Mt. SAC area realignment appeals heard: South Hills, Glendora pass; Charter Oak, Rowland denied. Next up, Executive Council
Glendora: Won its appeal to move back to the Sierra League, which would make the Sierra league a six-team league with South Hills moving out. The Sierra would be Glendora, Charter Oak, Chino Hills, Ayala, Damien/St. Lucy's and Claremont.
South HIlls: Won its appeal to be moved back to the Miramonte/San Antonio League, which would make it an eight team league along with Bonita, Diamond Bar, Diamond Ranch, Los Altos, Rowland, Walnut, West Covina.
Charter Oak - Lost its appeal to reorganize the Sierra League and/or move down to the Miramonte/San Antonio League, which only would have worked if Rowland moved down to the Valle Vista.
Rowland - Lost its appeal to move down to the Valle Vista and make it an eight-team league.
Note: There also was a proposal voted down that would have included moving Charter Oak and South Hills to the Miramonte/San Antonio, with Glendora going to the Sierra league and Rowland going down to the Valle Vista league without moving other teams that are already in place. That proposal lost 5-3.
Fred's thought: This would have been the proposal that satisfied all four parties, however when a committee member asked if anyone on the floor objected, only one raised their hand, Diamond Ranch principal Monica Principe. "I do not support it," Principe said of allowing Charter Oak and South Hills into the Miramonte/San Antonio League, making it a seven-team league with Rowland moving to the Valle Vista. "It would make it very difficult for us to compete."
What's next: This is far from over. The original proposal and the proposal that was passed at the CIF-Southern Section Releaguing Committee on Wednesday now goes to the executive council May 20. Charter Oak and Rowland have the right and probably will file an appeal to the Executive council to be heard again.

Quotes from Wednesday's Hearing.
Rowland principal Robbie Robinson was the most visibly upset, noting his school should have been granted relief to the Valle Vista to form an eight-team league. Rowland struggled to compete in the existing San Antonio league, and will have an ever harder time in the proposed San Antonio/Miramonte League. "You need to look deeper, look at our demographic make-up, we're 79 percent Hispanic and Asian," Robinson told the panel. "Our girls sports are struggling. The only reason I think we were put in this league is because our football team went to the semifinals in CIF for the first time since 1964. Everyone looks at the power sports, but that's just one year." Robinson also didn't hide his feelings regarding the voting process among Mt. SAC-area principals that led to Wednesday's appeals. "I'm appalled at the politics that went on," Robinson said. "(Principals) started meeting in groups, that's why it took 4 1/2 hours to finish. We happened to be the odd team out."
Glendora principal Kelly Bruce successfully argued to the Committee that none of the three criteria under consideration for realignment were met.
Bruce pointed out that in the last three years, Glendora sports across the board have finished fourth among teams in the Sierra League, behind Ayala, Damien and Chino Hills, all schools that are also closer in proximity to Baseline teams.
"Closer examination demonstrates that Glendora's placement in the Baseline League also flies in the face of geography," Bruce wrote in his appeal. "In the Sierra league, travel for Glendora averaged 23 miles per round trip. Travel for Glendora in the Baseline League would average 34.2 miles per round trip.
"To further compound our frustration, Glendora's placement in the Baseline contradicts school enrollment. The current average enrollment of school's comprising the Baseline is 3,183 students. Glendora's enrollment number is 2,483 students.
Afterward, Bruce was happy with the decision, but cautions the fight is far from over.
"We were requesting relief, and ended up in a tougher league," Bruce said. "We understand if we don't get relief, but this seemed punitive. The guidelines are very clear, so we did our best to address the three criteria and I felt like we had a very unbiased panel that heard our argument on not being a fit in the Baseline based on that criteria."

Joe it funny on the one hand people call you a "know it all" and on the other...when they are stumped..."they ask YOU" what do you think...lol
It' happened more than a few times...I've hear Brando do :
"STTTTTTTTEEEEEELLLLLLAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
maybe it's time for:
"JJJJJJJJJJOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYY?????????????"
Can someone please tell me why they can't make a new league?
Joe amat? Is it that much of a problem?
the principal didn't insult anyone, the same things have been said at Temple City, South Marino and South Pasadena, all schools that were great in sports in the 70s and 80s, but can't compete in football or basketball anymore because the schools are largely asian. Why can't we just be honest, name a largely populated school with a high asian demographic that's won CIF football or basketball championships?
