Football: Who will be the best quarterback in 2009? I like Rowland's Michael Ball
I know I promised a list of top ten quarterbacks and spring football stuff, but as you can tell baseball and softball is alive and well like it's the first round, plus I have all-area to think about next. But I know all of you have bundles of free time and want to talk about the spring practices you have been at, and the quarterbacks you have seen and expect to see take off next year. So tell us, who should we look out for, and who are the new arms we must pay attention too.
Below: I know Rowland's Michael Ball is in the mix, heck, he might even be the best of all. When you can run, pass and are as athletic as he is, that's a dangerous combination in high school, and he still is only going to be a junior after leading the Raiders to the semifinals last year.

For the record, let's set some facts straight... Coach Austin is a man of personal & professional integrity. He conducted himself with the utmost professionalism during his time at Wilson last season. From the time I have spent around him, he would never do anything to jepordize his current position. Just because a coach has a conversation with a former player does not in any way mean that the person was trying to influence that player. Unless you were present to hear this being discussed then it is hearsay and is potentially slanderous to do so.
As for Gilmore... people say he stayed at Wilson b/c he was "loyal"... nothing could be farther from the truth. He was a primadonna who cared about no one but Tim Gilmore. That's the hard truth. He showed up for 1 spring practice and expected to be hailed as the savior. Fact is, he never instilled any confidence in his teammates who all looked at him as a pariah, they definitely wanted his talent, but not the headaches that came along with it. He was mentally weak and when it came down to it, he was a "me first" guy. If you need any proof, just go back to the game against Schurr when he convulsed & flopped around like a dying fish after he was called out of bounds on what would have been a go ahead TD. The result was a 15yd penalty & they didn't score.
Wilson will be better this year, mostly because of last year's Freshmen team. They went 2-8, but of the first 4 losses, they lost by a total 32 points, or an average of 8 points per game. 3 of those games were without their 3 best players who went to Varisty (one of whom ended up starting over Gilmore by the end of the season... all b/c of his attitude). In their final game of the season, playing with only 17 guys, the Freshmen help Los Altos to 12 points in the 1st half, none of the scoring coming on sustained drives, just busted plays. There is talent & heart at Wilson, & hopefully the new staff there can build upon what was started last year. (BTW... Los Altos Freshmen were the real deal... by far the best team in the entire league last year, and if the current staff handles them correctly, LA will be back on top real soon!)
You can play the blame game all you want, but the fact of the matter is that no one was on the same page from the coaching staff, to the AD (who did his best to sabatoge everything Hoydd tried to accomplish), to the Admin, to the old Booster Club, there was plenty of blame to go around. With any program that has been as downtrodden as the Wildcats have been, patientce is the key. It will not happen overnight, especially if too many people want to have their say in how the program is run.
FYI, Josiah Thropay had taken snaps at the varsity level. I was at several Monrovia games while he was a freshman. He did great when he was in,scored several times. One in particular brought the stands to their feet, first hand off, dropped back and threw a bomb 50 yards and the reciever ran it in another 20-25 yards. I think he will do great, had to sit out last year d/t transfer.
Mark S.
You ask a great question.
"Do I think a kid with no coaching experience will be a good head football coach at the freshmen level ?"
Mark, it's a great question because it shows your ignorance. Explaining why he's qualified dignifies your ignorance and insults Harwell's career.
Next point:
Another great question on your part Mark given your turncoat ways.
Any player who lacks loyalty isn't worth having. Any player who believes he needs to leave and can't...will eventually be a cancer anyway. So maybe you're better off without them. You won't hurt Los Altos Mark, all you'll do is screw up some innocent kid who just want to play. Look at what Gilmore got for his "loyalty"....it's a two way street my friend. Why the hate?
Mark if you have no love for Los Altos I guess you have your reasons. Your hate for Gano is your business. If it's personal in mature and you feel your son was wronged I could understand that but I see no evidence of that from you. Gano did the best he could with what he had...he's a great coach by all accounts..including his record.
I've been to his practices at Damien and they have been outstanding. Given the staff he's assembled, the long time associations he's had over the years and the quality of individual his daughter appears to be I have a hard time understanding your motives. So what is your beef with Gano? That he has students who want to play for him and if they follow thru they excel?
