Breaking News: Brigham Harwell back at Los Altos
Big News: Former Los Altos and UCLA standout Brigham Harwell, the 2003 Tribune player of the year, will coach the Conquerors' freshman team this fall, head coach and former teammate Felipe Aguilar announced last night. Harwell recently signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins, but it didn't pan out. All they're missing now is Shaun Cody. Harwell could have joined up with former coach Greg Gano at Damien, but he showed his loyalty to his alma mater. "Brigham had a great career at UCLA," Aguilar said. "Just to have him come back is a great opportunity for all the kids and the community. At UCLA he was their team MVP, so we're very fortuante. He's going to be a great influence on our program. On Friday nights he will help us (varsity) out. He will probably be up in the booth contributing for us, which is a huge benefit."

Aguilar on the spring: We had a lot of great workouts, there is a lot of energy out here. Things are a little different than last year, a lot more intensity, a lot harder work, and I feel like I have my feet planted a lot better this time around."
Aguilar on future after two missed playoffs: We're driven and I'm driven to get us back on the map. We're expecting great things in the near future. We expect to be one of the top teams in the Valley again. Last year I came in a lot later, and was kind of thrown into it, everything was going a 100 miles an hour. Now with a whole season and time to implement our offense and other things we want to do defensively is a huge advantage."
Did you know: That Harwell was only the second player in the history of the Tribune's player of the year award to win it as a pure defensive player. West Covina High's Bob Epps was the other, winning in 1976. Cody might have been another, but as we all now by now, that went to Aguilar in 2000 instead.
Who to look for in 2009? While we're on the subject of defense ends, linebackers and tackles, who will be the best returning this fall? This is always an area where we need help identifying the best.

I spend many hours reading blogs and commenting and this blog was really helpful. Thanks.
This is probably one of the best mentions of this topic I've seen in quite a while. It's obvious that your knowledge of the subject is deep and this made for a very interesting read.
They have ten readers and they beat you to a story? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !!!
breaking news,
Well you found us out. Yes we do bankroll the Trib. How else would a school with such a poor sports program no sports history at all get so much space in the paper. Surely we do not get it on the merits of our programs . We thought we would wait until football season to put the new banner on the paper. It will then be know as " THE LANCE" Let us know who you root for and we will send one of our ace cub reporters and give you a little ink every now and then.
Spoken like a true amat honk Joe. It's been the Amat tribune for the last few years. After all whose going to cater to Amat nation and all those Raider parties.
Breaking News?,
The Trib is only called that in internal communications and is not for public consumption !:?)
Did you intercept an inside memo?
Bottom line.. I'd bet they cover what people are interested in and gets read - but that's just me.
Amat 73
Any truth to the rumor that soon the Trib is going to be called the Amat Valley Tribune? Or is the Trib just the Bishop Amat school newspapaer in disguise?
Who knows, with Amat dominating the coverage to the extent is does, maybe Amat is bankrolling the operations at the Trib to keep Fred employed!!!
Frank C,
Yes 80 kids all levels. Last year at this time the program had around 140 kids. I do agree that LA was in most of the games last year, and they were over matched, the 1-9 record reflects the talent more than the coaching. This year the program has taken two big hits, coaching is a major question mark; basically all the key coaches are gone. The talent on this year’s team is weaker than last year’s 1-9 team. They had no line last year and they lost the majority of that line.
I see LA going 2-8, the only league game they are going to have a chance of winning is Wilson. Northview and maybe San Dimas are the non-league games.
Now the freshmen team is going to have major issues with the principal closing down open enrollment at LA. That being said LA is only going to be able to pull kids from LA's area, I see a very small freshmen team compared to the past.
I don't understand why LA didn't move down with Wilson during the league realignment, talent wise they are going to be at that level for at least the next four years. They just aren't going to be able to compete in league.
Harwell's at Los Altos. Other breaking news: Anthony White got the Temple City job. Manny Ramirez got a 50 game suspension. Hey did you hear Ray Hernandez is at South El Monte. 12? They got at least 15. Oh and Fred tell your buddy Miguel he has no integrity. If you don't believe me ask Randy Backus!
Shut up dickface!
Chris are they still practicing?
Do you mean 80 kids total for all the levels?