My fault Mt. Baldy would become a 6 team not 8 team league.
I like this appeal. Rowland could go to the VVL. No big deal. But as this stands it makes more sense. However, Baseline League cannot be a 5 team league. That will cause problems from a travel and economic standpoint. Since none of the IE leagues are in the same boat they will not be able to fill those odd games unlessthey go all over SO CAL.
Somebody said that a new Fontana school will go in the league. People, stop throwing out ideas as facts. Fontana schools are not part of the Mt Sac Area. They will not be placed in a league that is West of the 15 freeway. In fact I beleive they are already going in the League with Bloomington in 2010. Also the CJUHSD will not be building any new schools until 2012 at the earliest. Declining enrollment.
The ONLY solution is to move Colony into the Baseline League. The Basketball Coach and Football Coach want this. Colony has won League Titles the last 4 years in Boys and Girls basketball. They have won at least 1 CIF title each in both boys and girls basketball as well.
They have won 2 of the last 3 league titles in football as well as 2 CIF titles. They have been to the CIF playoffs in football the last four years.
They have won back to back league titles in boys and girl's track and field (08 and 09) The school has only had 4 graduating classes. Nobody in the League the last four years even comes close. Sounds like dominance to me. Sounds like an easy solution to the problem. Why hasn't anyone even discussed it?
If that is done the Baseline becomes a 6 team league.
Sierra - 6
Miramonte - 8
VVL - 7 w/ Edgewood (hopefully someday) - 8
Montview - 8
Mt. Baldy - 8
While I agree with you in spirit I believe he was talking about Football and Basketball. How many of them are pros or for that matter D 1 in those sports?
Remember - Football and Basketball butter the bread at most if not all schools.
Wow! Rowlands Principal stating that 79% of their students are Hispanic or Asian, so they need relief!
What! Hispanics and Asians can't play like or better than White students???
I need to inform all those Hispanics and Asians in the wide world of sports right away. Gotta find another league for the Dodgers, Angels, and whew, almost forgot golf, and colleges, well, better do something fast. Hey! Manny, you gotta go Dude. You too, Santana, Gurrerro, Suzuki, A-Rod, vamoose, now.
So many good athletic high school kids of every color, race, and creed, and this idiot spouts off like that. Maybe better coaches might solve your dilemma. But, make sure they are not other than!
School and CIF officials are more ignorant than I could ever imagine in this day and age.
So, the the most acceptable compromise to the four appealing schools gets shot down because the CIF agrees with Diamond Ranch's Monica Principe's argument that it would be very difficult for them to compete with Charter Oak and South Hills. What garbage. Did CIF officials (conveniently?) forget that D'Ranch lost to Northview 1-0 in the Baseball FINALS last year, lost to Charter Oak in this years football FINALS and in basketball went undefeated in league (beating Charter Oak badly both games) and then went 3 rounds deep into CIF?
I don't think South Hills belongs in the new league. Talk about a school that recruits.
THIS COMMENT DOES NOT RELATE TO THIS ISSUE, BUT SINCE THE TRIBUNE DOES NOT PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT ON THE QUESTION OF THE DAY, I WILL POST IT HERE.
THE QUESTION OF THE DAY WAS WHETHER INSTITUTIONS CONTRIBUTING TO THE ECONOMIC DOWNFALL SHOULD BE PROSECUTED. MY ANSWER WOULD BE "ONLY IF THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS THAT WERE THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS WERE PROSECUTED". The Tribune did not provide the opportunity to express this position.
Joe, that says it all!
A topic much debated on this very blog, but seemingly never talked about in a public forum:
"You need to look deeper, look at our demographic make-up, we're 79 percent Hispanic and Asian," Robinson told the panel.
I wonder what the reaction was to Principal Robinson's comment in these meetings.
Fred?
please,
a far cry from this mentality
http://tinyurl.com/ctls7u
so does your dad ! opps !
so does your mom !.ouch
The great Charter Oak wants to play in a lesser league? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, couldn't be. Not them. Not the great Charter Oak with all that talent and great coaching. Say it ain't so! BUMS! Always have been and always will be! PERIOD
"the'Wood slides right in there." That's what I like to hear.
What a perv.
