Baseball: Let's revist your ballots for Tribune first-team all-area choices and the MVP

| | Comments (66) |

With so many teams performing well late in the season, you will probably not see as many teams with two or three players on the first team, which make it even more difficult. Basically what we try and do is put together the best 12, which includes the player of the year and 11 on the first team. Infielders are not by position, they're the best four infielders, period.

Player of the Year: ?
First team
Pitcher: (2); Catcher: (1); Infielders: (4); Outfielder: (3); Utility: (1)

Below: We will try to avoid co-players of the year, but last year was unavoidable. Who could forget these two, Marc Andrade and Jordan Fox.

Good Luck on Monday.

Brad said:

It's good to see that the San Dimas fans support their shortstop but to compare him to Mier is just plain absurd. Have any of you seen Mier in person? He's a 6'2 stud with a major league arm, he runs like a deer and hits for power. Jensen's a good high school shortstop that's it. Mier is going to play, yes he will play, shortstop at a D1 college, namely USC and he will be drafted next week...neither of which will happen for Jensen. But, Jensen gets to play at Angel stadium on Saturday and he certainly has that over Mier, but this is a team thing not a reflection of who is the best player.

I guess numerous scouts per game and the leading cross checkers are out in force for their health. Did your boy attend any major invites this weekend, or in past months. Still haven't seen him at any, and I've been at alot of them.

ya APU is one of the best NAIA team in the country. got knocked out this year because lack of pitching. hes going there because he wants to hit and pitch and play first. horrible feet? no fielding errors i can think of. all these kids play at the "cracker box" field. how many other players in the valley have numbers like him that HIT, PITCH, and FIELD. None. Not a Pac-10 player because he wanted to go to APU. he for sure had offers to other places but played for an APU coach before. Not ready for minors? during a game at cracker box field heard a scout say if he hits another hr im signing him. next at bat hit a HR. sorry but a homerun is a homerun. leyland is to slow.
plowman - hits for power, pitches hard, fields good, can hit and pitch in the same game with confidence. kids hard as nail. all these people hating on him are wasting their time. i know it wont effect him. he loves the hatred everyone gives him. keep it going and next thing you know he will be playing at Angel Stadium

Take a look at the OCVarsity.com blog. It's staff writer predicts Bonita and Charter Oak in the Div III Semifinals. Orange County observers apparently respect the ability of Charter Oak players. CO and Bonita played four games this season. They split 2-2. CO outscored Bonita in those four games 14-10. CO has players who can hit and run. Their pitching is strong every year for the past three years. Charter Oak vs Beckman should be a good one to watch today. The winner has a real shot at winning it all. It would be fun to see CO and Bonita meet in the finals. It could also provide an objective look at several potential all-area players.

Don said:

Problem with doing this now is we still have a week left for some of these kids to perform miracles. A kid like Plowman could win another game or two and hit another couple dingers before the fat lady sings out at the Big A. On the other hand, we're not seeing much love for some Tartan stars who took an early exit, are we. So while we wait for Brünnhilde's ballad, here goes:

POY: Hard to beat Plowman right now. Josh Leyland has had an amazing run at the plate this year but he's probably seen the last of the tools of ignorance once he moves up and it's hard to argue with Jason's ERA and the W's he'll bring to the race. Mier is from another galaxy, way far away. He defensively gloves balls other kids couldn't touch if they were shot out of a cannon. For this argument though, Jio just didn't see enough good pitches this season to do the damage he is capable of.

For my money, Jake Bailey is hard to beat given his performance both offensively and defensively as a Catcher. He has, at times this season, carried the Chargers. McClanahan is fine, and a damn sight bigger, but Bailey is the best of the crew from Covina Blvd.

Jury still out. My “have” Pitchers are (in no particular order) Calderero, Zuniga, Whitehouse, and Klena. The guys who last longest get the nod.

IF's are Mier, Pedroza, Jensen, and Arnold

OF's are Smigelski, Gelalich, and Garcia

Utility is Leyland

Fred, To just look at Stats without factoring competition is useless. The Sierra League is tougher than others, by far. Look at who they play. It would be wrong not to have these players included;
Licon - Diamond Ranch IF - LMU
Garcia - Damien OF - Vanguard
Whitehouse - Damien LHP - U C Irvine
Mier - Bonita SS - USC
Plutko - Glendora RHp
These are great players who deserve all area status. Any team without them would have no credability at all. Don't let parents fron one or two schools flood you with messages for kids that are not as deserving.

SD Fan said:

The only thing we as bloggers have to go on are the stats posted on Maxpreps. Suddenly the stats on Bonita disappeared so unfortunately for Nico he is out of the running for one of the two pitchers spots. With so many good pitchers this year I think Fred should add an extra one or two to the All-SGV team. Here are the leaders in the SGV:

Wins
1. Salcido 10-1
1. Zuniga 10-1
3. Whithouse 9-2
4. Paez 9-3

ERA
1. Zuniga 1.58
2. Salcido 1.68
3. Paez 1.76
4. Whitehouse 2,99

Strikeouts
1. Paez 102
2. Whitehouse 87
3. Zuniga 76
4. Salcido 74

So if we add up the scores with the lowest total being the best here's how the pitchers stand right now. A lot could change in the next week and a half.

Zuniga 5
Salcido 7
Paez 8
Whitehouse 9

J. Gelalich does not belong anywhere on this list. He had a mediocre season at best. What is up with all this San Dimas crap? They play in a sh*&&y league. Leyland is good, but not POY material. Leave Plowman alone, kids will be kids. Kid has grown up and wants to move on, why can't everyone else. Two names I don't see much of are Nico Calderaro and Whitehouse. They both are better than any pitchers mentioned. KH what up?

