"Jimmy (Arellanes) is my dog. He understands what we have over here. It's more of the prep writer over there who hypes them all the time, but (Arellanes) knows what type of talent we have here." -- Rosemead's Matt Koffler

Robledo's response: That is what Rosemead coach Matt Koffler told Star-News reporter Miguel Melendez after I promptly predicted a 35-14 East victory tomorrow night in the Hall of Fame game. So Koffler, err Coughler called me out, well Koffy should know I make these predictions when you have guys from the East who compete for CIF championships in bigger divisions and win, and because the East had won six straight until last year and is 17-10-2 overall. Besides, is it any secret the football on the East side of town is not only stronger at the top, but has more more parity than its west counterparts? To say the east should be favored is a no-brainer.
Northview coach Jim Arellanes on Rosemead's Matt Koffler relishing the role of underdog: "I'm sure he is saying that, that's his deal. He did that when we were at Rosemead (as teammates) and I'm sure he's going to continue to do that. But I don't buy it, they have some significant talent on that side. We talked the other day, we didn't have as sharp a practice as we have been. We're like 'Hey guys, we're not just going through the motions, we want to have fun, but at the same time we want to win.' Our guys understand that, they want to represent our side of the Valley. I don't buy into that underdog role at all, they have some players."
Robledo's prediction: East wins, 35-14
Melendez's prediction: West wins, 21-17

Aram is absolutely right on with his assessment of East vs. West. There are WAY more schools, and bigger ones at that, out east. AND the Pacific league was battling it out in Divisions II and III up until 2006. Had Muir or Arcadia been in the lower divisions in the 90's like the east schools, they would have EASLIY won multiple championships.
The overall play is better in the east, but the way it's set up, it should be.
You may want to ask Jimmy Boy why he didnt return Gilmore call.
The backfield could be alot better. Jimmy just miss managed the calls.
My gosh, Dan. '05!? Time flies. It's Walter's senior season at Oregon. How is that possible?
Hey facts: before you start to correct me on what words mean. maybe you should broaden your mind and understand that words do have more then one meaning.
For instrance in the late 1800's early 1900's when someone called a person a hack it meant they talk bad about people.
Or during the last century a hack is slang and means that a person does not do a good job.
so like I said fred/facts is a hack.
Aram, good to read you on here, that hit that your talking about with Walter Thurmond was in the summer of 05 hall of fame game, I remember it too.
Speaking of West Covina, they had 100 kids turn out this week for the incoming freshman class, the highest ever since Coach Maggiore has been there, the interest in the program seems to be growing each year.
LIVING LEGEND?
Just to let you know , the name HACK, is a term that is used in prison. That's what they call correctional officers.
Is that what you mean? Becareful what you say!
Fred is a hack
Arammmmmmm, coach Brownfield is still in the hospital, recovering I hope. I just asked about him today, and those close to him are very hopeful...
As for me picking San Dimas over Rosemead, call me crazy, but I still think San Dimas would beat them if they played again. It was one of the unfortunate starts, I think they turned the ball over four times in the first ten minutes and fell behind three touchdowns in a blink. It totally changed everything.
OK, I'll take this one. I grew up in the West, covered it for a while, then covered the East. The West has schools that can easily stack up with the East. They just have less of them. That probably stands to reason because the area is smaller. You have more bigger schools (WestCo, Glendora, Diamond Bar and so on) in terms of attendance in the East. You have more small schools (Maranatha, Pas Poly, La Salle and so on) in the West.
When I started, I covered mostly Star-News teams. Did Pasadena, Arcadia, St. Francis, Monrovia, San Marino, Alhambra, Temple City games. When I got to the Trib, all I heard was "It's a whole different ballgame out here."
Uh, yes and no. The season sure lasted longer. As in usually 13-14 weeks. But that's probably just because the West schools were horrifically placed in their CIF divisions for so long.
As far as the Hall of Fame Game. Always loved this event. Coach K is doing it right. He'll have his boys jacked up. There were years I though the East would roll, but the West always hung tough and was certainly not embarrassed.
I will never forget Walter Thurmond's (WestCo then, Oregon All-American now) on Sean Smith (Blair then, NFL now) to start the game in ... I think it was 2006. And that's only great memory for me, I've got like 20 others. You'll surely get more on Friday.
Speaking of which, can't mention the Hall of Fame without mentioning Coach Brownfield. Any update on how he is, Freddie? Will he be there Friday?
Just Saying, did you mean WERE, as in a reference to someone or something or did you mean WHERE as in a location.
Perhaps you were rejected from Amat as well.
As for the Robledo/Koffler saga, I must agree with Robledo on this one. The East is by far loaded with superior talent, tougher competition, and traditioned programs.
However, Robledo does have a reputation for supporting anything east of the West Covina mall. I was at the Rosemead, San Dimas semi-final game and listened to Robledo deprecate the Panther team as he smirked with infamous tone "do you really think Rosemead has a chance," picking SD to win in blowout fashion.
Not dogging the man, however as a journalist, one must remain unbiased and free of prejudice. Looks like his Edgewood ties will never leave him.
"No Brainer" Where you referring to Koffler again?
Heard he may have had the all-time record for lowest entrance exam score at Bishop Amat. THAT'S why he ended up at Rosemead.