Just look at Matt Casteneda for example instead of Cody, Harwell and Rodriguez who were all certifiable studs, Matt is maybe 5'7" and starts and plays at Whittier College at the QB position? Come on.
Gano has moved on and I suggest you do the same. As far as your comments about Harwell...you are an imbecile. Any, and I mean ANY program would be honored to have Brigham Harwell as a role model for their kids. I strongly urge you to recalibrate your venom and zero in on your intended target without dragging in innocent kids and quality people. Try signing your name from now on...it's liberating experience.
You sound like the guy at the end of the bar in Anywhere USA...who can't seem to stop talking about his ex-wife. Sour grapes my friend...sour grapes.
That's a prety bold statement,
"LA will always be on top of Wilson in every sport!"
But I do have to agree that LA does have a better sports programs than Wilson.
So do you think all the kids over at Wilson should just quit?
That is why LA is staying in Division 6 and Wilson is being dropped down with the new league realignment.
I have a real honest question for you LA football fans, who do you think will be competing for a League title/CIF championships in the next three to four years?
LA,
Miramonte/San Antonio League - Bonita, Diamond Bar, Diamond Ranch, Los Altos, Rowland, Walnut, West Covina
or
Miramonte/San Antonio League - Bonita, South HIlls, Charter Oak, Diamond Bar, Diamond Ranch, Los Altos, Rowland, Walnut, West Covina
Wilson,
Valle Vista League - Baldwin Park, Covina, Nogales, Northview, Pomona, San Dimas, Wilson
Montview League - Azusa, Bassett, Duarte, Ganesha, Gladstone, La Puente, Sierra Vista, Workman
Your football program MAY have more talent than Wilson this year, the next two years LA won't be able to compete with Wilson.
Frank C -
Great post brother! Couldn't agree more!
GRI -
Let me say this one more time for your tiny little brain:
IF YOU HAVE PROOF OF VIOLATIONS BY LOS ALTOS HIGH SCHOOL, GO TO CIF AND FILE A COMPLAINT. Otherwise, everything you are saying is just random bitching by a sorry, pathetic story-teller who wants to drag his old school down with him into the dumps.
And for the record: I have no idea what type of coach Harwell will be. But I know this. He was brought into the program to coach kids. He knows football and is studying to be a teacher. He understands how to relate to kids and is a better human being than most of us. He has overcome obstacles in his life that I couldn't dream of facing. What negative could come out of him being a head coach? I think we lose sight sometimes of what high school athletics is all about. In the end, it's not about winning and losing, it's about building quality young men and women. Harwell is a champion on and off the field. He's got my vote!
Mark Schreiman...It is you! You are something else! You have tried to destroy every youth sports program in Hacienda Heights and now you are trying to do the same with the two high schools? You are classless! Get a clue...everyone knows who you are including the kids and no one respects you! My advice to you...leave it alone! Regardless of what you do LA will always be on top of Wilson in every sport!
Frank C,
Obviously you can't read, Harwell is a great kid. I have nothing but positive comments about him. Do you think a kid with zero coaching experience is qualified to be a head coach of a freshmen program?
My issues are with the way the football program is run at LA. They want to send their coaches to other schools to recruit kids, and then they better expect to get the heat that goes along with it.
What would be your reaction to your cross town rivals coming over to YOUR SCHOOL and attempting to recruit your top freshmen?
Which brings up an interesting rule, Coach Austin coached at Wilson last year. He is now coaching at LA. There is a rule called following your coach. If any child transfers from Wilson to LA even a child taking the freshmen option he maybe ineligible due to the follow your coach rule.
Once again, so there is no confusion Harwell is a great kid. Personally he is my favorite all time LA player.
GRI weren't you "outted"...and yet you sign your name as Gano Recruits ..can't remember what the "I" stands for.
Looked you up and couldn't find your kid on any roster...why is that?
Aren't "you" a LA Alumni?
Dude...I hope to God you have the nuts to go to a Harwell practice. He is one of the finest young men you will ever meet, ROTC in fact, yet you're questioning his motives? Kid had a tryout with the Redskins, graduated form UCLA accomplished as much as he could with his body and has now decided to "give back" to his school...where it all started for him. Do you know his story? I know his brother Brent well and let me tell you...they are welcomed in my house anytime! Damien should be so lucky!