Nothing beats Yul Brenner as a cowboy...Acid Classic !!!!
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN !!!!!
Joe,
I think there was a remake made not that long ago of that movie/Theatre production, but I have to tell you that my all time favorite, was the one which stared Yul Brynner.
Classic...
I thought 5 teams leagues were a thing of the past. Someone please, maybe you Fred, explain why the Baseline league is again 5 teams? From the looks of things, and if you factor in what prompted the appeal, it looks like a team from the Mt. Baldy League will almost certainly have to fill that space. Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to be shaping up that way.
There are some 4 team leagues out there. Those guys are probably happy it's a 5 team league. They still get the same 3 playoff spots that they'd get with a 6 team league. We're happy we're finally getting a 5th team -now we get 3 spots for 5 teams instead of 2 spots for 4.
This actually is a pretty good compromise and allows for future growth. CIF has been alerted that Edgewood may re-open - so an odd number in the Valle Vista is perfect [ the 'Wood slides right in there.
In the IE a new school is opening in Fontana ( Jurupa Hills), and Chaffey JUHSD has one planned. So two odd numbered leagues allow for additions there as well. (although two 6 team leagues would make sense too)
Of course it wouldn't be a releaguing post if I didn't say that this sets things up perfectly for an Association setup - particularly in the SGV. South Hills stays put - but if they or WC or BoHi run the table in football for a couple years - they could slide into the Sierra - and trade with Claremont or anyone else that may be a two year cellar-dweller. Walnut (which has been in the Sierra before) could bump up in the sports they fare well in.
As the King said, "etc, etc, etc!"
when are they going to put Colony in the Baseline. Can't have a 5 team league. Colony is the logical solution don't you think?
Glad to see S. Hills back, I didn't want to see the SH vs WC rivalry broken up, I'm a bit surprised though cause I didn't think S.Hills had much of an argument against their placement in the Sierra league, could be something to this follow the money theory. I agree with Aron that the new Miramonte/San Antonio will be a tough league. With these eight teams, the title will not come easy in this league, and the teams will beat up on each other trying to win one, in most years the Sierra will be a little tougher, but in some years I could see this league being as good as the Sierra.
When will Damien stop getting a pass? Can we finally put them in the Serra/Mission/Del Rey League association.
Sierra League isn't looking too bad to GHS these days. Funny how happy the Tartans are to be back in the Sierra. Just a few days/weeks ago G-high was begging to get out. Today they're counting their blessings to be back in. I guess the grass is always greener.
Happy to keep the Tartans in the Sierra.
Stay Positive.
My father...would be very happy about having an eight team league...except that not everyone is in an eight team league. Therefore it makes no sense, however the Miramonte is now basically a power league, competitive equity, everyone is going to be dead at the end of the season. I wonder what Coach Podley is saying now...or even Robert Ketterling. As a Bonita fan I feel that we get whacked about with football because everything else is that much better. Definitely going to miss those games against Charter Oak.
HELL YEAH!
Could it be this easy? I don't think so, but why not make a new league?
Consisting of...
Glendora
South Hills
Charter Oak
Diamond Ranch
Bonita
Maybe one more school if possible. I don't get why can't they just make a new league?
I dont understand. The fact that Glendora is back in the sierra is going to be the best thing thats happened to this area. Can you imagine the rivalries this is going to take place. Charter Oak, Glendora, Damien, and Southills have been rivals amongst each other for years. Now they are in the same league. Everygame is going to look like the homecoming game. I think CIF is smart in doing this. Not only that but it forces Pasquerella with Glendora to play charter oak after not signing a contract saying they played too dirty and caused to many injuries. On top of that its going to make this area prime fishing for college scouts with so many talented teams in the same league. If Damien can get back to prominence like it was 3 years ago this league is going to be a league to be reconded with when playoff time comes.
Follow the money....
Right on !!!!!!
1. regional rivalry
2. competitive equity and finance
CIF,wake up high school sport fans.CIF (cash is first)time and time again ,The rules surve the familys with the cash, Most of these guys in charge coulden't get attention in the real world. There power tripping, holding the rules to those that are to busy working ,While those with the cash kick there @ss!!. CIF reminds me of that shameful saying . Black is beautiful,Brown is grand, but white is the color of the old boss mann!!.Think what you may nothing has changed,no matter your shade its the white way.Follow the money..
