Extra, Extra, Read All About It: Regan is a quote machine, don't miss today's story

| | Comments (32) |

Were you able to follow the games on Twitter Friday? If not, read all about them here. Like I said, nobody covers SGV sports like we do.

Scott French, one of my favorite reporters, covered San Dimas' 11-7 win over El Segundo. Coach Mike Regan on the call that turned the game.
"It's karma. That's what happens, man. (The umpire) tried to homer us, and our guy hit a grand slam. That's how it works. ... That was the worst call I've seen in my whole life of baseball. That was just ridiculous, man. Zero integrity. He knew in his heart that was the wrong call, and that's what happens, man. The baseball gods, right there." -- San Dimas coach Mike Regan

I was at the South Hills-Bonita extra-inning thriller, where two South Hills freshman made the difference. CJ Saylor squeezed home Derek Klena in the bottom of the eighth for the 3-2 win.
"I got the sign and I just had to get the bat on it. It was over my head and I just went after it. Incredible." -- South Hills' freshman CJ Saylor

Bishop Amat pounds La Quinta, 14-5; Damien's dream runs ends, and Charter Oak comes up short against Beckman. Afterward, Chargers coach Tom Quinley talked, sort of. "I don't have much to say," Quinley said after a base-running miscue prevented the Chargers from possibly tying the score or taking the lead in the sixth. "We had a couple of blunders ... I don't have anything to say. It was too bad, because we were just as good as they were. It shouldn't have come out the way it did. But that's baseball."

Yes, let's not even get into Mike regan's DRINKING DILEMMA... He is a classless idiot. San Dimas would do just as well without him - actually better. They are usually agreat group of kids. They deserve better. Regan, he is a no class, whining little baby who seriously needs to grow up and get some class. Degree check, please???
You are right - he is just a punk a**.

whatever said:

he was only hosed down at second BECAUSE he slowed down WHEN the umpire called the balk

worstcall said:

A called balk in the bottom of the 8th putting the game winning run in scoring position after the runner was hosed at second. Now that's pathetic your just an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You nailed it but only left off the crap of last year. Many uncovered a horrible situation of tobacco and booz over the last four years.

Guys a real punk...

Moronic Regan said:

What a joke this Regan guy is, can someone plese check and make sure there is a colloge degree? He is THE WORST with any quotes. I would almost rather the Trib leaves them alone, I think even his kid's parents would agree. Man, you want to see whining or throwing HIS own kids under the bus-watch or catch regan after a close game in which his team loses. HE will have no shame and throw ANY of his kids under the bus - saying who blew what play, or who missed a signal. He is just an ignorant, classless fool. Having said that, I wish San Dimas the best tomorrow, there are some great, nice kids on that team.

Time for predictions!

San Dimas vs. Bishop Amat

SAN DIMAS: PF: 9.4 p.g. PA 3.5 p.g.
Leyland 577 b.a. 11 h.r.
Jenson 510 b.a.
Thrall 5 h.r.
Ponzo 4 h.r.

Salcido 1.68 era 10 w
Ponzo 3.26 era 7w

Home field advantage..upper hand on batting power..must cut down on defensive errors.

BISHOP AMAT: PF: 9.4 p.g. PA 3.5 p.g.(same as SD)

McClanahan 472 b.a. 7 h.r.
Ruiz 3 h.r.
Anderson 14 s.b.

Zuniga 1.76 era 10 w
Paez 1.76 era 9 w

Tougher schedule by far..better Coach..need to execute their pitching and step up on their bats.

Very Tough call: They will go head to head till the end and it is destined to be a better game than S.Hills and Bonita.

SAN DIMAS 5 ...BISHOP AMAT 4 !

you can't be serious.

R U Kidding,

A clear cut incorrrect call isn't "judgement"...it is a mistake. And, I've read the rules of baseball many, many times and have never come across any rule that says that mistakes by umpires are part of the rules. We have all watched lots and lots of games in which, other than a boderline pitch being called one way or the other, ZERO umpiring mistakes were made. I think we can agree that umpiring mistakes are not part of EVERY game. My opinion is that when they do happen and affect the outcome of a game, it is a travesty that can't be shrugged off with some "part of the game" excuse.

r u kidding me said:

Brad--

you are comparing apples and oranges my friend....yes, bad calls by umpires WAS, IS, AND FOREVER WILL BE part of the game, from little league, travel ball, high school, college, minors and even the majors ....JUDGEMENT CALLS are what they are, there isn't instant replay in baseball.............and yes, food poisoning is a part of eating, we all take chances....