The Harwells have a great family story of over coming incredible odds yet you question his integrity. He has been a main stay for UCLA and a model for achieving against all odds and you minimize his generosity..what gives with you?
All those years in at UCLA with great football minds has to have prepared him to coach at higher levels than LA freshmen ball....or maybe you know more. Ypu're a joke and a hater.
Have the decency to sign your worthless anme when you're willing to crap on people who have accomplished more by 21 than you will in a lifetime.
Mr. SmirksateveryoneAnonymously ...or however you spell you name...
Calling CIF on your Alma Mater....wow. Priceless.
GRI= Get Real Imbecile and stop being a fkn crybaby
LA Insider,
2) Coach Austin was talking to some of his old players from Wilson at the Track Meet (TRUE! What kind of an asshole would he be if he refused to talk to his old players?)
He can talk to them, but when he comes up to two kids and tells them they need to transfer over to LA and then tells the kids to have their parents call him so he can talk to them about it. Then latter in the day he talks to one of the parents. I would call that a little more than talk that crossed the line. You should be real careful here; I sure would hate to see one of your coaches’s especially your head coach suspended for CIF violations because you don't want to look dumb on this blog. Your coaches picked the wrong kids to talk to.
I just read you comment about CIF, I called and talked to Rainer Wulf at CIFSS. He gave me the very simple process to file a complaint. Now be very careful being that we are talking about multi people that Coach Austin talked to, Mr. Wulf made it very clear they would move forward on this. Please reply to this entry if you would like me to prove these comments.
Now as far as Harwell goes, great kid, and I mean a great kid. But you sound like an idiot,
"You can't judge Harwell's ability to coach because like you said, he's never coached before."
Tell it how it is, Harwell is there to bring in the kids, the real head coach was hired about two months ago; he's the janitor over at Workman High School.
Ex-Wilson Guy,
They are currently running spread offense. With the smaller kids he is running a ball control version of the spread. Short passes and run plays. Zavala has made it very clear the offense is going to be built around the players. He really seams like he knows what he is doing.
Oh, and if you DO have any facts about Los Altos recruiting, why don't you go to CIF? Take all these people you claim to know who can PROVE this happened and scurry on down to Los Alamitos and file a claim. Otherwise, just shut up. You sound like my dog who whines and cries and wants to come back in when I put her outside.
Here are the "facts" that you provided for us:
1) Coach Curtis is no longer on our coaching staff (TRUE! He left two years ago when Gano left.)
2) Coach Austin was talking to some of his old players from Wilson at the Track Meet (TRUE! What kind of an asshole would he be if he refused to talk to his old players?)
3) A young man with the last name of Sanchez played freshman ball at LA three years ago. (TRUE! He played, yes he did)
EVERYTHING else you claim in your post is hearsay and conjecture. You have no way to back up any of the claims about recruiting. You can't judge Harwell's ability to coach because like you said, he's never coached before. We have no idea what he'll be like.
Answer me this...why does a pathetic, bitter old Conqueror reject like you take so much interest in Los Altos Football? Why do you claim to know so much about the going ons here at LA? Can't you move on? You and your son didn't fit in here. You chose to go somewhere else. End of story. But instead you choose to drag yourself and your kid through the muddy waters of your sad pathetic bitterness. I feel sorry for you sir. I truly do.
Thanks! Please tell me we are running I-Back or something with good ball control. With a small young team, I hope Coach Zavala doesn't just start airing it out.
Ex-Wilson Guy,
The spring game was last friday. The team is small and very young, only a hand full of returning seniors. Coach Zavala had ten to twelve coaches out their today working with the kids. The kids really seem to respect the coaching staff.
Coaching Staff 1st 6 week grade A+.
Real Question. Not seeing Wilson since last year, and at the horrible Sonora game, how do things look for next year? Talent? Coaching? etc. What is the word from Spring, and when is our Spring game?
LA Insider,
Just like I said, you talk a lot crap with no facts to back it up.
I back my comments up with facts and what is your response.
"I'm not going to respond to any of that garbage because now that we know who you are, we know it all holds no weight."
Great response ........
Nevermind...it IS your fault! Choosing to be an A$$HOLE is always your own fault!
I'm not going to respond to any of that garbage because now that we know who you are, we know it all holds no weight.