Everyone
The only thing CIF cares about is the OCCCCC
That's the people running it.Good luck SGV your going to need it.
End of story
Joe
i agree there are some very valid points to make, also i agree about the (juice)! but i guess is no change. hope i'm wrong.
FB Fan, or maybe you missed the part where I said, "especially among public schools." See, you can make an extreme silly statement, but it doesn't solve anything.
FBFan, if you have been paying attention, I talked about a Sierra League comprising of area teams that would include Diamond Ranch, West Covina, South Hills, Glendora, Charter Oak and Damien. If you want to be a knucklehead and and make ridiculous statements, go ahead. What I suggest combines competitive equity with geography and enrollment. You tell me what's wrong with that.
Alignment should be strictly geographical, especially among the public schools. Shouldn't break up those regional rivalries. I just don't think it makes sense for a team to play in a league with teams that are completely foreign. Glendora should not be playing against teams like Etiwanda and Rancho and whoever else is out there. There is just something special about playing against the local teams and the bragging rights and hometown pride that comes along with it. The local games and rivalries (theoretically) encourage the community aspect that makes high school athletics much more exciting.
The private schools can have their own leagues that are fairly geographical as well. I am okay with a few exceptions here and there, like Damien in the Sierra as we currently have. But the privates often find themselves on a different playing field than the publics, whether it be a higher or lower level. Private schools are unique, they can compete in separate leagues.
Keep it traditional and keep it geographical.
Fred, are you saying that Bishop Amat should be in the same league as La Puente, Workman, and Basset?
Not sure I follow Fred. Do you want a FOOTHILLL CONFERENCE?
playallday, that's what people are missing, they're so caught up in competitive equity, they forget that leagues should keep teams as close in proximity as they can. This helps parents, fans, travel budgets, local rivalries, and it gives student/athletes more study time. Competitive equity is more important for playoff divisions, not league. But I know, it's all about winning, and it's all about football.
nobody gets it,
ghs parents would rather be in a league of truly
local teams so we can get to more games of every sport, we really dont care who we play as long as it is easy to get to. chartor oak, south hills, west covina, san dimas, bonita anywhere local

CIF is really sad. If you look at this re-leaguing stuff, they are only concerned with football matchups. Yes, I know that football brings in the dough. However, I though CIF was governing all sports! Fred, you aren't much better. There is more to high school life than football. When did we stop being concerned about ALL students. CIF needs to understand that football isn't the only sport they govern. I think that the talk should start up again about leaving CIF and forming our own governing body for high school sports. I think the $$ has gone to their head!
Is this meeting open to the public? Or do you need press credentials?
One problem I see with changing the Glendora situation is it'll only play into the belief that the biggest crybabies always have the most money and cry teh loudest...and then get their way!
Maybe Glendora needs to be out of the Sierra and in Charter Oak's league. Across the board...how would Glendora's football, basketball, baseball, track, softball and soccer teams do?
Is it competitive equity they seek or continued athletic elitism?
That's the question I have. Look at the coaches in their big three sports....I think Glendora will always field very solid teams...now if teh argument is financial "burden"...Glendora falls flat on it's "wallet"..so to speak. If it's argument is "time on the bus and a burden" to Bobby and Sissy...well welcome to the "Real World"...and get in line. A lot of schools travel farther to compete and have a lot less $$$$.
Either way...most G-High Alumni I've spoken to say.."Nut up, Shut Up and PLAY!!!!"
Besides...Damien and Glendora could always schedule a preseason game.
I will have my computer with me, just as easy to do live updates.
But Fred - that's why you get the big bucks!
You already tweet your headlines. Which is easier on my phone (The new blog takes much longer to load and ends up with a green background - but oh well)
Seriously, it's just texting to the masses - you could update from your phone during the meeting.
I'd just love to be a fly on the wall during this one!
Glendora & the rest of the schools need to just sack up & hit the ground RUNNING !
FIGHT ON
TM
I spend enough time blogging, if I start Twittering, what's next.
rgd2626,
That's usually the case... but this time there seems to be some valid arguments. Plus GHS does have a bit of "juice" at the CIF office.
It should be interesting. Fred should set up a twitter badge on the blog that gives us updates minute-by-minute!
Fred
Art Wilson say's- even money, stay's as is.
