I think Gabrielino is hosting their own varsity scrimmage on the same day. You know I would always want a quality program like Gabrielino to compete against, but it doesn't always work out. They are cohosting our varsity tourney in the fall (Sept. 17th, 18th, and 19th) and we will be in their tourney in October.
I'll keep everyone posted on the summer leagues we attend if Fred can give us a volleyball thread every once and a while for the junkies.
What about Passing League games?
C Dawg....that was awesome!!!!
That's what I've always thought this blog should be about...I'll take in a few games now.
Any chance this couuld be a weekly thing Fred?
For those that are interested, my daughter plays for LA's softball team and this summer they are working out at Optimal Sports. They go 4 days a week and are paying a GREAT team price, the girls are working hard and from the short time that they have been going I am hearing that the girls are already feeling the results. In my opinion the biggest thing gained from these workouts is the team chemistry that is going on. The workouts are not at all easy and the girls push eachother everyday! Hopefully this is something that Coach McCullough is going to make regular once school begins. KEEP WORKING HARD LADIES!
GHigh,
You couldn't get Cuong Chau's Gabrielino team in?

Don,
I agree with you about Podley. I always thought he was a pretty good coach, but I didn't truly realize it until I saw one of his practices. They are a really organized and exciting. Always on the run and all of the coaches are working hard.
Turn the Table,
I would probably have to say there are a few up and coming coaches around such as Zavala from Wilson, Maddox from Monrovia, and Aguilar from Los Altos. However, I only named head coaches. I know for a fact that there are a lot of good young assistant coaches out there.
I don't know if we can call Dom Faraar up and coming since he's been around for a while, but he's great as well as Lehigh. San Dimas has some assistants that know the game well. And what else can you say about the Amat guys. And after witnessing that Bonita practice, they have a few young guys who are energetic and who know the game that seem to be good coaches. Now that I think about it, the SGV has some solid coaching across the board.
VBall,
Most of the teams at the Ganesha tourney aren't from the SGV. They are
1. Ganesha
2. Pomona
3. Ontario
4. Eastside
5. Colony
6. Covina
7. Los Angeles Lutheran
8. Pomona Catholic
9. Chatsworth
10. Southlands Christian
11. Burroughs
12. La Puente
We were hoping to have 16 teams, but hopefully we will expand next year.
I just read that the Trib's Athlete of the Year Manny Acosta just accepted a four year scholarship to Cal State LA. Great job Manny!
GHigh
Who will bw at the tournament on the 11th.
Curious, but other than your mvp and grant vickers, how did you select the others on your track team and what were their specialties. Are they all sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, or distance runners? How do they rate you attention? You designate baseball players and other all league or all SGV stars, why not Track?
How about some ink on the most recruited player in the SGV, Cj Guerrero. He is the biggest name right now in the area and never any blog time or ink. He has done a few articles this summer with slam and several other basketball magazines. He has been ranked the top 5 prospect in the class of 11'. With UCLA knocking at the door.
Not to compare Big Lou or Gano to La Valle Edwards from BYU fame or Chris Petersen from Bise State but ....BYU was always seen as operating in a lesser conference yet put out some pretty good players and a few NFL Championship QBs...and when given the chance won a National Title....Boise Stae on the other hand beat a stacked Oklahoma team...well actually they embarassed them with their skill, execution and desire...soooo is it a stretch to say Big Lou and Gano or other small time...your inference...are actually great coaches???? ...especially given their longevity and area dominance?
Saying Big Lou or Gano are less than because they don't play in Div 1 is misleading and catergorically unfair. In the next few years both Big Lou and Gano will have their shots at D1 and D2 schools but even if they don't aren't their accomlishments significant on their own right?
My question to the blog is who are the next great coaches in this area? I guess anyone can say so and so sucks but it does take a little bit more thought to identify un and comers.
Thanks Don.
Fred any thoughts? Especially to asking bloggers specific questioned based on your sense of what they might bring to the blog?
You would think with all those accomplishments Big Lou would try to move up to play with the big boys. Or maybe he just wants to keep dominating D-7.
Don,
Big Lou would be the best candidate for "Which coach has grown the most from their humble beginning?". He is a Charter Oak/Royal Oak home grown coach. Most of the coaches on his incredible staff played football at Charter Oak for Lou.
As for the football aspects, hes a 4 time CIF championship head coach. Hes dominated the Miremonte League for close to a decade now. He has 2 undefeated season. And he has had many great athletes play for him.
Those are just some of his major accomplishments, im sure with some research you'll find ALOT more.
Gladstone and Northview's Volleyball Summer Leagues started last week and more to start next week. Gladstone looks improved and Azusa seems improved as well. I'll try and help update the blog somewhat for those interested in volleyball. Ganesha will also be hosting a 12 team tournament on July 11th.
Fred did you ever announce a wrestling first/second team this year never read it in the paper?
For Turn The Tables:
I'm not sure that I am qualified to weigh in on your chosen subject, “Don...Which coach has grown the most from their humble beginning?” Maybe someone who has grown up in the area will take a crack at it.
I will share my admiration for guys like Gladstone's Rich Remkus in Baseball and Eric Podley over at Bonita in Football who seem to field competitive teams every year despite the same issues that seem to afflict most of the schools in our area.
As much as I enjoy watching the teams like Amat, South Hills, or Charter Oak, the “old school” type coaches who get it done with less are the ones who move me. The fact that they can keep it up every year with (mostly) home grown talent is reason enough to recognize their talents.
Fred ever consider asking bloggers specific questions. I read how some bloggers take you to task and other bloggers who really have quite a bit of great insght and I've always wondered how they would handle a very specific question.
Fred I think after all these posts...don't you have questions of your own about the bloggers?
Joe Amat...rank the young up and coming coaches?
Don...Which coach has grown the most from their humble beginning?
Fred any thoughts?
You really have a story started right above here.
The selection process of the Junior Olympic Teams itself would make fascinating reading for anyone interested in Prep Sports. When you take into account the custom sabermetrical algorithms, the interaction between the JO selectors the college recruiters and the pro scouts, the individual reports on the hundreds of thousands of kids playing High School Baseball each year, the Cray computer on loan from the National Security Agency the story is quite something.
Really, the overall selection process is quite something.
The history of the process is even more amazing.
Just an idea.
Fred,
When are you going to post the All Del Rey League baseball team?
Fred the best time to see high school talent is in the summer. Basketball tournaments are happening all over and no one ever downloads the schedules. Passing leagues are fun to watch and it would be fun to see a schedule of games. Finally I heard quite a bit about SGV baseball players playing on travel ball teams...why not down load schedules...it would be fun to see our sgv allstars from different schools play together. Might go far in terms of cutting back the weirdo comments.
One last thing Fred is there any chance there could be a final tally of all the sgv athletes who signed, walked on or got partial for teh next level....no matter what sport. That might give peopel a real sense of how rare it is and how much we should all just appreciate the high school athletes for what they are....our kids...and not so ESPN anonymous dart board.
