For 41 SGV All-Star softball players it was time to say goodbye, and thanks for the memories

WALNUT - The San Gabriel Valley Senior All-Star softball game was a fitting end to the high school careers of 41 girls who have been standouts at their respective schools.
The South, coached by Kendra Navarro (El Monte), came from behind to post an 11-3 win over the North, coached by Pamela Crampton (St. Lucy's).
"This bunch of girls on the South team are fantastic girls," Navarro said. "They hustled in practice and they all got along really well." To continue reading, click thread

The South, missing seven all-stars from Glendora and San Dimas who will be playing in CIF championship games Saturday, was a little outmanned but still jumped on top in the third inning, with players from the San Antonio League providing the action.

Annette Diaz (South Hills) led off with a single. Codi Arends (Walnut) reached base on an error, and both players came home on a double by Samantha Morales (Rowland) for a 2-0 lead.

"It was pretty exciting," said Morales, who will be going to the Air Force Academy next year.

"Playing in this game was pretty intimidating at first, but my teammates are all really cool girls."

The North came right back in the top of the fourth with three runs to take the lead.

Heather Harrison (Northview) walked. Ariel Martinez (Covina) singled for her second hit of the game. Jessica Arcangel (St. Lucy's) moved the runners up.

Amber Bachman (Bonita) went all the way to third on a throwing error that brought in both runners. Jennifer Olivares (St. Lucy's) singled to bring in what turned out to be the final run for the North.

"It was a fun game for the girls," Crampton said.

"They showed up and they had a good time. We had a couple of errors, but they held their heads up. They showed up to play and they made a bond; it was awesome."

Besides her two hits, Martinez started for the North and gave up one unearned run in her three innings in the circle.

"This was a lot of fun," Martinez said.

"I knew a lot of the girls. I wish we had won, but it was still a lot of fun."

Bishop Amat ace Ariel Whiteman started for the South team. She had seven strikeouts in her three innings and also got some playing time at third and first bases.

"I played pitcher and the corners," Whiteman said. "It's my last high school game and I had to finish it strong. I've been waiting for this for four years, and its been a lot of fun being out here."

Arends led the South with a single and double and three RBIs. She started a 6-2-3 double play that shut down a North rally in the seventh.

Aundria Solis (Northview), Kelsey Hardwick (Temple City) and Brittany Vasquez (Temple City) all singled to load the bases before Arends' great play to get out of the inning.

"The double play felt good," Arends said. "I got to meet all these girls and we had a lot of fun together."

The game was a celebration for the Seniors who have committed their time and talent to the game. Thanks to the organizers, coaches and parents for the oportunity. I think the players understood and enjoyed the game win or lose.

Outsider:
Your comments might make you look like a malcontent. You took a swipe at me, umpires, coaches, the game organizers, specific players, Fred, CSF, but you missed having to pay for parking. Other than that "overall it was an entertaining game". With such high standards I'm sure you'll work (volunteer) to make the next one better, but don't be surprised if nobody notices.

The strike zone might have been a bit inconsistent (mostly tight until the called 3rd strike outside). Like an umpire has never heard anybody complain about their strikezone before! I respect all of them who give it their best. It was a zone that pitchers had to hit their spots and batters had to swing the bats.

Outsider and !!!!!

I don't know what Los Altos 2b did to you guys, but bashing her tell me a whole lot about you guys. Obviously you have no life and have nothing better to do.

Bottom Line: Full Athletic Scholarship to Cal State Fullerton. She will leave that place with a degree and lifetime of memories and guess what, it's all free. What have you morons done in your athletic career. Freaking Jerkoffs!!!!!

Outsider- couldn't tell you why she was at shortstop I didn't go to the game you can probably ask the coach..you said she plays second, again I don't know why they put her there then..and if she has a weak arm your right she doesn't belong there..seems you no more then i do about these players..but if she's going to csf I would guess the coach see's something you or I don't see..who knows..

Last high school for all involved. More should be done to improve on it.
Disappointed that 41 girls played and only 16 pictures were taken by the Tribune.
Game should have been played after CIF finals were completed so all deserving could have played.
Head coach from every school should be allowed as staff.
9 inning game is cool.

good game

what game were you watching? what tight strike zone? almost every k ba's pitcher had was on pitches that were on the outside of the plate. thge blue was very inconsistent. with inside and outside pitches. but who decides the coaches for the teams? i dont think they had a clue. i even noticed la's catcher didnt get an at bat.great job! 9 inning game, common sense give each girl at least 3 innings to play! i sure hope when my daughters in that game its better coached!

fred your sierra vista pitcher got hammered. you were told from day 1 shes not all that!

where was so. el montes pitcher?

!!!!!!!
i assume you know all of la's players right? ive read blogs here and there with your name on it. what is the big deal with the 2nd baseman? havent really heard her name to much this year, i know shes going to csf.big deal.im sure yould agree right? she has no arm what so ever! i couldnt believe the coach even put her at ss.good thing no one hit it to her where she had to throw it to 1st. they wouldve made it by a mile. ive even caught a few games with her playing travel i think with athletics{i think}, so i know it wasnt a bad game.her stick wasnt to impressive either.

overall it was an entertaining game.wouldve like to seen sd and gl. in it as well.

A few nerves here and there but good job working together for a fun game that had great hits and great catches. Pitchers and hitters had to work with a tight strike zone.

NORTH teams Glendora and San Dimas are in the finals.

Yes she was, unfortunately she saw only the last 2 innings of the game. She faced 7 batters, 1 hit 5 strikeouts and a flyball to left. Her 1 at bat was a flyball to left and left fielder made a great catch!
As you can see from the photo above the LA girls had a great time.

Was Los Altos' Diana-lynn Patterson in this game?