Aaron said:

As someone in another blog posted a comment "When does football season start?" I hate reading about Baseball, it's utter torture, just ask Beano Cook or listen to his podcast with Ivan Maisel. What makes it worse is all the internet tough guys that comment on this blog(seems to be worse during baseball season)...I'm tired of it. Give me lots of Bearcat info soon please.

Brad said:

I didn't see the Bonita game and don't have any connection to the school but want to comment that if bad calls by umpires are "part of the game", then food poisoning is part of eating. Anyone out there ever paid $20 for a meal only to barf their guts out an hour latter and just shrugged it off as "part of the game"? Don't think so. As I've said before, bad umpiring is an "unfortunate" consequence that cheats the true winner of victory.

Move On said:

One more thing Ken..

If Nico had command with his curveball yesterday, just maybe the coaching staff calls a different game.

The ump sucked, but so did some of the execution yesterday.

Peace..

Move on! said:

Kenny

I understand your comments, because if Bonita won, you probably would be playing in Anaheim.

Very tuff pill to swallow but you should know, that "BAD CALLS" are just part of every sport.

How many guys struck out yesterday in key situations. How many second and third? Take care of business.. Game over.

Kids need to learn that situational hitting is something that needs to be practiced more than not. You have to face facts, the hitting production of the Bearcats wasn't all that good this year. We could go thru the stats, but it will only piss many off. Also, Knott needs to put them back up on Max since the playoffs are over. Then we can discuss the "hitting approach by game"

Peace

kh suks it said:

kh, you are a whiny byatch. leave the game on the field. no umpire ever ruined anyone's career. breaks are part of the game. take your little league attitude back to t-ball and go back to beating your wife and dog. at least they know something about baseball and life.

"GAME OVER YOU SUCK HOW THIS GUY CAN LIVE WITH HIMSELF IS BEYOND ME.ENJOY THE GIFT SOUTH HILLS A GIFT FROM THE GODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1"

GEEEZZZ..... YOU PARENTS/ FANS SHOULD WONDER HOW YOU COULD LIVE WITH YOURSELVES!

I was at the game and yes, the Umpire did call a balk and Coach Knott did debate it. What's the problem, the Umpire wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't call it.

I know this "GAME" was very important to Bonita's very successful year, but a team that was better that day beat them.

Stop your sniveling at the expense of an Umpire that may or may not have made a bad call. They could have easily called a foul ball on Meir's 7th. inn. home run, but it went Bonita's way.

You parents/ fans were pathetic! I felt embarrased for all of SGV.

FredJ said:

What I'm reading is a bunch of jealous people whose teams are probably already eliminated. Congrats to Bishop Amat and San Dimas, the stage is yours on Tuesday.

Homers said:

This should be fun then. Two of the most disliked coaches in high school baseball going head to head. If people think Regan likes to work the umps wait until they see the little general Nieto in action. They haven't seen anything yet.

THEWORSTCALL said:

The Balk call was so late the play was already made at second and now its a balk. The worst call ever in the history of the game what a joke how knot keeps his composure is beyond me that ump should have been spit on dirt kicked all over his shoes like a piece of work that he is.You never ever want to be the difference in a big game as a blue and today this idiot was, period.GAME OVER YOU SUCK HOW THIS GUY CAN LIVE WITH HIMSELF IS BEYOND ME.ENJOY THE GIFT SOUTH HILLS A GIFT FROM THE GODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Prozac Mikey said:

Have to agree with Joe here.. Bonita had runners in scoring position many times and DID NOT execute. Nobody would be talking about the bad call or the squeeze play.

Get the hits, game over..

As far as Regan, claiming “ZERO INTERGITY” – we’ll this is his middle name and has the worst rep in the VVL or maybe the valley. Can’t wait for the Amat fans to see this homer in action. If the Umps make a bad call, you see a freak show and get a good laugh..

whitey said:

the umpires are assigned by their local unit, for Amat/San dimas it's the Foothil Citrus assoc. they are rated on their regular season performance and the top individuals are assigned accordingly, however once they get to the quarterfinals or further, the CIF office, parcels them to outside associations, hence Tuesdays game could have officials from San Luis Obispo, High Desert, orange County, Long Beach, et al...maybe Amat has a slight advantage playing several games in the OC and Long Beach areas, I mean you hear all the barking from SD and they played what? one game out of the Foothill/Citrus area? something to think about, cya Tuesday Joe, wearing my white Packers hat!