Do you have any idea how pathetic you sound coming on here to spread rumors with your childish attempts to destroy the school that destroyed your vicarious dreams? I mean seriously, this is like epicly sad man. They make movies about people like you. Pathetic.
LA Insider,
O well you figured out who I am, just about all of Hacienda Heights knows who GRI is. It's not like I talk a lot of crap and hide behind a screen like ...... YOU......
By the way stick to the subject, I will keep it real simple,
1) Do you think Harwell will make a good head coach with zero coaching experience, at any level?
2) Felipe is attempting to recruit with no success (no Coach Curtis), true of false?
Before you answer that one talk to your DC and ask him what he was doing at the LA/Wilson track meet. Multi kids and parents from Wilson have come forward with his comments.
Then you can call up Sanchez, you know who I am talking about, the quarterback that played at LA three years ago on the freshmen team. According to Sanchez's current head coach Felipe promised Sanchez the starting job if he transferred back to LA. I bet the Zamona's family would love to look into that one. If the Zamona family would like to look into this I believe I have Sanchez's mothers phone number from our Pop Warner days.
Let's see if you can stay focused and reply to the comments.
LA insider,
The kids from LA are telling the Wilson kids that they are going to compete for a CIF championship next year, according to Felipe Aguilar. Since you are the LA insider why don't give us your insite on Felipe's prediction.
Personally it sounds like Felipe has been taken some of those durgs your finding on those football players.
GRI,
You reminder of a whiner I know by the name of Schreiman...are you one in the same? If so...that explains your convoluted logic!
GRI,
Who hurt you? It's okay. It's not your fault. You hear me son......It's not your fault. You understand? It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. Not your fault.
"Looks like Felipe Aguilar hasn't learned from Gano's mistakes."
&
"But Felipe doesn't have Coach Curtis so he isn't going to be recruiting like Gano."
Make up your mind already. You can't have it both ways. LOL
What do you care anyways? Didn't you run off with your kid to the "promised land" of Wilson High?
LA Insider,
I have to step in on this one. Harwell is a great kid. If he is coaching the freshmen team at LA it is for recruiting purposes not coaching.
Looks like Felipe Aguilar hasn't learned from Gano's mistakes. You’re going to rebuild a program you need to start at the freshmen level. So I guess if your son is a defensive lineman send him to LA. If your son is a RB, WR, QB, or a DB do not expect him to learn anything at LA.
But Felipe doesn't have Coach Curtis so he isn't going to be recruiting like Gano. So now the freshmen kids at LA will get a shot at playing at the varsity level. You may suck, but you will play.
Michael Ball over at Rowland is an Athletic not a quarterback. When this tread opened up I talked to two different head coaches that played against this kid. They both laughed then said he is an athletic not a quarterback. Based on what I have been told about the program Ball doesn't have a chance, no coaching. If I was his dad I would spend some money and send his son to a real quarterback coach, so he can learn how to play the position.
McClanahan isn't a GREAT quarterback, but what he is is a winner who has the intangibles it takes to lead a team and perform well against the best! I like the kid from Rowland too. He needs to learn a lot and he's kinda small but the kid can make things happen. Thropay should be a awesome this year. Has he learned to compete? That will be the question.
Return to glory? What glory, ya didn't win anything last year...

Baltierra played his freshmen year, that was his first and only year at tackle football. He isn't 5'3", he is about 5'5", still real small. He did do a very good job his freshmen year. He hasn't thrown a football in a year and a half. He has a good shot at be the starting quarterback, but to even be talk about him on this thread is at best a joke.

How about damiens guillen with gano as coach he should have a great year and has a cannon for an arm. Also, at CO home grown soph Santiago may get the spot over the others.
And how about D ranch Viramontes, a great athlete whose time has come.
I saw Glendora's JV QB [Chad Jefferies] last year vs West Covina, the kid was impressive in both running the ball & passing, although untested at the varsity level, with his size & athletic ability he should have a big year next season.
to intheknow, u judge Baltierra by his height but he is a gamer and u would know that if u saw him play and i hope he comes out to play because he will prove alot of people wrong!!!
