Softball game thread: Los Altos, Glendora pull off huge upsets; South El Monte, San Dimas win; BAmat, WCovina lose heartbreakers

| | Comments (43) |

I never thought we would be a game away from a Glendora-Los Altos championship. But guess what, the Tribune's top two teams are knocking on the door. We have all the softball final scores listed below

Final Results
Division II
Los Altos 2, Ayala 0 -- Goodbye Bulldogs, Patterson outduels UCLA-bound Hall, gives up just two hits as Conqs go to the semifinals.
Glendora 3, Oaks Christian 0 -- Yes, the Tartans knocked off the No. 2 seed on the road as Waldusky throws another shutout.
Tesoro 1, Chino 0, 10 innings
Chino Hills 3, Crescenta Valley 2
Tuesday's semifinals
Tesoro vs. Los Altos
Chino Hills vs. Glendora

Division IV
El Segundo 1, Bishop Amat 0, 9 inn -- The Lancers had the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth and couldn't tie it. When you read the story, you will understand how heartbreaking this was.
Hesperia 4, North Torrance 1
La Quinta 3, Torrance 1
Paloma Valley 5, Santa Monica 0

Division V
Whittier Christian 6, Northview 0
San Dimas 6, Barstow 1
Village Christian 4, San Jacinto 0
Heritage 5, West Covina 4, 9 inn
Tuesday's semifinals
San Dimas vs. Village Christian
Heritage vs. Whittier Christian

Division VI
La Salle, 6, Arroyo 2
South El Monte 9, Ramona Convent 0
Marymount 5, Grace Brethren 0
Maranatha 3, Oxford Academy 1
Tuesday's semifinals
La Salle vs. South El Monte
Marymount vs. Maranatha

Today's pregame softball predictions: First off, good luck to everyone, you all have represented yourselves and the Valley well, but I'm not sure how many teams we're going to have left in Tuesday's semifinals. Let's start in the Division III. I'm sure it sounds great to have an All-Sierra Final Four, but the reality is there is a better possibility of all four getting swept. Chino won't beat Tesoro, Glendora won't beat Oaks Christian, and Chino Hills won't beat Crescenta Valley. Los Altos has a very, very good shot against Ayala, but the Bulldogs will likely be the only Sierra team to advance. I don't see Bishop Amat beating powerful El Segundo in Div. IV, but I love San Dimas and West Covina's chances of moving on in Div. V. In Div. VI, mark it down, Arroyo will knock off La Salle and meet South El Monte in the semfinals on Tuesday.

CH's Innamorato is a heck of a freshman pitcher. Still I have to point out that Glendora's Brandi Andrews hit 3 home runs (including a grand slam) in two games against her. Just lucky? Maybe. On the other hand, beating Bonita (and Alemany AND CV) is pretty darn impressive. It's the playoffs; anything can happen . . .

Very true Fred you bitched and moaned all year about Glendora not being ranked what about Chino Hills talk about the under dog nowhere to be found in the rankings all year.

Fred
what is your take on chino hills what a story. They get in as an at large berth and wow beat some really good teams a long the way to the semis and possibly the big dance. All this with a freshmen pitcher they don't score a lot of runs but just enough to pull it out.I am very impressed with the level at which this team has taken it from what I have heard there are 7 starting seniors on this squad who are playing with leader ship and everything to loose.

Well, if you check my comment to LA Fan, I DID say you guys had a lot of games to cover, expressing SOME degree of sympathy. And there are other sports, though I'm not sure why. ;-) And LA Fan was also not happy. So you are saying the Daily News got the home run credit wrong? I hope SOMEBODY prints a correction for Katrina (not my daughter, by the way).

FredJ said:

I hope that isn't a Tartans fan complaining about coverage, I believe I covered your game on Tuesday. With so many other area games, we borrowed a Daily News story to make sure the game was in the paper, and if you look at our local page in today's section, we did everything we could to squeeze six softball game stories, and a baseball and track advance all on one page.

Tartan Fan said:

LA Fan: Ok, I see, they were not covering you that day. I suppose they only have so many reporters for so many games. Luckily, they have informal "stringers" like us to help them!

