio into perceptive. This kid is a true talent and will go high in the draft.

The kid truly makes some exceptional plays at short, maybe some big league plays right now. Defensive skills, size, height, and ability to play catch are why this kid is on the radar...

But he's bat needs alot of work. I would imagine a good hitting coach at the next level will straighten him out. It will be a big adjustment to make from high school BB to the next level(s) Hope he works hard and doesn't let this stuff go to his head.

Brad said:

FOB, I don't need a clue because I merely speak the truth. And, be careful what you wish for because the realignment starts in the fall of 2010 which means that CO and Bonita are still in the same league next season. So, if you are right that the varsity stinks without Jio then it is you that is predicting that CO is going to hammer Bonita next year. And, in the 2010-2011 season Bonita is going to have to deal with South Hills, Diamond Bar and Los Altos so you may be looking up from 3rd or 4th place. Relax, bad calls by umps are an UNFORTUNATE part of the game that sometimes cheat the team that deserved to win. And, this wasn't just a bad call, it was incompetence by the field umpire as he somehow forgot to perform his assigned duty. Does anyone really belive that the home plate umpire was able to watch the runner from 3rd step on the plate and then in the blink of an eye look to first base to make the disputed call? Unless he's Superman, no way.

Hope you enjoy many more second and worst finishes in your new league. Enjoy cif this year might not see it for awhile. Get a clue or go back to pony.

Relax said:

Ken / Brad - I was not there so I don't know if it was a bad call or not. If it was, bad calls are part of the game and your team must fight through them. Last year, a bad call probably cost Bonita a win over NV in CIF, but you have to give NV credit for capitalizing. If this was a bad call, then give BHS credit for capitalizing.

Brad - everyone knows CO has a great program and is well respected by anyone that knows baseball. You guys should do well in CIF and it would be great if the CIF championship could be all Miramonte. You are right in that your freshman team would be very tough, if impossible to beat if Santiago was pitching. That kids is going to be good. All varisty teams are a combo of all the classes and freshman and JV competition is vastly different than varsity. Only time will tell if the freshman and sophomore classes will be successful at the varsity level. Having said that, it will be very difficult for both classes to match the senior class at BHS this year but I am sure they will continue to work hard and be a credit to their school.

Future - you have made your opinion crystal clear. Clearly, Jio is a great player, but I think most people would disagree with you that BHS does not have many talented players capable of making CIF playoffs (this will be the 3rd straight year the team makes CIF playoffs). Most great teams have a go to player. Having said that, no need to beat a dead horse, your opinion is known.

Hope everyone has a good day and remember to keep things positive!!

Future is Bright, or should we call you FOB for full of bull@#$%? What part of your own coach admitting to the ump's mistake don't you understand? Why don't you go ask Coach K yourself, er, can't do that after all the trash you've been talking about the varsity players, can you? My kid wasn't on the mound for the home run but if he was I'd be proud of him nonetheless. There must be some kind of ego boosting glacier water, er, Kool-Aid, that the Bonita Freshman Baseball parents drink each spring as the Freshman team last year had the exact same attitude after winning the rubber game from CO to take league. Last years Freshman team proclaimed that they were the greatest thing since the 1929 Yankees and predicted they will win league every year. You do know that if they stay together for four years then this means that your kid's Freshman team will be playing JV as Juniors. That is, if the next best baseball team since sliced bread doesn't show up next year or the year after. If CO does wind up in a different (better) league next year, one thing that I will miss is seeing the internal cat fight that is going to expload when the parents of the JV and Freshman team get a dose of reality in the next year or two. Good luck FOB, I think you're going to need it.

Sounds like your kid was the kid that gave up the home run. I think ken got the call right. Good luck next year co

Brad said:

Hey Ken Huth, you remind us that many people watch baseball games but only a few really see the details. You may want to clean your glasses because after the game Bonita's Coach K admitted to CO's Coach Q that the umps blew the call. Is Coach K or you wrong? And for you Future is Bright, why don't you just come out and say that you think that your Freshman kid is better than every varsity player except Jio. My experience is that parents who promote their own kid by knocking others usually have a kid that isn't really all that talented. Let's see how your kid does next year sitting the bench on the JV team.

Hey Future is Bright, Charter Oak's freshman team split the first two games against Bonita and did lose the rubber match but, do you really think that Charter Oak's Freshman would have lost ANY games if Travis Santiago was pitching for them instead of for the varsity team? Get real. As for the call at first base, the field umpire was totally out of position and, despite the fact that first base is his responsibility, he could not even make a call. And, the home plate umpire wasn't even watching first as he was focused on home plate. Plus, everyone admits that the kid was out at first. Unbelieveable incompetence that cost Charter Oak the game and maybe league.

Hey Joe Ump
First of all, I have forgotten more of the games that I've umped than you'll ever do!!! Secondly, how many plays with two outs and a runner on third are there going to be that requires an ump to be closer to third than first? If that umpire was closer to that play he wouldn't have had to ask for help! However, my whole point was that the Trib stated that the base ump called the runner out and and was asked to appeal to the home plate umpire. He was never asked to appeal the call because after a few moments of indecision he "Then" went to plate umpire for help. It wasn't a high throw where you have to watch the ball go into the glove high in the air while at the same time see if the firstbasemans foot is still on the bag and the runner touches first! If the base ump was closer to the play he wouldn't have had to ask for help!!!

Fly on the wall,
You could not be more wrong. with a runner on third the base umpire should be in the "C" position which he was. he had the call at first but wanted to be sure that the first baseman kept his foot on the bag. He was in perfect position.

fly on the wall said:

Regarding yesterdays Charter Oak vs Bonita game. The Trib erroneously stated that in the fourth inning when Mike Hernandez weak throw to first that short-hopped into Kissels glove for the third out of the inning was "Appealed and Overturned", resulting in a 3 run inning for Bonita. The fact is the base umpire never made a call but instead deferred the call to the plate umpire who wasn't even watching the routine play because he was watching the runner from third touch home plate with his mask still on!!! In fact, the base umpire was out of position to begin with! With two outs and a runner on third he should have been on the right side of the infield prior to the pitch because there is a 90% chance that if there is going to be a play in the infield it would be at first base! He would have been closer to the play! Instead he was on the third base side of the infield. He couldn't make the "Big Call" because he was out of position!!! So he never made one at all!

Ok, then let me try this again. Bonita is overrated. they play in a weak league as does Northview and Amat, yet every time I come to this blog I see some story about their two team leagues. That's it! Each of the these teams has themselves and one other team that is respectable at best in their league yet they consume 90% of the pictures and blog headings. Fred did you attend each of these high schools? Give some love to the Big 3 from the Sierra League, your own words. The SL is the toughest league from top to bottom and they go virtually ignored by you. The SL race is down to four teams and three of those team are in the SGV. The team you have the biggest hard on for, Amat, got beat by the SL's last place team. I know it was early in the season, but come on,, it tells you how hard the SL really is. Give up some love.