Last I heard, Vega is struggling to maintain a 1.60 GPA! Funny how he was allowed to play soccer and run JV track, which by the way...he did not do well with either sport!
from my understanding Baltierra has not been at school for the past week or two because of a Broken Foot he suffered in his Cif baseball game last week but people have told me that he will be in football the start of summer camp if he is there Baltierra and Moses Vega could be a strong scary duo to other teams
from my understanding Baltierra has not been to school in about a week or two because of broken foot he suffered in in his Cif baseball game last week but people have told me that he will be in football the start of summer camp

WTH,
you are back! Hey good luck with your 5'3" quarterback! LOL!
Brigham Harwell as the freshman is not going to much unless he plans to play. Look at Felipe Aguilar a Gano follower is horrible.
Interesting...you are a typical drive by hater!
Get a clue before you talk through your a@@!
Interesting,
I believe Harwell was cut by the Redskins
Los Altos/Wilson.....same thing :) He wouldn't be coaching freshman if he was there.
Insider: That would be great if Harwell coached. But here is my question. HOW THE HELL IS HE GOING TO COACH IF HE SIGNED AS A FREE AGENT WITH THE REDSKINS?
You are a clown unless he is giving up the NFL. Also why would he coach at Wilson when he is from Bell Gardens and everyone who coached and recruited him are gone? FOOL!
Freddy,
You need to place a call to Felipe Aguilar at Los Altos High School. Word around school is the new Head Freshman coach at LA this year will be Brigham Harwell!
Local Freshmen parents, take note! This is a guy who was not only a stud on the field but also won the Coack K Award at UCLA for Character! Who better to help our young men grow as a quality player?
-The Insider
glendora= chad jeffiers
size, knows the system.look for a big year
out of the QB
go tarts
c.o kelley knows the game. comes from a stronge family football back round. its going to be a great year. watching all of are kids from the glendora jr. all american team playing in there jr. and senior years..thanks again MRandMRS vega.henry and all the coaches. never replace those times in are babys lifes.god bless you all.
kenny huth
Baltierra will be a junior next year - and it would be nice to see just what he could do - but he has not been to football a single practice as yet, nor even been seen on the sideline with the team
Over and out Guru,
Shut up I know its you! Rule #2
Hey i know San Dimas is flying under
the radar since supposedly they graduated a lot of kids, but they have two superb sophmores next year with a high cealing plus some talent to help the wing fly high. and if need be, just stick their 6 foot 5 giant junior back there to hand off. san dimas is going to come out and surprise people with a huge match up week 3 against monrovia which could be a potential finals matchup next year in the midwest. and with San Dimas's DC last year now at monrovia, he was as useless as tits on wart hog, it could be a very intriguing matchup...
Steven Baltierra, Yeah I heard Zavala likes that kid for his future QB. Definetly QB material smart and fast. I don't see anyone beating him out on the JV or Varsity level!
I watch Mcclanahans games aginst Orange Luthern Crespi and Long Beach Poly how can anybody in the sgv be listed ahead of him? Tell me if their is any qb in the area that plays those kind of teams, wins twice and loses a hartbreaker to D 1 champs Poly,
yes i knew somebody would say that he is to small and wen i was saw him i was thinking the same thing but the kid does have a heck of a arm and heard he did run a 40 in 4.6 and wen u can run and throw u could have a successful season......he might not be the best QB but im just saying watch out
Are you serious? Baltierra is about 5'-3'...best upcoming quarterback?
Bishop Amats Jerry Maclanahan is the top rated QB in the SGV IMO. He will be back as a senior and altho he is not in spring sessions right now due to Baseball this 6'1 QB has a arm and some good accuracy to go with it. Jerry was outstanding in wins over Orange Lutheran, St. Francis and Crespi last year and came up just a little short in that playoff game at Veterans Stadium against powerhouse Long Beach Poly.
Charter Oak has Thropay and Brown. Neither has taken a snap at the varsity level but both are prototype kids. Both are at least 6'4" with strong arms. Thropay has gotten the most hype so far and Brown has the athletic blood lines.
Chad Jeffries for sure from Glendora. he is amazing
this kid last year could have started as a sophomore on any team around the area.
he was behind a great quaterback Drew Kaluzny last year and the next two years he will shine.
this might be out of the blues but Wilson does have a sophomore coming up next year in Steven Baltierra .......u might have heard his name in the paper for baseball but he does play football and can be a playmaker at the QB position by throwing or running
