Saturday's CIF-Southern Section prelims results
Division I, Division II, Division III, Division IV
Who you should look for?
Saturday could be a banner day for locals at the CIF-Southern Section divisional track and field finals. Several area competitors put themselves in solid positions toward possible individual titles following strong efforts at their respective CIF-SS prelims. To continue, click thread
None were better than Bishop Amat High School's Sheldon Price, who turned quite a few heads Saturday after recording the quickest time of the day in the 100-meter run - 10.60 seconds - to beat defending state champion Randall Carroll of Cathedral in the Division III prelims at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa. He also outdueled Damien's Taylor Herrera, who ran a solid 10.66 for the No. 2 spot in the Division II prelims.
Several other area competitor also had solid efforts. Here's a brief breakdown of how locals fared in each division:
Division I
Diamond Bar's Joel Baez led a group of four area athletes to qualify for Saturday's finals at Cerritos College. He took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 5 inches.
West Covina's Taylor Bernhard was fourth in the pole vault with a leap of 10-6. Others to qualify included West Covina's Ricky Johnson, ninth in the 110 hurdles (14.98), and Diamond Bar's Samuel Rockwood, fifth in the high jump (6-7).
Division II
Herrera led the efforts, with his second in the 100 and third in the 200 (21.70). The senior, who will attend Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, qualified for the state finals last year.
Glendora's Chris Ramsey, a former sprinter turned middle-distance runner, also is in position to score a title, taking the No. 2 spot in the 800 with a time of 1:59.97.
Division III
This is the Valley's most-productive division, with 10 area athletes qualifying among the top three in their respective events.
The qualifiers are led by Bishop Amat's Sheldon and Kylie Price. The brother-and-sister tandem blew away the competition at the prelims. Sheldon Price was first in the 100 and third in the 200 (21.60). Kylie Price countered that with a first in the 100 (12.07), third in the 200 (25.21) and a fourth in the long jump (17-11).
The other big performance was turned in by the Diamond Ranch duo of Karynn Dunn and Graham Victors.
Victors turned some heads with a first place in the shot put (57-11). Dunn, one of the top area athletes the past two years, was first in the 100 hurdles (14.41) and triple jump (38-1) and a solid second in the long jump (19-3).
Also taking a top qualifying spot was Charter Oak's Eric Rogers, who was first in the triple jump (46-6).
Other solid performances were turned in by San Dimas' Erika Kalmar, third in the 400 (58.84); St. Lucy's Sarah Barnum, third in the triple jump (35-11); Diamond Ranch's Koree Hines, third in the 110 hurdles (14.94); La Puente's Edward Bonita, third in the triple jump (45-3); and Diamond Ranch's Jared Jones, who tied for first in the high jump (6-2).

Coach Haggs should have taught this kid how to show respect.

Guess what, you don't have to be Catholic to go to Amat, just in search of a good education. Now hears a little surprise for you....Catholics go to public school too! CALL THE VATICAN!
two other Ganesha athletes that also qualified for Cif Finals and ARE in the "top three in their respective events" if that's how you want to put it. It makes me wonder why they do not get noticed when they, too, are having big performances just like the other athletes listed above. But then again we are just Ganesha, right?
90 % + 50 % is 140 get it straight
Congrats to the Price sibs; they sound like great kids which probably means they have great parents too.
If you're going to list the other top performers, don't overlook the San Dimas High School girls' 4x400m relay team which qualified third: Shannon McKee, Katherine Salcido, Breyonna Arnwine, and Erika Kalmar.
That was a nice article on the Price siblings Fred,
Good luck to them & the rest of the SGV reps.
Most of Berra's Yogyism are true...they just take a deeper thought process to understand. Your 90% mental part will destroy the most gifted athlete...look at Michael Vick...and I;m not talking off field stuff either.
On the other hand look at Joe Montana...as smart as they come.
Look at Bill Russel...as complete an athlete as there ever was....100 % mental toughness...100 % physical purist.
Too bad Yogi Berra's saying out shine his accomplishments on teh field...they were staggering!!!!!
He also said that "Track is 90% mental and the other half is physical."
Recommended a restaurant the other day but told me, "it's so busy no one goes there anymore!"
Good story.
Gotta love Coach Steve Foss who is apparently trying for the Yogi Berra Award, High School Track and Field Division.
Speaking of Amat sprinter Kylie Price, Foss said “She was young when she got here, which is an advantage, but can be a disadvantage age-wise.”
FRED!!!
HOW ABOUT THAT CARPOOL STORY OUT OF BISHOP AMAT???
THOSE KIDS ARE GRADUATING AND HAVE BEEN FRIENDS AND RIDING BUDDIES FOR FOUR YEARS.
WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT STORY.
JOEY...I THINK I'M GOING FOR IT...
INAPPROPRIATELY BOISTEROUS AMAT FAN...STRIKES AGAIN!!!!
Actually, Sheldon is one of 5 seniors who all attended the same junior high, played football together as kids and chose to all attend high school together - so they could go to a fine school with great athletics and continue to compete at the highest level and stay with their friends.
Sounds great to me too!
From a fine catholic family in LP, no doubt...