Joe Amat Author Profile Page said:

Ken (and others),

Maybe Whitey can explain this in the exact logistics but Umpires are assigned by the CIF Commissioner on the basis of their performance during the regular season. I believe they are assigned to games outside the area in which they work and in a game which no team from their area is playing... to avoid "homerism"

That being said, as in all sports, I think the home crowd is influential in an umpires psyche and deep down inside may affect judgement in certain instances. I also think that certain coaches get the benefit of the doubt and have earned a little "respect" that may carry over into the head of an umpire as well... whether they want to admit it or not (sorry Whitey)

They are human and that's sports... just watch the NBA playoffs!

Homers said:

Does this mean that San Dimas will have homer umps on Tuesday?

Ken we both lucked out. damien and bonita lost on the same day so no free steak for either of us...too bad. You seen like one heck of an interesting dude! your love for the game is impressive if a little battered today. south hills made a great play to win. a freshmen has a great story to tell for the rest of his life and that's what you should be focusing if you truely love the game.

gutsy call for sure on the squeeze. plowman hit a monster slam last game and that wicked lady sprinkled magic dust on the bonita players...this time that wicked fickle b8tch decided to sprinkle that kid....just look at his face screaming with joy.

as an athlete ken we know this game will hurt forever but as all athletes must do...to stay in love with 'her" we must realize we were always in control of our own destiny. "we" could have done this or not done that but "we" had bats in out hands, a glove on out hand and a ball in our hand...just like the other team...someone is going home with "her" tonight Kenny...an d this time it won't be bonita.

the beauty of the game is it's a recorded event...those that played I salute you...those that lost I will say this "pain is part of the game"...to those that won...what can I say...it's why you play the game!

kenny I tried to speak your language...hope that eases teh pain somewhat...you gotta admit for as wicked a b*tch as "SHE" can be..."SHE" still is a powerful, beautiful and archingly missed companion!!

tough break seniors

Here's a San Dimas/El Segundo Photo Gallery from the Daily Breeze . Unfortunately more ES than SD, but still a few good shots. The last photo shows a close play where SD clearly nailed a guy at the plate in the 6th. The questionable call in the 7th was probably one of those umpire attempts at evening that out.
http://tinyurl.com/m76ye2

Someone mentioned Amat "overlooking" San Dimas. I can assure you that won't happen. Any team that can top El Segundo on the road needs to taken seriously-beginning today and at practice... not just on game day or when you're down a couple. ES is coached by a legend who is 75yrs old (seriously) and has won over 1,000 games. They play serious baseball in El Segundo for sure.

John Stevenson is in his 50th year coaching at El Segundo, but said he rarely has he seen a crazier game.

"I don't know where to start, I don't know where to end," Stevenson said. "It was as wild as they come, especially in a high-profile game like this."

Poor Saints? said:

Is all the complaining from the coach and the supposedly impartial writer an attempt to get the umps on San Dimas side against Amat? If they need to rely on the umps they won't have a chance against Amat. For one Amat's pitchers are better. Too bad you didn't play them yesterday because that's about as bad as you'll see Amat pitch again.

thats baseball,
bonita vs s.h. bonita cant blame nobody.
left way to many runners in scoring position early in the game.am not even going to get into the umps.four bad calls all agianst the bearcats.
am going to put it right there. you guys as a unit suck.
these kids work there ass off for 4 straight
months.livin the dream.
the umps stumble off work or the bar and get paid to ruin a kids dream.
it happened last season. it happened this season.
end the game on a ump calling a balk putting runners in scoring position with no outs.
instead of 1 out runner on first base ,
he blow the home run call on gio.same ump. but got over ruled by home plate ump.
what a homer ump.. blow the call on jeff stealing second base the ball beat him there but it short hopped and the glove was coming up and jeffs foot went under the tag.he called him out.
sounds like where begging,we are for someone to just let the boys play,
i always said instead replay in baseball is stupit.its stupit not having it.
the ump have killed many coaches and players careers, look at the late billy martin.
can somebody tell me how these umps are assigned.
are they checked to see what high school they went to,or city they live in now.or what league they ump doing the season.
please let me know.
am i the only one who thinks the umps blow it, love to her from the fans on what they saw .