As far as 90 kids for Freshmen Ball what going on today is 1/2 are there to make friends and get used to high school life...and another 1/4 are there because of peer and parental pressure...so that means nothing to me at all.
All long as the play only 11 players at a time I'm fine with 30 hard nosed players.
I'd like to see a Brigham practice some time and see how his brother Brent os doing.
Hey I'm pulling for LA to fight it's way back but you're right being a great player doesn't translate into being a good coach any more than saying LeBron is the best player on the planet means anything to Kobe...you still have to prove it in competition.
LA is going to have to fills big shoes with Fair and Co leaving and with this poor economy that's making it tougher to spend football hours for $1.23 an hour...if that!
Try and stay positive and try and pull together...LA had it's run....hope you were cheering during the good times.
Tell me when a practice is Chris and I'll go see it and tell you what I honestly think. Maybe I'll get Harwell to sign his Hight light tape! lol
who is Canales?
LA & Aguilar's 2008 season,
Having attended numerous LA games last year (5 or 6) , I was able to observe Aguilar's 1st season in person.
Yes, they went 1-9.....so what?
Considering they weren't loaded with top talent, they played hard and appeared well coached. More importantly, I never seem them give-up or 'mail it in'.
Yes, they were over-matched a few times and were in dire need of a QB for most of the season, but overall Aguilar was dignified on the sideline and I think he performed well.
I think a 5-5 is a realistic goal for 2009.
GO CONQS !!!!!!
Frank C,
I have been to a few LA spring practices and seen what they have. I was shocked to see the lack of talent, speed, size and numbers. They had about 80 kids at spring ball, they had 90 on their freshmen team this year, where did they all go?
As far as Harwell goes, I personally have my doubt about head coach of the freshmen team. Line coach on the varisty team, would be a much better fit.
I've been accused of spreading my fair share of stupidity but most of the stupidity is laid out right here for everyone to read.
I won't defend Harwell because doing so would only insult his outstanding reputaion as a person and a player. I believe it's a Freshmen job right? Considering some of the hacks I've seen at Damien I can't imagine what people are talking about here. I had one year of Pop Warner experience and those coaches..almost to a man...were completely over their heads so how is Harwell not qualified. Combine all his Division 1 credentials, his mentorship with a great defensive mind in Walker and his experience in numerous Pac 10 games and...why are we having this conversation? Stupidity is clearly not in short supply here.
As far as Aguilar goes. He might be as dignified an individual as Harwell is but I'll leave that to peope who actually know him. What I do know is he was a great player and POY over an even greater player on Cody...so there's that. He worked hard to have a college career and after college came back, in similar fashion to Harwell, to give back to their school.
Gano,I've always respected form afar, now that I see him at Damien I know even my biggest credits will say Gano and Co. are head and shoulders better than the previous staffs. The key word here is "better".
Maybe Aguilar falls flat on his face and gets the axe after two years but how is hiring Harwell a move in the wrong direction?
Los Altos fans/haters/ and sideline observers should look at the USC sidelines. James Washington and Kenny Norton both asked UCLA for jobs and were told no thanks...how many great USC LB's has Ken Norton developed? How many DBs could JW have helped develop?
If LA wants to show Harwell and Aguilar the door I will pick up their salaries and drive them over to Damien where we haven't had a QB Coach or a D Line could to write home about.
Some people just love to hate...at least base your hate on valid concerns. I'll wait for the Damien Dads to start bragging about the new coach and "get after it attitude" the team displays before I say....ummmm...nothing at all. :-) I've always said it was about the "KIDS" and not just my kid.
LA will be fine....they are too proud to just not work their way back..good luck to all.
Having Harwell on the lower levels certainly can't hurt, but those two being proven winners? lol Come on now Frank. As the poster below said maybe during their playing days but certainly not last year. Plus other than teaching the lower kids techniques which is important, isn't all Harwell going to do is implement Aguilar system which last year went 1-9? Maybe they should make him head coach instead.
Frank C:
"Not sure what LA has in the tank but both Aguilar and Harwell are proven winners and great guys so with any luck they will succeed."
Proven winners as players, as we all saw with Aguilar's 1-9 season sometimes great players do make great coaches.