Yeah, we have to get past Chino Hills first. We've beaten them twice, but that's a mixed blessing. Our girls could get overconfident. CH could be out for revenge. Or, since it's the playoffs, neither of those could be factors. We shall see . . .

LA fan said:

Tartan fan, I meant that we did not have SGV coverage at the Oak Park game, Ventura newspaper was there, but its always nicer when the local paper is at the games.
Thanks regarding the Ayala game, DL did a great job of pitching she only gave up 4 hits to a team like Ayala that's big! She had the defense to back her up, and we have cut down on the errors, this team is playing as a team and that say's alot for LA.
Wouldnt it be something to have Glendora/Los Altos in the Championship Game.
Good Luck next week.

Tartan Fan said:

LA Fan: I'm not sure I understand your comment. Did you mean no one thought LA could beat Oak Park?
Heck, I did. And by the way, congrats on beating Ayala. After two games against Jessica Hall I had concluded that NO ONE could beat her. I didn't understand how they had lost ANY games with her pitching. But you guys found a way. Mad props.

In re-reading Fred's Div III Sierra League predictions, it's amazing but he almost got it EXACTLY wrong. It almost turned out that Ayala was the only Sierra team NOT to advance! (It took Tesoro 10 innings to avoid Fred's complete failure).

LA fan said:

tartan fan, that's the way it was for LA on Tuesday, it happens but I know what you mean!

Good job LA, you played hard for 7 innings and it showed at the end..Ayala dad I'm sure LA is grateful for your kind remarks and thanks for a great game..Just like your coach said you guys hit the ball very hard but right at the opposing players and LA defense stepped up and made the plays..that was definitely good to see and timely hitting was by far the important part of the game..see, I don't see a lot of teams hitting JH or DL consecutively to score runs and it happened yesterday and that was good to see from LA.. I think LA will have another tough game against Tesoro who won on a walk off home-run in the 10th inning to beat Chino..You have to beat these good teams to get to the championship game and LA is doing it so far..

An important correction to the story on the Glendora-Oaks game: It was KATRINA BRANDT who hit the solo homer in the fifth, not Brandi Andrews. Yes, Brandi led the team and the Sierra league this year in homers, but she "only" hit a ground-rule double in the fourth, and scored on Audrie's single mentioned in the article. Katrina's homer, by the way, bounced off the roof of the snack bar. She got all of it, and then some.

Amusement on Kelly Nolan's RBI in the fifth. After Natalie Hernandez was aboard on an error, two outs later Kelly was hit by a pitch. Astonishingly, the umpire refused to let her take first. He claimed she "moved forward" into the pitch, and thus did not make a credible effort to avoid being hit. We had not seen a "non-avoidance" call like that all season! He called her back, and she drove the next pitch into the right field corner for a triple, scoring Natalie.

I don't think anyone, including me, picked Glendora to win this one. Oaks had outscored their opponents something like 6-1 over the season. But Dana was on her game, scattering 4 hits in 7 innings with 7 strikeouts. And the Tartans had girls on base every inning but one. They weren't intimidated; they went after it and played a great game. Remarkable game. I think it deserved a lot more column space than it got.

Well Fred, you underestimated the Lady Lancers in the 1st round when they traveled up to Morro Bay to take care of business. I'm picking our girls again because Ariel Whiteman (ay-yo) has been nails in the circle and the the girls bats have been the best I've seen all season.
HERE'S TO ALL THE OF OUR LADY LANCERS, PLAY HARD AND LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FIELD, WERE BEHIND YOU 100%, AS ALWAYS!!!

Hey Fred thanks for being so Confident in LA..You know how close it was the last game..and please dont say your picking Ayala becasue they beat Glendora two games in a row..two different teams remember that. I hope LA pulls this one out, should be a good game...Ayala dad maybe this is what you've been waiting for, well you got it buddy..and good luck to both teams.

SGaletti said:

Freddy, sounds like a fun day.

Glendora gets to play on the turf at Oaks Christian and La Salle goes to Arroyo, just to name a few.

By the way, I'm picking La Salle in that game.
