Yankee Doodle Dandy, the United States shocks No. 1 Spain 2-0 in Confederations Cup Semifinals

| | Comments (5) |

The United States' win over the world's top-ranked Spaniards ended their 35-game unbeaten streak since winning the European Championships in 2008. Spain's world-record unbeaten streak had equaled Brazil's 35-game win streak set between 1993-95. Even bigger, the United States snapped Spain's 15-game winning streak, another world record, launching the U.S. into Sunday's championship against Brazil. Spain hadn't been beaten since a loss to Romania in November 2006. Is this the biggest win in U.S. history? Not quite, nothing will ever touch the United States' shocking 1950 victory over England in the World Cup. But there are others to compare it with, like the United States' win over world No. 4 Colombia 2-1 in the 1994 World Cup and the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup win over Brazil. There is also the 3-2 win over Portugal in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea, or the 2-0 win over Mexico in the same 2002 World Cup that launched the U.S. into the World Cup semifinals for the first time ever? Folks, today's win is No. 2. Never has the United States been to a FIFA final and beat the No. 1 team in the World in a non-friendly, and they did it after the most improbable of circumstances to reach the semifinals, needing a 3-0 win over Egypt coupled with Brazil's 3-0 win over Italy. Do you believe in Miracles? Yes.

Soccer is not behind hockey in popularity. Hockey still gets more play in the press for traditional reasons, but soccer ratings on television are better, attendance is better, and lets face it, soccer is the most popular youth sport in the country, period.

Pedro, you must be upset that the USA beat a European Powerhouse at their own National Sport.

While Soccer is gaining momentum here in the USA, it ranks last to Football, Basketball and Hockey in terms of popularity. And even as you claim that Spain has the best Basketball team in Europe it pales in comparison to American Basketball regardless if that tall dude from Barcelona helped the Lakers win a title. Soccer is Spain's dominant sport and Basketball is one of USA's dominat sport.

This win isn't equivalent to Spain beating USA in basketball. The US have the best basketballleague in the world, but Spain has the best European Basketball league, which means the second best in the world. In addition to this there are many spanish players playing in NBA. Even one of the keys for the last Lakers title was a tall guy from Barcelona.

Taken into account that MLS is very far away from other leagues such as NFL, NHL or NBA we could say that this is equivalent to Spain beating the US in Hockey, Football or Baseball.
