Another beautiful day in the neighborhood

| | Comments (27) |

The blog took off on Tuesday, we had more hits than Scott Wolff's USC blog, and were within a few hundred of Brian Dohn's newspaper-group leading UCLA blog, and those are pretty-much national blogs with a huge Southern California presence. We do it right and we do it proud in the San Gabriel Valley, so thanks to all of you for making me look good. I was tweeting as many games as I could, getting updates from Northview-St. Paul, Bishop Amat-La Habra, Bonita-Alhambra, San Dimas-La Canada softball, as well as the game I was at, Glendora-Knight softball. It was compelling, Bonita, Bishop Amat and Northview all trailing early, then hearing about Bonita's grand slam, Amat's huge rally in the seventh, then finally learning that defending champion Northview is no more, losing to St. Paul. It was an incredible day, and with so many teams left, seven in baseball and yes, eight in softball, we have got a lot more tweeting to do. You want surprises, how about three Miramonte league baseball teams in the quarterfinals, thanks to Los Altos' magical playoff run. You want matchups? How about South Hills and Bonita on Friday. You want momentum, how about Damien's 20-3 win over Dos Pueblos. You want predictions, I'm standing by mine that San Dimas will keep going and win the Division IV title. You want tough, how about Los Altos and Glendora softball moving to the quarters along with, um, West Covina, Bishop Amat and Arroyo. I'm telling you, we're just getting started.

Coaches comments ...
"Hey, sometimes you have to battle and sometimes you have to tip your cap and that's what we had to do with La Habra. They played a great game and we had to make a great push at the end to win. We'll play any team anywhere, whatever the challenge. Look at our schedule, we're not afraid to play anyone." -- Bishop Amat coach Andy Nieto.

"There is no shame in losing to St. Paul. The shame is for a group that has accomplished so much (over the past four seasons) and has been more successful than any class in Northview history, this is the last day they played. This is not indicative of what kind of team this. And that's the shame - that we played so poorly." -- Northview coach Darren Murphy.

"We have had big hits from everybody in the lineup all year. Our offense and defense has carried us." -- Damien coach Al Leyva

"We were very concerned. We were getting the feeling that it was getting away. We were doing everything right and just not getting it. I was concerned about getting a bit panicked. I think we showed our composure. Jason (Plowman) gets that grand slam. He's a gamer." -- Bonita coach John Knott

Don't be too proud of getting more hits than Scott Wolf. He is a hack who rarely discusses anything other than Oregon cheerleaders and English League soccer. Brian Dohn is a very good journalist. Jill Painter, another very good journalist, often assists Dohn on his blog.

I do commend you, Fred, for this blog. It is a good source of info.

In the May 18 Div III Poll, Beckman is ranked #1 followed by Bonita, with Downey at #8. Lancaster was also ranked in the top ten. Charter Oak split with Bonita 2-2 during the season. No Charter Oak or Los Altos found in the top ten of the May 18 Coaches' Poll. The old saying applies: "That is why they play the games."

Jonah Northrup (Charter Oak H.S.) and Richard Kilbury (Monrovia H.S.) have committed to play for UC San Diego.

Who is Scott Williams? Who did Charter Oak throw Tuesday... Do they have anybody left?

If you're curious about Charter Oaks pitching, look no further than their pitching coach. Scott Williams.

I see Baseball is all about number crunching, and that about covers it. Tough to argue with the facts.

couldn't get a 2.0???? said:

How sad it is that Northview lost 2 guys during CIF because they couldn't maintain a 2.0 GPA. Basically, if you just show up and do what you are told (too much to ask apparently) you will get at least a C in most classes. You might have to put in a little time if you want an A or a B. As a senior, you are already in 6th period baseball PE (guaranteed A+) and can be a Teacher's Aide for another period (another guaranteed A+). This means that in order to average a 2.0 you can get 2 F's and 2 C's to go along with your 2 A+ grades. THAT IS NOT TOO MUCH TO ASK! If I was a Northview player I would be very angry with my teamates because they LET DOWN their team!

AE,

Big news indeed about the 1, 2, 3 from the Miramonte all still in the hunt, but don't forget SHHS still reps the ole San Antone.

The Conqs began play as a the third place team and sweat out a 3-2 win over the Sunbelt #3 Elsinore followed by a 4-2 over Orange, the Golden West champs and then yesterday's win over Santa Monica 3-1. Corona Del Mar may be a different proposition with a half dozen kids who can rake and at least two who had 6 HR's in the regular season.

C O walked over Cajon and Palmdale although now has the prospect of facing the two best teams in the D back to back in Beckman and Downey, (Lancaster is no prize to play either, but the other guys have a little more pitching). This is not the same team that we watched back in the Glendora torment. Where did Tom Quinley get this pitching?

Bonita may be playing like the same team who won the Glendora; a different Gelalich in CF and a tweak here or there but they seem to be back to hitting the ball like they did early on. More importantly, they still have Calderero and Plowman on the mound giving the Bearcats a pitching advantage over the other three teams in their bracket.

Go Miramonte.

Bishop Amat and San Dimas on a collision course. Hoping this comes to life. St. Paul knocking off Northview yesterday "how sweet was that" seeing how Amat has owned St. Paul this year Amat would have spanked Northview this year, so all that suppose intimidation of Northview players showing up to a Amat game was pointless. Enjoy the rest of the school year and the summer and see you at our games because the division 5 last year Champs are still in this tournament as a division 4 team. Win or lose Amat has proved once again that it can play where they put us. Losing To the slime Northview? come on you are better then that. The Slime? Geeze what a choke n' joke.

who else is there?

It is pretty big news that three Miramonte teams are in the quarter finals. Bonita is getting good press (because they are champions this year?)Charter Oak or Los Altos could make it to the finals. Could reporters or bloggers stay closer to the action with them as well?

I hope all those two sport athletes who play baseball and football won't fall too far behind come fall. The football boys have been working hard all spring while these guys are swinging bats around.

Thanks Joe, I was looking at COVERITLIVE, that's a great idea for the fall, especially because we have correspondents at just about every game, we can have live updates throughout the night. I'm still trying to figure out how you embed twitter to our blog page.

joe said:

Fred... Great job on the blog you cover everybody...Anymore info on the Charter Oak game? Who pitched? Offensive sluggers? How do you think they match up in the next round?

Joe Amat Author Profile Page said:

So a day of "tweeting" takes you to the next level. Who-da-thunk !:?)

Great job with the updates but the real congratulations goes to the many schools that were still involved. What kept it interesting is so many SGV teams were playing. Great season to those that are done and good luck to those that are still playing.

All those people came to the blog - went to your Twitter page to keep up, and if they're like me left it up and refreshed it... so your *Twitter Page* got a bunch of hits too. What if ALL those hits went to the blog? You mighta passed Wolffy and Dohn!

Now here's another freebie for you. Imbed your Twitter updates *in the blog* so they show in the thread and people stay *on the blog* to read instead of Twitter. Even MORE hits! Check out * http://www.COVERITLIVE.com

I've seen a demo for in game updates and it's awesome! If you get trick you can post live photos and polls to ask during a game. You can set it up in advance so up to a dozen Twitter users can post from their phones. 1 thread for a dozen games... or set up multiple windows for single games. I person on a computer in the office can update once in a while then everyone elses posts get published too. I'm telling you - during football season... imagine a dozen games covered with in game updates and showing on the blog in addition to your scoreboard (which is an awesome feature-thanks for that!)

Freddy, we're finding out this is the future of the print media and you are on the front end of riding that wave. Good job!
