Following Mier, Leyland, Lyons and Slover also get drafted ... Now, to sign or not to sign?

| | Comments (18) |

Bonita High School's Jiovanni Mier, who was drafted in the first-round and 21st overall by the Houston Astros, wasn't the only area player drafted in Major League Baseball's Amateur Draft. Former South Hills pitcher Brian Slover (CS Northridge) was taken in the eighth round (250th overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays. Former Charter Oak shortstop Scott Lyons (Arkansas) was taken in the 15th round (452nd overall) to the Kansas City Royals, and fresh off of winning the CIF-SS Division IV title, San Dimas' Josh Leyland was selected in the 16th round (483rd) by the Oakland A's.

To sign or not to sign: This question was asked by several people yesterday. If you were Jiovanni Mier, would you go to USC or sign, and probably get a signing bonus in the range of $1.5 to $2 million? With that much on the table I would sign, no question about it. My feeling is you can always put $150,000 grand away for college if baseball doesn't work out. Your dream is to play pro baseball, and someone is giving you life-changing money to pursue it? Take it, be smart with the money, and chase your dream. The bigger question is what will Josh Leyland do? He signed a letter of intent with Washington State. He has a scholarship on the table. My answer to that is it is completely up to him. Is it more risky to sign? Yes, because the financial value of the scholarship is more than will be offered by the A's. This is probably the hardest decision for families to make, but you know what, it's not a bad situation to be in is it?

What's imteresting about Jio going 21st, is that the Astros beleive this kid will develop in the future. It's their projection, not so much what he did this year..

Did he have a big year at Bonita? Some in the know say No! They believe he had a better better junior year.

Does it matter now? No, and god bless him for getting picked high!

Reality - He will now have to produce at the next level to make it. It all starts now, because each step is way tougher than playing at in HS.

Good Luck..

kenny boy,

I can no longer keep a war of words going with you since I can't understand the language that you write in. (I have no idea how you passed the 3rd grade). Also since Fred didn't post my last blog which I don't understand why since I didn't use any profanity or Jr. High comments like you do.

But it doesn't matter just keep these few SIMPLE words close to your heart...Fat, Drunk & Stupid is no way to go through life. And DON'T be an embarrassment to your kids.

ken you toe tipped in the majors, great for you and your family
you come on here as ignorant as any person who has ever ben on here
and what did your mlb career do for you but
make you a bitter man with a big mouth
ignorant is too kind a word based on your post
everyone is not the enemy
as usual your enemies are inside your
own head
calling a person a jerk off
based on what kevin wrote and
once again insinuating violence
why do you insist on being so surfer dude rowdy dumb?
most players who get to the show end up having a little more class
about it than you
get a grip on your anger issues
which go way back to your
high schools days
by your own admission

I remember when Lance Parrish out of walnut was drafted, he signed but in his contract was a clause that if he got hurt in a certain amount of time, the tigers would pay for a full ride to U.C.L.A.wich is what he was offered. Someone gave him good advice.
fred,
I don't think you should allow kh to keep talking on here like he does. He is getting as bad as some of the guys you banned on here.I'm not sure why but some of these guys are amussed at what he says. I dont care how much experience he has or what background he comes from,he doesn't need to talk to people the way he does for no apparent reason but to draw attention and cause trouble.

In the case of Jio, you sign if that kind of money is on the table. If you go to college and get hurt... it over! He could also attend college in the off season if he wants a degree. I would use the leverage of USC to get the bucks..

In Josh case, very tough call, especially if the offer doesn't cover a college education. But you can negotiate college in the contract.

Good Luck to both. Great kids!

I saw where Jio is making a few waves by telling a Houston newspaper that a Houston Astros scout told him they would be trading Miquel Tejada soon. My guess is he's signing w/ the Astros(although I wish he would stay at USC).

FIGHT ON!

It's former Charter Oak shortstop SCOTT Lyons, not Josh Lyons.