Don't over look this SS said:

Thanks to all of you who are listing Jenson (San Dimas)as one of the infielders.

He is a great kid, and player, but doesn't get the pub that some of the other players get (and they are all great). He has worked very hard and is having an incredible season.
For those of you who leave SS Thomas Jenson off the list because you haven't seen him play. ok. But don't leave him off the list because you think the teams in the in the Valle Vista League are weak.

Here are his combined stats (you can look it up) against the following legit teams;
Chino Hills, Los Altos, Bonita, Northview (3 games), Nogales, Glendora, St. Frances, and Beverly Hills.

B.A. = .488 (.510 overall)
AB's = 41 ( 100 overall)
Hits = 20 ( 51 overall)
2B = 8 ( 13 overall)
Runs = 10 ( 35 overall)
Rbi's= 8 ( 27 overall)

He ranks in the top 10 in each of these catagories.

This includes 8 for 10 against defending champion Northview. How many players could do that?

So far in two CIF games he is 5 for 8 with a triple and 2 runs scored.

All of this as a lead-off hitter, (one of the most difficult and demanding positions in a batting order), and get this, as those who have been lucky enough to watch him play have, the best part of his game is defense.

He is quiet and humble, but he is the real deal!

Again, thanks to all of you who are listing him.

What a pathetic little life someone must have to feel the need to anonymously bash a teenage kid.

What's the matter Winnie? Didn't get enough attention from your own daddy? Mommy didn't made you suck a rubber nipple? Here's a hint: spend the money, see a shrink. Those unresolved anger issues are making your outlook toxic.

People think you're an ass too.

Well considering Paez doesn't hit he accounted for 9 wins for Bishop Amat. Amat has 25 wins so they obviously can win without him. Paez doesn't even lead the team in wins or innings pitched. This just proves my case that Leyland should be player of the year.

Stop bashing on Plowman. The kid has grown out of that. Look how he has been since then. Flawless. All kids make mistakes. So dont think your litte jonny is perfect. Plowman or Mier for POY

If Plowman wins he'll have stolen it from Mier, but then again he does have a habit of stealing from his team mates. Sticking to baseball we all know he can pitch, he can hit and hit for power but can he steal? Yes. Plowman is a four tool player. I vote for Mier with Paez a close second and Leyland third based on his value to the team. Could Bonita win without Jio? Could Bishop Amat win without Paez? Could San Dimas win without Leyland?

I like how you claim everyone is bashing Mier and are defending him and you turn around and quote "Leyland is a below avergae catcher,avg arm, and is very slow." Is this not bashing and can you show me where anyone in here has bashed Mier like this. It's called facts and the fact of the matter is Leyland has put up by far better numbers than anyone around so clearly this makes him the POY. If Leyland was not at San Dimas this team would suffer much more than if Mier was not with Bonita. Facts are facts. And we dont want to here you lies that you arent a San Dimas or Bonita fan. Get out of here

Hold On said:

The POY award is not for the best pro prospect. It is for the kid who put together the best year for the SGV. That is clearly Leyland. No one is bashing Mier. In fact he will probably go farther than anyone on the list. Realisticly we only have 2 pro prospects right now in the SGV. They are Gio Mier and Rio Ruiz. So here goes my All-SGV.

POY - Plowman

9HR's on the season, including a grandslam against a pitcher with one of the lowest ERA's around. Has the power to go yard and an arm to go the distance. A lot easier to come from behind the plate(Leyland) and hit than off the mound, let's be real here.

Take off your blinders and look around, facts are fats. Meir is the reason his RBI's are high? If the 1-2 batters would have gotten on more his RBI's would be double; fact!

How many guys can hit a grandslam and pitch 5 innings for a win in a CIF game? Enough said...

MVP said:

Leyland is without a doubt the best hitter in the SGV. His numbers prove it, but for PLAYER of the year,he does not win this. He is a below avergae catcher,avg arm, and is ver slow. You need to have the all around "tools" I should say to win player of the year so therefore Jio Mier from Bonita should take this. i am neither an SD fan nor a BHS fan but I have seen both these players play and Mier stands out to be hands down the player of the year. College Scholarship to a great program, and has had at least 10 major league scouts there every game. I saw them play out at Los Altos earlier in the year and there was easily 20-25 BIG NAME scouts there. This kid is going to be something special, yes his bat needs to improve but still he is a great player. Parents, fans (like me),players, coaches should really support this kid instead of bashing him like i have seen. He's a player coming out of the SGV and for people to say bad things about him, is not right.

MVP, is a one person award! Lets get it right. Leyland has a good stick, but just a pretty good defensive player with no wheels. Plowman can pitch, his power numbers are huge, but so are his offensive K's. Mier is a play maker on both sides of the game. Can hit for power and does hit for avg. Wheels, rocket arm and game sense to go with it. If he's on base, he's a threat. There are several SS, who could make a legitimate case at being the best, but Mier is the real deal. Too many tools. If Mier didn't play SS, he'd be the best pitcher in the valley hands down. Leyland, Pedroza, RJ Arnold, Plowman, Bailey and I'm sure several more who I didn't name can really play this game, but Jio's got this! No CO-just 1!

Look at the numbers, they simply don't lie.

Agree that Meir will have a shot in the MLB. Great glove and makes some outstanding plays like the OZ did back in the day!

Big question for Meir, can his bat keep pace. Very streakie hitter this year. Next levels of play very different than HS.