Fred,
I hope these guys are not speaking of _ v _ being your competition. They have got to be joking. One thing I must mention you did underestimate their readers . It is 12 not 10 . It had a chance of 15 but 3 people got excited with the post button. Fred knows who his competition is on the local scene if there is any and you guys are defintely not it. As for the mid, does it mean mid Death Valley.
Actually it would only be funny if I were a reporter. But I am not. I guess the powers that be deleted my comment about how Miguel basically has a habit calling bloggers out that make comments he doesn't like. This is not the first he has asked for them to call him.
Fred and Miguel...Watergate had their "Deep Throat"...what name will this new "spy" use?
my guess is "Deep Ass"...ouch!
I got jokes!!!!
LMAO
I heard that Damien landed some talented freshman
this week. I am not sure who yet.
Your funny Frank, and probably right, I'm only confrontational in front of the television when the Lakers take bad shots.
FIGHT AFTER SCHOOL!!!!!
Fred this is crazy!!!
Are you guys saying another reporter from another blog/newspaper in intentionally and actively practicing guerrilla warfare of sorts?
Now this is really crazy!
You wordsmiths are a rowdy bunch! Maybe that's why every two bit dictators arrest all the wordsmiths first!
FIGHT AFTER SCHOOL...Fred send Miguel...you're a little squirt but maybe you can jab and move until the windbag gets tired....or you can take him out "Soccer" style a pura patadas...and literally kick the crap out of him.
Okay, now that you have angered Miguel, back to the subject of Harwell and Los Altos, please.
Sorry mid-valley anonymous reporter, we have no competition in the SGV. It's like Bishop Amat against Rio Hondo Prep. Why should I have respect for a person who singles out Miguel or The Guru like this. If I went on your blog, I would put my name down, you're no better than some of the other anonymous commenters who come in here and take cheap shots. Then you use words like "integrity." Give me a break.
luckynutz:
If you're going to make accusations about "stealing" photos I suggest you pick up the phone and give me or Fred a call instead of posting comments behind a screen name. I'm at 626.578.6300, Ext. 4485
Any news on incoming freshman football players at Damien.
Fred what seems to be funny is that you fail to realize who your competition is.
The fact you can't be honest about where you get your pictures (Koffler's comes to mind), oh wait that was your buddy Miguel that stole that picture. Maybe the non-competition should watermark their pictures.
You have no integrity. Want to know why, because you have James Escarcega being your guru/lackey and he of all people never answered to certain innuendos of when he lived in Kentucky.
Need I go on. LANG is one step in the grave, while your competitor thrives with added viewership and listeners.
Ba-dum chee......
Come guys....
Are we getting a bit "catty" ?
Oh I read it once in a great while, but I don't go into their blog/webpage or whatever it is anonymously like you're doing and try to stir things up. But I guess when you've got 10 readers, you gotta do what you have to do :)
So what you're saying then Fred is that you don't read the non-competition?
Then I would I guess the quotes for the Neiko Padilla moving to South Hills post just appeared mysteriously, right?
Surprised Harwell was able to just walk away from any other Pro options but he's a great individual so maybe he's just ready to move on with his life as a teacher and coach. Too many times college athletes have a tough time transitioning but apparently Harwell isn't one of them. Props to Brigham.
Not sure what LA has in the tank but both Aguilar and Harwell are proven winners and great guys so with any luck they will succeed.
Best of luck to Los Altos Football.
Los Altos STILL needs PLAYERS . Regardless of who is coaching ...
Best of luck !
FIGHT ON
TM
Fred may have gotten the photo from
http://www.nationalchamps.net/2008/sub/pics/small/ucla_brigham_harwell.jpg
You think Escamilla went and took the photo and Fred got it from his Flickr account?
You know what's funny about that, I had no idea where that picture came from, Escamilla sent it to me.
I am one of the ten. huntsecker you must be another one because I have seen your posts over there.
Oh yeah, Fred must be one too! Other wise were would he have gotten the picture he used for his blog when Escamilla resigned?
Damn Fred! Ten readers? LOL! Will you "be here all week?"
LB's? Yeah.
Smith and Pat Dallen at C O will take away some of the sting of graduating the “bookends” next year.
Add in AJ Powell at SS, and the Charger D should have a pretty tough core.
hahahahaha
That's good for their ten readers
Breaking news?
I guess it would be for you since you feel you have no competition when it comes to local sports, but your non-competition had that posted last friday!
